Thanks to Sean Moncrieff on Newstalk FM for interviewing me today about Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, sometimes also called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Among other things, it was mentioned some cases of Long Covid appear to be like ME/CFS A link to a recording of this segment can be seen here https://www.newstalk.com/podcasts/highlights-from-moncrieff/chronic-fatigue
A lot of good comments were read out later in the show, including just after the break. In total, they probably took up as long as my interview itself. One can hear them by going to February 4 at https://www.newstalk.com/listen-back
Comment: In my discussions with the producer, I used ME and I'm not sure I use CFS at all. But Sean said at one stage later in the show that he wasn't even try to pronounce Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, so that might have been why they have focused on "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" when plugging the interview. I have asked them to change the website heading to either "Myalgic Encephalomyelitis" or "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome"

GOOD TO KNOW THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE COMING TO REASONING THAT THEY ARE NOT TO BE JURORS, UNLESS CALLED ON DUTY BY A COURT OF LAW .
“Michael Jackson songs are starting to seep back on to New Zealand airwaves, after some stations made the call to drop them earlier this year.
In March, the singer's music was scrapped from New Zealand radio stations after ‘LN’, an explosive documentary by filmmaker Dan Reed, focusing on claims by two men who were close to Jackson as children and claim the singer molested them for years.
At the time, MediaWorks Group Content Director Leon Wratt said the decision to not play Jackson's music primarily affected The Breeze and More FM, but also extended to the network's wider brands.
"We [MediaWorks] aren't deciding whether Michael Jackson is guilty of paedophilia, we're just making sure our radio stations are going to play the music people want to hear," he said.”
He added: "The audience has always been pretty split over Michael [Jackson],"  before stressing that audience trends guided the stations' playlists.
A representative for NZME echoed Wratt's statement in March, saying "NZME station playlists change from week to week, and right now Michael Jackson does not feature on them".
NZME brands include ZM, The Hits, Flava, Coast, and Newstalk ZB, among others.  However, in recent months, MediaWorks' The Breeze and NZME's Coast radio stations were playing some of Jackson's music again.
A MediaWorks spokesperson said station playlists were the results of regular listener testing. "The songs that feature on air are a reflection of audience response," she said.
"In the last couple of months, The Breeze has seen positive listener survey results for some of his songs and, as a result, those songs have been added to the playlist on low rotation."
NZME entertainment group director Dean Buchanan said songs by Michael Jackson had always been included in the bank of songs available to programmers on some ZZME radio stations.
"Currently we have a small selection of Michael Jackson songs playing on Coast," he said. "Our audiences are constantly front of mind when we decide what makes the airwaves, regardless of if it's a song, commercial or an interview. Because of this, NZME radio network's playlists evolve from week to week based on popularity, relevance and to ensure variety for our listeners."
PS. GOOD!!! Because he WAS already JUDGED by 12 jurors, in a Court of Law, as NOT GUILT on 14 charges !

Anthem tunes in: Today FM
The hotly anticipated new media station Today FM kicked off last week, with an impressive line-up of established radio hosts and formidable journalists at the helm. The show promised to deliver ‘news that moves us forward’ - and was not short of those sporting bold views and a willingness to ask decision makers the hard questions.
The Anthem team tuned in on the station’s six shows and have shared our thoughts on the week that was including what to expect moving forward from New Zealand’s newest radio programme.
Tumblr media
First Light With Rachel Smalley 5am – 6:30am
After a four-year break from broadcasting, ex Newstalk ZB early morning host Rachel Smalley is back in the hot seat to host Today FM’s opening show, First Light. Despite admitting ‘a few teething problems’ on its first show, Smalley kicked things off with the morning’s top headlines, and positioned the show for a successful launch.
In the first edition of her segment called On the Land, Smalley promised a regular focus on New Zealand’s role as primary producers and delved into the urban-rural divide. Saying her return to radio couldn’t have come at a better time, we expect Smalley to quickly find her groove - making her show a must-listen for early-birds wanting a head start on news for their day.
