Yesterday [April 30, 2024], a bipartisan collection of US Senators introduced the Fans First Act, which would help address flaws in the current live event ticketing system by increasing transparency in ticket sales, and protecting consumers from fake or dramatically overpriced tickets.

Today, the artists and Congressmen allege, buying a ticket to a concert or sporting event requires negotiating a minefield of predatory practices, such as speculative ticket buying and the use of automated programs to buy large numbers of tickets for resale at inflated prices.

The legislation would ban such practices, and include provisions for guaranteed refunds in the event of a cancellation.

The political campaign organizers, calling themselves “Fix the Tix” write that included among the supporters of the legislation is a coalition of live event industry organizations and professionals, who have formed to advocate on behalf of concertgoers.

This includes a steering committee led by Eventbrite [Note: lol, I'm assuming Eventbrite just signed on to undermine Ticketmaster and for PR purposes] and the National Independent Value Association that’s supported by dozens of artistic unions, independent ticket sellers, and of course, over 250 artists and bands, including Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews, Cyndi Lauper, Lorde, Sia, Train, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, and hundreds more which you can read here.

“Buying a ticket to see your favorite artist or team is out of reach for too many Americans,” said Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).

“Bots, hidden fees, and predatory practices are hurting consumers whether they want to catch a home game, an up-and-coming artist, or a major headliner like Taylor Swift or Bad Bunny. From ensuring fans get refunds for canceled shows to banning speculative ticket sales, this bipartisan legislation will improve the ticketing experience.”

Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Roger Wicker (R-MS), John Cornyn (R-TX) and Peter Welch (D-VT) also signed on to the Fan First Act.

In the House, parallel legislation was just passed through committee 45-0.

I do, however, kind of disagree with the other points. I think that for any other social media it's correct, twt or fb does not have the culture to make these sorts of parody accounts viable or not-counter-productive to increasing the linux market share. But I don't think that tumblr is the same.

I think that tumblr does. I think the tumblr community has always been this somewhat ephemeral yet perpetual inside joke culture where almost every user is in-the-know, and new users to the joke are able generally able to catch on quickly to it due to their general understanding of they way tumblr communities operate.

IMO, it's a somewhat quick pipeline of:

I can appreciate that it might be intimidating to seek out help as a new linux user, and especially a new linux & tumblr user, but looking through these blogs, you do see them helping out people ^^. heck, my last post was helping someone getting wayland working on an nvidia system.

The main goal of these blogs is not to be a legitimate CS service to general end-users. they aren't affiliated with the software their blog is named after, so in many cases they *cant*. The goal is instead to foster a community around linux, creating a general network of blogs of the various FOSS projects that they enjoy.

I think that final sentiment, of these blogs detering end users, is most likely counter to their actual effect on end users who are considering switching to linux.

We all know a lot of tumblr is 20 or 30 something year olds who have just stuck around since ~2012ish, and new users to tumblr join with pre-existing knowledge of the culture and platform. Almost anyone coming across these blogs are going to be people who can see the "in" joke, and acclimate. I do highly doubt that a random facebook mom who's son convinced her to install mint on her old laptop would find tumblr, find a -official blog, scroll through said blog, and be detered from using mint.

The other side of this is that any tumblr users who come across these blogs, be it with an inkling of desire to switch to linux or not, will see a vibrant and active community that fits very well into the tumblr community. They remember, or have heard of, the amtrac & OSHA blogs, and are therefore probably aware that this is a pre-existing meme on here.

In all likelyhood, this will probably further incentivize them to make the switch, as they would be more attracted to a community of their peers over a community of redditors telling them to read the arch wiki repeatedly

I can, on the other hand, definitely see that for people who have difficulties with parsing tone, and especially sarcasm, would have trouble with this. TBH, I have these difficulties (hence when I was speaking to you yesterday I used the /unjerk indicator, as I couldn't tell what the tone of the conversation was), and so it took me a little while of being in this weird "I'm 99% sure these *aren't* official, but what if?". Macroscopic C₅₄₀ model offers new way to study sound wave propagation in topological metamaterials

Researchers have taken a novel approach to studying the interaction between certain topological metamaterials and sound wave propagation. The technique, described by IMDEA Materials' Dr. Johan Christensen as "cut-and-glue," was one of the methods employed in the recent publication "Visualizing the topological pentagon states of a giant C540 metamaterial" in Nature Communications. The study focuses on Buckminsterfullerene, or "buckyballs," and uses 3D printing to scale up the molecular structure of a C540 fullerene, which typically has an approximate diameter of around 1.1 nanometer (nm). To put that size into perspective, it is roughly 70,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair. Three illegal migrants with the vicious Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua abducted a man and two kids in Texas — then executed the older victim and dumped his body on the side of the road, authorities say.

