"Renee probably would," Andrew said, his gaze purposefully locked in on a blank spot on the wall. "She got married last year, so she probably still has some of the decorations laying around either at her home or at Stephanie's. I'm sure her and Allison would love to help plan it."

"Ohhhhhhh no, I'm not letting Renee or Allison get the upper hand on this one. By the way, when do you want to have your... divorcing?"

The smile falls off Neil’s face and he stiffens just slightly. “It was… Uh. It doesn’t matter. He’s dead.”

Andrew gives him a look, “‘he’?”

“Yeah, him. And all my old mes.” Neil says, as if that explains anything. When he notices Andrew’s look, he elaborates. “See, all my old names had their own personalities. Their own looks. Interests, birthdays, you name it. We would change our names and move on, hoping he wouldn’t be able to find us. I’ve been in shitty motels all over the world, under two dozen names and faces.”

“You are a very complicated individual,” Andrew says.

“That’s one way to put it,” Neil laughs, but it sounds sort of sad. He sighs and drums his fingers on the concrete for a moment before his head pops back up. “Say, what are you doing for your birthday?”

Oooh do go on about raven neil and jean 👀 (if you’re so inclined ☺️) - @neil-jostenminyard

So my personal thoughts about this are also mostly thanks to chats and inspiration/prompting from @jtl-fics and @greenautumnleaves so if you see any additions from them on this post it's most likely also thoughts I adore lol

Anyway this got kind of long so:

I ALSO latched onto Sakavic's statement that Neil wouldn't leave Jean in the nest bc yeah it makes sense and also ow

But just the two of them being partnered up like Riko and Kevin as is common in these aus, and then after Kevin gets out first, they have to stick together and rely on each other even MORE because Riko is pissed that Kevin is gone and probably takes it out on the next closest two idk

But in our imaginings, Renee or Andrew get Jean out quicker than in canon, again because Neil would refuse to leave Jean behind and I can only imagine he'd go so far as to trick or manipulate Jean into leaving. Maybe by being at a certain place at a certain time to get picked up, however he can make it happen. But the issue we run into is that once that's done, what the hell would Neil have left at Evermore, besides Exy that maybe he still loves deep down. But Exy's been so warped being raised on it at the nest that at that point his obsession is barely recognizable.

Kevin might recognize this, because he knew Neil in the nest. Or at least he knew the person that Neil presented himself as. But it's probably more likely that Jean recognizes this, and yeah things are super rocky and weird but Jean can barely even function without Neil. So back a fox goes to rescue their second raven's partner.

They bring Neil back to Palmetto and he and Jean are completely inseparable. Emotionally and physically. Neither of them act like, feel like, or even call themselves "touchy feely" or "clingy" people but as soon as Neil is treated for various intense and mysterious injuries, they're curled up in some hidden place for hours. Even the short time having left Neil behind made Jean almost too anxious to leave his room. Even the short time without Jean - now with more punishment for aiding Jean's escape - was enough for Neil to consider something drastic.

(side note: Andrew now has not one, not two, but three gorgeous tragic boys under his supervision and I'm sure he's handling that totally normally lmao. But it's so obvious to him that Jean and Neil have something going on that any ideas for himself aren't worth entertaining.)

So it's a little easier to ease out of various habits and thought processes because Jean and Neil are doing it together, with outside help. They fix their sleep cycles/rhythms, try a slightly more normal college diet, and most slowly lose their "win or die" mindset in practices. They're still never seen without each other - Wymack had a talk with some of the school board about their schedules and dorm arrangements for the first semester. In reality, he's not sure if he should have them go cold turkey on raven habits or if he should take it slower, but he's doing his damn best to get these boys adjusted to life outside a cult. And Neil and Jean, whether or not they actively realize it, find that step to be the one they absolutely cannot take. Why would they go through the agony of learning to live separately if they don't have to. When no one else understands them like the other, when they've already seen each other's worst so nothing else is worth keeping secret between them. Who else is Jean going to go to when having a better life makes him feel like he more deserves death or punishment and the guilt hits him so hard he can't breathe, much less sleep. Who else is Neil going to go to when he can't let go of his birthright - if he isn't good at what he does (Exy) he literally could just be shot like a lame horse - and he's not allowed to go practice Exy against a wall to the point of tearing himself apart anymore so he forces his feet away from the court to find the only person he knows he'll listen to when they say no.

