Ok Jaanu, it's time for you to step back
There's a reason one’s a cult classic and the other is just … there
--A.K--
So you may be asking: It’s been almost a decade since OK Kanmani and OK Jaanu were released, so Aadhi, why are you still beating a dead horse?
To that I reply, I’m not — that would be animal cruelty.
I just happened to stumble across OK Kanmani (after vigorously searching for it for years, of course) about two days ago. I watched it, and guys… my. world. changed. 🤯
WAIT — before you roll your eyes and scroll away, let me give you some background. I was fifteen when OK Jaanu came out, and I went absolutely goo-goo gaa-gaa for it. I mean, why wouldn’t I? It had everything a hormonal teenager could ever want: ARK, rom-com vibes, ARK + Shraddha Kapoor’s sizzling chemistry, and oh yeah—did I mention ARK?
For those who haven’t watched it, OK Jaanu (and OK Kanmani) is about Adi and Tara, two ambitious young professionals who don’t believe in marriage and decide to pursue a casual live-in relationship. Of course, things get complicated when, surprise surprise, love gets involved.
And not gonna lie, I actually liked it. I especially loved the songs, particularly the title track. But then, I saw the comments under the video: scathing. “This is a cheap remake of OK Kanmani!” “Mental Manadhil (the original version of the title track) is wayyy better!”
Me, the ever sceptic, thought, “there’s no way that OK Kanmani is that good”.
Oh boy. was I wrong!
It wasn’t just good, it was straight up A-MA-ZING. If you thought the chemistry between Shraddha and Aditya was good, then the chemistry between Dulquer and Nithya will set you on fire. No, I’m serious—watch it, and you’ll be blushing so hard, you might turn into a tomato.
In this post, I’m going to break down why OK Kanmani >>>>>>> OK Jaanu, why you NEED to watch it, and why Bollywood seriously needs to stop with these remakes before they ruin anything else. So strap in, cuz I’m going to analyze this so hard that it’ll make my AP Lang teacher proud.
There are four main reasons why OK Jaanu fell short:
1. MCs’ depth and their chemistry (or lack thereof)
Adi: Dulquer Salmaan vs. Aditya Roy Kapur
DQ brings a certain charm to Adi. He’s a little cocky, a little childish (like picking fights with Tara toward the end instead of just saying I LOVE YOU …seriously, bruhhh,) with just the perfect amount of adult. He’s responsible as seen by taking care of Bhavani (the old couple's wife) when she wanders off. He also has a clear sense of drive, chasing a gaming career with big future aspirations, and it's not just talk, he has the skills to back it up. He’s the pinnacle of young adults.
Now, Bollywood Adi? Man-child. I’m sorry, I had to say it. Someone online said that Aditya Roy Kapur basically played the same character in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani as he does here, and honestly, I agree. He plays the same carefree, somewhat irresponsible charmer in both films.
And here’s why this is a problem: the story itself is simple—there aren’t any shocking plot twists—but it’s meant to reflect the youth of India (and even first-gen NRIs). It’s about a generation trying to define relationships without the prospect of marriage hanging over their heads like it did for their parents. While the older generation balks at this kind of arrangement, the original film showed Adi and Tara as two capable individuals making their own decisions about their lives. OK Kanmani portrayed their agency; Ok Jaanu made them look childish, reinforcing stereotypes about our generation being a mess instead of challenging them.
Tara: Nithya Menen vs. Shraddha Kapoor
Nithya elevates Tara to live true to her name, giving the character the shine it needed. She is a star — the energy, the spunk, the twinkle in her eyes—it had me reeling. I wanted to be her, even if just 1 percent.
Yet she’s not perfect. She can be childish (like skipping work to go hang out with her boyfriend), but she knows her priorities. She loves architecture, is passionate about it, and is very good at it. She has a genuine passion for her work, going as far as to further her education in it at a prestigious university, instead of going down the path that her mother laid out for her. One of my favorite scenes is when she is confronted by Adi’s sister-in-law and is berated for their live-in relationship and she hits back with a “does a certificate make everything ok?”. It shows that she’s not afraid to fight for her values even if others don’t agree with it. This is the agency of a young adult: navigating life based on our values, on our own terms, and Nithya Menen gives justice to that.
In almost every scene, she stole the show. When you watch this movie, make sure you hold on tight because she will blow you away.
