oskari: yeah (laughing) hey i’m happy i caught you after the tests and before the season starts. i was thinking to start this off, because this podcast is of course an important international news source, and you know all kinds of f1 insiders are out there, but i don’t think anyone has an active driver, so is it okay if you’re from now this podcast’s f1 insider? valtteri: works really well for me, i feel like i know something

oskari: you might just barely know enough for us so this works really well and we can get the relevant reports from you. so the tests are done, 2 days is bahrain and first race weekend is just ahead the corner

the test weekend went really well for alfa, no big problems compared to last year, and the feeling in the car is really good

valtteri seems to think that redbull is the best car right now, then after that ferrari or aston martin which is a bit suprising, and mercedes is a bit of a question mark but when they got the car rolling they seemed good, alfa might be the fourth of fifth fastest team right now

he was asked if mercedes can fight for the title again this year and he was a bit skeptical (probably not yet this year)

valtteri almost ran over a goat while doing this for some reason lol?

he feels like his perspective of this sport has changed over the years: he doesn’t regret anything with mercedes/have any bad feelings about it but he’s still working towards a championship and hopes that one of these years he can achieve it because ultimately that’s why he’s still is working

THE PUNDIT's PICKS: Best of 2024, Mid-Year Round-Up [*Part 1*]

Part 1 of 1,403.

Hey folks, it's been a while. Life is hectic, and I'm too old to have any idea who still uses a Tumblr account in 2024...but the good news is that I'm also too old to care. At this point I'm just going to keep doing this so that I'm able to track the onslaught of great new music that drops month to month, and also to appreciate the rare occasion when I can connect with a lesser known indy artist that's still young enough in the game to truly appreciate a shout-out for their talent, regardless of whether or not the writer doing the shouting has a large enough audience to make a direct impact on their financial future.

I can't believe we're approaching the midpoint of the year and this is my first song list of 2024. That being said, please believe this infreency has nothing to do with the volume of great music that's already been released this year. Quite the contrary, there have been a number of noteworthy albums, highlights, and even headline news (hey did you guys hear about that Drake & Kendrick feud from last month?). This year in rap has proven to be unpredictable in some of the best ways possible, continuing the trend of having attention grabbing music bubble up from the underground, but also paired with a number of interesting MC's from all over the globe with mainstream star potential that are making some noise in their respective circles.

In time, I believe 2024 will be remembered as a triumphant year for rap music, perhaps even a turning point for the genre (in terms of where we go from here). I'm here to provide some examples of some of my favorite songs of the year thus far. Keep in mind, this is just my first list, with plenty more planned to come (so please do not consider this list as all-inclusive of "the best" songs of the year, just the first batch)....here's *Part 1*, in no particular order:

Keys land with a coolness in Eddie's outstretched palm, sweaty and warm, blood pumping under the skin like a crimson whirlpool.

"I'm not about to argue with you any more, son," Wayne mumbles, shoulders slouched in surrender, "You wanna cruise around in that deathtrap, that's on you."

Eddie's mouth opens to bark out yet another instance of but it's not gonna be a deathtrap when I'm done with it! and recount all his promises of becoming a bonafide grease monkey, taking all the necessary measures to make the van good as new.

The van. His van.

He drops the argument, since Wayne's suit is always a good one to follow, and closes his fist around the keys. He's won this round. A ball of fire begins to ignite in his chest and if he's not totally hallucinating, Wayne, grumpy old Wayne, is fighting back a smile.

"I'll stay the speed limit, I swear."

The fuck he will.

"The fuck you will."

Eddie's guffaw echoes in the empty doorway as he trips over himself, running outside the trailer to embrace his new four-wheeled glory. Well, not new-- far from new, of course. She's a girl with a lotta miles on her, showing up and out in the paintwork he's going to make sure he manicures. She's no Impala but she is a Chevy, a beautiful broad-assed 1971 Chevy.

She's got the same birthday as Killer by Alice Cooper and Eddie is head over heels in love with her.

Eddie is also an incredibly reckless driver, so something this hardy is necessary. Evel Knievel over here would turn a Beemer into a pretzel soon as look at it, as evidenced by the Beemer he almost rams into while he's gunning it into Hawkins.

