On this day in 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Poland. Hitler was already conducting an invasion from the west and Stalin joined him by invading Poland from the east.

This double invasion was part of the agreement drawn up by the foreign ministers of Nazi Germany and the USSR less than a month before.

As a result of the double invasion, the two worst people in the 20th century got to divide Eastern Europe between themselves.

Of course dictators do not necessarily stick to agreements with each other. On 22 June 1941 Hitler invaded the Soviet Union and the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact became null and void.

History reverberates – more so in Eastern Europe than in most places.

Russia indiscriminately bombing the shit out of disproportionately Jewish civilian populations in Ukraine might be another clue that Putin’s invasion never had anything to do with wanting to “denazify” Ukraine. Russia is the unprovoked aggressor here. Russia invaded Ukraine, Ukraine did not invade Russia. Russia is targeting civilians, apartment buildings, schools, churches and hospitals … with lethal bombs and weapons. The Russian army is raping Ukrainian women as a tool for war, and abducting thousands of young children and putting them into “re-education camps” where they teach them how to be good little Russians—a war crime and literally one of the definitions of genocide.

And because I know how braindead tankies can get on this website, NO, Ukraine wasn’t in NATO when Russia started its war on Ukraine, and NO, Ukraine wasn’t even applying for membership to NATO when they were invaded by Russia.

Ukrainians and their neighbors would be crazy not to want to join NATO now.
