There are two kinds of needle-drops, licensed music, that I've noticed in movies and media.
The first and most common type are "Mood Music". Whatever song they chose was done so because of a particular vibe and could be easily swapped out with another song, provided that the replacement matches the vibe. For example, "Hooked On A Feeling" performed by Blue Swede in Guardians of the Galaxy is used as a feel-good song that contrasts against Star-Lord's angst. It could be swapped out with "Magic" by Pilot and, with a slight edit in Str-Lord's dialogue, would work just as well.
The other type is "Theme Music", which probably needs a better name, but I don't have a better name right now. Essentially, the music is integral to the story to the point that only that song in the scene(s) it's used in could work. For instance, "Brandy (You're A Fine)" by Looking Glass in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is vital to the movie. It tells the story of Ego and Mama Quill and how the lyrics are interpreted tells about the characters in-story. Replacing "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" with any other song, such as "Dancing In The Moonlight" as performed by King Harvest or "Cruel To Be Kind" by Nick Lowe.
That being said, as much as I prefer Theme Music over Mood Music, I do respect them both. Not everything needs to be deep. Sometimes we just need to enjoy a good song and someone thought "Take On Me" by a-ha would do the trick. That is nothing to be ashamed of.
BROKE: Pop music playing over footage voicing emotions that should already be obvious based on the action and and dialog.
WOKE: Pop music written diagetically into a scene, supplementing the image in either a resonant or ironic way or else adding an element of rhythm to an action scene.
WOKER: A diagetic pop song serving as a dynamic symbol to a character that is then integrated into the movie's score, effectively serving as a leimotif.
is ‘needle drop’ a new idiomatic expression? I like it on first thought, but acquired tastes have turned out better tor me so often and I think this is a sugary kiddie taste that I will soon spit out.
I do like the anti-capitalist licensing built into ‘needle drop’ but given that vinyl is seen as more legit by most people these days, that’s some mixed messaging I feel, one that does a bit of a u-turn back into licensing and just wanting more quality licensing… 🤢
atp i genuinely doooon’t care if the old guard two is the worst thing put to film i just want to see the best character of all time (andromache the scythian) and her loser henchmen and everyone’s favorite girl nile freeman again
