A-T-2 385 Dope Library Music With A Space Theme
Holst's suite The Planets written as what the composer described as "a series of mood pictures" (in a music lesson at school we were told to close our eyes listen to this piece of music and let images appear infant of our eyes) I'd argue it was very influential in the development of space music. Mainstream public interest interest in space travel is believed to have come from a Soviet youth magazine published October 2nd 1951 which outlined how two men might fly to the moon and back, thus kickstarting the Soviet lunar programme. This is published in the US and the space race is born. The Space Shuttle era begins in 1981
John Cage composes Imaginary Landscapes No.1 in 1939. In the 1950s with the onset of the space race there was a boom in space films. The film Forbidden Planet came out in 1956, it's soundtrack was made entirely electronically (reportedly to get out of paying musicians and union rates), this helped solidify a connection between space and synths. Electronic music is considered to be futuristic in nature, and in the 1950s it was (in 2022 watching films set hundreds of years in the future but they're still dancing to 1990s electronic dance music is a bit of a joke.) In 1963 Doctor Who appeared on UK television screens with it's electronic theme music realised by Delia Derbyshire using musique concrète tequniques. Like with the John Cage piece I mentioned the sounds electronics can produce often sound alien, sound can be manipulated way beyond what a musician playing wind, strings, percussion, or a voice can do. In that way these sounds might be considered futuristic or even emanating from outer space. Electronic instruments also seem more scientific, it's often called tech, closer to computer laboratories and rocket controls than pianos, saxophones, drums, or guitars
We tell stories about space. Star Wars ushers in a renaissance of space fiction and it remains popular to this day. Ridley Scott's second space film Bladerunner comes out in 1982, which has one of my favourite soundtracks
Space library records are popular with fans of electronica and they usually have great sleeve artwork. That space library albums have a funky beat makes no sense at all, there's nothing particularly spacey about drum breaks, still I am drawn to them
Gaston Borreani recording under the name Galaxy for De Wolfe
Galaxy - Jupiter
youtube
Again for De Wolfe Unit 9 who did two space titled albums Delta and Over The Moon. Also check Fission Chips from Over The Moon and Omicron (before it was the name of a covid19 variant and we believed in progress and the future, ah! innocent times) from Delta
Unit 9 - Pi
youtube
Earforce Band - Sky Racer brilliant German one off for UBM Records. Bassist Dieter Petereit and drummer Willy Ketzer were both in the fusion band Passport. Space is big enough from harpsichord
youtube
Roger's New Conception - Expectation from the album Infomatic 2000. Roger Roger & Nino Nardini sounding like something from the 1960s or 70s. Sleeve artwork is nicked from the CTI album Moon Germs by Joe Farrell and isn't a million miles away from the sleeve for China Crisis' debut album designed by Peter Saville Associates. Anyway, beats
youtube
Christian Chevalier - Strange Pop from the album Christian Chevalier & Alan Feanch - Space Résonance. Alan Feanch followed up with sister album Flash Résonance: Space Dream
youtube
Miha Kralj - Jupiter from the Yugoslavian state owned record label PGP RTB album Odyssey
youtube
Roland Brocquet - Epsilove another French offering, this one from the album Robot Rose "Claviers Synthétiseur"
youtube
The Astral Dimension - Black Holes from Italy, not to be confused with Astral Sounds. A spooky ambient one this

