What is a Passive House?
‘Passive House’ is a design standard that achieves thermal comfort with minimal heating and cooling by using insulation, airtightness, appropriate window and door design, ventilation systems with heat recovery, and elimination of thermal bridges. Originally developed in Germany in the 1990s, Passive House principles are now being used throughout the world. Passive House standards are…

Exploring how big you can make a passive house. To get an Autel MaxiCharger for your EV, go to: https://amzn.to/3NbEFRn. Recently I’ve talked about the new net zero, passive home I’m building, but not all net zero buildings have to be homes or houses. The same net zero, passive house construction principles can be scaled up to large buildings like offices and apartment buildings. In fact, I had a chance to visit the first net zero energy hotel, that's going to be passive house certified, in the United States. There are some really creative concepts at work, and a few that really surprised me.

Google has ended its mass purchase of cheap carbon offsets and thus stopped claiming that its operations are carbon neutral, according to the tech giant’s latest environmental report. The company now aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The Alphabet Inc. unit has claimed that it’s been carbon neutral in its operations since 2007. The status was based on purchasing carbon offsets to match the volume of emissions that were generated from its buildings, data centers and business travel. But in its latest report, the company states: “Starting in 2023, we’re no longer maintaining operational carbon neutrality.”
[...]
The changes to its carbon credits purchase strategy have coincided with Google and Big Tech’s push on artificial intelligence, which a Bloomberg News investigation has shown is extremely resource intensive. As a result, Google’s total planet-warming emissions in 2023 are 48% higher than 2019. In that period, its total energy consumption has doubled. It’s a similar story for Microsoft, which has seen primarily its AI activities cause emissions to rise by 30% relative to 2020, even as it still aims to be carbon negative by 2030.

Transforming India’s Construction Sector To Achieve Net-Zero - Bootes India
Tumblr media
The pace of global warming is increasing at an alarming rate with India emerging as the fourth-largest contributor of carbon emissions worldwide. Greenhouse gases play a significant role in environmental pollution and the construction sector is held accountable for approximately 19% of it. India has set a net zero target for the first time, aiming to reduce its emissions by 2070.
Why is there a need to focus on buildings and the construction sector?
The condition of the environment is deteriorating progressively owing to the presence of hazardous air pollutants, predominantly black carbon. India holds the position of the world’s fourth highest carbon emitter and the rate of global warming is rapidly accelerating. Greenhouse gases are the primary contaminants present in the environment, and the construction sector is believed to contribute to 19% of their emissions. Infrastructure is an essential requirement for the survival of developing countries like India. Without it, the country’s existence is jeopardized. Construction and buildings contribute significantly to the carbon footprint, accounting for around 40% of it. This high percentage can be attributed to several factors such as the use of electricity for lighting, cooling and heating building materials. As per the Paris Agreement outlined in a paper by World Resources Institute, it is projected that buildings will strive for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Currently, buildings that can contribute towards reaching the goal of zero are very few, and Bootes seeks to change that equation as the first Net-Zero company in India. Read more....
