why you should play elder scrolls online in 2023
Okay, I've been considering making posts about "why to play X game I love" but finally decided "what the hell, no time like the present." And since ESO is on my mind today, it gets first dibs!
Tumblr media
What is ESO??
It's an MMO set in the Elder Scrolls universe - think Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, etc. It's the Elder Scrolls theme park in the same way that FFXIV is the Final Fantasy theme park. But, in the same way, it's not exclusively for people who have experience with the previous games - it's a fun, immersive fantasy world whether you know anything about previous lore or not.
You should play ESO if ...
Tumblr media
You like immersive fantasy worldbuilding. Listen, if there's one thing the Elder Scrolls team can do, it's worldbuild like motherfuckers. Do you want a story that reaches back thousands of years and covers dozens of countries/empires/territories, where you can find lorebooks around every corner, and expansive essays on the internet about the briefest of details? ESO has you covered.
Tumblr media
You love overland exploration. This is ESO's bread and butter. The explorable areas are expansive and varied and absolutely gorgeous, and the game is built for the player who just wants to travel and collect things and see the sights. Tamriel has pretty much every biome you can imagine - you want medieval Britain? Head for High Isle! You want an Arabic-style desert? Alik'r Desert is your place! Rugged arctic landscape? Listen, there are FOUR SEPARATE Skyrim areas for you. You're like "I just want weird fantasy things that don't look like anywhere on earth?" Vvardenfell and its surrounding areas have you covered. You can explore as you play the story, you can go on a hunt for the perfect screenshot location, you can find an RP location that fits your character exactly, you can make it your goal to complete every exploration achievement in the game ... you can do it all.
Tumblr media
You want a game where exploration isn't gated behind your level. ESO made the switch to what they call "One Tamriel" fairly early in their development cycle - this means that all mobs and quests are synced to your level in the overworld, and you can start or go anywhere you want no matter how low level you are. You can play through the storyline in release order, or you can say "I want to start in the newest expansion," or you can go "listen I'm only here for vampires in Western Skyrim," all of these are valid and possible ways of playing. You don't have to go "man the new expansion looks great but I have to put in HOW many hours to get there??" It's all available to you from level 1!
Tumblr media
You love decorating houses. Listen, if there is one thing ESO does better than any other MMO (at least the ones I've played), it's the housing system. You can own ALL THE HOUSES. SO MANY HOUSES. Small and large and every conceivable style! You can buy land with no house on it, and build your own structures! You can decorate without having to learn how to glitch or press six buttons at once! And housing feeds very well into the rest of the gameplay - you earn furnishing plans from pretty much every conceivable gameplay system, so it becomes an excellent reason to go do your daily stuff and explore. And the housing community in ESO is one of the most creative groups I've ever seen, I could watch their YouTube videos and streams forever.
Tumblr media
You like MMOs that allow you to play mostly solo. None of the story progression is gated behind the need to group up. There is plenty of group content, but it's all optional. There are bosses across the landscape and in public dungeons that require multiple people to kill, but you'll always come across people who want to help kill them without having to group up. And with the last few expansions, you now have companions - NPCs you can unlock and have follow you around everywhere. They can be set and geared to perform any role - tank, healer, DPS - and the AI is good enough at any of those to get you through pretty much anything overland you want to do. (And as a side note, some of the companion quests are really good, and they've been getting really, really good voice actors for the companions themselves - see: Laura Bailey, Brandon Keener - and they have fun dialogue as you wander.)
Tumblr media
A couple of caveats:
If you play for story, your mileage will vary. Don't get me wrong, ESO has some very, very good stories within it! But it's not a linear story a la FFXIV or single player MMOs - it has a main storyline for the base game zones, and each DLC/expansion has its own storyline that sometimes connects into what happened in the base game, but for the most part ESO's story is a fragmented experience, and you have to go searching for the stories that connect most with you. Can you find them? Yes, but be ready to put in the time to look. (My personal recommendations? The vampire story that starts in Rivenspire and continues in Western Skyrim and The Reach is my absolute favorite; Elsweyr is also very good, but is more of a direct continuation of the base game story than anything else, so would probably need that context going in. A good portion of the fanbase will cite the larger Morrowind-Summerset storyline as the best the game has, and it's very good, but didn't quite stick with me as much as the others mentioned.) ESO tends to be more about the story of the world at large than about the stories of individual characters.
And speaking of story, the game is absolute balls at directing you to places where starting the story would make the most sense. If you want to experience the story in a vaguely linear fashion, here's what to do when you create a character - immediately head to whatever city is your chosen faction's starting city (Daggerfall, Auridon, or Stonefalls), and wander around until you trigger the "Soul Shriven in Coldharbor" quest. That starts the base game main story, and is the best place to start as a brand new player. The other tip: the fancy striped quest markers are indicative of the "main" story quest in each zone, do those when at all possible.
And speaking of factions, those only matter if you want to play PvP - and only Cyrodiil and Imperial City PvP at that. Otherwise, it's just flavor these days.
In conclusion:
ESO is my comfort "explore and collect" game - I find it very chill to just wander around, level new characters, dig up antiquities (ANTIQUITIES, my favorite side system, seriously I could look for leads and dig things up forever), collect materials to sell in my guild trader, and vaguely achievement hunt while listening to music or YouTube. The scenery is beautiful, the character creation is robust and turns out very cool looking characters, and the combat system is simple enough that I easily remember how to do things even if I've been away for a little while. And it is free-to-play, after buying the game; you don't need a subscription to access anything you've purchased, you just miss out on a few good quality of life features. (The craft bag, I could not live without my craft bag, seriously.)
Some version of ESO will be free on the Epic Game store starting tomorrow - my assumption is that it will be the version that contains all DLC/expansions except the Necrom chapter, which was just released last month. I highly recommend picking it up if you play on PC, just to check it out, if anything above sounds appealing to you! (And if you want to splurge, I can very highly recommend Necrom - the new class it introduces is maybe my favorite class to play yet, the two companions it introduces are fantastic, and Apocrypha is a fascinating area to explore if you like creepy eldritch horror type stuff.)
If you want to know more about ESO, just give me a shout! And if you're a mutual who decides to try it, hit me up, I have many gifts to give people!