Kevin, of course, is keeping a close eye on the two, whether unintentionally or on purpose is unclear. Neil still has a mouth on him, he sometimes plays mind games with the foxes like chess against himself, and most of all does not allow anyone to get too close to Jean. Jean is still quiet, having learned not only to take a punishment without resistance but also that Neil will speak first. Neil will resist so Jean doesn't have to. He's safer in Neil's shadow.

Maybe it's a phrase or warning that Neil uses and that Kevin recognizes. Maybe it's a gesture between Neil and Jean that Kevin oversees. Maybe it's just the general demeanor of the two. But whatever it is is familiar to Kevin, not in a "I remember this from them in the nest" way. He can recognize by now that Riko was not good to him, he can acknowledge it even if the rest of him hasn't caught up. He looks at Jean in Neil's shadow and remembers himself in Riko's.

As if Butcher's son Nathaniel Wesninski wasn't already scary enough on his own.

But Kevin won't allow this kind of thing on his court, and he's not good at it but he is still trying to let go of unhealthy raven ideals. If Neil is holding onto some fucked up dynamic, Kevin is going to put a stop to it.

He pulls Jean aside, a miraculous feat. He asks what Neil has done.

"Mistake" might be an understatement.

It could very easily be the longest string of words Jean has said to anyone besides Neil. Kevin doesn't know near as much French as he does in canon - Neil is the one that shares that secret defiance - so it's all clear English, Jean making sure Kevin understands every word. Kevin should never speak about Neil that way again. He knows nothing about them, he shouldn't so much as pretend to understand Neil. Neil is the only good thing that ever happened to Jean. Kevin never cared enough to bring it up in the nest, so he has no right to start caring now.

It isn't great for their already tumultuous relationship. Kevin wonders for a bit if Jean would tell Neil about it - then next practice Neil doesn't even try to work with Kevin, even after the two had made it a point as strikers to figure out how to. He ignores the other strikers entirely, falling immediately and seamlessly into perfect synch with Jean behind him, speaking hardly a word of English the whole practice. Because he knows that will make Kevin even more angry than Neil being actively hostile to his new teammates.

Kevin isn't sure what he was expecting. Chances are Jean hadn't even needed to bring it up for Neil to notice something was off.

As for Andrew, I think he could still pick up a game of truths. He'd need to offer a similar deal as he did for canon Neil, this time for Neil-and-Jean, the entity of the two of them together. I think he could ensure some cooperation by saying he won't force Jean and Neil apart from each other the way some others have muttered about doing. Even if Neil knows by now the codependence isn't healthy, neither of them are ready to give it up.

It probably really throws Andrew to hear that they don't consider themselves to be an item. They're together, sure, but for a raven that doesn't always, maybe even rarely, means "in a traditional relationship". Neil and Jean definitely never offer any clarification. That's no one else's business, even if they could explain it so that a non-raven could understand. Generally I feel like if this is an andreil universe, it's an even longer, stranger, more winding road to get there than in canon.

I'm almost CERTAIN there's more Im forgetting about rn but this has been my taster on raven Neil+Jean, I hope it was at least a little bit coherent, and greenautumnleaves - I hope this comes anywhere close to your galaxy brain ideas on these two lol. Maybe I'll be back with other thoughts later who knows

ahhh I love your math nerd AU & andrew first AU soooo much. i think about them in the back of my head wayyy too much. I was thinking about math nerd AU today (again) and picturing andrew just yelling “oh MOTHERFUCKER” for like six months after he’s back-back and remembers some specific moment from before he was back-back that takes on new meaning now that he has all his memories and is neil’s andrew again (although the thought does cross his mind that he was ALWAYS “neil’s” even without his memories, no?). And then I was picturing him needing to blow off some steam before he can fully process whatever he’s now seeing in a new light, but he can’t go to neil to blow off some steam because he’s mad at him. and he can’t go spar with renee because he’s more skilled with his memories back than he was before and doesn’t want to hurt her. So he drags kevin to the exy court and makes kevin fire on him in goal until he’s worn out. kevin is like “wait, for real???” when andrew first drags him to court but gets over that real quick and shifts into “i am a god” mode and is all smug afterward about “i knew i could do it - i knew i could get you to care. god, first i pick the best striker ever and now this??? what can’t i do 😏” and andrew can’t now safely shift his anger to kevin and go back to neil to blow of steam. 😌 - @neil-jostenminyard

