so naturally, at your new boyfriend’s birthday party, when you’re sitting on his lap, helping him unwrap your present of a jean-paul gaultier cologne he’d wanted, luke—in classic luke fashion—thought this would be his chance. your sorority sister, drunk off of her wits—bless her heart—came up to you and whispered some slurred imperative about how you needed to get to ‘the square’.

your eyebrows furrowed at her as her eyebrows raised, questioning the significance of ‘the square’ and why the man who prompted her to ask chose there. you said no words, excusing yourself after finding her a water and alka seltzer.

“you really couldn’t help yourself, huh?” are the first words you say to luke, button up shirt open and lying on his back on the false grass. “me? you’re one to talk, sweetheart,” you rolled your eyes at his use of the nickname, crossing your arms as you stand over him.

beneath the twilight, your exposed shoulder skin glistened like the moon, just a sliver of it visible in the northern night sky. luke had obviously had something to drink or smoke, or both, because he slurred his words as he patted the turf next to him. “sit down. c’mon, like the good ol’ days,”

‘the square’ was a small patch of land in the middle area between his frat’s and your sorority’s backyards. it was insignificant to most everybody else, but you and luke had claimed it as yours on drizzly nights like these, when the owl called and adolescence snored. it didn’t even hold sexual reminiscences, for each night you spent on the square was spent just talking. he would gloat about some things he did over the summer, interrogate you on your sex life, laugh at your offense and crack bad jokes. he was the worst person to spend valuable time with, but you returned every night, nonetheless.

“i’m surprised, castellan. been here a full sixty seconds and you haven’t tried to fuck me,” you remained standing over his lax body, crossing your arms over your chest. “do you want me to try to fuck you? because i’m down,” he looks up at you with that smile of his. that toothy, million dollar, smile that reassures whomever it is on the receiving end that everything is okay and there’s not a thing to worry about.

you snort, giving in and sitting down. luke pulls you into his lap before your butt can even hit the cool grass, eliciting a yelp from you. his lips press against your shoulder, strong, warm arms wrap around your waist and you can’t help but melt into the body beneath you. “luke,” your voice is meant to be a warning, supposed to remind him and yourself that you belong to another and this was not right, but he did nothing except for hold you tighter and smile against your skin.

“he doesn’t make you feel like i do.” he spoke the words out of your mind, the voice of truth you swallowed down with a knowing conscience that it would rise to the surface eventually. this wasn’t what you wanted. your single goal wasn’t to make luke jealous, it wasn’t even to show him what he was missing. you just wanted it to be different. you wanted somebody to take you seriously enough to call you theirs.

but anybody who did wasn’t him.

“luke,” this time, you weren’t trying to ward off anything. this time, you were welcoming him and all his invasive, rude, luke-like, traits and the pain you knew would come with letting him in once more. “i know, baby, i know.” he said no further words before flipping the pair of you over and letting your back onto the ground. you focused on none else other than the feeling of his lips finally landing on yours, the trace of his fingers across your denim skirt’s hem. “can i?” luke’s fingers dipped past the fabric, drawing swirls on your skin. “mhm, yeah,” your smile is audible and spreads to luke’s lips.

if there was one thing luke always did, it was worship you. this time was no different. his lips were everywhere, and when they weren’t pecking kisses all over you, he was breathing praises like you were a mortal saint against your skin. and when he entered you, he fucked you like he couldn’t believe he got the chance to feel you again. but he knew what the outcome of this would be; of course he did.

you didn’t know him as a particularly selfish lover, but the way he chased his high, rutting his hips against yours to the point of overwhelmed stuttering suggested that to be true.

and when it was all said and done and the past hung in the air like a wonder of the world, luke stood and looked down at you like you previously did him.

“break up with him.”

“why?”

“you know why.”

there was no denying that, so you did none else than nod.

back in 2020, i wrote a domestic (practically ooc) scene between komanami, and i first tried re-writing that for your request but i realized there wasn't much room to put much dialogue/banter which i wanted to prioritize since you want to see them getting along. so i wrote this to try emphasizing the dynamic i like to see them in while they're friends, i hope you like it!

“Komaeda-kun.” 

He doesn’t look up from his book. His eyes glaze over a new line as an absent smile forms on his face. 

If Nanami didn’t know any better, she’d assume he’s ignoring her. But she does know better, and he’s definitely ignoring her, but that’s not going to stop her. 

“Why are you reading a vampire romance?” 

Komaeda’s green eyes finally look up at her with a patient grin. She’s standing right in front of his desk. And for once, she gets to feel taller than him since he’s sitting. 

