as much as i love newt being protective over hermann and fighting back to whoever is ableist towards him, and then hermann just scolding newt and being resigned and defeated but newt still stands his ground. i want some hermann protecting newt. idc if its some ableist shit abt whatever mental illness you headcanon newt to have, or newt saying the wrong thing to the wrong person, i want hermann physically fighting back, all of his logic and calculation and his usual assessment of the situation, his ‘think before you act’ mindset is completely out of the equation

[ID: three doodles of Newt and Hermann from Pacific Rim. The first shows them texting eachother, both smiling down at their phones. Newts text reads: “dude” with two hearts and Hermanns text reads: “beloves associate”, also with two hearts. 

The second shows Newt excitely bouncing up and down, his hands clasped overs his sternum, repeating “new kaiju for the lab” over and over. a speech bubble next to him informs that “Dr. Geiszler, the new kaiju remains have arrived.” the speechbubble continues: “and Dr. Gottlieb, the chalk you ordered is here.” Hermann is wearing a neutral expression at this, but a transparent version of him visible behind him is having his arms raised in the air, holding his cane and saying: “WOOOHOOO Yes! FINALLY”. 

The last doodle is of them sharing a pretzel, newt having bitten straight into the thick part of the pretzel while hermann has removed the thinner arms of the pretzel. Newt says: “Dude you are eating it wrong” to which Hermann replies: “I am doing no suchh thing, you are the one in the wrong” End ID]

Part 1: Abyssal Plain

Chapter 1: After the End

Chapter Summary: Two genius scientists, Newton and Hermann, had put aside a fierce rivalry to save the world from the Kaiju. Together they had Drifted — melding their minds — and discovered their hidden feelings for each other in the process. A drunken kiss doesn't prove to be the answer to their confusion though, and neither man emerged from the Drift as unscathed as they would appear.

Excerpt:

Newt picked up the napkin, holding it between himself and Hermann, and looked between his friend and the design — a chaotic, explosive arrangement of orbiting lines and dots — in consideration. “Y’know… I think this’d actually make a really sick tat for you, dude!”

Hermann responded with a double take. “That’s ridiculous,” he protested at once, swaying into the word and snatching the napkin back. “Even if I wanted to, it’s certainly not as if I have the body for it…”

“What?” cried the biologist, louder than intended. “Sorry,” he added quickly when Hermann winced, “but you gotta be - hic - y’gotta be grillin’ my cheese with that shit. Like, would you tell someone they don’t have the right body for ink?”

Hermann hunched his shoulders.

“O-of course not,” he huffed. “I just mean… I’m not… terribly confident in my appearance… I suppose…”

“Hey. Self-confidence? That’s a good reason to get inked,” Newt declared. “Take it from me… it can really make a difference.”

The quiet admission made Hermann lift his head, his gaze sweeping the smaller man up and down in consideration.

“Oh… then, thank you for the advice."

Finding his smile close at hand, Hermann bumped up against Newton’s shoulder, as he’d done when they were celebrating after destroying the Breach. Affection swelled in Newton’s chest, and just like back then, he threw his arm around his friend’s shoulders, squeezing his companion with a fond little shake.

“Any time,” he grinned.

Drunk on love and liquor, they turned towards each other, and their hazy eyes commingled. The erhu sang nearby, bar patrons laughed and chattered around them, glasses clinked together a few tables down — “Yam bui!” — but all seemed to fade away, leaving the two of them the only people in the world in a perfect moment.

Could he really…?

It was Hermann’s big, pretty brown eyes (like honey, in this light) and tender, amorous expression that finally imbued Newt with enough courage to push forward. Would there ever be a better opportunity?