Is Palia enough of a Farm Game for me to post here?
Maybe, it might be, it's got a lot of Farm Game elements at least
Tumblr media
I'm going to go ahead and make a really long post about it because it's my blog and I can do what I want and I've been following this game for a while now and if you like what you see I'd appreciate it if you used my Refer-A-Friend link if you want to make your own account to play this used someone else's Refer-A-Friend link if you want to make your own account to play this because I got all the stuff already and you should give the benefits to someone else who needs them
Disclaimer: I've never played this game, it's not out yet, I've never done the alpha and I don't work for them, all the information and photos are from Palia's website, social media, and discord
What Is Palia?
Palia (pronounced pay-lee-uh) is an upcoming cozy mmo being developed by Singularity 6
It's a Free-To-Play game which will only monetize optional cosmetics, it will not be a pay-to-win game, there are no loot boxes, you can read more about it here
Tumblr media
Palia is going into closed beta on August 2nd, 2023 and into open beta about a week later on August 10th, 2023 for PC. It's also coming to Nintendo Switch this holiday season
You can create your account now for a chance to get into the closed beta, you can use my a Refer-A-Friend link, I'll talk more about it later
Cool, What's The Game Like Though?
You play as a human that recently returned to the world of Palia after all of them disappeared thousands of years ago, so mysterious~ The story unfolds as you make friends with NPCs and build yourself a new home
In Palia you can:
Fish
Forage
Hunt
Mine
Catch insects
Cook
Make furniture
And garden! Which is basically farming ;)
You can also befriend and romance NPCs like these two:
Tumblr media
I don't know all of the ones you CAN romance because I couldn't find a specific list but they have confirmed romantic options are not limited by gender and are also completely optional
A lot of these are pretty standard Farm Game fare so I feel like it might be fairly appealing to y'all, it is at least to me
You can also play with other people since it's an mmo, or solo, they said that almost everything can be done alone but might be easier or more fun with friends (we could be in game friends when it comes out c: make sure to tell me your character's name though)
Okay, What's The Link You Keep Bringing Up?
In order to play Palia, you need to make an account (regardless of if you're planning on playing on PC or Switch) which can be done now even though the game isn't out. In order to help reach more users the devs made a Refer-A-Friend promotion where if you have an account, you get a link to share with your friends (or strangers on the internet) in hopes 5 people will use it to make their account so you get cool in game stuff
Tumblr media
I want got the stuff. Please use someone else's link, there's a lot of them in Palia's discord in the Refer-A-Friend section
When you use someone's Refer-A-Friend link to make your account, YOU get a fruit basket item in game! and the ability to attempt to get people to use your new code to get those items up there, it's absolutely multi-level marketing but they need players and I everyone want items
Conclusion
I think this game looks fun, I'm not sure if I'll keep talking about it, it really could just be a Game With Farming and not a Farm Game, time will tell but I had to take the opportunity of hocking my Link here since I was getting nowhere on my personal blog or in their discord (but now I've got it, thank you!!)
Palia is doing a gameplay preview presentation thing tomorrow at 10am PT on youtube and twitch, check that out if you'd like to see more

*These are not official groupings, just mine.
EARLY (1987-1993)
Mainline games released: I, II, III, IV, V.
Other notable releases: the Legend series, Mystic Quest
Established the formula & series mainstays--job classes, summons, chocobos & moogles, etc.
These games were relatively simple at first, but soon became trailblazers for epic storytelling in RPGs--especially IV (or initially II in North America).
Pixel guys.
Mostly known by their many (many, many) remasters and remakes.
Modern audiences might find their stories rote and their gameplay unnecessarily difficult, but they still enjoy a tiny, vocal fanbase.
GOLDEN (1994-2001)
Mainline games released: VI**, VII, VIII, IX, X.
Other notable releases: Tactics, Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon, Anthology, Chronicles
With the formula established & with the more powerful hardware of fifth- (and later sixth-) generation consoles, FF pushed boundaries and graphical limitations to produce their most ambitious games (and marketing campaigns) yet. You might say they succeeded, for better or worse; Final Fantasy VII is generally considered to be the very first AAA video game.
The era that the majority of the FF fanbase on the Internet is most nostalgic for, a fact that might inspire either your own misty-eyed recollection of the good ol' days, or an overwhelming desire to snap the rose-tinted glasses. Or both.
Saw the first of many (many, many) ports across different systems--in part to give English-speaking audiences access to the early games they missed, but also as blatant cash-grabs.
Modern audiences who have no nostalgia for this era often voice that they find stylized 3D polygons much more difficult to acclimate to than the pixel guys.
**FFVI could arguably fall under the early era. If I'd made this poll fifteen years ago, when the division of fans between VI and VII was much more stark, that's where I would have put it. However, this poll is also about how modern audiences tend to think about their favorite FF games, and FFVI enjoys a nostalgic fanbase on par with those of the other games of the golden era. Search for it on any "best FF games of all time" list and you'll see what I mean.
COMPILATION (2002-2008)
Mainline games released: XI, XII.
Other notable releases: Crystal Chronicles, X-2, Compilation of FFVII (Before Crisis, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, etc.), FFXII: Revenant Wings, the Tactics Advance series & the War of the Lions remake of the original Tactics, the DS remakes of III & IV, the first Dissidia. (Also of note, though not directly beneath the FF umbrella, was the introduction of Kingdom Hearts.)
The era of sequels, remakes, remasters, crossovers, and extended universes, shepherded by the Square Enix merger. Only two mainline games were released in this period, and the one that was not an MMO was an entry in the newly-formed "Ivalice Alliance" (contrary to the desires of one of XII's principal developers, Yasumi Matsuno, who left the project before it was finished).
While of course we've seen plenty of sequels & remakes since, this era went all-in on expanding Final Fantasy to the behemoth it is now. FFVII, its golden child, was showered with prequels and sequels. Crossovers were all the rage. Even games that were not strictly "Final Fantasy" games were retroactively roped into one of the existing canon masses, i.e. Vagrant Story into the Ivalice Alliance.
This was also the boom of handhelds, like the PSP and the beloved DS. Mainline games were saved for the heavyweight home consoles, while other titles were dispersed across the smaller systems.
Very few "new" worlds with no preexisting ties to the other games (outside of the shared banner of Final Fantasy) were created in this time, XI and Crystal Chronicles being the few exceptions.
If you enjoyed seeing the games you loved from the 90s getting more content, this era was a delight. If you'd rather the original entries were left alone, it was a painful sign of things to come.
EXPERIMENTAL (2009-2015)
Mainline games released: XIII, XIV (twice)
Other notable releases: XIII-2 & Lightning Returns, Type-0 (also a member of XIII's Fabula Nova Crystallis series), Dissidia 012, the Theatrhythm series, the first expansion for XIV (Heavensward), Record Keeper, Brave Exvius
FF's darkest era. XIII was the first time FF tried something new since XI--brand new world, female protagonist, fresh spin on the old ATB formula--and it fell just short of catastrophic. XIII and its sequels were not well-received (though whether this negative backlash was "deserved" is another story). The game that would later become XV was originally intended to be Versus XIII, an entry in Fabula Nova Crystallis. Between XIII's poor reception and Versus XIII's fraught development, this didn't happen.
The initial release of XIV, on the other hand, was catastrophic. It was so bad that the entire thing had to be rebooted.
The good news is XIV's reboot, A Realm Reborn, did so well that XIV is widely considered one of the best MMOs of all time. The reboot is also one of the earliest examples of video game "rehabilitation," in that a dramatic change or update to the original game transforms a negative experience into a positive one, and thus scrapes back the good will of the player. (No Man's Sky is a non-FF example.)
The virulent criticism of XIII has softened over the years, and it enjoys a small, dedicated fanbase.
You started to see FF dip into mobile games at this point, too.
MODERN (2016-2023)
Mainline games released: XV, XVI
Other notable releases: World of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, Dissidia NT, Dissidia Opera Omnia, Final Fantasy VII Remake, the pixel remasters of I-VI, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Reunion, Crisis Core: Reunion, a slew of expansions for XIV
The long-anticipated release of XV heralded a new age (as well as a movie and an anime). In contrast to XIII, XV was very popular, and put FF back on the map. People loved the boys' road trip.
XIV is still going strong. I don't play MMOs but I'm happy for them.
The remakes & remasters are back, and looking more realistic than ever (if you're into that sort of thing). Look at how many individual pores you can see on your old favorites' faces! The most successful of these is the Final Fantasy VII Remake, which is not a remake as much as it's a conversation with the original game, a move that both drew in a new audience and softened (some of) the diehard og-VII fans who disliked the rest of the Compilation.
Stranger of Paradise is an odd duck attempting to evoke the uncanny valley weirdness of the PS3 era. YMMV on if it worked.
The modern FF games step further out of the boundaries of what an FF game is, dropping ATB combat in favor of real-time action that's all the rage these days. In a first, XVI doesn't have any party members. For the folks who've grown tired of ATB and crave the fast-paced action of the modern day, XVI was a hit (though, I've heard, it failed to deliver on the story).
The endless conversation about whether FF ought to be evolving this far outside of its "formula" (whatever one believes that to be) might feel tired to the average FF fan. But, going forward, it's worth talking about the ways in which FF has neglected to evolve, or even gone backwards: such as the dev team of XV stating that the inclusion of women would cause their core bros to act unnaturally, thus why there are no female party members in the game, or the dev team of XVI deliberately not including a diverse cast because their fantasy game is inspired by medieval Europe.
Tell me which era you voted for in the tags, and what your personal favorite FF game is!