Neil was constantly checking to see if Andrew was HIS Andrew. Even all the way back when he signed and let the pen roll off the bench he was hoping Andrew might catch it. Andrew is a combination of both pissed at himself (why didn't he wake up sooner) and pissed at Neil (why were you doing this to yourself Junkie??)

Kevin would be absolutely over the moon to have Andrew blow off steam in such a way. I love Kevin just being so smug about everything XD like yes Kev you had a whole huggy bunch to do with what has occurred here.

Also Andrew definitely goes back to Neil after this and Neil's like "AND YOU DIDN'T INVITE ME???" and Andrew has to make out with him for 2-3 hours on the roof, it'd be illegal not to.

I'm so glad you like it!! Math Nerd is definitely a fun write (even if I hurt myself sometimes thinking about Neil's quiet resignation until Andrew does wake up)

He didn’t think Andrew would bring materials to their session again. That is if Andrew even came at all. He easily could have switched up his days. Frowning, Neil pulled out his phone. He had Matt’s number, but it seemed weird to text and ask if Matt knew about Andrew’s schedule. Neil didn’t even know Andrew well, they’d barely spoken during their last session.

it is surprising to no one, but my fave character to write is andrew :) and i gotta put this puppy under a read more because i wrote way too much. i have [clenches fist] SO MANY THOUGHTS ABOUT ANDREW MINYARD !!!

(doing more than three to get the ball rolling lol)

Andrew's smile vanished when the elevator started its slow crawl down. Neil returned his stare, every muscle tensed for a fight. At the fifth floor, Andrew pushed away from the back railing and started for Neil. He reached for Neil's keys, but Neil moved the ring out of reach. Andrew tried again, and Neil had to step back to dodge his grab. He backed right into the metal doors and realized a moment too late Andrew didn't care about his keys at all. He buried the ring in his pocket, feeling pinned in. How stupid, that someone so short could have such a presence. -- (The Foxhole Court, Chapter 2)

ok, a long one to start, but important ! one of the reasons i love writing andrew is because of the way hes fucking nuts. and as someone who is also nuts, this is pleasing to me. and let me make this point without using silly euphemisms: mania is a state in which a person is heightened, but they are still fundamentally themselves. their thoughts are not limited by silly things like filters or predicting consequences. it is impulse and pleasure-chasing. so! when i look at andrew, who is supposedly on some whacked out fake drug that induces mania, i think about how his actions that could be brushed off as "he's just high" actually reflect an andrew without inhibitions. this is especially helpful when looking at andrew in TKM, when he becomes incredibly difficult to read.

this scene is the reverse, though, and that's why it's important to me. andrew is not on his medicine here, but he's not Mr. Repressed either. this is an in-between, where he's choosing to let some of himself shine through (mostly with the intention of freaking out neil, lol). and it's great, because andrew shows us a few big things:

he reads & understands people SO well, even if he rarely caters to their needs. the fact that he goes for neil's keys on day 1 to draw a reaction is like... yep. you got him lol.

he is willing to take drastic measures in the name of.... well, at this point in the story we're not sure, but soon we'll see that its to protect his people

he's crazy???? lol. i just think andrew's dialogue in tfc/trk in his brief unmedicated moments (and even his manic ones!) are so indicative of how andrew thinks. he's so fucking weird. in this scene, he follows his cornering act with "How nice to meet you, Neil," Andrew drawled. that's so weird!! he's weird. his brain is silly and clever and quick. This bit and others like it are the foundation on which ive built my version of his POV.

now, speaking of andrew's brain --

Andrew stared stone-faced back at him. Neil would have assumed it a silent rejection of Neil's veiled accusations if Andrew's hand hadn't frozen midair between them. -- (The King's Men, Chapter 11)

let's set the scene. immediately before this, neil has suggested they go on spring break, implied that there was a this, then hit andrew with his "And I am nothing" / "And as you've always said, you want nothing."