Carl Luis Zambrano-Bolivar, 26, Jhonata Nahin Toro Gonzalez, 22, and Ehiker Morales Mendoza, 38, were recently arrested for the murder of Nilzuly Enrique Arneaud-Petit, 33, who was found dead Aug. 24 with a single gunshot wound to the head in Farmers Branch just outside Dallas, DHS officials said.

While police were responding to a report of a body, they learned of two juveniles possibly related to the victim walking on a service road about 10 miles away, according to the Farmers Branch Police Department.

Investigators caught up with the minors and were told the kids and Arneaud-Petit had been “forcibly taken by several unknown suspects from an apartment complex” in Dallas earlier that night, police said.

The suspects drove Andreau-Petit and the juveniles to the location in Farmers Branch, where they fatally shot the 33-year-old man, police said. The kids told investigators the suspects then fled with them in a sedan before releasing them on the service road in nearby Lewisville. 

Andreau-Petit was an associate of the violent gangsters “and allegedly involved in a complex ATM theft operation targeting several locations nationwide,” police said.

He was accused of withholding money from other group members, which led to his kidnapping and execution, police said.

TdA members Zambrano-Bolivar and Toro Gonzalez were arrested in Aurora, Colo., in September by Denver’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations team, DHS officials said.

A third member of the feared prison gang, Mendoza, was busted Oct. 11 in Las Cruces, NM.

All three were in the country illegally, authorities said.

A fourth man also wanted in the murder, 29-year-old Jhonny Jesus Martinez Serrano, remains at large.

The three men in custody are expected to be extradited to Texas to be prosecuted on charges of capital murder and aggravated kidnapping, according to Homeland Security Investigations.

“Violent criminal organizations and transnational gangs like Tren de Aragua are a plague upon our communities that rely on fear and violence to [rain] terror on hardworking and law-abiding residents,” said HSI Dallas acting Special Agent in Charge Travis Pickard.

 “We have sent a resounding message that we are united in our efforts to dismantle these violent criminal networks and put an end to the lawlessness that they spread,” he added.

The violent gang has been terrorizing cities across the US.

In August, the ruthless group made national headlines when frightening video capturing some of its gun-wielding members storming through an Aurora apartment complex went viral.

The sun up close: Observations with new VTT camera technology deliver 8K image resolution

Large and complex sunspot groups characterize the surface of the dynamic sun during its activity cycle. A new camera system at the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) at the Observatorio del Teide on Tenerife uses image restoration methods to capture small structures in active areas.

This has resulted in unique, high-resolution images that reveal the smallest details in active regions of the sun's surface. The research is published in the journal Solar Physics.

Large solar telescopes can observe the smallest details on the surface of the sun, but only in a small field of view. As a result, they miss the large-scale development of active regions. Smaller telescopes in space or in Earth-spanning networks observe the entire solar disk around the clock, but cannot zoom into the complex and rapidly changing structures that are shaped by the magnetic field.

This is where the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) on Tenerife, which has been in operation since 1988, comes into play. It is characterized by a large field of view and good spatial resolution, thus closing the gap between these two types of telescopes.

With the help of the new, modern camera system of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP), the entire field of view of the VTT has now been restored for the first time. For a restored image, 100 short-time-exposure images with 8,000 × 6,000 pixels are required, which are recorded at 25 frames per second.

This means that the camera system delivers reconstructed images with an 8K image resolution for the first time. The fast image sequence makes it possible to eliminate the disturbing influences of Earth's turbulent atmosphere from the solar images.

As a result, the telescope's theoretical spatial resolution of down to 100 km on the surface of the sun can be achieved. Time-lapse recordings of the restored images also enable the investigation of dynamic processes on time scales of 20 seconds.

The new camera system complements the HELioseismic Large Region Interferometric Device (HELLRIDE), Laser Absolute Reference Spectrograph (LARS), and Fast Multi-line Universal Spectrograph (FaMuLUS) instruments at the VTT, which are operated by the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg (TLS), the Institute for Solar Physics (KIS) in Freiburg, and the AIP, respectively.

"In order to better understand solar activity, it is crucial not only to analyze the fundamental processes of the fine structure and the long-term development of global activity with various instruments," says Rolf Schlichenmaier, scientist at the KIS, "but also to investigate the temporal evolution of the magnetic field in active regions."