Fair Warning: This post is very rambly. Super fucking long. And has a bunch of paragraphs about topics that to be quite frank deserve their own post. This is me TLDRing like 7 different essays because I have a lot to say and can't shut the fuck up but this is despite it all still a tumblr post.
The fact that SSO exists at all in the year 2023 is not an achievement in and of itself.
That's the TLDR to this post I'm about to write because that's basically what I think, but there is a longer discussion to have here. And I think it's a discussion worth having because despite it all we still live in a world where gender makes people irrationally fucking mad, and so therefore here I am to talk shit about a horse game which I have called mediocre all day.
Well, if you don't want to read this entire thing, here's all you need to know:
If Animal Crossing in the year of 2020 can define the first year of the pandemic for basically half the internet, then SSE can optimise their game a little better in the year 2023.
And here's wonderwall: (But before wonderwall, obvious disclaimer that I'm just one cis not-het woman Swede who has opinions about things, I'm not going to solve centuries of oppression on my fucking tumblr dashboard. Neither are SSE gonna solve it, nor immortalise it, with their mediocre MMO, we all know this we are smart, let's go.)
To SSO's credit, I think it's nice that SSE has wholly embraced the fact that they are a very feminine game primarily played by and targeted towards young girls, despite it all we still need more of that, and it's cool that they're trying the most. (Just wish they wouldn't completely throw their especially above average transmasc audience under the bus for  this but that is genuinely not my post to make as I am not transmasc and this post isn't about that, but all I'm saying is that SSE aren't flawless and I was here for both 2011 and 2022 so I happen to know when they literally lie about why this game was created in the first place.)
However,
There is a difference between "We want to bring quality to this audience which usually doesn't get quality" and "Because we're the only ones targeting this audience we don't need to worry about quality". Settling for the latter, especially today, isn't actually that progressive nor is it helping anyone, especially if we're talking about the game's general quality.
So, I know that talking about like, what is a "good" game or whatever will always be a wall to wall conversation, because everyone has different ideas of what good means. (see: Some people going "I enjoy this so it's good" and some going "I enjoy this but it Isn't good" at Dorian's poll) This isn't a problem at all it's simply how the human experience works. However, if we're talking about the good as in "objective" quality, then I think we need to remember something.
It's not 2011 anymore, and being a girls game, standalone, isn't an achievement anymore. We expect some fucking effort by now.
We don't live in a world where you as an 8 year old kid have to pick between playing COD or playing SSO exclusively (a choice made in 2011 by me as an 8 year old for reference, I literally was there, don't worry). We have a lot wider a selection of games to choose from, and we live in an industry which has also gotten a Lot better at actually celebrating less traditionally masculine games.
For example, Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, to name two examples, would probably be pretty dismissed in 2011, had they released then, because they're games that in general are seen as more feminine. (Slower, cute aesthetics, about farming, has cute little guys in them in AC's case.) But nowadays, they're some of the most popular games around, and they're games that most people, regardless of gender, have played. And obviously people still make fun of them, but it isn't cool to make fun of them anymore. Y'all remember when everyone and their mother was playing New Horizons as it came out during the perfect time for everyone to play it just as the pandemic started? And that's a really feminine game if we want to divide games into feminine and masculine, which we at the end of the day will do because humans are obsessed with binary opposition. And it still defined a whole year for a whole bunch of people!
And obviously you might say that it's unfair to compare little ol' SSO to these games. And it is. If we're comparing them as games on a technical equal ground. But we're not. I'm exemplifying that games that are more feminine/played by a lot of women don't have to suck.
So by, conciously or subconciously, implying that SSO Can't be as good as other games or Shouldn't Be Expected To Be simply because women's games just Are worse, you're dismissing the fact that feminine games Do succeed, especially recently. Not only on the market, but as entertainment. And no matter what game you make, no matter what damn resources you have, you better make sure that your audience can fucking play it with the specs you yourself recommend. Because letting a company get away with settling for mediocrity further normalises girls' games not needing to be as good because they're already so shit that someone even trying is good enough. Which in 2023, is Not good enough. Even young girls deserve not to shill out tens of thousands, which they Do Not Have, for super PCs just because SSE forgot to optimise their open world game.
Lastly, all I'm saying is that if we're going to say "Yes, SSO is good." Don't follow it up with "Compared to women's games from 2005 that are so dead nobody remembers them anymore." Because SSO is a game that exists in 2023, and at some point we have to acknowledge that. And if this game wants to survive another decade, I think the first people who need to move away from 2011, is its audience.
Women’s games don’t have to suck. And implying that they do says more about you than it does about the game. Especially if your idea of “good standard” for women’s games. are almost 20 years old. At some point, we All have to move into the present times. Even if your game of choice is a little behind.

