pink rabbits is one of my absolute fav national songs but the “drink” they are referring to in the title is tequila + nestle quik strawberry milk + kahlua and that is just beyond fucked up. why would you make that drink let alone DRINK IT!

Delightful Color of Pink Rabbits - 02/03/2020
This American Life “The Show of Delights” https://www.thisamericanlife.org/692/the-show-of-delights
Delight is something that was missing from life for awhile. Like the last story in the podcast, I thrive as a functional depressive. I can show up and do my job and my duties but inside I felt pretty dead. I think this is why having one of my resolutions to find things I am actually excited about kind of feels like the delight that people feel. While the things that I pursue in the name of excitement might not always give me delight it will surely lead me to more delight then not pursuing it at all.
That’s the crux of a lot of my resolutions. That I will want to actually go for them if I want to be successful at all. It’s really the inaction that really kills me in a lot of areas in my life. I have been semi-successful in most areas of my life that I actually put effort into and it’s these areas in my life that I left stagnant and without delight that I have really suffered.
Back to the podcast itself, I love the story about the zookeeper because of how nonchalant she is about her job and her responsibilities. I think I would be an anxious wreck since it involves animals only because I never grew up around animals and would be woefully inexperienced taking care of them.
It might be that I just might be wired differently than the people in the podcast. In the story about the little boy being excited about riding the bus for the first time, if that were me in his shoes I think I would have found it scary and anxiety provoking more than exciting. Maybe in the face or well microphone of a podcast recording then maybe I will have a little bit more resolve.
P.S. I love Bim Adewunmi’s accent.
SciShow Psych - “Are Colors Real” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGZJflerLZ4
Coming from a culture and mother language where blue and green are the same word it was pretty confusing growing up. This became especially apparent after I learned English and lost most of my Vietnamese skills and tried to talk to my mom about something that was blue or green. I would try to tell her about like a blue shirt or something and always had to clarify that I meant blue like water and not green like a plant. I never really understood why Vietnamese had the same word for both blue and green and that I always had to preface the Vietnamese word for blue and green with a descriptive word anyways.
It’s definitely made me wonder how real the concept of color is and how the perception of color changes how people’s lives are lived. From the people that I know that are color blind is it just the mild inconvenience during board games or is a life changing alteration that would enrich their lives if they could perceive more color.
In my own life I am pretty grateful that I have a decent eye for color and that I was taught a good chunk about color. I know that I don’t have the greatest vocabulary when it comes to colors so I might want to be better or at least more precise about the words I use for color.

“Pink Rabbits” by the National
“You didn't see me I was falling apart
I was a television version of a person with a broken heart”
A note, the official pink rabbit cocktail is “Tequila, Nestle Quik Strawberry Milk, and Kahlua” (https://www.kcrw.com/music/articles/the-nationals-stripped-down-set-for-kcrw-2013-pink-rabbits) which I am not sure sounds completely amazing or completely gross. Here’s a better recipe that gets rid of the Kahlua and replaces it with Gin for more of a floral note and nixes the double dairy in the recipe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdEkPigJI1o
Also this is definitely one of my favorite songs off this album. That line about being a television version of a person with a broken heart echoes through my head randomly sometimes. It’s an idealization of romance and heartbreak that I relate to way too much. Even when it might not be the absolute truth of my life, it’s something that I cling to. Even at my own detriment and even when I know there are better ways to cope.

Yes, I do remember doing that as a kid! Oh! And I called strawberry nestle quik mix "rabbit milk" and not only did my parents and grandparents call it that, so did my great aunt (my paternal grandmother's baby brother's wife, yeah, welcome to my extended family life). (at Plumeyer Photography)
