my first heart i want you to realize it so badly

* I chose to literally translate "心" as "heart" because "心" carries connotations both of feelings, but also the self and one's mind and soul. It's like someone's thoughts and will, their experience accumulated over time. I feel like both of these ideas are important to Hanekawa's character (you could say it's about love, but to what extent is it also about personhood, and being your own individual?) so I didn't want to erase that. I think, or I hope you can see both ideas in this translation.

* The lowercase is a stylistic choice not related to the translation itself. I just felt like matching the bleak tone of the song.

just finished nekomonogatari kuro and like... i gotta say between the theme of pity here and the theme of imposters during karen bee? the monogatari series has some really weird themes about how to effectively show compassion for other people. i can recognize the value in saying 'pitying someone means looking down on them, you should treat others as equals' but the final scene between araragi and hanekawa seemed to argue that hanekawa shouldnt take any actions at all to change the material conditions of her life... and the whole thing with araragi constantly calling the fire sisters' justice fake truly makes no sense to me at all. oh well!

kuro hanekawa has two separate origin stories.

one is that hanekawa picked up a cat from the side of the road, and didn't feel sympathetic for it in the slightest, instead treating it as an equal, deserving of exactly as much consideration as anyone else. in recognition of that it took her side.

the other is that kuro arose solely from within her own mind, that struggling to contain the stress from her family and desire for a hero to come save her, she created that hero herself, someone who could do the things that she couldn't.

but she is the same person as kuro. nekomonogatari black is quite clear on this.

she picked up her helpless, dead self from the side of the road. she, hanekawa tsubasa, became a hero for none other than hanekawa tsubasa, without an iota of self-pity.