Secret Origin
Tumblr media
I'm just an old time Warcraft nerd who's too dumb to quit. My first WC game was Warcraft II, when I was in high school. I gravitated toward the Horde because they were funnier. I liked the game, but wasn't too good at it. Jump ahead to the release of Warcraft III, it's a whole other thing. I read all the lore in the huge manual. I was completely taken with the concept of orcs as once noble, tragic victims trying to make their way in the world and atone for their crimes. A friend of mine had me read some of the novels. I was suddenly way, way into the setting. Plus, I knew a lot of people who played WC3. I enjoyed the Orgrimmar campaign in Frozen Throne with no idea it was more or less a test run for WoW.
Tumblr media
But I didn't like MMOs. I wasn't sure about WoW. Then I got into the beta. I hauled my whole-ass desktop over to the house of the same friend who loaned me those books, and we were up til 4am downloading the client and then getting started. Gormorash the orc warrior was born that night (And so was Skarsnik the troll hunter, but he lost interest after BC). I was immediately sold. Running around Azeroth at ground level, full of detail from the RTS games, was a ton of fun. Gormorash went on many strange adventures in beta, like a hilariously inept "raid" on Westfall where half our group died before we got there and none of us were even level 60.
Tumblr media
Then Gormorash was rebooted on Argent Dawn US when the game launched, a member of <Flaming Skull Clan> with several other friends of mine.
Tumblr media
By middle 2005, almost literally everyone I knew played WoW. My oldest friends, friends from college, friends from the internet, relatives. Basically 2 friends and my parents were the only people not playing. Friends of mine who didn't know each other met and bonded through WoW. It was a glorious time.
Tumblr media
By the end of 2006, I'd been through 2 guild collapses and one server move, as they opened up free transfers to Eitrigg and my friends all took it. I wasn't sure I'd keep playing. The novelty had worn off for most of my friends. I wasn't that into raiding, and doing Arathi Basin over and over was only so interesting (Gormorash just lived in Hammerfall for like a year). I was maybe gonna quit. And then, in early 2007, my brother found 2 Collector's Editions of BC just sitting on a shelf in a store, and asked if I wanted one. I had the vanilla CE, but I'd missed BC when they were released, and didn't buy BC at all. He bought them and shipped me one, and we leveled 60-70 together. It was a lot of fun.
Tumblr media
Along the way, I started a new guild with some online friends, and Gormorash is still in it. He's never missed an expansion. Most people have fallen off the wagon. Our guild typically only has 3 active members at any given time these days, but that's fine with me. Sometimes a couple people come back for major content. It was lore that got me into all this, and that remains my primary motivator for playing. My endgame is more PvP and leveling alts than raiding, but the game has literally never supported those 2 things better than right now (2023), so that's pretty good. I still have a good time. And that's why I have hundreds of screenshots to choose from stretching from the 2004 open beta to just a few days ago to post on this blog. With the sad exception of most of 2006, lost in a hard drive failure, I have a comprehensive collection of every screenshot I ever took, and that's what this blog is all about.
Tumblr media
I've made a few other Gormorashes on other servers, but rarely leveled them very far. Someone out there made a Gormorash that isn't me, a fact that shocked me when I found out. Who stole my name? Was it you? I have characters of every race on both factions, but still tend to prefer Horde. If you see me, say hello!
Tumblr media
Gormorash is an orc warrior who came of age in the camps. With his brother, Rugurrash, he's led a guild of adventures for many years, with trusty allies Snarfner, Vallkillmore and Canon rounding out the core group. His hair's started to gray after saving the world 8 or 9 times, traveling through space and time and the realms of death, but he's still out there, still exploring, still getting into trouble and mostly getting back out of it. He's an alchemist and herbalist in his spare time, and has a completely unmanageable collection of pets. He is really, really tired of being forced to fight his own Warchief, and really hopes the gods don't lean on that already very tired trope again in the future.

Soon the heads advertised the game as an open world survival MMO RPG when it really was a horrible extraction shooter. The game came out with extreme backlash and Charley’s career as a developer was basically over as his name was part of it.
What made matters worse, the company shut down and left him jobless and said heads, the brothers, of the company made a cope post via ChatGPT blaming the game’s shutdown on bloggers and influencers while dismissing the allegations doubling down saying they will continue to make games and the only thing that would stop them is if they were killed. Charley ended up buying some weapons from a military stockpile and then broke into their office while letting his workers who were clearing out leave then shot two of the brothers before getting arrested. He was a divisive figure in the media because no one else was hurt in his spree and he had good intentions to make his former bosses pay and made sure no young and up and coming talent like him would get abused. Charley had no regrets and died in prison choking on a steak where he went to Hell. Now as Pix, Charley has a second lease on life and became a famous game developer after signing with Vox and became a rising overlord by having thousands of souls under his contract.
During his stint, Pix met Verosika Mayday during a VO session when Vox wanted a celebrity talent in it. The two quickly became friends despite not being a fan of celebrity voice actors as the two went through similar situations. After that, they decided to start dating.
Personality: Pix is a rather interesting sinner as he was simply pushed too far by his environment and had good intentions before committing his sin. He is very much a kind person who is loyal to his workers and would offer his hand during development. His loyalty to his workers is exemplified when he had a food hall in his building and would give his employees enough time to refine his games while giving them a mandatory four hour break alongside living spaces in case they want to work overtime.
He is very passionate about his craft hence why his games are known to be groundbreaking because of the effort him and his team put onto them. But he's also very demanding and prefers to hire very experienced developers instead of new talent into the fold. This rather demanding attitude made him one of the more elite developers of Hell itself. Pix also greatly dislikes people who mistreat their workers and also sexual harassers like Valentino who he threatened to kill when he saw him harass one of his devs.
His kindly demeanor also makes him one of the most wanted overlord in Hell to work for as his contracts are less than owning one’s souls but more business based. In fact, the ones who take the contract get benefits like pay and sick days alongside housing at the same time. Under Pix, nothing much changes for the contracted except he demands proper behavior and work ethics.
Pix is also known to be very disgusted and angered by people who blame video games for problems. He sees it as power hungry assholes trying to blame something to get more influence over others.
But despite his kindly attitude, Pix can be a perfectionist. This resulted in his games having long development years at times as he’s known to nitpick. Another part is that his passion for developing is so strong that he finds himself not getting enough sleep…or little sleep. In a way, his passion became a Hell of its own.
There is also another darker side as he would literally execute any workers who are being deviants or anyone who is being rambunctious. This led to him killing a worker for sexually harassing a coworker and also shooting someone in the head on live television in an award show when they ran up stage and interrupted him during his speech.
Pix also had greater ambitions and wanted to become an overlord like his grandfather Vox who he is working for. He scouts for talent that are down on their luck and need help resulting in his fellow workers to hold great admiration for him. Pix sought to change the system of Hell by leading by example as his kindness and eye for talent in programming helped him to become an up and coming overlord.
Although he can be known to be very power hungry at the same time. This stemmed from the feeling of hopelessness he had as an overworked game developer. Because of this, he always wants to be in charge and will do anything to stay up top. A trait similar to his grandfather Vox.
His relationship with Verosika Mayday got off to a rocky start as he wasn’t a fan of celebrity voice talent. But the two began to hang out more and more before “practicing lines” for his script in the game. The two officially began dating though their relationship was met with some eyebrows raised as he’s a sinner and she’s a hellborn. Plus Vox wasn’t exactly a fan of it either. Pix tries his best not to let Verosika down and Verosika also is trying her best not to repeat the same mistake.
Abilities
Demonic Transformation: Almost similar to Alastor, Pix can turn into a being made of pure pixels.
Digital Materialization: Can manipulate artificial light and project it as hard-light projections. This resulted in him creating weapons, holograms and even his own minions.
Skillset
Marksmanship: Pix is known to be a great marksman thanks to learning from a relative and used his skills to murder his former bosses.
Sense of detail: He looks into all of his games before release and would discover bugs that weren't there alongside adding details to make them immersive.
Skilled Developer: In life and in death, Pix was a very talented video game developer who would aim high most of the time. He knows the ins and outs of programming.