Bollywood Tara? If you thought Aditya Roy Kapur was bad, at least he tried to give some life to his character, the wrong character, but he tried. Shraddha Kapoor on the other hand was at best poor. Her line delivery was so flat. For instance, when she gets the opportunity to work with Balakrishna Dhoshi, her architect guru, you’d expect her to be squealing, jumping with joy, running around with happiness… but nothing. Literally nothing. You could’ve told her it might rain today, and she might have shown more excitement for that. And the scene when she’s confronted by the sister-in-law, the girl was silent. She was being berated and she just took it. When she does show spunk, it’s with Adi; but because she doesn’t embody this energy outside of him, it feels like she’s trying to be someone else.
Another thing I noticed? The eyes. Nithya’s eyes were filled with adoration for Dulquer, like everything he did was magic to her. Shraddha? She stared at Aditya with this weird look that I can only describe as a predator stalking its prey. Even when she kisses him after coming back from Ahmedabad, it’s so aggressive. 😬 Scratch that—every kiss she gives him is so aggressive. **SLAPS HAND ON CHEEK, I’M GOING TO KISS YOU EVEN IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT **….
hello? Is this 911? Yes, I’m calling to report a crime…
2. Watered down Paplu
Ganapathy in OK Kanmani (Paplu in OK Jaanu) is filled with so much depth and love. You can see the tenderness in his eyes when he looks at his wife, Bhavani. Their relationship answers a critical question: What is love? And takes it a step further: is it love even when the person you love doesn’t remember you?
With this relationship, the answer is yes, yes, and 1000 times yes. It reminds us that love can take many forms and that true love often endures beyond the fleeting moments of passion and youth. This is especially important in the end when Tara asks Adi whether he can take care of her if she ends up like Bhavani. His response shows that he doesn’t see her as a fling, he sees her as a lifelong companion.
In contrast, while Naseeruddin Shah is a phenomenal actor, his portrayal in Ok Jaanu lacked the same emotional weight. I believe this isn’t because of his acting, per se, but rather the shallow script — many small but impactful moments from the original were cut altogether.
Here’s a scene that really stuck out to me: when Adi asks Ganapathy how he and Bhavani met. While they’re talking, Bhavani is scooping beans into the bean pod, but Ganapathy sweetly takes it from her hands. He scoops out the beans himself and throws away the pod, and he keeps doing this, no anger, no questions, just a simple, loving act. It’s such a small moment, but it says so much about their bond. It’s love in the tiniest, most mundane acts. The equivalent of the ‘orange peel test’ tiktok trend. This scene didn’t make it into Ok Jaanu, which is such a shame because it perfectly encapsulates how love is often about quiet, unspoken care.
Another moment that stood out to me is when Tara sings for Bhavani, and you can see how Ganapathy begins to soften toward Adi and Tara’s arrangement. While he isn’t fully on board with their decision to live together without getting married, he sees how their presence could benefit Bhavani, that is, how it could give her the companionship she craves but that he can’t always provide. It’s such a subtle shift, but it speaks volumes about how Ganapathy’s disapproval slowly gives way to understanding and even affection.
This emotional arc was largely missing in Ok Jaanu as I feel Paplu was already very ‘forward’ thinking and the dynamic between him and Adi was playful from the beginning.
These small, layered interactions between Ganapathy and the younger couple added so much heart to OK Kanmani. By the end, you feel his approval of Adi and Tara as a deeply-earned moment of acceptance, not just of their relationship, but of the changing values of a new generation.
3. The Missing Third Character: Music + Cinematography
A.R. Rahman’s songs were largely recycled in Ok Jaanu, but they didn’t have the same magic, and after a deeper look, I realized why: the cinematography.
Case in point 1: Mental Manadhil vs. Ok Jaanu
Both songs are great, but Ok Jaanu’s cinematography does it a disservice. Both songs are meant to show the exhilaration of liking someone, and Mental Manadhil captures that. The colors are realistic, not overly saturated, like Ok Jaanu’s. In Mental Manadhil, the visuals move fast, the background blurs, the camera shakes slightly, and there are very few slow pans. That imagery feeds into the exhilaration; you feel the excitement. Unfortunately, Ok Jaanu didn’t have the same effect.
