Book review: 'SHATTER ME' SERIES

From “I think I like this” to “why didn’t we just stop at book three?”

Here’s how it went down for me, book by book:

📘 Shatter Me (Book #1): 4/5 stars Let’s be real: the premise hooked me, and the writing was unique enough to keep me flipping pages. But Juliette and Adam? Yeah, no thanks. Their connection felt more like trauma bonding than actual love. Adam’s “nice guy” energy was giving... stale toast.

But Warner? Oh, now that’s a character. Complex, dangerous, unpredictable—and I wanted more of him immediately.

This book was a solid start, but I could feel the best was yet to come.

🖤 Destroy Me (Novella #1.5): 5/5 stars This? THIS is what I signed up for. Warner’s POV was everything. Vulnerable, intense, and just so deeply human. His relationship with Delalieu? Low-key one of my favorite dynamics.

If you weren’t already obsessed with Warner, this novella will ruin you in the best way. I devoured it. Zero regrets.

🔪 Unravel Me (Book #2): 4.5/5 stars This book nearly had me giving it a full 5 stars. It dug into the emotional chaos of war, power, and identity. Juliette started growing, slowly clawing her way out of her shell—and it worked.

People love to drag her for being “too emotional” or “weak,” but I saw her. She’s a product of relentless trauma. Let her be messy. That’s real.

🔥 Ignite Me (Book #3): 5/5 stars Okay. Now I get the hype. This book was fire. Literal flames.

Warner was just perfect! He stepped fully into his golden-boy energy while still carrying all his broken pieces. That “lyhfml” scene? Send help. I melted.

Adam? Someone escort this man out of the building.

This was peak Shatter Me. Honestly, the series could’ve ended right here and gone out with a bang.

💥 Restore Me (Book #4): 3/5 stars Ugh. Here’s where things started to slip. The drama got messier, and not in the fun way. Miscommunication took the wheel and drove the plot straight into a wall.

Juliette started unraveling (not in the title way), and not in a way that made sense after all her growth. I still rooted for her, but I was frustrated. The girl who took control in Ignite Me felt like a stranger here.

Overall, this book felt like a reboot no one asked for.

😶‍🌫️ Defy Me (Book #5): 2.5/5 stars Honestly, what even happened here?

This book felt like filler. Important plot twists came out of nowhere with zero buildup. It was like Mafi was just tossing curveballs for the drama, not the story.

Juliette becoming Ella? Meh. Warner was still Warner, but even he felt like a watered-down version of himself. Adam continued to be irrelevant. Kenji tried to carry, but even he seemed tired.

I finished it out of obligation more than enjoyment. It felt like the soul of the story was gone.

🤷‍♀️ Imagine Me (Book #6): 3.5/5 stars Honestly? Better than Defy Me, but still not great.

The poetic writing was still strong, but the plot? Confusing. Rushed. Unfocused. Juliette lost her fire. Warner turned into a mopey version of himself. I felt like the characters were just wandering around with no clear purpose.

❤️ Believe Me (Novella #7): 5/5 stars NOW THIS is the closure I needed.

Finally, some warmth, some love, some joy. Warner was back in full swoon mode, and Chapter 8? Let’s just say I was not okay. The steam level was illegal.

The romance hit all the right spots. And getting a glimpse into their lives post-chaos felt like breathing again after drowning. It was sweet, sexy, and satisfying. Basically the epilogue the series deserved.

📚Final Thoughts: The Shatter Me series started strong, peaked at book three, and then kind of lost its way. The second half felt like an extended bonus round, with too many plot twists and not enough emotional payoff.

But still—I love these characters. Warner owns my entire heart. Kenji is the friend we all need. Juliette had her ups and downs, but her journey mattered. Even when the story lost focus, I stayed for them.

Would I recommend the whole series? Yes... with a warning. Go in knowing it’s messy. It’s emotional. It’s not perfect. But it is unforgettable.

His dad was sitting in the living room – Charles ignored the instinct screaming at him to move away from Edwin – with his head in his hands. His mum wasn’t visible. It shouldn’t have been strange. Charles had seen both of them alone, at times, though rarely now as age caught up with them. But he and Edwin had been in the business too long to ignore bad feelings. They exchanged a glance, Edwin’s eyebrows beginning to furrow, and then Charles’ dad shifted, and bright morning light caught on his red, red knuckles.