hi so a friend dm'd me like "lmao new winner for fastest mmo end of service announcement" and said it was some game called World II World, released february 2023 with end of service announced at the end of may
and i looked into it and this is the most fucking absurd concept i've ever seen for a mobage and it is immediately apparent why it failed
you see, this is a single-player mobile gacha rpg
except i just lied to you
it's actually two
Tumblr media
you. you are playing two rpgs simultaneously. you move and menu and battle in two SEPARATE, INDEPENDENT BOXES that are both fucking tiny on account of this being a cell phone game and unlike peak media the world ends with you there are no cool sync mechanics where you use both halves in tandem no they DONT EVEN GET INTO BATTLES AT THE SAME TIME UNLESS YOU MAKE THEM AND THEY DON'T INTERACT AT ALL OUTSIDE OF CUTSCENES
Tumblr media
LIKE FUCKING LOOK AT THIS HELLO??? THESE CUTSCENES ARE PLAYING AT THE SAME TIME, FULLY VOICED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER TALKING ABOUT ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PLOTS HOW ARE YOU MEANT TO FOLLOW THIS????
oh and don't even get me started on the gacha. having gacha is already a crime, having gacha in a SINGLE PLAYER GAME (it doesn't even have a friend list) is even more of a crime, but the gacha characters are RESTRICTED TO ONE SIDE OF THE SCREEN THAT YOU CANNOT CHOOSE
IMAGINE BREAKING MAX PITY ON A 5* THAT'S ON THE WRONG FUCKING HALF OF THE SCREEN
Tumblr media
WHAT IN THE NAME OF OUR LORD KOTARO UCHIKOSHI IS GOING ON HERE. I'M ALL FOR INTERTWINING NARRATIVE AND GAMEPLAY BUT. ON A CONCEPTUAL LEVEL THIS IS NOT SO MUCH A TRAIN WRECK AS IT IS A CRITICAL MASS OF INCREASING TRAINWRECKINESS. A FUCKING TRAIN SINGULARITY.
Tumblr media
THIS FUCKING THING LOOKS LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE A SOAP CUTTING GIF ON THE LEFT SIDE AND FAMILY GUY FUNNY MOMENTS ON THE RIGHT WHAT IS HAPPENING im literally shitting and pissing your pants from a game design perspective this is a monstrosity
anyway they announced end of service because they were unable to come up with anything fun also they're keeping all the money from premium currency sales lmao byeeeee

Cherrymochi-developed occult RPG EXIT VEIL to be published by DANGEN Entertainment
Gematsu Source
Tumblr media
DANGEN Entertainment will publish Cherrymochi-developed occult RPG EXIT VEIL for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam, the companies announced. A release date was not announced.
An early development build of EXIT VEIL will be playable at the DANGEN Entertainment and Cherrymochi booths at Tokyo Game Show 2023, which will run from September 21 to 23 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.
Here is an overview of the game, via DANGEN Entertainment:
EXIT VEIL is an enthralling new occult RPG. Players will embark on a mesmerizing journey through the dark-psychedelic labyrinth of EXIT VEIL as Tori, a lost soul navigating a beautiful yet terrifying world on the brink of decay. Drawn into this realm by a cryptic plea from a long-lost family member, Tori finds herself ensnared in a world where the ethereal and the mundane intertwine—a realm dominated by Archetypes, Egregores, Servitors, Daemons, Angels, and The Machine-Elves. Confronted with a malevolent force of decay lurking deep within the Labyrinthine Realms, players will have the power to guide Tori towards restoring harmony and healing the realms. With the fate of these realms hanging in the balance, players must choose whether Tori will restore harmony or wander lost within the labyrinth forever. At the core of EXIT VEIL lies an innovative and immersive gameplay experience centered around the mystical world of Tarot. As they explore, players will immerse themselves in the uniquely crafted EXIT VEIL tarot deck, unlocking insights that extend beyond the confines of the game and into the realm of self-discovery. This fully integrated tarot card system will guide players as they seek to heal the realms, discover their true selves, and unearth the enigma that lies at the heart of it all. As players collect tarot cards, they’ll engage in tense, turn-based battles reminiscent of MMO healer classes where they are always moments away from oblivion. The EXIT VEIL tarot deck not only powers the player’s in-game abilities but also serves as a bridge to concealed secrets within the game world. A physical EXIT VEIL TAROT deck will also be available, intertwining with the game and providing a portal to hidden mysteries. Developer Cherrymochi commented they plan to infuse EXIT VEIL with elements they adore in JRPGs: intricate, twisting narratives, characters grappling with their inner truths, and strategic turn-based combat.

