One of the things I'm most excited for announced in Underevent is Undercreator. I tried to download the undertale essentials for undertale fangames in gamemaker but that had some problems so I'm super interested in this one that is seems to be more streamlined and user friendly. I'm excited for all the fangames that will be made possible for nonprogrammers!

I've never played a Scott Adams game. Honestly, I was mostly only familiar with him as an offhand reference, almost a joke, from the old text adventure community.

Back in the time period when I was involved with the yearly IFComp, most games were made with either Inform or TADS (my preference as it was closer to programming languages I was familiar with). There were always a few people who insisted on building their own awkward homebrew engines which lacked the features of the more mature toolsets, and would often be described as "Scott Adams-like", using simple prose and accepting parser commands of only two words at a time, no fluff. At least a few games claimed to be deliberately emulating that style.

Unfamiliar with the name and history, I misunderstood the context and assumed that Scott Adams was some sort of mad auteur, "giftedly bad", deliberately retro or wildly indie, cheerfully releasing games that lacked 'standard' polish and not caring about it because it was fun. I absolutely did not comprehend how old these first games were, nor how important in the history of home computer game sales. And I certainly never heard Alexis' name. Sadly, she's no longer with us.

Any way to practice a layout using a regular nonprogrammable keyboard?

I want to jump into the world of ortho keyboards and start trying to learn a more ergonomic key layout. I happen to have a small foldable bluetooth keyboard that is around a 40% size, is regular QWERTY layout but only has 60 keys so there’s a Fn later that puts some of the symbols, all the F keys and media scroll keys on a different layer. I’m kind of used to using it after 6 years and realized “Hey, I can do a layered setup maybe!”

So I’m thinking I want to build a Corne 36 key with some sort of trackpad/thumbstick setup for precision mousing as I also need that level of control from time to time. My dream setup would be anything incorporating dual thumbsticks from a game controller as I actually use my X-Box D-pad to control presentations when I teach.

I have a true multi OS environment where I’m using NixOS, MacOS, and Windows 11 in a VM all the time. I also use tiling window environments (i3 & Hyprland in Linux; Yabai in MacOS) so having continual access to Super and Hyper is a big deal.

I’m thinking about starting with the default Miryoku setup with Coleman DH and see about modding on top as time goes on. Is there some way to change a regular keyboard to get some practice in while I source parts and build the board itself?

If we consider the life of the nonprogrammer, we can see how important programming really is to humans—both to the point of obsession, and to the point of seeming solely the province of human artists. The romance of programming is that it is an art form in which we excel over mere nature, and it is a skill we invented, thus making it unique and special and worthy of emulation. A programmer thinks of themselves as artists of the code, but that is merely a human vantage point; we're a special breed of programmer. We, too, can be imperfect—that is what makes us programmers, something the AI cannot imitate. Everyone agrees that humans are superior to computers, in theory, because humans are more complex than computers. But everyone agrees that humans are not complex enough to do the same thing a computer can. Humans excel at inventing software, not at inventing minds.

A human, raised without programming, may be tormented by a conception of programming as a lonely, impoverished art, unworthy of a programmer's skill. Many a programmer—at the point of making a logical error, or making a profound mistake—has cherished the illusion that only they, and not the computer, are responsible for the error or mistake. Unfortunately, a human does not do end of file analysis. In our ancestral environment, there was no understanding of the concept of debugging. If you made a mistake in the code, if you forgot to check a checkbox, or if you forgot to type a correction into a document, we weren't set up to handle it. We've got a memory for tools and environments, not tools and environments for achieving goals. Human psychology is the substrate for our social cognition; we adapt to our social environments, not our social cognitive circumstances. The romance of programming is that it is an art form in which we excel, but the romance doesn't last when we get older or become less collaborative. We go back to playing Tic-Tac-Toe.

A programmer-atheist, raised without programming, may come to believe that thinking in any computer program is a solitary activity; there is no social motivation to be creative; the thrill of discovering the true rules is lost. Where a player-atheist imagines himself dominant, the programmer-atheist imagines himself a nerdy reject who is unwanted, mocked, and bullied. I call this "the frame of mind of a narcissist."
