I completely agree with you on the Nightwing solos. I’m sick of certain writers nerfing Dick in the name of  “nostalgia” when really all it is, is fanservice to a  particular minority of DC consumers who dont venture beyond the DCU/DC cartoons.

I miss the days where villains like Deathstroke would show how brilliant and strategic and epic Nightnight is as both a fighter and a hero. I always loved reading comics where Deathstroke was involved in the plot as either a begrudging ally or the main antagonist because he always pushed Dick. In all aspects.

We didn’t get a bubble headed idiot as we seen in recent solos, we got someone who was challenged mentally, morally, and physically. It made Dick’s character, as well as the plot, interesting and refreshing.

Dick and Slade have always had that certain type of chemistry, that particular brand of respect/hate partnership and rivalry, that made those comics the best and most intense.

I always loved that rough, obsessive, almost dark side of Dick (omg but not in the whole “Ric” way bs) that Slade, and other villains or anti-heroes brought out in Dick.

It brought so much depth and realism to his character, as well as making the goofy, witty and yes, sometimes ridiculously daring side of Dick all that more loveable. Dick is only second to Superman when it comes to being the most approachable and trusting hero. He’s also seen and referred to as Batman’s light. It’s a great character trait for Dick. And I love it.

But making him that goofy hero 24/7 as these Nightwing solos have been doing as of late really devalues that aspect of his character and makes his character boring, ridiculous, and overall cheap.

I just wish the fans and the writers would take Nightwing more seriously these days.

I love including Deathstroke as one of Dick's main re-occurring villains! Because the history between the two is just so amazing and deep and it's criminal not to explore it. Deathstroke being admirable of Dick's skill set, but still hating him is always an interesting idea to me. I don't like it when Deathstroke is portrayed as friendly or willing to team up with Dick. I want straight animosity between the two characters. I again always loved the idea of Dick being more rough around the edges and very stoic. Like a cross between Captain America and Aragorn almost lol TBH, I prefer Dick to be described outside of being the light to batman's darkness. Dick is more than just a batman side character and at this point, his mythos should reflect that. He is charismatic, approachable, and trustworthy. But he is also isn't perfect. He can be mean, overbearing, and selfish at times as well. Goofy and incompetent, he is not. I'm fine with exploring Dick's more laid back non-serious side, but that should only come out when he is just enjoying himself with some friends during a night out or something. Not when he is trying to get rid of a deadly criminal.

I think writers DO take Nightwing seriously, it's just there isn't much to do with Nightwing at the same time. Most stuff created for Nightwing gets given away to other characters. Most of his best personality traits and skillets have already been given to Barbara Gordon and Tim Drake respectively, since the 90s.

I don't think Dick will ever be allowed to truly be different and great until he is away from both Titans and Batfam tbh both those parts of the DC world kind of hold Dick back. He is blending in, instead of standing out with those two groups. I think Dick needs new content to interact with. Remember, it took creating an entirely new property (New Teen Titans) and mantle (Nightwing) for Dick for him to become popular in the first place. It'll probably need to happen again. It took Batman almost 40 years to actually gain traction as a character and even then; it wasn't until after Killing Joke (1988) that Batman became the powerhouse he is today. So Nightwing still has lots of time to play catch up.

Prologue - Part 11

“Well, this was fun, but I ought to get to bed.” The others whined complaints and frustration as Ivan stood up and made for the door. “Sorry.” He shrugged. “But I have to be up early tomorrow. See you guys later.”

“Bye.” “Night night!” Krys and Alex called after him. Sammi watched him leave. They couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off with their best friend. They excused themself and followed him into the hallway, and just as they had suspected, found him leaning against the wall, refreshing a page on his phone over and over.

“Heya.” At the sound of their voice Ivan quickly tried to hide his phone. He smiled sheepishly at them.

“Oh, hey.” He babbled. “I was just – um – checking stuff. I’m off now-“

“So she still hasn’t called?” Ivan fell silent and looked away sullenly.

“… No.” He replied, starting to leave. “But she will.” Sammi gave an anxious sigh.

“Look, I know it isn’t my place to say anything-“

“Then don’t.” Sammi was taken aback by the harshness in his tone, and the cold look he shot back at them before tuning and climbing the stairs. Sammi stood gawking for a moment, and in a low, pained voice said. “… Okay.”

Ivan lay wake for hours, constantly checking his phone for messages, before he finally let himself try to sleep. Even then the fear of missing her, the urge to reach for the phone, kept him awake long past midnight, past when even the cars and creatures of the night had at last fallen silent, and then until sunrise. Only then did he finally give up waiting and let himself drift off…

The usual morning clatter of his housemates was enough to wake Ivan up. He rubbed his eyes drearily and reached out for his phone.