Tumblr media
TOVA With Tova O'Brien, Mark Dye & Carly Flynn 6:30am – 9am
Following a high-profile end to her 14-year stint at Newshub, Tova O’Brien has swapped TV cameras for a radio mic to front Today FM’s Breakfast show along with co-hosts Mark Dye and Carly Flynn.
The move signals a new era in radio for O’Brien as she builds on her bullish political reporting persona to become one of the platform’s most formidable media commentators. We are already seeing her distinguish herself on the airwaves, with her admired grilling of politicians and bold views on current affairs peppered with a softer side as quizmaster. The show’s giveaways and fun shake up the seriousness we usually associate with O’Brien - but there is certainly ample content in this domain. Already attracting headlines with a plethora of high-profile interviewees including Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Opposition Leader Christopher Luxon, an abrupt end to an interview with former NZ First leader Winston Peters took the cake when Peters ended the call after being questioned about his running in the Tauranga by-election - a topic O’Brien’s producer assured wouldn’t be discussed – to which he later complained on Twitter.
Avid radio listeners will no doubt be watching to see how O’Brien stacks up against her staunch NZME competitor, Newstalk ZB’s morning host Mike Hosking.
Tumblr media
Duncan Garner Today With Duncan Garner 9am – 12pm
After his surprise departure from the multi-platform AM Show mid last year, Duncan Garner trades his antisocial morning TV hours for a cruisier 9am – 12pm morning slot, and this time he’s got the microphone to himself. On his first show Duncan interviewed Finance Minister Grant Robertson who admitted some Kiwi families are in a cost-of-living crisis, confirming the government and Reserve Bank are taking steps to relieve their hardship.
If his first show is anything to go by, Garner’s slot promises to seek a different perspective, looking out for the people impacted most and getting to the root of societal issues.
We look forward to seeing how the former Canon Media Awards Opinion Writer of the Year will differentiate his show from other talkback shows in the market.
Tumblr media
Leah and Mark With Leah Panapa and Mark Richardson 12pm – 4pm
Perhaps one of the more controversial of the bunch, former AM Show sports presenter Mark Richardson is taking on the 12pm – 4pm show with his laid-back side-kick Leah Panapa. She is one of few hosts from Today FM’s predecessor Magic Talk, where she gained attention for her expertly handled take over from Peter Williams.
In this show’s first week we can already sense the chemistry between the two good friends. You can expect the afternoon show to be light-hearted entertainment for Kiwis who love these familiar broadcast personalities.
Tumblr media
Lloyd Burr Live With Lloyd Burr and Wilhelmina Shrimpton 4pm - 7pm
Preserving his position as drive-time show host, former Magic Talker Lloyd Burr has transitioned to Today FM alongside former Newshub Late presenter Wilhelmina Shrimpton. In the 4pm – 7pm slot, they wrap up the day’s news and current affairs, and aren’t afraid of a good debate with Burr urging Kiwis with differing views to call in.
While we’ve so far heard Burr discuss his thoughts on dog homophobia in between opinions on the war in Ukraine, we expect him to lean on his political reporting experience with bold views on public policy and recapping the latest developments from the Beehive.
Don’t miss the Monday night podcast side- project by Shrimpton, “The Core”, which as the name suggested promises to “speak to more people, on both sides of the fence, and take a true journalistic approach to revealing the core of what matters to New Zealanders”.
Tumblr media
POLLY With Polly Gillespie 8pm – 12am
A stalwart of the New Zealand radio scene, Polly Gillespie joins Today FM for the night show where she’s set to guide Kiwis through their challenges, successes, and secrets in what’s promised to be a “talk station not a talkback session”.
Today FM Hopes Tova and Talent Win Through | Newsroom
Kicking off her show this week Polly appeared relatable to many a Kiwi right now, stepping listeners through her experience with COVID-19 and her new daily routine. Don’t miss her new podcast Polly with Prisoners featuring frank conversations with New Zealand inmates about life behind bars – Anthem’s quirky pick to tune in to.
