Tohru: Natsuno is missing, we have to find him!
Megumi: You think I have him microchipped or something?
Tohru: Don’t you?
Megumi:
Megumi: Yeah, hang on...

Death is terrible for anyone. Young or old, good or evil, it's all the same. Death is impartial. There is no especially terrible death. That's why it's so terrifying.

literally no one was doing it like natsuno yuuki. he was genre savvy but he was also fucking gay so he still died. after his death he started dressing like the google search results for gay vampire. his only friends were his homoerotic bestie, an adult medical professional speed running his descent into madness, and two random kids he dug up his stalker’s grave with. he became a vampire and was immediately better at it than all of the other vampires but he thought they were bitches so he didn’t even tell them he turned. his last words was that he was never going to make it out of that town alive but if anyone could have it was him and that’s what makes him so tragic. he died trying to save someone who was never ever going to save him back. he wasn’t afraid to die because he was already dead. he burned the entire town to the ground mourning his own death and he didn’t do it to save a single goddamn person, he did it because they murdered him and he was going to fucking hurt them back for it. I’m obsessed with him
#natsuno yuuki#shiki anime#god this was such a good horror show#Ozaki was a force of his own but the actual thing that led to the downfall of the Shiki was Yuuki#Yuuki was the one who kept ozaki’s will his own which led to the ultimate reveal of the Shiki to the town#he was the first one to realize that it was vampires out of everyone#he was the one at the heart of every major turning point in the fight against the Shiki#and the sheer grief he has for himself is fascinating#he’s the one who fights the hardest to live initially#he wanted to get out of the town and go back to the city#he’s genre savvy and resilient and he kept trying and trying to find a way out for himself and the people he cared about#that ended up being his downfall#he tried to find a way out for someone already turned and that’s what ended up killing him in the end#but what’s fascinating is that he accepts his own death and that completely shifts his approach#he’s not trying to save his friend anymore#he doesn’t even tell him he was turned#he’s not trying to find a way out anymore either#he accepts himself as dead#he doesn’t want to escape#he doesn’t want to save the town#he wants to revenge himself#his own parents didn’t even fight to save him but he mourns his own death so violently he makes a pyre out of the town for it#Tatsumi asks him why he sided with the humans and he says he didn’t. he just didn’t like the shiki all that much.#he didn’t do it to save the town. he /didnt/ save the town. the town burned to the ground. he did it to revenge himself#he’s not afraid of dying because he’s already dead but he’s jinrou. he’s one of the few vampires who COULD pretend to be normal#he chooses to die fully instead of play at being alive#I’m just so obsessed with him

Vampire lovers (or any other immortal beings) who don’t want to turn their partners are sweet and noble and all that, but give me more vampires who are so determined to not lose their human lovers that they’ll force them into immortality.
And then their lover is devastated at the loss of their humanity but bound eternally to the one who took it from them? Beautiful.

Every once in a while I think about Shiki. I was lowkey obsessed with it as a teen.
First of all there were so many CUNTY characters. Megumi, Sunako, Chizuru. I was obsessed with their style (especially Megumi's, though Sunako is who I like the most as a character). And some of the male ones ate too like Tatsumi and Seishirou. Even Muroi in a way.
The artstyle is fucking insane with all the bizarre hairstyles, the shikis' eyes, most of the characters have very distinctive features.
And the Natsuno x Tohru ship. Upon rewatch it is not subtle AT ALL. They kinda just straight up show us Natsuno falling in love with him at the beginning of one of the episodes. Plus he gets jealous when Tohru talks about the nurse, and then Megumi asks him "Why do you like him more than me?"!!!
Unfortunately I just hate how it fucking ends. You can't give me a show about vampires and expect me to not root for the vampires, sorry. I think it would've been cool if at least most of the humans died in the fire or something. I don't know, the shikis just being exterminated and that's it (ik it's implied Sunako survived, but still) just felt a bit anti-climatic and didn't leave a good taste in my mouth. I also hate how they made Megumi's death more brutal and humiliating than in the manga and novel for some reason.
I also fucking hate Toshio in general lol.

something so fascinatingly absolute in the way Natsuno both feels and expresses love and hate. We have the moral dilemma of Seshin and Sunako. And Natsuno‘s ties with both Toshio and Tatsumi. Tatsumi‘s reason for turning him that he fights back. And yet when he comes back as a Werewolf, Tatsumi‘s attempts to sympathise with him, force him to comply go into nothing because Natsuno’s driving force is; unlike Toshio, not about survival but a simple hatred that persists. But then, he harbours these emotions so quietly that until Natsuno eventually dooms both of them to rot in a hole, he fails to realise that about him. It‘s like Natsuno is exempt from the instinctive will to live that makes the shiki vs humans dilemma so real.
I find Natsuno‘s hatred in itself interesting as well. We spend a lot of time with him as a human. He wants to leave to go to the big city much like Megumi. He wants to avoid making friends, getting attached as much as possible. Everything he seems to be doing is to get out. He harbours resentment against his parents and especially his dad for the way they isolated him, is for the lack of a better word bothered and later terrified of Megumi, is annoyed with Masao. But with all these people it seems like there is no trace of genuine hate. Even towards the shiki. He deteriorates due to not drinking blood, Tatsumi threatens him, he plots with Toshio. And yet even Tatsumi is suprised to know he did it out of hate.
His love for Tohru is compelling because it challenges both Natsuno as a person, but then way he views the town, his straightforward hatred for the shiki. And completely negate the impression of Natsuno being overly rational. He opens the window to Tohru, thinking he shouldn‘t let him in, he tried hard to not let anyone get close to him ect. His actions almost helpless. His inability to see Tohru as someone he hates is the direct cause of his death. I‘m also quite sure that Tohru didn‘t hypnotise him before his death and that Natsuno‘s hope for Tohru making up his mind about running away together and his wish for Yukito and Kaori to escape kept him at bay until he died. And I‘m also sure that the reason for not going to meet Tohru after his death was that he feared it‘d stir up even more bothersome sympathy that‘s leak into the his overall impression of the shiki as it had with the town before Tohru died.
I think Natsuno is of sorts somewhat of the antithesis to Seshin. Which I think is also somewhat prevalent in the story of the two brothers Seshin writes to deal with his both his own suicide, general disdain with his life and also the shiki. The story is kind of something that still confuses me a little. Because whereas Natsuno reducing himself to his hatred for the shiki does somewhat coincide with the mere act of the one brother killing the other (granted the brother that kills also looks almost exactly like natsuno), but it is described in a way that matches up with something like the murder in The Stranger aka „I did it because of the sun“ or just Absurdity.