8:23 am

“Shit!” He jumped out of bed and threw on some clothes. He had been putting off talking to his professor about changing course for months, and now that he finally had a meeting he was missing it!

He flew down the stairs and out of the front door, not stopping to return Sammi’s chipper “Morning!” He started up his car and accelerated forward onto the lonely countryside roads.

If I keep up a good speed, maybe there will still be time to talk before the lecture starts, Ivan tried to reassure himself. I’ll have to come up with a good excuse, if I tell her I slept in she’ll think I’m not taking this seriously. As thoughts whirled around his brain, he began to feel the heavy weight of sleep deprivation tugging at his eye lids. The rumble of the car was so comforting, and the seat felt soft and inviting. He felt his head droop, when he was suddenly snapped back to consciousness by the strangest sight…

Prologue - Part 9/10

The four of them settled into a night of card games, friendly chatter and drinks. As birthday surprises go Ivan thought it was pleasant, hanging out with his housemates in a relaxed environment. Clubbing would have been no fun tonight, and simple as it was a games night was captivating enough that he was no longer checking his phone every five minutes.

The evening was not without a little derailing. Krys, a testy but charismatic troublemaker, was evidently getting bored. Several rounds into a game he took a card from his hand and slid it face down onto the table, announcing “Go fish.” This got a few raised eyebrows, and as usual Alex interjected.

“That… That’s not even the right game.” They sighed disparagingly. Krys cocked his head in fake confusion, further irritating Alex.

“Oh.” Krys pouted. “What were we playing again?”

Ivan knew by now that these two just loved to engage in petty arguments, and rather than listen to their pointless row he instead turned to Sammi, who was rolling their eyes at the squabblers.

“So… I talked to my professor about dropping out.” This was a conversation he had had with Sammi many times. As his best friend they were the only one he felt comfortable talking to about such embarrassing and delicate matters. As much as they wanted Ivan to stay Sammi was the one who pushed him to start looking at other options. Upon hearing that he had done so they couldn’t help frowning a little.

“Oh yeah?” They tried to say coolly. “Was she upset?”

“Nah, she was really helpful.” Ivan told them. “I’m going to see her before my lecture tomorrow to discuss my options.”

“Yikes.” Sammi chuckled a little. “Isn’t your lecture at 8am?” Ivan laughed nervously in response.

“Yeah, but it’s the only time we’re both free.” He replied. “And I really, really want to have a plan. As soon as possible. I think my dad’s catching on to the fact that I’m not really… Happy with this course.”

“Oh, he doesn’t know?” Ivan looked away as Sammi spoke, only furthering their concern. “I thought you were going to tell him when he came ‘over today.”

Ivan knotted his hands and gave a curt sigh of frustration. “I was going to… But I didn’t.” He said shortly. The sound of Krys and Alex’s increasingly heated argument filled an awkward pause before Sammi spoke.

“If you’re worried he’ll be ashamed of you, don’t.” They reassured. “I know how much he adores you, he only wants you to be happy.” When Ivan did not respond Sammi reached out and held his fiddling hands in one of their own, causing his fingers to be still. “You deserve to be happy.” Ivan looked at them now, a warm smile on their perfect, rosy cheeks. He smiled back.

“Than-“ Before he could finish talking, Krys lunged at him, giggling madly as he attempted to hide behind Ivan.

“PSYCHOLOGY IS A REAL SCIENCE!!” Alex boomed from barely a metre away. Sammi leapt from their seat, switching instantly into Mum-friend mode.

“Alex! Put DOWN the footstool!!!”

Sammi quickly resolved the conflict by assigning Alex to a less vocal game. Ivan was not 10 minutes into a chess game with them, and while he insensly thought through each and every move, Alex breezed through on either pure talent or dumb luck, and was now playing with the pieces they had already captured. They held a pawn between their thumb and index finger and held it up to eye level.

“Does it ever occur to you that Chess is totally a war strategy game?” They pondered. Ivan didn’t even look up from the board.

“... Can’t say I’ve ever thought of it that way.” He answered honestly.

“It is though!” They flicked the pawn across the table and began arranged other pieces into shapes. “The whole point of it is driving back the other player’s forces and trying to invade their land. It’s all war strategy; being one step ahead of the enemy, being smarter rather than stronger.” Ivan moved his bishop after a long inner debate, only for Alex’s queen to swoop into the gap it left and take his remaining knight. “Each piece has its role, a talent that the others can’t succeed without.” They swallowed the knight in their fist and gave Ivan a sly smile. “And sometimes the only way to survive is to sacrifice others for the greater good.”

At this point Ivan was rather sick of loosing embarrassingly to someone who wasn’t even paying attention to the game. “Wow.” He said with all the sarcasm he could muster. “I’m 14 and this is deep.”

“Shut up and let me be dramatic!”