Hey, I saw your post asking for a request and I have come up with an idea! Could I request a Mr Evershed x daughter reader, set during the start of series 3 where Martin is employed, reader is moved into the school (perhaps starting year 10 or 11, or the sixth form really!) and the incident with Sam breaking in and the impact it has on them all. It’s a bit of a long one as I’ve been thinking about this for a while!

Don’t stress if you don’t feel comfortable or are unable to write it!

Bit of background — Perhaps before joining the school, reader suffers with bad anxiety which causes a stammer and frequent dissociation attacks. Martin is aware of this and is hesitant to enrol her in a new school environment (maybe ackley was much bigger than her last school and far more lively) considering her mental health, though he doesn’t have much of a choice as she needs an education.

Reader is very quiet, reserved, and anxious to do well and make her dad proud. She is a high achieving student and very well behaved (maybe she gets a bit of grief from the other students because of this and her reserved nature). She loves and excels at English literature (she may be in her dads lesson), dance and art.

The fic could start the morning of readers first day, putting the uniform on made it feel more real and it made her nervous — clammy hands, heart palpitations, bouncing leg. Mr Evershed tries to reassure her, though he can she that reader is struggling. Initially when joining the students do not know that reader is Mr Evershed’s daughter and they start on her in his lesson, taunting her and trying to bring her out of her shell. Trying to get a reaction out of her, reader increasingly gets more anxious, afraid to entertain them not wanting to escalate the situation and draw attention to herself. Eventually Mr Evershed catches on and sends the boys out who has been harassing her and is unsure of what to do, reader is visibly distraught though frozen in her seat. He removes her from his lesson and takes her somewhere quiet (maybe he sits her in Mandy’s office where he comforts her before returning to lesson. He has a word with the lads after lesson then word soon spreads about her being his daughter (perhaps he lets it slip and gets angry when he was taking to them), and the students start to make comments about her getting special treatment and being a bit of a try hard. This happens in the canteen and reader gets anxious, all of the attention causes her to shut down and she seeks out her dad when she feels the anxiety getting too much and starts to dissociate and he comforts her.

The day continues and maybe reader attends form, in her form she befriends Nazreen and Sam (I don’t know if form is organised by year group or is mixed across years, so you may have to just go with it. I also don’t remember is Naz was back at school by this point) anyway, at some point throughout the week, mr evershed car is set on fire when they are all at home and reader experiences this, it is all she hears about the next day and all hopes of leading a quiet life at the school vanishes as it news of reader being Mr evershed daughter had now reached the entire school and the car incident only added fuel to the fire, reader tries to keep her head down through finds it difficult to do so.

A couple of days later, when the break in incident happens, perhaps reader was wondering from her room to downstairs to get a drink when she runs into Sams brother/cousin?? (I can’t remember) reader is too afraid to do anything, maybe in the stress of being caught he threatens reader maybe causing her to fall and hit her head. Having been caught they make a run for it. When Mr Evershed chases them out, his partner and her children discover reader unconscious downstairs and she gets taken to hospital.

The following day, later into the morning, reader is dropped off at school by her dads partner, having being discharged from the hospital and seeks out her dad to tell him that she was alright (as she arrives at his classroom Sam exits and they bump into each other, reader doesn’t recall seeing her the night before so she just watches Sam run off before seeing her dad) he checks up on her not expecting her to be back at school so soon. He is unsure whether to send her home, she still looks pale and worried she might be concussed, though she reassures him saying that the hospital wouldn’t have discharged her if she wasn’t well enough to leave.

The day continues and reader feels increasingly unwell, perhaps she faints whilst in form (Sam and Naz are with her when it happened and Sam feels responsible) and is taken back to hospital because something wasn’t right — Mr Evershed is alerted and accompanies her there. Mr evershed returns home later that night, reader staying overnight to be observed, he is worried and even more annoyed about the break in and expresses this when Sam confesses to him that same night.

When reader returns to school (a week or so later, the hospital has ruled out any major damage through reader was still fainting on occasion — they hypothesised that it may not have been linked to that night and ruled it just out as a coincidence) and Mr evershed has smoothed things over with Sam in the time that reader was recovering, reader figures out that it was Sam in her house that night and this drives a wedge between their friendship as she feels hurt that Sam continued to be friendly with her despite knowing what happened. Maybe reader is also angry at her dad for knowing and not telling her the truth, and gives him the silent treatment at home and at school. Eventually they make up and things return somewhat to normal, though reader continues to suffer with the odd fainting spell (with further inspection it may have been linked with her dissociative attacks, if that is possible???) and is unsure if she and Sam can be friends again.

