Every time I see someone post one of those Gaza Gofundmes I have to question their intelligence. You truly think a middle aged dad who's currently being bombed is going onto a dying website filled with the unemployed and clicking on your gay sports RPF blog, navigating past Vettel/Webber smut and asking you to help them? I know it comes from a good place I really do but I wish people would think things through a little more.

I can't shit on people for trying in their own way to help someone else.

I mean, sure there's moments that make me go 🤨 but I can't fault someone for posting a cry for help hoping that it's a real one and it will reach the (unlikely) right audience. But I do agree with your assessment.

Also, there is a much younger userbase on here nowadays, many of these people were not around for the 2015 (?) and onwards Russian bots pandemic and it shows.

it's so absolutely insane that the FR devs seem to be completely unaware that they are hitting the trust thermocline with the userbase re: recently (again) pushing really big art changes four months after release, after promising a hard 45-day window on significant alterations. like the issue isn't whether the art is good the issue is this is like the third time this has happened in the last few years. maybe fourth. how many times do they think they can do this before it seriously impacts whether new releases will continue to bring users (back) to the site.

made meatloaf tonight and it was good! recipe called for 1.5 lbs of ground beef but they only sold 1lb and 3lb at the store so i got the 3lb cos it'd be cheaper than two 1lbs, and multiplied everything in the recipe by 2. took about 20 extra minutes to cook and it's soooo good

So I've been seeing the seasonal "abandon ship tumblr's going down" panic, and I've also seen some truly dumb takes about the staff running this website. For people not in the know, there's been talk about tumblr basically going into maintenance mode on account of not making any money (I first heard about this here, and there's a good post talking about what comes next here). And I'd just like to take this time to say to @staff, both current and former: thank you.

Thank you for trying. Thank you for putting so much love into this website. Thank you for the crabs and the polls and the Goncharov mugs and @brickwhartley, and a thousand other things you do behind the scenes to keep this hellsite (affectionate) running.

I've been here for a while, and there's been a noticeable difference in how the website is being run since Automattic acquired it in 2019. Is it perfect? Absolutely not! But there is a genuine effort to work with the current userbase. Its a stark contrast to the many incredibly scummy ways other social media websites make their money, from data mining and selling personal information, to turning the site over to algorithms that moderate for outrage and maximum engagement for the sake of advertisers. Tumblr is special to me because it feels like one of the only places left on the internet where I'm not met with a constant demand to buy buy buy. Which unfortunately is also probably why Tumblr has not been doing so well financially. It's a sacrifice to not cross that line, to try and make badges and merch and hope that users will sign up for ad free, all in the hopes of funding this website with cooperation rather than deception.

I don't know how things will shake out, but I hope that Tumblr will be around for a good while. I see the love and the effort put into the merch shop, and the artist collabs, and the april fools events, and the q&as. Things are not perfect, and things can be improved! But there's so much I love about this site, and a lot of it is because we've had staff who genuinely care about this weird little corner of the internet. So thank you, and I hope that this is far from the end of the road for us.

Let me be absolutely clear -- the problems with Tumblr will keep getting worse if the disabled minority and the trans people and the people frothing at the mouth at the opportunity to yell at a transphobe, keep @’ing staff and the developers on this site, tell them to kys, because in the meanwhile the transphobes and racists and white supremacists will keep using the actual tools Tumblr provides for blocking and reporting, further poisoning the datasets used for moderation, and encouraging the idea that using the official tools does nothing to basically ensure the only statistically meaningful data available to Automattic is poisoned, poisoned all the way down, poisoned beyond usability.

Hatespeech and bias needs to be reported for it to be considered statstically significant to act on from a developer point of view. Suicide baiting and spamming any of the official means of communication will get you eliminated as a spammer, even if you’re peppering legitimate criticism within your ventpost about how you hate the new thing. You are playing the TE/RFs game.

That lore.fm things is beyond bullshit and quite insulting as an author because here's the thing: you're not entitled to fanfiction. As an author I don't have to orphan a fic I don't want attached to my account anymore just because you like it. I don't have to leave my fics unlocked so you can feed it to a third party app. I don't even have to publish a fic. I shouldn't have to opt out of a service I didn't even know was being developed in the first place. I know I'm nothing in the great scheme of ao3 authors, but my works are mine. I make them available on ao3 and ao3 only. We're out here fighting corporations who are using ao3 to train AI and straight up stealing our work and now we're even dealing with people thinking it's okay to create a whole separate app to use ao3 as audible? None of the interaction a fic gets on that app is gonna come back to the author. Like, for the love of God, you're not entitled to something people are already making available to you for free. An author gets nothing from posting a fic on ao3 and now we live in constant fear our work is gonna get stolen because somehow people can't seem to understand that our fanfiction is ours and ours only. We're letting you read it. But it is ours. It is our work. Our words. This is bullshit. You're not entitled to something just because it is on the internet.