Case in point 2: Parandhu Sella Vaa vs. The Humma Song
Let’s start by saying neither song was necessary for the movie. They didn’t progress the plot or add to the characters, and honestly, they weren’t even that good. (The Humma Song is also an atrocity to mankind 😩, but I don’t have the patience to unpack that right now.) At least Parandhu Sella Vaa showed some development in Adi and Tara’s relationship, like the moment when Tara rests her cheek on Adi’s hand after hesitating just a minute earlier, or when Adi pretends to kiss an imaginary version of her. It shows that their relationship has progressed from flirty friendship to something more. Meanwhile, The Humma Song was just an excuse to show ARK’s abs and Shraddha’s legs. It didn’t feel like a progression in their relationship, it felt like lust.
Case in point 3: Aye Sinamika vs. Enna Sona
Not including Aye Sinamika in OK Jaanu is a crime against humanity, and there is nothing that can convince me otherwise. This is the hill I’ll die on.
I loved both songs, but Aye Sinamika captured something more intimate and real. The Tamil version showed everyday things a couple does—dancing, acting silly, sleeping together (guys, not that kind of sleeping, get your head out of the gutter)—reminding Tara of Adi in every little moment. It’s these seemingly mundane, affectionate moments that make their love story feel genuine and lived-in. Enna Sona tried to achieve this, but it leaned too heavily on showing them kissing every five seconds. Combined with The Humma Song and the overall lack of emotional depth between the leads, it ended up feeling like the lead was missing his partner's body, not her presence. The lyrics add to this as well, Aye Sinamika repeats “Nee enne neegandhe” meaning “Don’t leave me” whereas Enna Sonna repeats how beautiful Tara is. The charm and warmth that Aye Sinamika conveyed through subtle storytelling was overshadowed in Ok Jaanu by its overemphasis on physical intimacy rather than emotional connection.
4. Inorganic Story Flow
The Meet-Cute: Cultural Nuances Matter
The meet-cute in OK Kanmani made sense. Adi yelling Tamil expletives at Tara worked because it’s a moment that reflects their shared culture. As a South Indian, you instantly bond with someone who speaks your language, especially in a diverse city like Mumbai. It’s a special kind of connection.
Now you may be wondering, how could it be surprising to find someone that speaks your language. Well I’ll give you an example.I’m from America, where people don’t usually speak Kannada. My family has gotten so used to this that we talk loudly in Kannada because we don’t expect anyone around us to understand. When we went to Mumbai, we expected the same thing, but my mom practically yelled, “Where are we supposed to go?” to me in Kannada, and a security guard responded in Kannada, offering to help. We were completely shocked! This is what I mean, you just don’t expect others to speak the language so when you do, it's like an instant sense of familiarity.
Getting back to the movie: when Adi and Tara meet, they’re surprised. In a place as diverse as Mumbai, what are the chances that he happened to yell Tamil expletives at a Tamil woman? That’s why they bond—it’s a shared cultural understanding. In a foreign city, it’s comforting to meet someone who shares the same culture.
This doesn’t exist in the Bollywood version. If they were from the same town or state, maybe I could understand the meet-cute. But there’s no mention of that in the Bollywood movie, so the connection just doesn’t make sense.
Emotional Moments: Let the Damn Story Breathe
Another problem with Ok Jaanu is that it doesn’t let the emotions breathe. Take the scene where Tara mentions her father and how he’s no longer part of her life. The Bollywood version immediately moves on to the next scene—Adi and Tara miss their train and get a room together. But that was such a pivotal moment! The story needed to sit with Tara’s feelings for a moment before moving on. Instead, it felt like the movie just wanted to tick off all the plot points before getting back to the romance.
Character moments like these are like vegetables in a meal, you might want to rush through them to get to the “main course,” but the vegetables enhance the overall experience. Ok Jaanu treated these moments like an afterthought.
Fights Are the Answer
SPOILER ALERT, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK
As Adi gets ready to leave for America, you can see in OK Kanmani that he and Tara slowly start picking fights, but they’re not real fights. They’re both frustrated about their promise against marriage and the looming end of their relationship, so they take it out on each other. These fights add so much depth to their dynamic and make Adi’s eventual proposal hit so much harder.
This layer of tension is missing in Ok Jaanu. Without it, the ending doesn’t feel as emotionally satisfying. I think that tension is important because it makes their decision to marry feel genuine, it’s not about societal expectations, it’s about what’s right for them.