so like. andrew just got punched in the gut approximately six times in under a minute. poor guy. when neil prompts him back into action, he first threatens to kill neil, and then kisses the shit out of him. squeeee, ROMANCE!!!

when i look at this scene, i think of that first quote i pulled. i think of andrews silly and clever and quick brain, and about how much work he does to keep his mask on. there are plenty of times his mask cracks, but this one is the most fun because he is so clearly being overwhelmed by FEELINGS. he is confused by neil, irritated with him for bringing up all these things that andrew long ago decided didn't matter, and furious with himself for wanting it all too. he has to freeze so that none of that slips out of his mouth or onto his face. when he recovers, he deflects thru being mean (which is useless against neil, but still a satisfying way to blow off some steam) and then kissing him :) because really, that's what it all boils down to: andrew wants neil so bad it makes him want to murder him.

and look at this, a nice transition to the final scene!

Neil ignored that dismissal because Andrew was already pulling him down again. They kissed until Neil felt dizzy, until he wasn't sure he could hold himself up anymore, and then Andrew pulled Neil's hand off the beanbag chair. He held it up and away from them for an eternity, then slowly pressed it flat against his chest and let go. Andrew tensed up under Neil's hand but relaxed before Neil could pull away. --(The Kings Men, Chapter 15) (The second Chapter 15) (Because thats something we have to clarify in these dumbass books)

oh my GOD. has a scene ever scened like this scene scened. has a touch ever meant so much. has a character ever tried this hard. ok, once we've all finished banging our heads against the wall and screaming, let's review:

andrew wants neil so bad it makes him want to murder him. but andrew also wants neil so bad that it makes him want to TRY. im actually going to take this apart bit by bit because if for some reason you're still reading this madness, i think you'll appreciate the detail LOL.

ok, first: before this paragraph, neil confronts andrew again with the gravity of their relationship, and andrew plays his usual game of deflecting and bullying. that doesnt work (andrew, has that EVER worked???***) so of course the next action is kissing.

and kissing and kissing and kissing.

and somewhere in all this kissing that is so good that neil is dizzy, something in andrew says: i want more. he takes neil's hand, maybe on impulse, and has to stop to think about what he's going to do. and then he tries to give: he places neil's hand on his chest, LETS GO, and then relaxes under his touch.

its hard to tell how much of this was impulse and how much was thought through. im willing to bet it was mostly impulse, especially because andrew doesnt hit neil with a "i never do anything i dont want to do" when neil acknowledges that this is probably something theyre not ready for. (instead, andrew reacts by deflecting/bullying -- "One hundred and one" -- and then more kissing. so predictable!).

but still! it says so much. it says that he wants and wants and wants, he dreams about things he thinks he'll never have. and neil keeps trying to prove him wrong, and andrew wants to believe him so badly, wants to SHOW neil that he's starting to believe him. scream!!! andrew invented romance. he put neils hand on his chest and LET GO. he said: "look. im trying. i want this too, even if i cant even think the words." he said: "i want to figure out how to trust you."

because underneath it all, i believe andrew is a deeply hopeful creature, and that is the thing he hates most about himself. he wants a home, he wants a family, he wants to belong -- and it makes him feel so fucking foolish. its easier to wrap these wants up in duties and protections, concrete and emotionless things. but neil never actually wanted andrew's protection, yet he still wants andrew more than anyone ever has before. thats fuckin earth-shattering. theres only so much deflecting and bullying and kissing you can do before some of that deeply buried hope claws its way out.

SO YEAH i really didnt need to do all that but i did. if youre still reading then like LOL youre a trooper hope u enjoyed the 2AM Nerd Rory show. but i think about andrew a lot (obviously) and hes such a difficult character to write, so returning to scenes like these three really help ground me in the version of him that lives in my head. so that i can put him in situations :)

***actually wait i just remembered one time where the bullying/deflecting worked, so here's a bonus. in ch 10, the make it to finals and have a party at abbys. andrew and neil are outside, and neil is frustrated with andrews apathy -- "Would it kill you to let something in?" / "It almost did last time." -- and then also starts talking oh so earnestly about how andrew could be court if he'd just TRY. andrew, obviously, gets mad and asks Neil if hes capable of talking about anything other than Exy. which actually hurts neil's feelings, because neil just really likes talking to andrew about exy (the thing hes most passionate about) & deeply values his opinions, and hes upset by the implication that they dont actually have this in common.

and like, you could read this as andrew just being sick of talking about exy lol. but i see it as part of the pattern. andrew is triggered, first of all. and then neil is being a little too earnest about the future and andrew, talk to me. and andrew's fucking overwhelmed !!! he does not know what to do with this! so: lash out. hit neil where it hurts. deflect and bully.