"Fucking watch it, freak!"

Eddie flings his head out the window as Alice keens from the stereo (that big, bumping, beautiful stereo) and wags his tongue in the direction of an irate Steve 'The Hair' Harrington, who'd just got that new set of wheels for his birthday. Eddie knew that--everyone knew that--because he wouldn't stop peacocking it around the parking lot at school.

Well, compared to Eddie's ol' beauty, that fucking thing was puny.

"Eat my dust, pretty boy!"

He cruises down the main drag of Hawkins, marveling at his view from the driver's side. His elevated seat. His hands clutching the wheel. He even tosses a gentlemanly salute to a young mom and infant daughter that crane their necks to stare at him rolling on by.

Ladies.

See this, this is what it's all about. He's finally got the war machine he deserves. His ticket to the open road, his getaway car out of dodge, his method for hauling assloads of equipment around (once Ronnie gets that drum head fixed). Even his--dare he even think it--chick magnet.

Chicks love dudes with cars. Chicks like dudes with vans even better, because there's room in the back. Privacy. Shit like that is hard to come by when you spend most nights sharing a trailer with your aging uncle whose night shifts keep getting cut.

Not-- not that Eddie is exactly drowning in missed opportunities, but should the opportunity ever present itself, he'll be ready.

He's sourcing a shag carpet.

Eddie makes a couple more turns around town, even cruises by the school for good measure-- you never know which cheerleaders are hanging around after hours.

The most important thing is he feels completely unshackled in the confines of this van. Totally impenetrable. This is a space that he doesn't feel guilty taking, a space he doesn't feel odd or inferior in. Motherfucker, this is his all his.

He slows down his speeding on purpose when returning to Forest Hills, as if Wayne doesn't already know he's assaulting those gas pedals.

He slows down as he approaches the Munson trailer. He slows, and slows, and slows, and whines to a halt where Al Munson slaps both hands on the front of the van.

"Hey, kiddo."

Al Munson, his father, has been locked up in Blackburn Correctional in Lexington, Kentucky for the past eight months. Eddie's forgotten what for, or he didn't care to listen in the first place. Al Munson was not supposed to be out for a long, long time.

Al Munson always manages to find a loophole.

He reaches through that loophole, and he takes and takes and takes.

Eddie holds his breath.

"What, your old man doesn't get a big hello? Maybe a congrats on flyin' the coop, jailbird?" Al laughs and it's warm like the whiskey he sometimes lets Eddie drink with him. Al laughs and the fucking nightingales sing, the world shakes, everything becomes technicolor except the cloud hanging over Eddie's head.

Because, as Eddie so observantly notices, Al didn't come here with a car. He probably walked his ass all the way to Forest Hills, or hitched with some poor sucker he buttered up with stories and cigarettes and charm.

Wayne lingers in the doorway of the trailer. He can't meet Eddie's eyes.

He knew this was the one thing I had going for me. He knew this was the one thing I had left. The only thing that's mine.

Except the papers for the van don't say that. The papers say Al Munson.

He was supposed to be gone for so much longer that Eddie had hoped he'd forget about the van. About Hawkins. Maybe even about him, once and for all, and Eddie could inherit the only truly good thing his shitheel father ever had going.

Al, while remarkably charming, is not a man with a lot of patience. He slaps the side of the van-- not hard, but smart. "Out of the chariot, Ed," he commands. "Let's go, boy. I gotta jet someplace."

It occurs to Eddie that he has an opportunity on his hands right here. A massive fuck-you type opportunity. He could just peel out. Throw the finger to Al, and to Wayne for betraying him and not warning him about this in due time. Speed off. Take off for Indy and figure it out from there. He's got a full-ish tank of gas.

The one thing he's missing is his father's charm. He won't get far without it. It's the kind of thing you can't say no to.

No one says no to Al Munson.

Eddie, Eddie with his hair growing long around his ears and his seized shoulders and his cloud hanging heavy with rain over his head, is not about to start now.

"Just warming her up for ya, pops."

I'd love to hear about An Inconvenient Union and the Geraskier werewolf AU!!