Stop with the Remakes
I know I dragged OK Jaanu pretty hard, and I’ll admit, the movie itself isn’t terrible. But, it definitely is not the magic that OK Kanmani is. If OK Kanmani is authentic Chinese food, then Ok Jaanu is Panda Express, good… but for fast food.
Also why was this movie even made? It’s an exact frame-by-frame of OK Kanmani (minus the soul of course). There was no problem with the original that Hindi dubbing or subtitles couldn’t fix. As an audience, we need to stop consuming hollow remakes of already good movies — if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. And Bollywood is notorious for this. Cough Cough I’m looking at you, Laal Singh Chaddha.
Being inspired by a movie is great, but don't reproduce the same movie and slap on two mediocre Bollywood actors and expect us to eat it up.
It’s insulting… We’re smarter than that 🙄.
TL;DR
For those who read (or skimmed) this far, I applaud your commitment 👏👏👏.
Here’s the takeaway: Whether you liked OK Jaanu or didn’t, I promise you’ll love (or at least begrudgingly respect) OK Kanmani. It’s worth it, or your money back.
(No, but if y’all don’t like it, don’t come after me, I’m just a broke movie nerd with opinions 🫠.)
What do YOU think? Drop your hot takes in the comments, retags, or my inbox…I’m ready to fight😤. I’m scared of confrontment.

Review: O Kadhal Kanmani
Originally posted elsewhere on 16th April 2015
Disclaimer: I'm an unqualified reviewer. For a list of people who are qualified to write about OK Kanamani, please consult Suhasini Maniratnam
Despite how old you've gotten watching Mani Ratnam, the excitement of watching his next never diminishes. Especially, when the movie works - part experience and part nostalgia. OK Kanmani is as simple as Mani Ratnam gets and as profound as any of his classic films on love. No non-linear timelines, no metaphors, no value judgements and no message, just a straight love story from the Mani Ratnam we thought we'd lost.
Yes, OK Kanmani is going to be branded by many as an update on 'Alaipayuthe'. While there's superficial merits to parallels, any such comparison is missing a larger point. OK Kanmani is an affirmation that love endures anything, even the age of instant gratification, fleeting relationships and self-centered ambitions. A reassurance that love, like an stubborn virus evolves and trumps even the most testing environments.
Many filmmakers find the divisions in an ever-changing India. Mani Ratnam finds his in the grind between a conservative past and the liberal ideas of the present. O Kadhal Kanmani balances a society that holds its nose to anything unconventional against the attitudes of millennials for whom living together is a convenience and signing up for a commitment is a shallow formality - an after-thought.
Aadi (Dulquer Salman) and Tara (Nithya Menen) rush into an open relationship and a live-in arrangement with no intent of settling down. Her architect scholarship's about to take her to Paris; his gaming-dev skills have currency in the US. Can their casual, time-boxed courtship fall turn into a commitment they both dread and declare taboo? Sounds very time-worn and ripe for sentimental pickings. Mani Ratnam, of course, dresses it up with his unwavering sense of aesthetics and his insane level of insight into the Gen Y's mind.
For multitudes of us, falling in love or cherishing the feeling of love is a brief high, a phase of life that we leave behind, in our rush to get on with the challenges and rigours our life; not for Mani Ratnam. He is that rare director who can lead you back into that corner of your heart that once used to throb with the excitement of living the moments of love. His comfort with dealing a romance can give any young or even semi-seasoned (uh hmm, GVM) director a complex.
Mani Ratnam's been repeating his rule on casting for decades now - "50% of the film is casting". Although, at times we've felt he doesn't follow his own advice. Not with OKK. There are four primary characters and each one of them pivots the story with maturity and confidence. Prakash Raj, Nithya Menen & Dulquer (in that order) light up the screen with such familiarity and freshness, like regular folks plucked from their living rooms, their pajamas still on. Prakash Raj's hamming could have been a major problem 'cause he shoulders a sizable portion of the movie and is the emotional core of OKK. He's in a league of his own here - a completely winsome performer.
Rahman's presence in a Mani Ratnam film cannot be anything along expected lines. As with all Mani Ratnamm movies, none of the songs you've heard going into the movie remain the same (shortened, remixed and reimagined) and there's the on-screen-exclusive thukda songs that are used aplenty here too. Waiting to get my hands on the background classical-funky fusion track (Kalyani's theme), in particular.
