#nimona ! from the comic and not the movie
Text
the “comic vs movie” thing with nimona is less “which of these is Better” and more “cool, two cakes!”

my official take on nimona the movie is that you shouldn't go into it expecting it to be the same as the graphic novel. it's a different story, and to me that's okay!
the graphic novel is better at handling the moral greyness of individual characters, with messy and complicated motivations, and an acceptance of ambiguous endings.
the movie is better at telling a short, standalone story of how people are framed as monstrous others by both individuals and institutions for no reason other than the fact that they're different and don't fit the mold.
i love both works for different reasons, and it's a shame to me to pit them against each other. if you've read the comic, check out the movie. if you like the movie, try the comic! they're complementary siblings, and both have value

Bit of a talky one today.
(m!Bal is calling the other Ambrosius 'sir' because he can recognize a trained knight even when he's no longer active, and because calling him by name would feel weird.)

Almost 10 years later and we still FEASTIN.
Tumblr media
I remember when this page dropped on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, and Blackenloin/Goldenheart/Goldheart/w/e shippers all collectively lost our minds. Yes, Ballister and Ambrosius are very shippable from the get-go (their hand placement on p.13, Ambrosius on p.21 to Ballister "Are you trying to make me jealous" and his otherwise flirty dialogue, Ambrosius holding Ballister's hand at the bar on p.102, plus little hints and things by Nate on Nate's tumblr), but p.126 was an outright confirmation that it wasn't just angsty and close platonic stuff (with very clingy Ambrosius) that's fun to ship but not exactly canon in the text itself (like you can read it as "oh these two had something" from the get-go but it's not exactly explicit up until this point, and it's a different experience reading the completed comic all in one go versus reading it page by page over the course of a couple years as pages release). The Director's wording, Ambrosius' little blush. Ahh, these beans.
So excited to see the movieeeee

Just watched Nimona
The fact this movie never got a theater release because of Blue Sky's closure and Disney deciding to nix it once acquired will forever break my heart holy shit.
Like up front it is BEAUTIFULLY animated, the writing is tight as hell, the story is genuinely moving and amazing. By that alone it deserved to be in theaters.
*deep breath*
But BOY HOWDY am I SALTY AS FUCK that a animated movie that is accessible to kids, especially queer kids, got knocked out of the process to reach theaters when
IT JUST CASUALLY HAS A INTERRACIAL GAY COUPLE WITH A (metaphorically) ADOPTED (literally) TRANS CHILD AS THE 3 MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE MOVIE THE FUCKING HELL WE COULD'VE HAD ALL THIS PERFECTLY DONE QUEER MEDIA ON THE BIG SCREEN AS A COHERENT AMAZING STORY FUC-

So people have been drawing the movie/comic versions of the Nimona characters and I didn't want my girl Blitzmeyer to miss out on the fun. I think they would be friends.

Welp, there goes another book-canon thing turned different because of ne/il again. someone asked why it seemed like aziraphale didn't know crowley when they met at eden, and he answered with "what makes you think he didn't know him?" and said he knew him, but didn't know what crowley calls himself then.
I absolutely hate this, after reading your point about how their first meeting at Eden is supposed to be crucial to them being friends despite being at opposite sides. I know he's 1/2 of the author of the book but dear god, he should stop changing things so willy-nilly purely to fanservice his "new" fans. At least he should acknowledge the fact that it's just TV canon so it doesn't ruin the book that he wrote with his friend. This is so infuriating.
UGH it's okay that the show is different from the book, but I hate how he makes all the changes from the book and then says "I've planned it like this all along"????? 30 years ago????? Dude just say that the adaptation is different from the book, or you had a new idea, or you changed your mind?? What's so hard about it?!?! If he did that that instead of insisting everything was planned from the start, we may have a little more respect for him even.

If Ambrosius (movie ver.) lost his hearing in that blast, Ballister would immediately start learning sign language, even with all the beef between them, even after all that happened, even with a prosthetic that would probably make it harder to learn, he'd still do it no questions asked. Change my mind.

another Nimona But Make It SPOP, this time I just wanted to make Ballister a catboy
Tumblr’s read more system on mobile seems to be broken, so I’ll try not to ramble to much. This is basically a Catra and Adora Swap AU — Ambrosius is our “Ra” here. He and Bal were raised in the Horde and he was the golden child, while Ballister was the angsty catboy that tried harder than anyone but was still scapegoated to hell and back. Ambrosius is destined to be “Ra” and finds the sword. Nimona, the same species as Double Trouble, would be more of a cross between Bow and Glimmer and stumbles across Ballister, drilling into him that the Horde is evil.
Bal defects to the rebellion and tries to stop a Horde invasion on a village. Ambrosius tries to stop Bal and Nimona’s evacuation efforts/counter attack and, not used to having a magic sword and magic powers, Things Go Wrong 🗡💪
Nimona’s backstory is still largely untold, but I like the idea of her being reluctant royalty from a kingdom that was destroyed a long, long time ago, with no explanation as to why she’s still alive hundreds of years later. Gloreth is obviously the previous “Ra.” Blitzmeyer is Entrapta, a queen here, and helps Bal with his arm. The Director has to be Shadow Weaver. I’m torn on the Queen — parallel wise she should be Hordak, but her whole thing is breaking away from tradition instead of perpetuating meaningless worship of a long gone individual in a way that denies opportunities to the underserved and curates bigotry. That’s very different from Hordak’s continuing an abusive system before fighting to break away yourself storyline (plus she’s actually royalty, so maybe she’d fit as Angella). (On the other hand, Blitzmeyer/The Queen). IDK or maybe she can be Madam Razz or Lighthope

a crack in the wall
The thing that struck me immediately, like the first time I saw the scene, was the Director saying “...and now, we have a monster in our kingdom.”
Tumblr media
framed like that, holding the sword she stole so she could frame Ballister.
My literal first thought was “yeah, I’m looking at one right fucking now”. Two seconds later she’s using that sword to get rid of a threat to her order, so like yeah.
It’s not subtle cinema language at all, it’s basically shouting it at me, but I liked it anyway. She’s a threat and the movie is no longer remotely hiding it.