An Inconvenient Union is the original novel I've been working on since October. It's a m/m fantasy romance about a monk who has to impersonate his prince half-brother when his brother disappears right before important treaty talks with an enemy kingdom, only to end up betrothed in his brother's stead to the commander of said enemy nation's army.

Here's a snippet:

To Niko’s surprise, Commander Calaxis tipped back his head and let out a bark of laughter. “Where did you hear that?”

Niko blinked. “Rian.”

“And what did he tell you it meant?”

“Good day, my friend.”

Commander Calaxis shook his head. “You should never repeat anything you hear any of the guards saying to each other, especially not Rian. It’s most likely obscene and it’s definitely rude.”

“Ah,” Niko said. “So…”

“You just told me to go fuck a goat backwards.”

“Wonderful.” Diplomatic relations were off to a delightful start. Niko opened his mouth, desperate to find an excuse to return to camp and drink however much fresseberry mead was necessary to forget this conversation.

“Evos,” Commander Calaxis said.

“Pardon me?”

“Evos,” the commander said again. “It’s the word you’re looking for. It means ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ in Fae. If you’re greeting a person with a position of authority—a commanding officer, the Liege, a parent—you want ‘savut.’”

“Thank you,” Niko said, starting to turn away, face flaming. “I’ll keep that mind.”

“And if you’re greeting or parting from someone dear to you, you say ‘te ne vriss.’”

Niko paused, because the timber of Commander Calaxis’ voice had changed. “What does that mean?”

Commander Calaxis tilted his head to the side, considering. “The exact translation in Dulish would be ‘I’m with you.’ It’s not just a salutation, but a way to say that you missed them or will miss them.”

Niko wondered who the commander said ‘te ne vriss’ to, and then reminded himself that it didn’t matter. “Alright,” he said with a laugh. “No more vocabulary lessons from the guards.”

“That’s probably for the best,” Commander Calaxis said dryly. “Or next, you’ll be telling the Liege that they look like a sow’s inbred bastard and then we really might have a war.”

Geraskier werewolf AU is the fic I've been working on since the fall where Jaskier and Geralt get married as part as treaty negotiations between rival werewolf packs, but Jaskier isn't actually a werewolf, unbeknownst to his new husband. Am I a sucker for the arranged marriage and identity porn tropes? Who can say?

Ciri is asking him something. He forces himself to pay attention. “What was that, my dear?”

She gives him a deeply skeptical look and he reminds himself to dispense with pet names until she knows him better. “Are you any good?”

Jaskier shrugs in a show of modesty. “I haven’t had any complaints. Except for my next-door neighbor, but I think he’s unfairly biased against midnight concerts, personally.”

“Well, luckily for you, Geralt loves midnight concerts,” Lambert says, grinning the grin of a little brother fucking with an older sibling.

The dark look Geralt shoots at Lambert confirms Jaskier’s suspicion. “Hm.”

“Do any of you play?” Jaskier asks hopefully. He’s found that music is one of the easiest things to bond with another person about. Everyone has at least one popular artist they despise or one song that they drop everything to dance along to every time it comes on the radio.

“Lambert sings beautifully in the shower.” Aiden nudges his husband with a lopsided grin.

Coën’s lips twitch. “Uses his shampoo bottle as a microphone and everything.”

Lambert scowls at his husbands. “You like it.”

“I don’t,” Renfri says. “I can hear it from the other side of the fucking mountain.”

“And what about you?” Jaskier asks Geralt as the four of them begin a raucous debate about Lambert’s musical capabilities.

Geralt shrugs. “Not one for music.”

Of course he’s not. Jaskier smiles wider, hoping to hide his internal grimace. “So, you won’t be joining me for my midnight concerts, I take it?”

“No.”