As if to mock folks calling out Mani's pattern of using of trains and stations, almost every scene features a loco compartment. The opening scene, staged on the platforms of Mumbai's CS terminus is a kicker, Mani goes one better on his usually impressive starting sequence. Mani and PC Sriram put on a show that reminds us why people still whistle to title cards bearing their names. Same with the rain too - no shying away from them, plenty of emotions drained and drenched under it. The MR-PC combination pulls off magical moments on screen that should lay to rest any claims to "next Mani Ratnam" or "next PC Sriram".
OK Kanmani

"Custody Battle Resolved in Favor of Biological Mother: Petitioner Wins Habeas Corpus Petition"

In a landmark decision, the petitioner secures custody of her three minor children after a heartfelt plea to the High Court.
In Habeas Corpus Writ Petition the petitioner sought custody of her three children from her late husband's step-son and step-daughter-in-law. The High Court, led by Hon'ble Mr. Justice Saurabh Lavania J, ruled in favor of the petitioner, the biological mother, based on several key points:
1. Biological Parent Preference:
The court emphasized that the biological mother is generally best suited to care for her young children unless clear evidence suggests otherwise.
2. Welfare of the Children:
The court prioritized the children's welfare over legal technicalities, stating that the welfare of the children is of paramount importance, referencing cases like Syed Saleemuddin v. Dr. Rukhsana and Ors. and Nithya Anand Raghavan vs. State (NCT of Delhi).
3. Circumstances Post Father's Death:
The petitioner claimed she had no support after her husband's death and was best suited to care for her children, opposing the respondents' claim that she left the children voluntarily.
4. Legal Precedents:
Several Supreme Court judgments reinforced that habeas corpus is a valid remedy in child custody cases to ensure the best interests of the child.
5. Islamic Personal Law Consideration:
The court referenced the case of Sahil and Another vs. State of U.P. and Others, which under Muslim personal law, entitles the mother to custody of minor children unless specific disqualifications apply.
6. Equitable Powers of the Court:
The inherent equitable powers of the court were invoked, underscoring the principle of parens patriae, mandating the court to act as the guardian of minors and ensure their welfare.
The court concluded that the petitioner, as the biological mother, is best suited to care for her children. The minors, who were present in court, were entrusted to her custody. The respondents, however, were given the option to seek visitation rights through appropriate legal channels.

Hey, if you’re in California, a registered Democrat, and want to get this state’s Democratic supermajority to stop being just absolutely determined to screw over every core Democratic constituency, consider signing up for the party Assembly ballot here by monday the 11th of January, link here: https://www.ademelections.com/, and if you’re looking to find a serious progressive slate of delegates for your district like I was just moments prior to writing this post, you can find that at the Progressive Delegates Network here: https://www.adems2021.vote/districts
#this action item comes straight from Nithya so you know it's good#I feel like enough of you share a state with me that this is a useful post to create#Your district is your assembly district if you know that

decided to take this uqiz for my two main TS4-esque storylines at the moment that i have yet to actually post content about (messy bisexuals!OT3 and the FWB arrangement was probably a bad idea!OTP [although i already posted once about the latter. yes it's the one with the sex scene]) and uh. did not expect my OCs to be read for f*cking filth. ty to @wildmelon for the inspo (and letting me know about this quiz) <333
jalal — love as religion. [ love as the sole object of your reverence--nothing about you is holy, but maybe your love for another is ] when sappho said "in the crooks of your body i find my religion" and when the cast of les mis sang "to love another person is to see the face of God" and when halsey said "i found God, i found him in a lover" and when katherine philips wrote "to the dull angry world let's prove there's a religion in our love"
nithya — love as tenderness. [ love as gentleness after a lifetime of cruelty ] when ocean vuong said "sometimes being offered tenderness feels like the very proof that you've been ruined" and when pablo neruda said "like a jar you housed the infinite tenderness and the infinite oblivion shattered you like a jar" and when anais mitchell wrote "all i've ever known is how to hold my own, and now i wanna hold you, too”
iqra — love as a choice. [ love is beautiful because it's built deliberately ] when casey mcquinston wrote "that's the choice. i love him, with all that, because of all that, on purpose. i love him on purpose" and when jenny slate tweeted "i just want someone to grab my little face and scream on purpose, on purpose i am going to care about you" and when jodi picoult wrote "after fifteen years, love isn't just a feeling. it's a choice" and when the good place said "if soulmates do exist, they're not found they're made"
ha-sang. — love as being known. [ love is knowing all of someone and loving them anyway ] when tim kreider said "if we want the rewards of being loved we have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known" and when joe wright said "The idea that these two people know each other, knew each other when they first saw each other. That they recognized each other from their future" and when micah nemerever said "it was a relief and a horror to be known so perfectly"
ishita — love as hunger. [ love as ravenous desire, love as something fragrant and home-built ] when florence welch said "we all have a hunger" and when jenny slate asked "who will come into my kitchen and be hungry for me?" and when violet trefusis wrote "I want you hungrily, frenziedly. passionately. I am starving for you..." and when anne carson asked "what are we made of but hunger and rage?"