“Hm? Did you say something?” 

“You’re reading a vampire romance,” Nanami repeats, bending lower at the waist to inspect more of the cover. Komaeda lowers his book and lays it flat on the table, still open to the page he was at.

The classroom has filled out with the rest of their peers, and the bell rang to signal the start of class, but Miss Yukizome must be running late because she’s nowhere in sight. Most of their classmates have receded into their friend groups, sharing morning snacks, talking and gossiping. The golden light of the morning sun is illuminating the classroom through the windows. 

Usually, Nanami spends her time before class absorbed in her Gamegirl, never once looking up. But today, she defeated a level of her Zelda game after countless tumultuous tries and was relieved enough to lift her gaze. She caught the moment Komaeda stopped by his seat, shrugged off his bookbag and pulled out the chair for himself. 

She’s been trying to spend more time with him after noticing his lack of interaction with their classmates. Nanami had gotten the chance to befriend everyone else in their class, yet Komaeda had managed to sink into the background and let himself go unseen. He can’t disappear forever, though, and she’s made sure to remind him of it. 

“A vampiric romance,” Komaeda tests the words while he smiles at her. “You must be seeing things. I can’t recall that’s in my taste.” 

Nanami leans further over his desk, letting herself stoop low enough to rest her arms on the surface. She spins the book to face her and traces the first line of dialogue that catches her eye. 

“‘And so, the lion fell in love with the lamb’,” She reads aloud. “‘What a stupid lamb’.”

“‘What a sick, masochistic lion’,” Komaeda drones back, grabbing the book to pull it back. “Was this the wrong move, Nanami-san? Has my choice in book today offended you?”

“No,” Nanami states calmly, “I just didn’t think you’d choose to read that.” 

She walks around his desk and bumps the side of his chair with her leg lightly. He scoots to the side to give her room to sit. The seat isn’t wide enough for two, but Miss Yukizome will likely arrive soon, so it’s not like they’ll stay here for long. 

“You’re right, as usual. This book was never in my interest,” Komaeda says pensively, flipping the book to its synopsis, so he could inspect it with her. 

“Then why read it?” 

“Oh, I found it in pristine condition in the school’s dumpster,” Komaeda replies brightly, “I fell and hit myself against the metal of it and this landed right beside me.” 

Nanami frowns. “Are you okay?” 

“Hm? From the fall?” He shrugs it off, “Well, I’m alive, aren’t I? Don’t concern yourself with me.” 

“Was that recent?” 

“It was yesterday,” Komaeda says, “I was walking home from campus and I tripped on a pencil someone must have dropped. It must have looked embarrassing from the outside. All I remember is the crash of the impact and the dizziness keeping me on the ground for a little.” 

Nanami blinks. “That’s intense.” 

Komaeda laughs. “It was really nothing. And I got a free book out of it.” 

Nanami opens her mouth. She hesitates for a beat before getting herself to speak. 

“Would you stop that?” 

Komaeda raises his eyebrows. “Stop what?” 

“Dismissing yourself. You push away negative experiences in favor of the single good thing that come out of them.” 

He nervously looks to the side. “Is that a bad thing?” 

“The way you do it, yes. You don’t let yourself complain about the negatives. You know…” She leans a little closer, “It’s not healthy to keep those emotions in you. You can’t always turn things hopeful. It’ll end up backfiring eventually.” 

Komaeda stares at her without a discernible expression. 

She looks away from him before quietly finalizing her words. “...I think… Anyway, are you liking the book?” 

Komaeda looks at the open novel and quickly puts on a smile.

One of the many things Nanami appreciates about him is his ability to drop conversations the second she wordlessly requests it. Trying to teach Komaeda that his feelings matter is a long-term lesson to apply. She can’t act so straightforward at eight in the morning on a single Wednesday. If she continued, he’d shut down at her persistence and end up pushing her away. Which is the last thing she wants. 

“Ah, I wouldn’t say I’m a fan thus far…”

“You’ve enjoyed half of it,” Nanami says, pointing at the edge of the pages. “You can’t deny it because I can see how much you've read.” 

“Mmm, I fear you’re seeing the wrong things, Nanami-san. I have merely tolerated the book for two-hundred-and-some pages.” 

“Like how I tolerate the games I spend any of my time on?” 

The side of Komaeda’s lip quirks up. 

“Now that I think about it, I also recently tolerated a visual novel where the main love interest was a vampire,” Nanami continues, “So I guess blood-sucking romances are something we both feel whatever about.” 

“I’m honored to have something in common with an Ultimate.” 

