All I'm saying is, 5 games better be the fucking standard going forward for crosschecks that have any head contact

actually holy fuck?? seeing on twitter that say chucky’s injury is a broken sternum and that’s absolutely insane if he was playing through that bc i reckon this is the exact same injury that took girard out of last year’s playoffs and girard missed like two rounds

1) favorite sid memory
2) What rule change would in NHL?
3) Favorite off season activity
like a memory I personally have? that'll be my magnum opus, which was: refusing to make eye contact with him the one time I met him because I was so fucking scared lol. I don't fault myself a bit but good lord my timbers were shivered. a close second up was his "fuck you I'll do it myself" performance in Chicago wherein he got a goal and three assists to GUARANTEE we won Geno's 1000th game. if we're talking about just "something he's done" well in that case it will have to be the time he tried to feed and pet a deer in Banff when the team did their little teambuilding mid-season retreat there, which I've decided is the reason the Pens absolutely curbstomped every other team on that roadtrip.
I'd make it illegal for Sidney Crosby to cut his hair short. Everyone clap. (honestly I'd make it a no-second-chances rule for head contact. immediately game misconduct, automatic hearing with the DOPS, mandated loss of salary, something like that. doesn't matter if it's accidental or not. you bash someone's head, you're punished for it.)
not to be an ultimate betrayer of my fellow hockeyers but I fucking love the offseason lol I LOVE SUMMER. I LIKE BEING OUTSIDE. I LIKE GOING TO STREE FAIRS AND ART FESTIVALS AND CONCERTS AND PARKS AND RIVERS AND TRAILS. it really helps distract me from the no-hockey (and I think having a little hockey detox every year is very good and lets me refocus on doing other stuff for a while, which is soooo nice). anyways my favorite summer activity is Leave My House <3

when the poll ends do you mind sharing what you vs your friend thought the key hockey concept was? I'm so curious !
yes !! so skill play ended up winning, but if you combine the two categories of fighting and physical play, they add up to way more. this came up because i'm currently going through a whole emotional journey around violence in sport and the way personal choice, bodily autonomy, and the monolith of sports culture can overlap and conflict. that's not super important but i think more people should think about it because it's a really interesting and tough topic. anyway, i was talking to my friend from rural BC, and we were talking about violence/physicality as an inherent part of hockey or if there was a way to mitigate dangerous injury while still maintaining the spirit of hockey as a sport.
she was of the opinion that physical play, fighting, all of that were essential to hockey, and there was no way to play the same game without them. i'm still working on what my opinion is, but i'm finding that more and more i come down on the side of, hey, all of these injuries are unnecessary and there's no reason for hockey -- contact sport though it may be -- to be this dangerous and injurious. there's a lot of reasons i feel this way, but one of the biggest ones is that when i think of hockey -- when i think of the most important, joyous, exciting moments in hockey, moments that made me genuinely love this sport and the place it holds in my life -- i think almost entirely about skill play. what makes hockey worth watching for me is the speed, the skill, the insane passes and bad-angle goals. kirill kaprizov sidney crosby trick shot type shit. when those players have room to play, i love this sport like nothing else.
my friend, on the other hand, isn't wrong when she says that overall, the impression people have of hockey tends toward violence. even if they haven't thought about it enough to pass judgment, the vast majority of people think first of checks and fights.
the problem i have is that a lot of times, skill players are stifled by physical play. i like puck possession, but checking turns that into an almost irrelevant part of nhl hockey, and i like when superstars have space to do insane things, but if they're injured half the year because every fourth liner in the league pretty much has free reign to headhunt without the refs blowing the whistle, i don't get to see any of that. it's the same reason i'm annoyed with the way kirill's been treated in the league -- he's a phenomenal player who can do unparalleled things on the ice, but his production has been down because he got injured a couple seasons ago and hasn't had the space (or protection from further injuries, looking at you, dops) to heal it fully and get back to form. in what world is that the best that hockey can be? i'd rather every skill player gets long, obnoxious nhl careers than keep fistfights in a sport that really doesn't need them, but i'm aware i'm in the tiny minority there.

NHL made the right decision with the Rielly suspension. Moral of the story: Don't fucking crosscheck a rookie because you got salty that your team was losing and said rookie did an empty netter slapshot. Now, if only DOPS could have the same fucking energy for repeat offenders.

wow. well. my interest in the rempe-mania has absolutely plummeted. i was like "oh kinda cool" for round about the first two days and then... then i realized he's just going to be, and really already is, another dirty ass player and the Model R^nger if you know what i mean. the first couple fights were kind of cool and all but holy fucking shit if this is exactly the player we do NOT need coming up in the league. i'm all for bringing some of the rough-and-tough (BUT CLEAN) stuff back to hockey but when it's this? when it's coming into the league and basically making your goal hurting players? and getting away with it? it's bullshit. too many players have lost their primes or their ENTIRE FUCKING CAREER to injury especially related to head injuries, which is what rempe is doing. and he fucking knows it. it makes my stomach sick. and probably the worst part about this is the dops will do nothing. just like how they do nothing with wilson or trouba or perry or kane or any of the other repeat offenders. now, you could say rempe isn't a repeat offender yet but come on. if this continues it's going to happen. but it wont matter because the nhl doesn't care. they don't care. it's disgusting.

As someone who has been through hell and back with concussions, watching Cale's hit made me want to vomit. I appreciate how the NHL handles concussion protocol as far as taking him out for 5 mins and evaluating him. However, I do feel that if you know a specific hit gave a player a concussion the player should be suspended. If the NHL isn't applying these rules, they serve no purpose.
Agreed. I would fully support the Nhl going to iihf rules regarding head hits. Intentional or not if you hit a guy in the head it’s an automatic suspension. Would be nice if dops actually did what the abbreviation stands for but when you have a former inforcer running it this is what you get I guess.