The new images show areas that correspond to around 1/7 of the sun's diameter, i.e., around 200,000 km. This makes it possible to observe large-scale structures of the active sun such as plasma motions and sunspot groups. In comparison, large telescopes typically only provide image fields of around 75,000 km in diameter.

"Our expectations of the camera system were more than fulfilled right from the start," says Robert Kamlah, who carried out the project as part of his doctoral thesis at the AIP and the University of Potsdam.

The G-band observations demonstrated how the sunspots are embedded in the supergranulation, i.e., a large-scale convective pattern. The non-radial orientation and twist of the penumbral filaments revealed the complex magnetic field structure, which was responsible for three major and many minor flares in the active region.

By using special filters, the smallest magnetic field signatures become visible as bright structures in the solar images. Time series in the light of the singly ionized calcium line at 393.3 nm and in the Fraunhofer G-band at 430.7 nm enabled the identification of areas with increased activity and the tracking of plasma motions in the active regions in two layers of the solar atmosphere (photosphere and transition to the chromosphere). In addition, the researchers investigated methods for measuring image and observation quality.

"The results obtained show how, together with our partners, we are teaching an old telescope new tricks," says Carsten Denker, head of the Solar Physics Section at the AIP. Telescopes like the VTT can make important contributions to the study of solar activity, especially when information about a large active region and its surroundings must be captured, such as during solar flares and other eruptive events as part of space weather forecasting.

In the future, low-cost CMOS camera systems with 8K image resolution will also play an important role for the next generation of instruments on 4-meter solar telescopes, as they will triple the field of view of current 4K camera systems.

Okay I have to talk about it more explicitly, because the extent to which this man has just burned his bridges is breathtaking to me.

Like. We've always known he was a hothead who liked to run off at the mouth when pissed on social media, but there is a massive gaping chasm of difference between that and sitting down with a Variety reporter to slam your former network publicly and basically call them trash. Even if you're correct, that's the kind of thing you just don't do if you ever want anyone else to hire you.

And it truly can't have been a shock, right? Because Nexstar's strategy has been obvious and not at all a secret from the beginning. The first thing they did when they bought the CW was axe most of the scripted shows. They kept the handful that were high performing, fit their target demo best, and/or were close to the syndication point. But they cancelled Nancy Drew after four seasons. They cancelled Roswell, NM after four seasons. Slowly but surely, they cancelled everything, sometimes giving them enough of a heads up to wrap things up satisfyingly...and sometimes not.

So they were always, obviously, going to cancel Walker after four seasons. Even though it was one of their top performing shows. Because as much as I dislike the man, he's right about one thing: they were very transparent from the beginning about wanting cheap, easy-to-make, mindless content. They don't want to pay a huge roster of writers and actors and set crew and stunt coordinators and SFX folks and all the people required to make a scripted show worth watching week to week.

What fascinates me is that he talks like he's surprised about this. Like he somehow really thought his pet project would be exempt from this treatment. I don't even know what to do with that. I don't want to study him, but if someone else does, I'll read your thesis!

What else is fascinating to me is the way that in hindsight, it feels like this was a much longer time coming than it initially seemed. We knew big changes were going to come with Nexstar's purchase of the network, but the CW's decline started, IMO, long before that, when it began cancelling some of its longest-running mainstays like The Vampire Diaries, and relying too heavily on reboots and spin-offs. It's just inconceivable to me that someone who was entrenched in this machine since his early 20s wasn't aware this was coming. I almost feel bad for the guy.

I have so much hate in my heart for noco fans... To answer honestly though, it's a half-joke. In a vacuum, the ship itself isn't problematic. I do, however, have some beef with most noco fans. In my opinion, a lot of noco content comes of as very fetlshy and has a strange fujoshi feel to it. (Obviously not saying all noco fans are fujos.) Along with that, I find a lot of noco fanart & noco fan's interpretations of Noah and Cody (mainly Cody tbh) to be completely out of character, often dismissing Cody's pervy, loud-mouthed, and loyal personality in favor of a shy and angsty one.

In my experience, many noco fans often go out of their way to bash other ships for their own. I actually had a real-life interaction last summer with this. I was selling my art at an event and someone came up to me, saw my gwody art, and began talking about how they didn't like gwody and that noco was so much better... when I didn't ask. Some of them also spread misinformation to try to validate their ship, like the "cody and noah were supposed to be together but cartoon network censored them" myth is still going around despite it being debunked by a tdi crew member.

I genuinely don't care if noco fans follow my account. It's really just there as a deterrent, and I have no personal beef against noco fans or the ship itself, it's just that sometimes noco shippers give me very strange vibes. I draw mainly for myself so I don't really care if my potential following suffers because someone might think my bio is genuine.