Reading this back I am so sorry that it is so long, I’ve had this idea in my head so a while! I don’t know how much of this you will be able to do, if any, but I’d love if you could make any of this happen! Thanks Xx 😁

Seeing ethnic, religious LGBT+ folk in TV like Sex Education, One Day At A Time and Ackley Bridge is always bittersweet. On the one hand you finally watch someone in your exact situation recieve love and acceptance from their family after being terrified of being rejected and shamed. On the other hand you watch with jealousy as they get everything you spend everyday wishing you had but know you never will. Kinda like false hope.

Thank you sweetheart, Pavel and Sparks have the easiest answers of the primary characters. Though so does Nazren actually.

Jon - owns multiple pairs of shoes, chooses based on the rest of his outfit. Almost all his shoes are customized for his ease of movement. A combination of support and comfort, so he can go over nearly any terrain without issue. Most his fancy appearing shoes have built in blades and skimmers to make identifying people faster.

Luc - almost all his shoes are leather and customised to fit him perfectly. His most common pair to wear are his battle boots, they go mid calf, black leather exterior, reinforced heels, sleek lines. His second most common pair are the sneakers Jon got him for Walks, black and silver, foot and ankle supportive.

Isaac - he stopped counting how many types of shoes he has, as he owns everything from adorable open for high heels to combat boots to men's dress shoes. Luc once joked he has two pairs of shoes per outfit choice.

Iov - he has several different pair of dress shoes, in varying colors and styles, to match different outfits and look official. He refuses to wear boots, as he was in boots the day he made the worst choice of his life and changed everything, he’s not a fan of sandals as he’s concerned they don’t look formal enough and will get him in trouble for not taking his role seriously. He does have a pair of black fluff slippers Emere got him for around the apartment, as he is not fond of being barefoot, and kept mopping at the socks and how dirty they could get. 

Pavel - for the longest time he owns only a pair of worn sneakers.

Emere - her favorite pair is sandals and then she has several different pairs of tennis shoes and sneakers, plus one pair of boots

Sparks - for years the only shoes he had were the ones Aither got him while they lived in the warehouse, having never bothered to get others. It wasn't until the second year running the Balakhnov Building and caring for the kids that he bothered updating his shoe collection

Sitara - she has so many pairs of shoes, most a variety of sandals and flats, however she also has several pairs of heels and a few new pairs of boots bought after she moved into the Balakhnov Building to use in the winter months.

Nazreen - her primary pair of shoes are basic black flats, but she has several others that match her various dress and several to match her pattern hijabs.

Hullo hullo happy STS! What can you tell me about Nazreen and her hobbies? what makes her happy?

Hiya sweetheart! 

*grins* Nazreen is the quietest of her triad, but there is a little bit I can talk about regarding her. 

She loves to sew, finds it to be a great time to reflect on things. That it is something she can create new items using her skills and materials created by Allah just makes it better. A lot of her sewing projects end in intricate designs, such as prayers, flowers, or vines. 

She loves cooking, providing food is one of her love languages. One day a week, she makes it a point to learn something new to her that someone she cares about likes, so she may make it for them. 

Gardening isn’t one of her strongest hobbies, but she enjoys it, and often will garden with Sitara or the children of the Balakhnov Building as a bonding experience. 

It takes her a while to get into dancing, but eventually she does. It is not because faith says she can’t (yeah, she got asked that once), but because she’s self conscious of her movements and lack of grace. She eventually learns to dance for the enjoyment of it, without being self conscious.

But why do I have to wait a year for more?

But it was such a nice end really.

I really liked that the theme of the episode was selfishness, and how it can also be good sometimes. Because Mandy can be a bit too selfless and Jordan needed to be selfish this once. 

Everyone passed their GCSE’s or nearly anyway.

The school has money, and Mandy is keeping her job. Hopefully we have seen the last of Javid Shah because he was pretty much School teacher darth vader. 

Everyone has happily integrated.

And even the Wilsons (who continue to break my heart) get a happy ending, their father seems to be doing better, and Jordan’s joining an art course and getting a chance at a better life.

And Missy is in the 6th Form!

Nice that it ended with both Missy and Naz hanging out on the old couch again.

Kind of disappointed that there was no Naveed in this episode.

Can’t wait for next year now! Hope some of the old 6th formers will making an appearance, because I think I may cry if they don’t continue Cory and Naveed’s story.