#* mine.#* inspo.#* ha-sang.#* ishita.#* iqra.#* jalal.#* nithya.#hallasimss#( * scalped i say. in my own home i say.#| more specifically my OCs were scalped but does it really matter tho. everyone's insane and unhinged and needs therapy maybe#| and they're all bi. diversity wins!!! Machine learning's crumbling foundations

Technological debt is insidious, a kind of socio-infrastructural subprime crisis that’s unfolding around us in slow motion. Our digital infrastructure is built atop layers and layers and layers of code that’s insecure due to a combination of bad practices and bad frameworks.
Even people who write secure code import insecure libraries, or plug it into insecure authorization systems or databases. Like asbestos in the walls, this cruft has been fragmenting, drifting into our air a crumb at a time.
We ignored these, treating them as containable, little breaches and now the walls are rupturing and choking clouds of toxic waste are everywhere.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/07/27/gas-on-the-fire/#a-safe-place-for-dangerous-ideas
The infosec apocalypse was decades in the making. The machine learning apocalypse, on the other hand…
ML has serious, institutional problems, the kind of thing you’d expect in a nascent discipline, which you’d hope would be worked out before it went into wide deployment.
ML is rife with all forms of statistical malpractice — AND it’s being used for high-speed, high-stakes automated classification and decision-making, as if it was a proven science whose professional ethos had the sober gravitas you’d expect from, say, civil engineering.
Civil engineers spend a lot of time making sure the buildings and bridges they design don’t kill the people who use them. Machine learning?
Hundreds of ML teams built models to automate covid detection, and every single one was useless or worse.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/08/02/autoquack/#gigo
The ML models failed due to failure to observe basic statistical rigor. One common failure mode?
Treating data that was known to be of poor quality as if it was reliable because good data was not available.
Obtaining good data and/or cleaning up bad data is tedious, repetitive grunt-work. It’s unglamorous, time-consuming, and low-waged. Cleaning data is the equivalent of sterilizing surgical implements — vital, high-skilled, and invisible unless someone fails to do it.
It’s work performed by anonymous, low-waged adjuncts to the surgeon, who is the star of the show and who gets credit for the success of the operation.
The title of a Google Research team (Nithya Sambasivan et al) paper published in ACM CHI beautifully summarizes how this is playing out in ML: “Everyone wants to do the model work, not the data work: Data Cascades in High-Stakes AI,”
https://storage.googleapis.com/pub-tools-public-publication-data/pdf/0d556e45afc54afeb2eb6b51a9bc1827b9961ff4.pdf
The paper analyzes ML failures from a cross-section of high-stakes projects (health diagnostics, anti-poaching, etc) in East Africa, West Africa and India. They trace the failures of these projects to data-quality, and drill into the factors that caused the data problems.
The failures stem from a variety of causes. First, data-gathering and cleaning are low-waged, invisible, and thankless work. Front-line workers who produce the data — like medical professionals who have to do extra data-entry — are not compensated for extra work.
Often, no one even bothers to explain what the work is for. Some of the data-cleaning workers are atomized pieceworkers, such as those who work for Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, who lack both the context in which the data was gathered and the context for how it will be used.
This data is passed to model-builders, who lack related domain expertise. The hastily labeled X-ray of a broken bone, annotated by an unregarded and overworked radiologist, is passed onto a data-scientist who knows nothing about broken bones and can’t assess the labels.
This is an age-old problem in automation, pre-dating computer science and even computers. The “scientific management” craze that started in the 1880s saw technicians observing skilled workers with stopwatches and clipboards, then restructuring the workers’ jobs by fiat.