“Don’t take it personally.” Lambert turns away from bickering with Renfri to clap Geralt on the shoulder. “Geralt’s too busy with Roach to develop a taste in music.”

been on t (oral gelcaps) for a couple months now and it's been wild. i knew going onto it that i didn't want to go """all the way""" or whatever, that i wanted to see what it would do and how i felt on it! and mostly: i feel good. i feel more like a dyke than ever, and i have less pain than ever (which the endo and i did suspect would happen, bc t is good for a lot of connective tissue issues and orthostatic and/or circulatory issues). but it's still just like... wild?

i think if i was trying to pass as fast as possible i'd experience quite a lot more anxiety about the process. but instead i've watched myself stay someone i recognize, and despite accidentally being on a much higher dose than i thought i was on (my body metabolises the oil in the capsules better than it's supposed to, apparently), the changes have been slow enough that i've been able to see them coming. i wake up in the morning surprised that my voice is still dropping. i sing, at least a little in the shower, every day and every day the notes that are comfortable change. my passagio changes, the places my voice wheezes into silence changes.

my weak mezzo-soprano is now a weak tenor that brings me wonderful joy every time i realize i can sing mountain goats songs or my favorite musical pieces in the right octave. i find myself more able than ever to articulate myself eloquently in zoom calls, and less fatigued after them. it turns out that despite not really ever thinking of myself as voice dysphoric, something's been lifted off my shoulders anyway. my body's changing in shape just a little, belly and shoulders filling out, butt less bubbled, and while i was anxious about that (i love my hourglass figure!), it's becoming clear to me that at least a little of that anxiety came from spending the entirety of my adult life sex working.

i look different in photographs now, in some unquantifiable way. my eyebrows have filled out. my breasts are just a tiny bit smaller, in a way that means, with my new belly and my sudden ability to push past my past weightlifting records, that i look dykey in the most wonderful way in a sports bra or ribbed tank. i took a picture today and for the first time saw in the sunlight on my jaw and the tendons of my neck a shape i didn't know i had been missing. i realised that actually, i don't miss the bits of my hourglass figure that i've lost a little! that my vanity wasn't hung on that specific image of myself. just on me, looking like me. feeling like me. approaching the version of me that i'm happy with now, mostly retired from sw and having nobody to dress for but myself: a lesbian, low-voiced and femme and visibly queer, moving and speaking with the grace that comes from comfort in their body.

i have no idea how long i'll stay on t. it's been a wild couple of months for other reasons, and i do think i want to switch methods and to a dose that's a little lower than i have now. but i'm feeling good about it, right now! i'm feeling like it's another part of finding out who i am, testing the boundaries of what it means to be me, and coming out stronger. i wish for the same for any and all of you, that you have the chance to do that if you want to.

Last Song: 10/27 was an especially devastating new album friday for me because it was not only the drop date for 1989 taylor’s version but also jenny from thebes, the mountain goats’ companion album to their seminal all hail west texas, which i know like the back of my hand. this morning while i was getting dressed i listened to “from the nebraska plant” again. i was so blindsided by this song when i was listening to the album for the first time. i had to stop what i was doing and listen and before i knew it tears were falling from my eyes. “jenny” is my favorite song from all hail west texas and the loving, bittersweet way that this song brings that narrative home is just… among their best work. the gentle guitar lick on the chorus, the comforting drums… it feels like riding a motorcycle down the highway at the sunset, slowly, reflecting on someone who changed you and is gone now. it wasn’t in your nature taking in the strays, but you handed me your helmet. i clung to you for days.

Last Movie: my first rewatch of a nightmare on elm street since seeing it for the first time last year! i love that movie and i love nancy thompson!

Fic writer asks!!

04 Where do you find inspiration for new ideas? When the primordial soup that is the inside of my brain has the right catalyst dropped into it, a little idea bubbles up to the surface. Catalyst may vary but is often a Mountain Goats lyric.

07 How do you choose which POV to write from? Most of the time, I start writing and that's how I find out whose POV it is. Everything I write is pretty feelings-first so it's just a matter of whose feelings are central to the story.

18 Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles? Before, during, and after. I hate coming up with titles, I often use song lyrics and stuff like that. I use temp titles that end up being the final titles because...temp is never temp. For the Live Oak series I've been waiting until the fic is done and then picking a line from the poem that I think works best as a title.