Just saw that there's a new game on Switch called "Fashion Dreamer". It looks fun, and kinda reminds me of Style Savvy or an early 2000s flash MMO with a more contemporary feel and style.
The thing that gets me, though, is that it's got a lot of customization options-a wide variety of skin tones, hair styles, makeup, even the ability to play as a man, which is a nice change of pace from the fashion games I knew and loved (dress-up games can and should be enjoyed by everyone!), but...I couldn't help but notice that there weren't any plus-sized options? At least not from the footage I've seen. Granted, the game JUST came out, so I might be wrong, but...dang, fucked up if true.
And if it IS true, then...why? The Sims have been able to adjust their clothing models to fit with fatter characters for what feels like forever now, but this game can't? My guess is that it wouldn't "fit in" with the whole "influencer" theme the game has going on, what with a virtual world where you're trying to be a fashion influencer and all.
Yknow, I didn't really *mind* not being able to make a character fat or even just a bit chubbier when I played Style Savvy DS. I just. I don't know, I guess I thought I was just going to stop being fat at some point, like I would magically glow-up into a skinny person and wear all the cute clothes I wanted. But now? I feel like I should be able to do that! I can do it in the Sims, why couldn't I do that in a game that's all about fashion and personal expression?
Like, I get a game with a specific style not letting you change character proportions, like Animal Crossing or Pokemon or Stardew Valley. And I get a game not being able to change the model shapes of the clothing items to account for changes in proportions due to tech constraints or budget or whatever. I do. But, this is a very polished looking fashion game with lots of customization options! They couldn't even make, like, a slightly pudgier model? I've seen PICREWS make slightly pudgier and even fat models for crying out loud!
TL;DR I don't wanna pay 50 bucks for a fashion game in 2023 if I can't make my model have at least a lil more weight on her bones then the stick thin anime character default models.

"Finished" PC Build
Backstory: Starting 2023 I was still running a cobbled together mess of a PC, the heart of which was a Dell Studio XPS desktop from 2010. Yes, THIRTEEN YEARS old. I got 2 of them from a gaming company in 2012 for the price of a tank of gas, thanks to knowing someone working there that had been tasked with E-wasting all the Windows PCs. Company was switching to iOS dev.
Anyway, at its heart was the Dell Mobo, which featured a 1st Gen i5-920. By this point, the OG GPU was long gone and I had "upgraded" with a 1050TI. 16gigs of DDR3 RAM. This basic as hell setup had served me admirably for a decade, for a couple reasons.
I run Linux.
I have never been a HEAVY PC GAMER. Sure, I have gamed on PC since I first got one in 2005 (yeah, kinda late to the game, considering I was almost 30, lol), but I mostly used my PC for World of Warcraft, other similar MMOs, and what are now called Indie games on Steam. I've had consoles from like 6yrs old, and I tend to prefer them as they are the cheap option for gaming. I appreciate what a modern PC can do (esp lately with RT etc) but like, more often than not PC gaming can be as much of a chore as it can be fun.
Now, starting around March 2023, that old PC began having strange errors with the RAM, which would cause Firefox to crash tabs/completely, among other things. Eventually it broke my Linux Mint OS badly enough it just stopped allowing me to login. Finally figured out the HDD I had was failing and got an SSD. Installed Garuda on it and pretty quickly realized I had Mobo issues as the RAM was still reporting less DIMMs than it had, half the time.
At this point, a friend that was aware of the issues offered to mail me an i5-6400, to build a "new" system around. Naturally I accepted and bought a Fractal Meshify 2, some new DDR4 RAM, DeepCool Gammax, and a used MSI Krait Gaming Mobo. Stuck the new parts in the new case, and moved over storage/GPU from old PC. Booted and updated the OS, then launched WoW. Still getting 10fps in Valdrakken. Shit. Guess I need to upgrade this GPU.
So I bought an RX 6800. Stuck it in the case and booted. Updated the OS, which brought the Mesa drivers on board. Launched WoW again. 10fps again. What the fuck. Thought maybe swapping from Nvidia to AMD might have left over some driver mess, so I fresh installed Garuda and got all set up. Logged WoW Main again. STILL 10fps. WTF. Took my Main to SW, stood in front of the bank, then logged an alt with NO UI. Holy shit, there's a 35fps difference between them. My UI was broken, lol. Spent a day fixing that. Now I get 20fps in Valdrakken, but 55ish everywhere else. This is good.. but... What if I upgraded the core to something current gen, say AM5?
Finally we arrive at the part the title of this post suggested, building the "new" PC. I went to Newegg and picked out a Ryzen 5 7600X, MSI Mag B650 Tomahawk WIFI Mobo, G.SKILL FlareX5 32g RAM kit, and a TFORCE 2TB M.2 SSD. I also got a "free" 1TB Sata SSD with the CPU, it was also a TFORCE. The following are the pics of the "build" process. There will also be an aside for a complication. ProTip: be real fucking sure everything you want to put into a PC is absolutely compatible. Some things say they are when they aren't. You'll see what I mean.
Tumblr media
Here's the parts laid out and ready to be installed.
Tumblr media
This Mobo has a ton of IO.
Tumblr media
The iFixit "Pro Tech" toolkit. I got it on sale for I wanna say 80 bucks a few months ago, as of today it's listed for $75, and I think it's definitely worth the money.
Tumblr media
Here we see the 3 M.2 slots. 2 of them have included heat sinks. Nice.
Tumblr media
ProTip: Remember to peel the fucking plastic off these thermal pads, cause they don't really work with it on there.
Tumblr media
Like a glove.
Tumblr media
ProTip: it's real damn important to make sure you put the RAM in the proper dual channel config on an AMD system. On this motherboard there is a little diagram pointing out that the slots the sticks are in clearly say "first" on them, which is a nice touch. If you look closely, you can barely make out the very fuzzy diagram printed just above the heat sink bracket on the right hand side of the CPU.
Tumblr media
Storage in place with the little "carder heat sink" strip in place. This SSD came with its own heat sink but I'm going to use the one that came with the board.
Tumblr media
Like so.
Tumblr media
And here's the board, ready to go into the case for further assembly.. however, it was at this point that i realized that the EVGA 650w PSU I had didn't have two 8pin(4x4) CPU cables. I got it open box, no manuals etc, and could have sworn it had 2 cables but I was wrong. Makes sense, really, 650 watts would be cutting it too close with this build. Bummer.
Ok, well I can at least move over my DeepCool Gammax heat sink. I looked at the listing from when I bought it and it says "AM5 compatible". I watched a vid that said "hey as long as your cooler doesn't use a back plate, it should work with AM5"
LIES, BOTH OF THEM. I tried to get the DeepCool on there but the brackets didn't quite line up, and then even if I could kinda fudge it a little to make that work, the screws were threaded differently. Fuck. So at this point, in the middle of a somewhat heavy storm, I had to make a run to Best Buy and hope the store really did have the things the website said it did. Thankfully, it did (and I guess yay for living in a decent area or something? cause I've heard stories about BBs having like 3 PSUs from one brand, so "my" store having 19 from 6 brands is luxury, it seems. I miss Fry's). Picked up an EVGA GT 850w 80+ Gold with auto Eco Mode and a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Halo, which was extremely lucky as it was the only one in the store.
That out of the way, the build can continue.
Tumblr media
Coming along nicely. Sorry about the quality of some of these pics btw, I'm getting old so the eyes ain't what they were plus I had been dealing with this for several hours by now so I was also cranky and kinda rushing through the pics part. They looked good on the phone, less so once I moved them to the PC, heh.
Tumblr media
Oh thank fuck, it posts. Ignore the slightly dirty desk, I been busy damn it.
Tumblr media
That's looking clean as fuck. Yeah that old USB IO thing is old and kinda looks stupid but like, never can have enough ports, right?
Tumblr media
I really do like this Fractal Meshify 2 case. It's laid out super well and is a breeze to build in. I mean just look at that cable routing, yo. And I was kinda rushing and not really being that finicky about it lol.
Tumblr media
And it's home. Yeah, yeah, I know I need to clean up the cable situation on the left, there. I'll get to it. Also yes, there's some rust on that standing desk pole. I got it for free and it had been sitting outside. I've meant to clean that up but just haven't gotten to it, heh. Living in an RV as a not small dude (6ft1 240lbs or so) makes doing things like this just kinda suck, honestly. Add another person to the mix and yeah things can get tight. A 28ftx8ft box to live in just ain't the best time in the world, lol. We make do, though.
Tumblr media
Finally, I figure I can give one nod to the RGB fans, so here you go. The Halo's fan in all its glory. I have since installed OpenRGB and managed, even on Linux, to gain access to the RGB controller and set the brightness to minimum.
I have run some benchmarks with Phoronix. I guess at least one person who might read this may be interested, especially Linux fans? So here's links to those:
GLmark2
Unigine Valley
Blender - this is an all tests, best of 3 run. Took a couple hours, which meant it was a great stress test for the CPU. I had no problems, which is impressive as the CPU sat at what I understand to be the throttle point temp of 95C. Yeah. I'm going to be looking into a better cooling solution or at least add another fan to the heat sink and see if that helps.
There's also 3 tests from when I was running the i5-6400 with the RX 6800.... if you wanna see what happens to a GPU when you severely bottleneck it, lol. If anyone actually reading this is interested you can just click "System Logs" on any of the links above, then "Show System Information" which will take you to a list of all benchmarks I've done so far.
Well, I guess that's it. Hope this was interesting and/or amusing to whoever reads this. Thanks for taking the time.
Edit*******
Oh and by the way, I launched WoW again after I finished, despite it being late and I was sore and tired. But I just had to see. I am now unable to get less than 35-40fps in Valdrakken, and I'm averaging nearly 100 anywhere else. I actually saw 130fps a few times. I'm not sure I've ever seen that high a number even when I flew as high as is allowed and looked straight up, lol.
In other words: yes, it was worth it. Especially if I can manage to baby this thing well enough it lasts me at least a few years before I "have" to think about upgrading it. Again.