Rather than engaging in the anthropological work that Clifford Geertz called “thick description,” the management “scientists” discarded workers’ qualitative experience, then treated their own assessments as quantitative and thus empirical.
http://hypergeertz.jku.at/GeertzTexts/Thick_Description.htm
How long a task takes is empirical, but what you call a “task” is subjective. Computer scientists take quantitative measurements, but decide what to measure on the basis of subjective judgment. This empiricism-washing sleight of hand is endemic to ML’s claims of neutrality.
In the early 2000s, there was a movement to produce tools and training that would let domain experts produce their own tools — rather than delivering “requirements” to a programmer, a bookstore clerk or nurse or librarian could just make their own tools using Visual Basic.
This was the radical humanist version of “learn to code” — a call to seize the means of computation and program, rather than being programmed. Over time, it was watered down, and today it lives on as a weak call for domain experts to be included in production.
The disdain for the qualitative expertise of domain experts who produce data is a well-understood guilty secret within ML circles, embodied in Frederick Jelinek’s ironic talk, “Every time I fire a linguist, the performance of the speech recognizer goes up.”
But a thick understanding of context is vital to improving data-quality. Take the American “voting wars,” where GOP-affiliated vendors are brought in to purge voting rolls of duplicate entries — people who are registered to vote in more than one place.
These tools have a 99% false-positive rate.
Ninety. Nine. Percent.
To understand how they go so terribly wrong, you need a thick understanding of the context in which the data they analyze is produced.
https://5harad.com/papers/1p1v.pdf
The core assumption of these tools is that two people with the same name and date of birth are probably the same person.
But guess what month people named “June” are likely to be born in? Guess what birthday is shared by many people named “Noel” or “Carol”?
Many states represent unknown birthdays as “January 1,” or “January 1, 1901.” If you find someone on a voter roll whose birthday is represented as 1/1, you have no idea what their birthday is, and they almost certainly don’t share a birthday with other 1/1s.
But false positives aren’t evenly distributed. Ethnic groups whose surnames were assigned in recent history for tax-collection purposes (Ashkenazi Jews, Han Chinese, Koreans, etc) have a relatively small pool of surnames and a slightly larger pool of first names.
This is likewise true of the descendants of colonized and enslaved people, whose surnames were assigned to them for administrative purposes and see a high degree of overlap. When you see two voter rolls with a Juan Gomez born on Jan 1, you need to apply thick analysis.
Unless, of course, you don’t care about purging the people who are most likely to face structural impediments to voter registration (such as no local DMV office) and who are also likely to be racialized (for example, migrants whose names were changed at Ellis Island).
ML practitioners don’t merely use poor quality data when good quality data isn’t available — they also use the poor quality data to assess the resulting models. When you train an ML model, you hold back some of the training data for assessment purposes.
So maybe you start with 10,000 eye scans labeled for the presence of eye disease. You train your model with 9,000 scans and then ask the model to assess the remaining 1,000 scans to see whether it can make accurate classifications.
But if the data is no good, the assessment is also no good. As the paper’s authors put it, it’s important to “catch[] data errors using mechanisms specific to data validation, instead of using model performance as a proxy for data quality.”
ML practitioners studied for the paper — practitioners engaged in “high-stakes” model building reported that they had to gather their own data for their models through field partners, “a task which many admitted to being unprepared for.”
High-stakes ML work has inherited a host of sloppy practices from ad-tech, where ML saw its first boom. Ad-tech aims for “70–75% accuracy.”
That may be fine if you’re deciding whether to show someone an ad, but it’s a very different matter if you’re deciding whether someone needs treatment for an eye-disease that, untreated, will result in irreversible total blindness.
Even when models are useful at classifying input produced under present-day lab conditions, those conditions are subject to several kinds of “drift.”
For example, “hardware drift,” where models trained on images from pristine new cameras are asked to assess images produced by cameras from field clinics, where lenses are impossible to keep clean (see also “environmental drift” and “human drift”).
Bad data makes bad models. Bad models instruct people to make ineffective or harmful interventions. Those bad interventions produce more bad data, which is fed into more bad models — it’s a “data-cascade.”
GIGO — Garbage In, Garbage Out — was already a bedrock of statistical practice before the term was coined in 1957. Statistical analysis and inference cannot proceed from bad data.