“You’re an Ultimate, too,” Nanami says. “And my friend.” 

Komaeda almost rolls his eyes. “Generous as always.” 

“I’m being sincere,” Nanami reaffirms. She ignores the skeptical look in Komaeda’s eyes and goes back to skimming the page of his book. 

“Why is he talking about the smell of her throat?” 

Komaeda shrugs, “I’m not well versed in brooding vampires.” 

“Maybe after you read this book, you will be,” Nanami suggests. “Oh, and once you are, you can help me finish that visual novel. There are some choices that stumped me the last time.” 

“So we can experience a tolerable story together?” 

"Yeah. And obviously not find any of it enjoyable."

"Somehow, I feel your company could change that, Nanami-san."

Nanami grins and leans her shoulder against his, quietly continuing to read with him while waiting for their instructor to arrive.

1) my favorite thing i’ve ever written is probably Ivy & Stone or my current WIP Starlight !! both, at least in my opinion, are the only series that i’ve walked away feeling 100% proud of. i think they show the most of me in them, and it’s the best writing i’ve ever done (and i lose sleep over whether or not it’s good enough to try and publish)

2) i love this question !!!! okay so ideally i’d live in a happy little warm domestic bubble with Elementary!Joel, but in reality i’m too dark and twisty for all that so maybe Starlight as long as i have some sick ass magic?? maybe Plastic Hearts as long dieter and i don’t destroy each other entirely?? maybe Ivy & Stone as long as i don’t get typhoid fever staying cramped up in frankie’s cottage??

3) all the little characters and scenes and my endless stream of thought and my need for escapism!! if i didn’t write, i think i’d actually plunge into insanity 🥰 but inspo wise, music does a lot for me! i’ve always deeply associated music and my writing, and there’s always a couple easter eggs thrown in courtesy of whatever playlist i’ve made for the story.

4) i have all three! my comfort movie’s vary but the rotation is usually the Twilight saga, anything with Paul Newman in it, and Stepbrothers for the nostalgia. my comfort songs are seven by Taylor Swift bc ✨ trauma and girlhood ✨, You’ve Got to Learn by Nina Simone because HEARTBREAK, and He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones because (sad warning) it always reminds me of my mom and i like to play it when the grief hits me because it makes it feel like i’m five again sitting on her lap. and my comfort painting is always always always Monet’s Water Lillies and i’ve never known why, seeing it just feels like a warm hug.

5) the imposter syndrome/self-deprecation is SCREAMING right now but thank you, i adore you, i am glad to exist here in this space with you, and believe deeply in my core that everything you believe i am you are that multiplied by infinity.

tldr: sadly it's not legal the way fanart is for a whole lot of reasons that I think are kinda idiotic because if one is viable then also the other would be though I do get why and you absolutely can not and should not advertise on ao3 that you're taking them or that fic X was a commission because it's forbidden by their terms, but

on the other side it's extremely unlikely that anyone gets prosecuted for it these days especially if you're not writing for someone who behaves like anne rice of old but like people getting dragged to court for writing fic isn't likely these days and even back when anne rice was being extremely serious about it people would get cease and desist notifications rather than actually having to face more repercussions (that was of course for free fic) but like... let's be real anon now where the hell is the reylo fanfic book

now: anyone like literally anyone into fandoms would see this and think WOW I'LL EAT MY HAT IF THIS WASN'T A REYLO FIC BEFORE, and I just looked it up and it thanks rian johnson at the end of it so like.... I mean idk how you could make it any clearer because it is. this book is a new york times bestseller X°D like, new york times bestseller, and it's a reworked fanfic that no one tried to hide was a reworked fanfic. is the author getting sued by disney to hell and back? no she's not. I would like to also state that disney is the corporation that when asked if a family could put a spiderman picture on the grave of their five year old dead child denied the request on the basis of wanting to preserve the innocence of the characters on a stupidass copyright basis, so like... I mean I doubt that they have scruples in picking battles when it comes to their property, and they haven't bothered to go after this one, and not even counting this.... like everyone and their relatives knows that 50sog was a twilight fanfic but did anyone complain? nah. and like... the 50sog author sure as fuck profited off their au.