What I'm Watching, Fall 2023 Anime Season
New Stuff:
16bit Sensation: Another Layer - I hate making galge in the current industry, so I got sent back in time to the 90s to make galge then. Wacky concept, let's see where they go with this.
Boukensha ni Naritai to Miyako ni Deteitta Musume ga S-Rank ni Natteta (My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer) - An overpowered fantasy character series, but this time it's heartwarming fun.
Boushoku no Berserk (Berserk of Gluttony) - If Eminence wasn't getting its second season right now, this would be my pick for edgy trash of the season. As it is, I'll enjoy some bottom of the barrel sludge with an overpowered edgy MC and no subtlety.
Bullbuster - Provisionally watchable. You take what you can get with mecha sometimes. This one is about fighting ugly cg giant beasts but also deployment was delayed until liability coverage was confirmed, and further by the broken printer.
Hametsu no Oukoku (The Kingdoms of Ruin) - I'm concerned this will turn into a lot of indulging in violence against women as shock material, but continuing with it for now since the setting raises some potentially interesting questions.
Hoshikuzu Telepath (Stardust Telepath) - Cute girls doing (psychic) friendship things? It's probably nothing, but I'll give it a try.
Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo (The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You) - Now this is garbage! After a double meet cute comes a double confession and double acceptance of same. A shenanigans-type romcom where a poly harem end is supernaturally enforced, and I am here for it.
Konyaku Haki sareta Reijou wo Hirotta Ore ga, Ikenai Koto wo Oshiekomu (I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness) - Not that kind of naughtiness! No ecchi tag! Kinda looking like a nothing show, but I'll give it some more time.
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) - This one is starting late, so actually a placeholder for if I get to it later.
Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Idoman to su (Shangri-La Frontier: Crappy Game Hunter Challenges God-Tier Game) - Another full-dive MMO game, but this time it's about a dude who is just having fun being a minmaxer and speedrunner. No angst, just a side of very light romance. Imagine a show about games also being about having fun!
Sousou no Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End) - This one got started fast, so I'm already several episodes deep. Tagged in advance as the likely show of the season, it's a slow and thoughtful show about a near-eternal elf mage learning to understand the fleeting humans in her life. Very much a "vibes" show.
Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari: Dantoudai kara Hajimaru, Hime no Tensei Gyakuten Story (Tearmoon Empire) - We Have Marie Antoinette At Home gets to re-do her life after getting the guillotine. I'll go with it for now, why not.
Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki (A Playthrough of a Certain Dude's VRMMO Life) - Did this trick me into watching a cooking show? Maybe. It's fine I guess.
Undead Unluck - This is excellent. So much fun. David Production was the right studio for an anime where a character climbs buildings by severing his own limbs and use the force of them growing back for propulsion.
Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou. (I'm in Love with the Villainess) - Yuri Villainess? Sure I'll take it. Looks fun.
Sequels
Dead Mount Death Play Part 2 - More of the excellent edgy reverse isekai from earlier this year.
Dr. Stone: New World Part 2 - New World part one shaped up in the second half, so here's hoping they keep that momentum.
Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! 2nd Season (The Eminence in Shadow Season 2) - Yessss. Eminence was the highlight of the excellent Fall 2022 season and I am super ready for more.
Spy x Family Season 2 - Oh boy, time for more Anya antics!
Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 3 - More horse girls? Don't mind if I do!
Ongoing
Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan (2023) - It's Rurouni Kenshin again. Actually nevermind, I'm just not going to continue with this.
Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru made ni Shitai 100 no Koto (Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead) - This one is mostly done, just keeping track since it ran over a season.
Hall of shame (Shows I dropped after just one episode):
Dekoboko Majo no Oyako Jijou (The Family Circumstances of the Irregular Witch) - Meme about weird that it happened twice for adopting a daughter you found in the woods. This one is about a 200 year old loli and her 16 year old daughter with giant anime tiddy. Pass.
Hikikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon (The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess) - Dog Days meets Liar Liar? I liked those things, but together, nah.
Bokura no Ameiro Protocol (Protocol: Rain) - Didn't even get through the first episode of this one. Painfully ugly and awkward. If you're going to make a show about a fake esport, make the fake game look good and make the players not play it like shit.
Keikenzumi na Kimi to, Keiken Zero na Ore ga, Otsukiai suru Hanashi. (Our Dating Story: The Experienced You and The Inexperienced Me) - Again dropped halfway through the first episode. Just such a drag. Not worth it for the trash.

