Lairre versus the rest
I've been meaning to make this post for a while. Which characters in the Pleasant Green Universe are Lairre? And which are not? Let's mess about and find out. I'm using a pros and cons system here, pros being arguments for the character in question being Lairre, cons being arguments against the character in question being Lairre.
Small disclaimer, I'm writing this at work and only have my brain and the wiki page to rely on. If there's anything I've missed, feel free to reblog and comment! Also, keep in mind this started out as a joke that came forth out of the 'what if all Nicola Walker characters are Lairre' meme! With most of these characters, I'm not too serious, but I still wanted to include them all.
Mrs. Wilson (Fragments)
Pro: Mythos reveals Lairre had innate knowledge of Pleasant Green while not having been involved in the operation (as far as we know). Either her clearance level is high enough, or she's (temporarily) lived there.
Con: Mrs. Wilson is married and has a daughter and a son, the latter of the two being enrolled at the University of Aberdeen. It is unlikely a cover personality would go this deep for this long.
Con: Mrs. Wilson presumably disappeared when all of Pleasant Green did. If not, she is likely the housekeeper Kennedy Fisher mentions in The Haunter of the Dark.
Verdict: it is unlikely that Mrs. Wilson is a cover personality of Lairre's.
Dr. Annika Gruber (The Listener)
Pro: Her work involves memory related tasks, including but not limited to alteration, removal and replacement of existing memories in people - this is always something that is worth noting when it comes to this universe.
Con: She seems to hold down a stable job where she is essential and needed. The impression is that she's been in the job for a longer period of time.
Verdict: while it is up in the air and could hypothetically go both ways, it is unlikely that Dr. Gruber is a cover personality of Lairre's.
Rachel Weir (Bad Memories)
Con: Rachel meets her untimely end at the Blake House, and turns out to be the fifth body found years after the original disappearances.
Verdict: it is not possible that Rachel is a cover personality of Lairre's.
Bisa (Bad Memories)
Con: Bisa is alive and well after having left Blake House, and presumably lived to old age.
Verdict: it is unlikely that Bisa is a cover personality of Lairre's.
Alice Price (Kokomo)
Pro: Alice has a willingness to abandon protocol and bend the rules when she wants so long as it benefits the case. These are traits that Lairre is also prone to.
Con: Has a long history when it comes to police/detective work and now works for the CTU as a negotiator.
Con: Canonically has a father, who we hear her speak to at the start of the episode. Lairre, according to her folklore, came to England without family.
Con: Kokomo as a story seems unconnected/separate from the rest. The would-be lasting impact of the Kokomo virus seems to have had no repercussions or impact on the PGU as a whole.
Verdict: it is unlikely that Alice Price is a cover personality of Lairre's.
Dr. Fallon (Fugue State)
Pro: Mythos reveals Lairre had innate knowledge of Pleasant Green while not having been involved in the operation (as far as we know). Either her clearance level is high enough, or she gained this knowledge under cover.
Con: Johnson is there, who is Lairre's boss. If this was Lairre undercover, he would very likely know.
Con: Dr. Fallon falls into a fugue state and lives on as a non-corporeal consciousness. This was presumably incurable. The episode takes place a year before Mythos does, and thus conflicts with Lairre's personal timeline.
Verdict: it is not possible that Dr. Fallon is a cover personality of Lairre's.
Mary Lairre (Mythos)
Verdict: this is the original deal, what more do you want me to say? She is the nun, the myth, the legend.
Dr. Eleanor Peck (The Lovecraft Investigations / Who is Aldrich Kemp?)
Verdict: it was canonically confirmed in episode 10 of The Haunter of the Dark, after many hints throughout the previous series, that Dr. Eleanor Peck is an alternate personality of Lairre's.
Mrs. Alice Boone (Aldrich Kemp series)
Pro: The top layer of her mind is medieval, a fact that characters like Clara Page put too much emphasis on to be random.
Pro: She seems somewhat indestructible for a mortal woman. She's been injured on several occasions, including getting hit by a car and getting thrown through a shop window on impact. She got off suspiciously well, without lasting injuries.
Con: Mrs. Boone has an extensive history, including having been an Olympic Gold medalist in Seoul in 1988. We don't currently know how far cover personalities or kaleidoscope memories go and how much can be implanted, such as enough knowledge of fencing to win a gold medal in it. This con is tentative.
Con: Mrs. Boone has a long and extensive history with the Themis Group, and Aunt Lilly has a great knowledge of her past. It is doubtful this is false.
Con: Mrs. Boone has listened to and is a fan of The Mystery Machine podcast, something which Dr. Eleanor Peck is heavily involved in. She cannot be in two places at the same time.
Verdict: it is highly unlikely that Mrs. Boone is a cover personality of Lairre's.

Scarlet Witch (2023) #7 preview [source], in stores 8/2
JOURNEY INTO OZ! Wanda swore to help anyone who walked through her door … but what happens when that person is a villain? When Nelson Gruber, aka Bookworm, comes through the Last Door seeking aid to kill wicked witches in a corner of Oklahoma that’s been transformed into the Emerald City, Wanda must choose between honoring her covenant and going against her own principles. Now the Scarlet Witch has attracted the attention of a dangerous new foe: Introducing NICOLA ZOSIMOS, aka HEXFINDER! PLUS: A bonus page written by Jonathan Hickman – WHO ARE THE G.O.D.S.?
I'm very intrigued by the Wicked Witch character here. Her design, and the creatures serving her, are actually fairly accurate to the Frank L. Baum novels, which is refreshing. I'm curious if she will be an actual autonomous character, or if she's just a construct of this illusory Oz world. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if she gets killed off by Hexfinder...