now, does this mean it's legal? still no. but do I think it's likely that random person (you, me, whoever else) taking commissions to pay the bills and making extremely little money from it in comparison to what either reylo book over there or 50sog did is gonna get targeted because they took writing commissions that they aren't advertising as such on the platform they publish them on (that is if you do bc if someone wants a private commission you don't even have to publish it)? I also don't think that either also because most ppl whose work you'll write fic for are rich enough that your fic won't at all harm their earnings nor they'll risk stealing ideas from you for the follow-up novel if they read it. also there's a bunch of stuff for which you wouldn't even need to worry bc idk sherlock holmes stories are off copyrights so if you want to write a SH fanfic and publish it you don't even have to pay royalties and I'd like to remind everyone neil gaiman won an award with a study in emerald which he himself described as sherlock holmes meets lovecraftian horror fanfic so like... half of your fave authors prob wrote fic and published it. (michael chabon aka one of my faves ever also published his sherlock holmes fic which makes me thing a bunch of male authors absolutely wrote SH fic when in middle school and I can't blame them for that but nvm) I get being nervous but 99.9999999% you'll be fine if you take them, and good luck if you do <3

"The End of Time part 1" thoughts

me trying to recap this would take longer than the actual episode cause so much shit happened but i'll try to give a highlights reel when commentary as appropriate

the narration about how "in the final days of planet earth....everyone had bad dreams" kinda reminds me of eleven's ending monologue in "day of the doctor" and i like thinking about that connecting link. i don't know what that connection would mean but i'm sitting here letting it wash over me like a warm bath

ten gets a summons from the ood at the end of last episode and fucks around for a while before bothering to show back up at the planet of the ood. he got married! to liz 1! "her nickname is no longer, well" get it playa. the ood show him a teaser trailer for the rest of the episode and some cult breaks lucy saxon out of jail to do some fucking alchemy i guess? "the secret books of saxon" i like when doctor who gets corny but this was pushing it. they resurrect the master but lucy fucked it up just enough

i think i accidentally deleted an anon message last night bc i was in the middle of answering it while extremely tired, but i think it was about hypocrisy in the YA community wrt age gap relationships, etc. 

my thoughts on this subject are that there is a lot of bad discourse around age gaps, but, generally speaking, i think for me, age gaps are more relevant the younger/less mentally or emotionally developed one of the parties is. in an IRL context, i sort of feel like as long as both parties are over the age of around 25-26 (i.e. when the brain stops developing), people are fully adults and can thus make their own independent choices. (this is why leo dicaprio’s tendency to only date women below the age of 25 is.......sketchy to say the least.) 

of course, that is in real life. in fiction, i’m a little more open to other possibilities (especially if we’re talking like.....relationships with a functionally immortal supernatural being, which is very common in YA fantasy.) i think it’s stupid to try to like “cancel” books or authors for having age gap romances (as long as one of the parties isn’t like.......a child) since it presupposes that the kind of romance someone reads about is exactly what they want IRL and isn’t just like......a form of entertainment (which is exactly what it is lol). 

honestly, it kind of reminds me of some of the debates that were happening online in the late 2000s/early 2010s around the time of the twilight craze. i, myself, was never a twilight fan (i was actually an anti lmao) but one of the criticisms often lobbied at the franchise was that, bc edward cullen exhibits extremely creepy behavior and abusive tendencies, it was setting a bad example for teenage girls who might then be drawn into abusive relationships irl. 

10-13 years later, as a member of the demographic that was precisely the target audience for twilight and having a number of female friends my age who i know for a fact were huge twilight fans back in the day, i can tell you that these women are no more likely to get drawn into an abusive relationship than any other person. 

what we read as children and teenagers does affect us and shape our views, but i think the thing about that is that it’s extremely difficult (nigh on impossible) to know what will stick and what won’t bc that’s a matter of the individual’s personal preferences and psychology. i think that’s the truth of it, and frankly, i think many YA adults know that, and it’s what makes them lose their shit time and time again.

Giving you a compliment is a normal part of a relationship and you should not bend over backwards for the person doing something so simple. When he gets more comfortable he loves when you rest your head on his tummy and he can play with your hair and touch your shoulders

You get palpitations thinking about it

You’re the only one allowed to play with his hair or call him maggie/mags

He sometimes borrows your scrunchies and it’s really really cute

You end up with this little routine of swapping them when they stop smelling like the other person

If you don’t wear scrunchies you get him some and he thinks it’s adorable

You also steal them and swap them out when they don’t smell like him anymore

He loves having picnics outside with you

Especially to go stargazing

Yeah rooftop picnics are a thing

Plus people can’t really see what you’re doing and no one really goes up there so uh

As long as you can stay quiet you’re never bored

Sometimes when you’re stargazing his hand will just kind of gradually go from resting on your hip to wrapping his arms around you and having you lean against his chest

You sometimes raid the fridge together in the middle of the night

You took him to mcdonalds at like 2am once

It was not the last time that happened

Totally the type to love getting matching pj bottoms with you

Really loves it when you hold his hand with both of yours

It makes him feel really loved and masculine in a good healthy way and generally good

On days when he just Needs a Distraction you try any hobby or activity you can get your hands on

His favorites so far are painting each others nails, random online flash games like papa’s, finding the best climbing trees (weather permitting), and binge watching and reviewing the weirdest shows and movies you can find

Including but not limited to flava of love, josie and the pussycats in outer space, lightning point, and clone high

The movies are usually really low budget, or questionable teen romance movies like twilight, sierra burgess is a loser, the kissing booth etc. 