Holiday Pickups 2022
Happy New Year!
A little late, but thought I’d share some pickups from right before Christmas to now.
Tumblr media
I’m very lucky to be a mod of a great writing community on discord and this is the second year that we’ve engaged in Secret Santa across the server. @grimbims, who was my Secret Santa, sent me Hades on the Switch! I was also delighted to discover that the physical copy of the game comes with a code for the soundtrack, as well as a small artbook featuring all of the game’s characters. It’s also my first roguelike (again, recalling that whole “broadening your gaming horizon” thing), and while Hades is difficult for my novice skills, it’s a terrible amount of fun. I’m not too bad at it, either. I favor the spear coupled with blessings from Artemis and have made it just past Asterius on Elysium, but that battle of attrition always leaves me struggling to survive afterward.
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is the other game I’m shuffling between right now. I had asked for XC3, but there was a mixup during my gifter’s order and I ended up with this one instead, which may secretly have been what I actually wanted. I know that XC3 is supposed to be amazing, but I like to get the whole story, even if the internet tells me that I don’t need to play 1 and 2 before diving in. I’m about twenty hours deep so far and can confidently say that I’m going to play it to the end. The world and premise are interesting, the characters and story are compelling, even if the dialogue is a bit painful at times (my writer's brain can be overly critical even at the best of times), and the gameplay loop is satisfying. It feels very MMO to me. As an avid FFXIV player, that’s only a good thing.
I was excited for Harvestella the moment it debuted on the Nintendo Direct back in June of ‘22 (oh my gosh, is that really “back in” already???). Even though I’ve only dabbled in a handful of farming/life simulators, I’ve obsessed over the ones that I have played (minus Stardew Valley - I know, I’m awful, but it just never grabbed me like it did others. Conan Exiles, though? I lost days to that game.) The anime aesthetic coupled with farming and crafting in Harvestella spoke to me like a game hasn’t in a long, long time, and I knew I needed it as soon as it launched. This was later confirmed when I blasted through the Switch demo shortly after. As excited as I was, though, I’ve decided to set this one aside until I finish the first Xenoblade. Then I’ll discover what was really going on with those Seaslights.
I played Fire Emblem: Three Houses for the first time just a couple months ago. The two weeks I poured into it were gone all too quickly, and while I told myself and friends that I wanted to do a replay for the other endings and storylines, I just couldn’t bring myself to betray Edelgard. After 70+ hours together, her character meant too much to me. Color me excited when I realized that Fire Emblem: Three Hopes was another story featuring those characters, but in the style of the Dynasty Warriors games. (Note: to be honest, I’m not sure what the deal is with the story, but I’m excited to find out!) So once I get to this one, I’m sure it’s going to be another non-stop ride.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not gifts per se, but I did pick up a Byleth amiibo with some Christmas Cash, as well as a copy of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright for the 3DS from the local used game shop. I wanted to get a copy of an FE Fates game so I could download the third not-so-secret storyline to that series, Fire Emblem Fates: Revelations. If you didn’t know, the online shop for the 3DS (and the Wii U, I believe) are being shut down in March of 2023. Apart from purchases made before that date, nothing will be available on those marketplaces to buy or download. Part of a string of odd choices made by Nintendo, recently.

I’ve been eyeing these books since the newest printing was announced sometime last year. Both volumes of the Encyclopaedia Eorzea are gazetteers of the world of FFXIV, and feature stunning art taken from the game. They’re filled to the brim with world lore, and remind me more of a D&D campaign guide than anything else. I have half a mind to use them to run a game set in Eorzea using these books as source material. Maybe then I can get my group to join me in the MMO.

This mug is from Etsy and brings me immeasurable joy. It features a memed version of Gaius van Baelsar’s famous line from the end of FFXIV: A Realm Reborn and makes me cackle every time I read it. I actually received two of these in duplicate, a 16oz and a 12 oz. The larger has worked its way into my mug rotation (because we all have a thousand mugs at this point, right?), and the smaller has earned its place among my small-yet-growing FFXIV collection next to my handcrafted moogle (a birthday present from my sister). From his perch, Gaius will always be there to remind me to drink more coffee.

Probably the coolest gift I received this year was an ocarina from the Nintendo 64 classic, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. I’m not sure if the picture does it justice, but the craftsmanship is stunning. The blue gloss is deep and shines wonderfully under light. It fits perfectly on the shelf with my other Zelda mementos. The box came with sheet music for several melodies from the game, so I’m definitely going to try and learn a couple tunes. Physical items from games like this are the best. I’ll admit, I have a soft spot for action figures, but having something tangible from a game world you’ve invested hours into is so, so cool.

The final, and arguably largest, pickup for this update is a Nintendo Wii that I was able to find locally on CraigsList for a fantastic price! I didn’t have a Wii when I was younger (well, I did briefly… but that story might be for another time) and I’ve had one on my list for a while. Everything works, minus some battery acid damage on one of the Wii remotes, but I’m going to invest some time into repairing that soon.
The seller lived about an hour away, so we met halfway at another used game shop that I hadn’t been to before. After the transaction, I popped inside to grab a couple games as well, including Nights: Journey of Dreams and SSX Blur. I read the Nights comics when I was kid, which were Sega and Archie Comics attempting to see if the series could survive the market. They didn’t, unfortunately, but they were a major influencer in my perhaps misguided desire to become a writer, so I’ve always wanted to try the games. As for SSX, Blur is the only one I haven’t played in the series. SSX Tricky on the GameCube was a gaming staple when I was a kid, so I couldn’t pass this one up when I found it.
All in all, exciting additions to the collection with a lot of games to enjoy.

DD/PM'S PLAYLIST OF VOCALOID SONGS ! (2023) PART 2
Tumblr media
Hi!
Let's get to business, my last post got so big tumblr wouldn't allow me to post as one big gigantic thing, but nothing will stop me from getting people to listen to my funky robots!!
In this part we will go over GENERAL BANGERS & WEIRD SONGS I LIKE! Reminder, this is a continuation to this post!
They are also separated by language and grouped by producers (and credited, hopefully all correctly) but there is no general order to them - important noting here as well that some of the producers might nowadays not be the best people around, but I didn't take that into account.
Please enjoy this!! I put a lot of effort, so I'd love to see any opinions or additions!
More under the cut!