@deep-space-titst agged me to share 5 songs I've been listening to of late and I can never say no to an opportunity to plug my favorite artists. So heeeeerrrrrreeeee we go.
First up is one of my favorite genres of song writing. Let's call the genre Fuck the Police.
I love SAULT, they have such a unique sound blending funk, jazz, soul, punk, and hip hop. They’re an incredibly tight band and the lyrics are always brilliant. ACAB!!!!!
Next up is song from one of my favorite artists, Mykki Blanco, fresh off their latest album.
I've have been listening to Mykki for a long time now and it's been so cool seeing their music and persona evolve over the years. I've always loved her music but I'm absolutely in love with this current era of Mykki Blanco. Can't wait to see what he does next.
My third song is an oldie but goodie.
This is my current go to track for one of my all time favorite activities: Smoking a fat joint and going for a walkabout in the city while listening to music. 'Nuff said.
At number four we've got one the the latest singles from one of my all time favorite punk bands, HIRS COLLECTIVE.
If you're trans and love punk music you've almost certainly listened to G/L/O/S/S (if you haven't heard of them Slap yourself in the face rn and go listen to 'em). G/L/O/S/S disbanded but HIRS Collective is their spiritual successor; in fact Sadie Switchblade herself has collaborated with HIRS more than a few times. This single is from their upcoming album and I can not fucking wait for the whole album to drop. Every song they've realeased so far has been an absolute banger (I especially love XOXOXOXOXOX featuring one of my other favorite bands, MELT BANANA). They collaborate with a lots of other queer and trans artists including Laura Jane Grace and the collaborations are always super interesting. It goes without saying that trans folks don't have it easy, the world is rather unkind to us; whenever I'm at the end of my rope with the transphobia I have to deal with or when my heart breaks at seeing other trans folks, especially those I know and love, suffering I turn to to HIRS COLLECTIVE because sometimes you need the catharsis of a primal scream set to some blast beats so fierce and heavy they'll blow your tits clean off.
And last but certainly not least is a track from an artist very near and dear to my heart, who has not received the accolades she deserves. I'm kinda always listening to Jordana (FKA 187) and it's hard to choose just one song of hers.
Jordana LeSense is, imho, the greatest drum and bass artist of all time and most people have never heard of her. I believe her immense talent has been overlooked because she's a trans woman. She walked so Juliana Huxtable, SOPHIE, Eris Drew, Octa Octa, Jessica Jess, and Tami T (It's my duty to sneak in some plugs for more trans artists) could run. Jordana use to go by the moniker 187, a name she earned for blowing out her friend's speaker making her hard and heavy beats. Jordana is a true trans legend and a personal hero of mine. Her music definitely speaks to the trans experience. When she was only 13 she began her medical transition in total secrecy, an experience that I am certain informed the song Deep Stealth. She announced her tranistion in 1998, around the time she released her second Album, Quality Rolls. With the release of that album she was set to become an icon of the drum and bass scene. Tragically, while on tour in Ohio in 2000, she was victim of a violent hate crime at the hands of two men, who were never convicted because The Pigs never charged them, and she suffered a traumatic brain injury that caused nerve damage to her face. She stopped making music for a very long time after that.
BUT she's back! No longer going by the 187 moniker Jordana is back and making music. Please go check out her bandcamp, show her some love and buy some music.
Here's her soundcloud
Jordana hasn't released any new albums recently, that I know of anyway, but she still does live performances and if you follow her on IG or twitter she lists her performance dates there and you might be able to catch her!
My greatest wish is for people, trans folks especially, to rediscover Jordana’s music and lavish her with the attention she deserves.
OK I tag my wife @bandyriddles, @dissonant-skies, @basicallymsfrizzle, @zephy-n-ky, and @rynejoslyn

Nino Nardini: “Tropicola” b/w Anthony King: “Filigree Funk”
Released on opposite ends of the decade, were given a second chance thanks to dee-jay and Jazzman, Funk 45, and Stark Reality label-head Gerald Short. Through Jazzman, Short aims to resurface the best in obscure and super-rare jazz numbers overlooked in the late Sixties to early Seventies and then some. Nino Nardini and Anthony King were up for re-release in 2002 for just those reasons. Originally found on the Stringtronics’ Mindbender compilation (1972), Nardini’s “Tropicola” is a leisurely selection that goes low-key with a slightly dark tonality, but uses a wide variety of contrasting elements in violins, drums, triangle, and strings all used sparingly. On the other side is Anthony King’s “Filigree Funk”, found on the Lost Star album (1978) shared with Memo Kurt, is plentiful on the keys and sparkled with vibes and beats throughout. It’s clearly the more charismatic and delightful of the two, and we’ll add both to the list of future jazz / fusion treasure plays on Omega WUSB.

It’s a jungle out there!
Tumblr media
Speaking of obsessions, this is a record that I have been obsessing over for a long time now. Recently, I found a re-issue of Nino Nardini & Roger Roger’s Jungle Obsession LP. I wanted to bad to find an original copy. But, if I had a spare few hundred bucks $$ maybe, I would cave in and sign up to Discogs and get that sorted. But, the thrill of the catch, to find one in a record store somewhere around the globe, that’s an obsession in itself.
Tumblr media
I can’t remember exactly when I first came across this quirky record. But it stood out straight away. In 1971, this record was released. Imagine the world back then for a moment. No internet. You learned about other cultures around the globe through National Geographic magazines or records, like this one. https://www.discogs.com/Nino-Nardini-Jungle-Obssession/release/906395 To be a kid or avid learner and play this record and ponder other bizarre cultures of the world and how they live and sound. This is the record! It’s not an original pressing, but I wasn’t passing the chance to have at least this.