Last night was hectic. Neil woke up in a cold sweat, smearing it all over the couch he slept. He and his teammates had to spend the night at Wymack’s as they were too exhausted to make it to the dorms after practice. Neil wondered why he had been sweating all over and the realization made him taste bile in the back of his throat. He had been startled from his steep after seeing his mother. He had told himself not to think about her the day before as frequent thoughts made his nightmares more livid and disorienting. After all, 7 years back, today was the day he had burnt the car along with his mother’s corpse. The stench of heated flesh still remained crystal-clear in his memory. Neil jerked out of the couch and headed to the bathroom.

He was too discomposed that he almost forgot to remove his clothes before stepping into the shower. The quick warm water worked its way through his body and did some justice to his preoccupied mind. He jerked is head in sudden dismay as someone banged on his door. 

“Isn’t it too early for a shower, Neil Josten?”, Andrew jeered behind the bathroom door. Neil could picture his wide irritating grin behind the door. Neil ignored him until Andrew started banging again. “Go away Andrew”, Neil mumbled while drying himself. He had forgotten to take a fresh pair of clothes so he had to wear the same stinky outfit he had worn after practice yesterday. He didn’t have time to think again of his mother as Andrew banged again. Neil pushed the door ajar in irritation and looked at Andrew. Andrew quickly jerked his head to the front when Neil opened the door and considered him from head to toe. 

“What now, Minyard?”, Neil huffed in annoyance.

“Nothing. Just wanted to make sure we would not have to witness black ribbons all over the court next day.”, said Andrew looking fresh and tidied although it was 7 in the morning. 

“What do you mean?”

“Stop acting dumb Josten. I heard you screaming,” Andrew cupped his right hand in front of his mouth exaggerating what he was about to say as a secret and said “Lucky no one heard you but me. News flash: Andrew Joseph Minyard saved Neil Josten from a suici-”. He couldn’t complete what he was saying as Neil dragged him into the bathroom. “Screw you. I am not gonna suicide, so stop being so dramatic and shut the fuck up.”

Andrew did not hesitate to fight off his smile as he said “Mmmhmm, Is that so? No worries then.”

“How is me not dying gonna give you no worries? Sounds like you care but save your breath Andrew. You’re not gonna fool me around like you do others.”

All humor drained from Andrew’s eyes but it was quickly replaced by his mock. Neil thought he saw it -the hurt, humorless eyes but witnessed the usual mock within a second. “Oh stupid, you know nothing of fooling. I’d rather speak the truth to you than fooling others.” 

He approached Neil, his gaze completely on Neil’s chilly blue eyes. He was so close that they were breathing the same air. For a moment Neil thought that Andrew was about to kiss him but he quickly pushed that thought out of his mind. Neil closed his eyes, ready to take in whatever was coming next. Andrew tugged his hair to lower his face to Andrew’s and whispered,

 “Not yet, Neil. Not yet.”

Neil stares at it for a moment, dumbstruck by the oddity that is this entire afternoon. He falls into the seat Andrew Minyard just vacated and drops his head onto the table. What the fuck does he do now? Does he tell Stuart about today? Does he pretend it didn’t happen? Does he—

There’s a noise to his right, so Neil raises his head up to see Jean looking at him through a cracked door. “They’ve gone, haven’t they?”

Neil nods. “Yeah. But he knows.”

“What does he know?” Jean asks.

“Everything, I guess.” Neil says, with a shrug. Before the ‘what’ can slip off Jean’s tongue, Neil points to the patch on the floor that Andrew noticed. “Seems we aren’t as good at cleaning as we thought.”