57 Do you prefer editing as you write, or waiting until it’s finished?  I do a bit of both. Each time I sit down to write I tend to reread at least part of what I have, which often leads to minor changes. Then before posting I obsessively reread and tweak (and then post, reread, find glaring problems that only became obvious upon posting, tweak further)

i choose tags based on how its meaning is close to the character. honestly idk what i'm doing, i just venture through poems and songs and even other people's samcore / deancore tags until i go insane. so!

Dublin Bass & Drum Duo TRUE HOME Drop Meditative Doom Record ‘Black Lotus’

There aren't a whole lot of bass and drum acts out there. Bell Witch, Big Business, Bardo, and Behoover come to mind (strangely, the majority of bass-led bands also choose names that begin with the letter "B"). What may not be as tough to pull off when tempos are swift, becomes a challenge when everything slows down to a doom's pace. And you want to strip the band of its (arguably) most popular instrument?

That's at least how the heavy underground felt until OM came along and blew our minds with the advent of Meditative Doom, sans guitar. Other bands have followed in those footsteps, including Zaum from New Brunswick and Breath from Oregon. Now from Dublin, Ireland comes bass & drum duo TRUE HOME with their own take on meditative doom in 'Black Lotus' (2023).

True Home's most accessible song is placed first on the album, "The Cry of the Mountain Hawk," featuring a slithering stoner-doom riff that sounds like a royalty fuzzified Tool. Vocals are droning and clean, not too distantly removed from Reverend Bizarre, and share a kinship with Sleep frontman Al Cisneros. This one's got a chorus that I'll probably find myself singing whilst making breakfast or taking out the trash. It's just something I do.

Beneath each song is the lulling sitaresque tone produced by programmed synth. It grounds us to the experience and becomes more and more comforting with eath encounter. "The Great Journey" takes a bluesy, jazzy, off-beat approach to Gregorian Chant, at least until things get electrified to work out all that nervous energy -- with irradiated noodling that rivals Swamp Ritual.

The intensity ramps up even more for "Sailing The Sand Dunes," in which the bass moves with big, sweeping gestures and stays busy as hell trying to keep the barge moving over barren Saharan hills and flats. This is the one, I'm sure, that'll get people headbanging at concerts.

The last two songs on the album usher us deeper into a realm of tranced-out introspection, with the mysterious, hazy, and hypnotic "Buddham Sagnahram Gachami" and the near 20-minute transcendental colossus, "Ascension Of The Astralnaut," featuring spoken word passages that serve perhaps to guide the listener into a state of general meditativeness.

The record is ideal for Cursed Monk Records, who specialize in dark musical esoterica. "The darker, weirder, and heavier the better," their motto goes. True Home's Black Lotus will be released on May 26th on compact disc and digital formats (pre-order here).

After suffering a dreadful bout with COVID (the Delta strain) in 2021, psychedelic, meditative doom was key to my mental, physical, and spiritual recovery. I'm pleased to have another band enter the fold. Stick True Home on a playlist with OM, Bong, Zaum, Breath, Saturnalia Temple, and Megalith Levitation.

The Bass and Drum combo balance between transcendent meditations and earth shattering heavy riffs.

For two people they move a serious amount of air at bone crushing volumes, helped by the droning modular synth providing a continuous atmosphere to get lost in.

have any tumblr tmg fans seen the sanguinare speculation? i’ve seen discussion on the subreddit - apparently there were postcards given out at the merch table last night with a qr code leading to this website (front of the postcard was the image from the website). folks on the subreddit are thinking it might be a surprise album drop, especially considering how long it’s been since they last released new music & the original plan for dark in here.

listen. i always liked werewolves more than vampires, and that’s because i just never really got the appeal of vampires - i was like, vampire-neutral. happy they existed because i know how much my friends love them. so i’m fairly certain the absolute first thing i said when i surfaced from reading @thebibliosphere‘s hunger pangs: true love bites is “i get it about vampires now.” 

i absolutely did not go into reading expecting to adore vlad as much as i do, but oh my god, is this what enjoying vampires has been like for the rest of you this entire time????? why did nobody tell me! seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i cannot recommend reading this enough, i’m never going to shut up about how much i love this book, & yes, that’s fully with the intent of being a fandom pied piper & dragging you all into this interest with me.