Producing good data and validating data-sets are the kind of unsexy, undercompensated maintenance work that all infrastructure requires — and, as with other kinds of infrastructure, it is undervalued by journals, academic departments, funders, corporations and governments.
But all technological debts accrue punitive interest. The decision to operate on bad data because good data is in short supply isn’t like looking for your car-keys under the lamp-post — it’s like driving with untrustworthy brakes and a dirty windscreen.

Authenticity or Being Authentic ~ How I experience it
I knew this English word a long time ago and the dictionary meaning is " the quality of being genuine or real".
Most of the time I have used this word on my defense to express my views. Instead of using the word authentic I mostly called it as " my candid view". I belong to the set of people who will mostly not agree for the sake of agreement ( no democracy here). If there is a diverse view , express it , mention it explicitly so that in future complication is eliminated. However, most of the time it is a boomerang. You realized that you are judged , labelled , perceived ruthlessly because there are far more people in the world who feel its okay to keep shut their mouth and say everything in their mind or behind the back but never in the front-end. Their thought is "I did not say it - I am a good person". May be many of them are really good !!
However, slowly and gradually I found myself shutting down, trying to adjust to the world. It is mostly difficult for the people like me because it is not me.
When you think you have adjusted to your new fakeness , again this word got reintroduced, in a different space through my teacher Nithya Shanti. He mentioned the brief outline and few ways to be able to practice the same. The objective is multifold, who are you really ? How do you reveal yourself ?. All my attempt to practice even in close circle left me more bruised, yet post every episode I reflected and realized something very simple.
I will be using the analogy of " Cactus" as a metaphor to explain how I understood or re-understood the word Authentic in my life. The moment I say Cactus , in my mind comes a prickly image first and thus a degree of resistance to admire the plant as "it is". The word "Authentic" has same amount of resistance, it is immediately understood as "Harsh , straight forward , rude , direct , unacceptable , unpolitical etc".
Authenticity is not situational or person specific. It is nothing about anyone else . It's about me only. If I look into the Cactus and its flower, it is what it is , it does not want to become rose or sunflower. It is not trying to be anything. First step is to be able to see the plant exactly as it is , without disowning any part. Only if we have the ability and capacity you may fall in love with the plant and even its prickly thorns. One would be able to see how it nourishes the surroundings, how its contributes to its eco-system, how it is so beautiful. This is something we can do for human beings too. Most of the times , we are too eager to jump in the train of judgement, negation thus labeling the person. For the one who had made an attempt to be authentic, how many of us have killed it before it even bloomed. How many of us have thrown away a Cactus plant because it is understood to be " Non Feng Sui", we do the same with human too.
Human gifted with intelligence, we say we are trying to be authentic. Which means- I am trying to be someone which I am not. I am always authentic, I was born with the seed of authenticity however due to various conditioning and beliefs within me , I have stopped "being me" and started projecting myself as someone. Trying hard to push the image ( remember we are a saint in our own stories and rest are nah !!). I am authentic in my profession but at home I cannot be because I have to adjust with XYZ. Is that true? Is that true that only through situation you can practice being authentic ?
So in life when I am "being me" ,there would be murmur around. It's okay, they are also adjusting to the new me , I allow them. This process is hit and miss , no straight therapy. Be prepared, you will lose relationships and this loss will reveal another layer within you. This is a spiral, the point is to observe and observe and never to conclude.
Authenticity is just a way of peeling oneself , making yourself raw and let the new skin to appear to be peeled again. Mostly, it will take you to know yourself better. You are not here to know everyone or anyone. This is your journey for yourself. I am in this journey , join me or judge me or label me, all is okay.

TW mentions of suicide
Blood seeped from underneath me; it was dark, cold and I didn't know what had gone through my head in that moment. Someone was screaming, I'm not sure who, was it one of The Faith's members? Was it someone I knew from the house? My head spun, I could barely make sense of the words. All I heard was my name being shouted and I felt my breathing starting to slow down, I was dying, not from the impact, but from my own selfish action. Well, maybe I was dying from the impact. That didn't matter though. All I could think about were my friends and family. I had failed them; I failed everything I did in my life. I'm sorry that I was so selfish. Maybe we'll meet in another life. And I'll make sure not to fuck up that one. @circusfreakster