You still quote clone high to this day

TJ has no fucking idea what he’s talking about

He really likes just kind of hugging you from behind and smooching wherever he can and swaying back and forth

analysing timber spruce time

i don't know if this was intentional or not but i wanna talk about it

so here we have the description of timber's cameo in this short:

i don't think timber is "slightly cowardly" by nature. lemme elaborate.

so, remember what timber did when gloriosa trapping the students?

he runs, grabs his axe and tries to get the students out.

he isn't depicted as cowardly here, in a very serious situation.

keep in mind that timber doesn't have a fucking clue as to what is going on.

his sister apparently found these geodes that can do magic(????) and she's been using them to make this the chs students' best week at camp ever before filthy rich can come and take their land that belongs to the both of them. then, under her increasing stress, she goes and gets the last two geodes that transform her into, essentially, gaea everfree.

but he still goes to help the campers. that's not cowardly. that's not a timber spruce trait we see in legend of everfree. sure, unsolved selfie mysteries can be just showing more insight to his character but why is it that he gets scared at a potential sea monster when he's literally been through this? when he's seen his sister turn into a demon?

trauma.

trauma can lead people to react to even the smallest of things that remind them of what happened before. demon gloriosa vs. "sea monster". timber screaming and hiding behind twilight – and if you focus on him through that part of the short, the boy closes his eyes and shakes – can be seen as a response to what happened at camp everfree.

sci twi has powers and timber knows this, he's literally seen it. she can save people. timber can't do anything. he has tried to before but that led him to being trapped by his own sister. no way is his traumatised mind letting him help again in magic situations when that happened to him. that's probably why he hid behind twilight.

what happens in screenshot 2 isn't uncommon either and it actually fits timber's character. timber has never told anyone "when i was 10 i wanted to sell the camp to go live in the city". it doesn't seem like he's entirely open abt things that make him slightly vulnerable or stuff that's personal to him. trauma is not even "slightly", it is vulnerable state, it is personal.

timber whistling, blushing and looking away could be him trying to sweep his response under the rug and move the attention off himself. the "oh shit how did i let that slip, quick, act normal". that makes sense. maybe timber even did that to be funny, because he does that. try to be funny. perhaps he does it to hide whatever is going on inside his head.

and you know, people do exactly what timber did. there are times where people see stuff that reminds them of their trauma and they respond suddenly, then, if they don't want to talk abt it, they don't. they change the subject, they brush it off.

twilight's reaction is kinda interesting to me. it does make me a little uncomfortable after realising this could have been a trauma response from timber but this could also suggest more abt the point i previously mentioned. twilight may not know what timber's going through. because if she did, she of all people would know how it feels and wouldn't have reacted like that to him. so maybe she doesn't know, maybe timber hasn't told her. that leads us back to my last point that timber doesn't like being vulnerable.

there can be many reasons as to why that's the case. i like to think it's because he's had to grow up fast. you know this point, i've brought it up many times.

he's the younger child. it's common for them to be a lot more vulnerable when it comes to family matters, especially if they're a teenager. but due to his parents' death, he might have thought him being vulnerable and having raw moments of sadness/grief/etc is not going to help gloriosa. growing up fast goes against what should happen, it speeds up a process that shouldn't be sped up. maturity is different for everyone and forcing it isn't good. if sped up, you can get reprocussions or side effects. this might be it.

but yeah, i'm definitely convinced timber's response here was not one out of natural cowardice but bc of his trauma. it makes sense why he would be scared, even if it turns out not to be anything scary. he's young and had to take in a lot of stuff at once, like magic existing and trying to figure out if it's bad or not, and then the climax of LoE.

i don't know, it's just something i noticed and i hope you guys can see what i mean!! it might be that i went way too far into his character but i won't turn down the possibilities. i am a writer, after all.

(people should also stop making fun of him for it, self explanatory. but that is a rant for another day lol.)

anyways, i love timber and want to give him the biggest hug :(