J.T. Walsh Was Hollywood's Ultimate Go-To Villain
By Padraig Cotter
Published Aug 12, 2019
Tumblr media
The late, great J.T. Walsh was one of Hollywood's best villains. Actors try to avoid typecasting in their careers since they want to play different types of characters. Performers such as Meryl Streep or Daniel Day-Lewis managed to mostly avoid this, jumping from different genres and roles with relative ease. Producers like to make safe bets, however, so if an actor does a great job with one type of character, that's what they tend to get offered. Following the success of Die Hard, for instance, Bruce Willis spent around a decade playing blue-collar action heroes, while occasionally branching out to other genres like The Sixth Sense.
The offer of a nice paycheque plays a part too, though certain performers refuse to be defined this way. Alan Rickman also received a breakout role thanks to Die Hard's Hans Gruber, but after playing a couple of villains in movies like Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, he decided to mostly steer clear of bad guy parts later in his career. While J.T. Walsh never became a leading man, he carved a distinct niche for himself playing villainous roles in a number of big movies.
J.T. Walsh's first big break was playing the role of Sgt. Major Dickerson in Good Morning, Vietnam, opposite Robin Williams. Dickerson was a petty, vindictive character and Walsh excelled at making him easy to loathe. He would build up a selection of similar roles in the following years, including a sinister movie executive in The Big Picture and a slimy Alderman in Backdraft.
Tumblr media
He received acclaim for a supporting appearance in A Few Good Men, and his string of villains would continue with thrillers Red Rock West opposite Nicolas Cage and Needful Things, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Walsh would also collaborate with Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) several times, including playing an opportunist politician in Executive Decision and the intense thriller Breakdown. The latter project would give Walsh arguably one of his best parts, as the calculating kidnapper of Russell's wife.
J.T. Walsh also made notable TV appearances, including an episode of The X-Files and a major role in sci-fi series Dark Skies. His final roles saw him share the screen with Samuel L. Jackson in thriller The Negotiator and comedy-drama Pleasantville with Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man). Tragically, the actor died at the age of 54 from a heart attack in 1998, with his final performances dedicated to his memory. Jack Nicholson would also dedicate his Academy Award for As Good As It Gets to Walsh's memory.
J.T. Walsh crafted a career filled with memorable performances and made a big impression with even small roles, such as his appearance in Sling Blade. He was one of Hollywood's great villains, and his presence is still missed.

Why I love it: I cannot believe the level of quality this podcast is given that only two people (Nicola Twilley and Cynthia Gruber) work on it. The level of detail is amazing, and as an avid food lover, this podcast has introduced me to the history and science of the food I love so much.

Day 3, 2022 - Con Air
Con Air - 1997 - Simon West
“Sorry boss, but there's only two men I trust. One of them's me. The other's not you.“ Cameron Poe
Tumblr media
Con Air is a telenovela soaked in testosterone. It’s stupid, melodramatic, and fun.
Nicolas Cage is a sweaty Cameron Poe, a be-mulleted ex-Army Ranger who’s matched against super-villain John Malkovich’s Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom, a pastiche Hannibal Lector, Hans Gruber, and the low drone of a lawn mower. How could this not become a classic?
Tumblr media
Cameron is on a prison transfer flight home and finds himself in the midst of a hijacking. He must use his skills and toughness to stop Cyrus and the other really bad criminals on the plane (including Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo and Steve Buscemi who plays a pastiche of Frankenstein’s monster and Hannibal Lector) from flying to a non-extradition country, so he can get back to his wife Trish and prevent the fall of the nation state or whatever.
From the ground Cameron can only rely on a US Marshall played by John Cusack and a DEA agent played by Colm Meany who are both kind of assholes.
Tumblr media
This movie was directed by Simon West, and I think that makes this movie work for me is its comedic timing and sensibility. Knowing to go the telenovela route is the difference for me between Con Air and its Ratner/Bay competition.
That said, on flight stupid melodrama, warning that moments of racism and sexism are sprinkled in masquerading as character traits.
Con Air: It’s not quite Dynasty darling, but it’s campy fun.

Hand : " The terminal part of the human arm located below the forearm, used for grasping and holding and consisting of the wrist, palm, four fingers, and an opposable thumb ".
My purpose was to not cover the entire subject of hands. I think that the possibilities are way too wide. I was motsly interested on how hands inspire me.
This work could not have been possible without the help, the support and the participation of the following people. Thanks to all of you for your patience, your time and your precious hands . Keep them Safe !

Okay, we've got an update on that Wizard of Oz cover!
Turns out Wanda really is going to Oz-- sort of. #7 marks the return of a bit-part villain called Nelson Gruber, aka Bookworm, who has the power to conjure manifestations of written material-- basically pulling stuff out of books and into reality. Up until now, Bookworm has only appeared in a single issue of Sleepwalker, all the way back in 1991. I appreciate Orlando making the deep cuts.
Our new character, Nicola Zosimos, is an antagonist who goes by the name Hexfinder. Zosimos is an alchemist from a long line of "witch hunters" who aims to destroy Wanda using a weapon called the Philosopher's Staff. I wouldn't be surprised if this staff is related somehow to the anti-magic mineral Wanda has been investigating in the early issues of the series.
I will say that the line about "witch hunters" gave me pause-- the prevailing narratives about witch hunts in American media are just as false and, in many ways, harmful as the prevailing narratives about Romani witches. The persecution of alleged witches had more to do with racism, sexism, and the inherent violence of Christian hegemony than it did actual magic-- and it's still happening today. Fortune-telling and related trades are heavily policed in many regions of the United States, which leads directly to racial profiling against Romani families.