So, how did Today FM fare in its flurry of first-day reviews? While Stuff felt the show may have tried to cover too much ground, The Spinoff described the show’s first day as, “an energetic mix of news, wit and perplexing talkback callers”. The common thread emerged that there were a few technical wrinkles needing ironing out, but once the team settles in we can expect them to deliver on hard-hitting journalism and talkback chat.
Overall, Today FM has attracted some of New Zealand’s most experienced and respected journalists to its station in the hopes of challenging the ever-dominant broadcast power of rival Newstalk ZB. Rounding out their first week on air – we felt there was a great balance of energy, fun and seriousness. The show certainly kept listeners waiting and wanting more - we expect the talented line up to find their groove quickly and we’ll continue listening to hear how they deliver on their vision of delivering news with a progressive mindset.

Audio
Hailing from Dublin and fronted by vocalist and guitarist Keeley, the band includes Marty Canavan on keyboards, Martin Fagan on bass and Pete Duff on drums.
This four-track collection was produced and engineered by Alan Maguire, who mixed it together with Keeley, and mastered by Anthony Chapman (Franz Ferdinand, DEVO, Cathal Coughlan, Jesus Jones, Wolfhounds).
Lead track 'The Glitter and the Glue' is a blistering buffet of psychedelic rock, post-punk and the fuzzier, more frantic end of the dreampop spectrum. The shortest, fastest and most ecstatic explosion of energy released by Keeley to date, this is a hook-laden, melodic monster of a song with very unusual lyrical content. It is already receiving Irish airplay from Newstalk FM, Radio Nova, 98FM and has now been added to the playlists of Dublin City FM, KCLR 96FM and 8Radio.
The 'Brave Warrior' EP demonstrates the multi-faceted songwriting smarts of one of Ireland’s most talked-about emerging bands, ranging from this upbeat lead track to more spacey, darkly-dreamy electronic offerings, drenched in drama and soaked in sadness. Keeley pursues an unusual conceptual thread, conceived several years ago, focusing on German tourist Inga Maria Hauser, whose murder in Northern Ireland in 1988 remains unsolved.
Tumblr media
For the past five years, the band's frontwoman and songwriter Keeley has been publishing a blog with a devoted global following - 'The Keeley Chronicles' - documenting the many facets of this unique, harrowing and mystifying case, correcting the falsely published details of Inga’s life and piecing together what really happened in the final days on her trip. By working in close quarters with Northern Irish police, senior politicians and Inga’s legal representatives in Northern Ireland in concerted efforts to advance and resolve this notorious case, she is keeping the memory of this beautiful and mysterious soul alive.
"Inga is the subject of everything I write. From the moment I first read about her exactly five years ago now, her cause became a burning obsession for me. Since that day I haven’t written a song about anyone or anything else...  I consider myself a concept artist and my purpose is to give Inga a voice," says Keeley.
In October 2020, Keeley released the debut single 'Last Words’, topping Newstalk FM’s airplay chart, getting playlisted by RTE Radio 1 and 8Radio, and attracting support from radio in multiple countries. Picked by legendary broadcaster Tom Dunne as one of his ‘Top Tracks of 2020’, it was listed at #12 in Radio Nova's ’Top 15 Irish Songs of 2020’ and, upon its release, she became the subject of full-page articles in the Belfast Telegraph and Derry Post newspapers, a frankly unheard-of feat for an indie artist on their debut single.

Dimple Discs is a new Peckham label with deep Irish music connections, founded in 2018 by Damian O'Neill of The Undertones and Brian O'Neill, initially as a vehicle for Damian's solo projects. It has now grown to encompass such artists as The Undertones, Cathal Coughlan, Kev Hopper, Eileen Gogan, Dragon Welding, Nick Haeffner and Baby Shakes with forthcoming archive material from Microdisney and Fatima Mansions.
