#swapitsaturday  - Bulk Teas

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again (and probably like 100 more times, so you’ve been warned): zero wasting doesn’t happen overnight.  Zero wasting doesn’t mean throwing out all the plastic in your home to get chic stainless steel replacements.  It doesn’t mean immediately running out to get the latest in zero waste fashion and trashing your perfectly fine wardrobe in one fell swoop so your clothes scream “ZERO WASTE!!!” as you strut down the sidewalk. Zero waste means taking care of what you’ve got, using up what you have and buying smarter in the future.  I am not zero waste... yet.  But I’m getting there.  A major milestone came a few weeks ago when we swapped out our tall trash can for a small, bathroom-sized can because we are producing MUCH less trash than we were a year ago. 

I attribute the progress we’ve been making towards zero waste to the fact that we have been taking baby steps instead of overwhelming ourselves by trying to do it all at once.  But part of the “baby steps” we’ve been taking has meant keeping an eye on the trash we have been producing and figuring out ways to eliminate that waste. Lately, one of the most prominent elements of actual trash in our waste bin has been foil-lined tea bag wrappers, which are unfortunately non-biodegradable and non-recyclable.  I love me my herbal teas, but I bought packages of these tea bags awhile ago and decided to use up what I had (despite the wasteful packaging) as it was better than just trashing the whole lot.  (NOTE:  Some companies actually infuse plastic into their tea bags which is yet another source of non-biodegradable waste to be aware of and a compelling reason to switch to bulk teas for both environmental and health reasons). Well I finally finished off my wastefully packaged tea bags and I’m free to buy bulk tea to my zero wasting heart’s content and I’m so pleased!  I went to our health food store earlier this week and stocked up on some of my favorites: loose leaf green tea (coffee tends to be a bit too much for me, but I buy it in bulk for DH), lemon balm and cardamon pods to mix with dandelion leaf tea for a spicy (and healthy!) treat.  Our local store didn’t have my other must-have, holy basil, so I ordered it in bulk online, which was also cheaper than buying the individually packaged teabags and MUCH less wasteful (though the bulk packaging leaves something to be desired).  

I store my teas in little canning jars and use a stainless steel tea infuser and, let me just tell you, my tea cupboard looks hecka pretty now that all that silly packaging is gone.  Win-win!

So we’re not zero waste yet, but this simple swap has eliminated a significant source of the remaining non-biodegradable trash we’ve been producing (tea bag wrappers, tea bag staples and coffee bags).  Our only tea and coffee waste now (loose leaf tea and coffee grounds) are entirely compostable.  Yay!

Apple Pancake Recipe!

Hello all!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a recipe but I’ve got a super delicious and fun one for y’all today. It only takes a few ingredients which you probably have at home and it’s a 100% whole, plant-based meal that was easily made zero waste. Here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredients (serves 2) 1.5 cups rolled oats 1 ripe banana 1 cup of water or non-dairy milk (I used homemade sunflower seed milk!) 1 apple Optional: cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, and any other toppings

Method Start by adding the oats, banana and liquid to a blender (as well as any spices or vanilla) and blend until smooth. Once that’s done, heat up a pan to about medium heat. While waiting for that, slice your apple horizontally into fairly thin slices - you’ll want at least 6 good ones.  Next, add some coconut oil to the pan, a few apple slices, and pour the pancake batter over the apple rings so they’re fully covered. Cook for around 5 minutes, or until the edges are fully cooked, and flip. Cook for 2-3 more minutes or until set. Continue until you’ve used up all the batter. Now serve it up! Top it with homemade jam, nut butter, sweetener, fruit or anything else that you like! I topped mine with some homemade granola and fresh ground peanut butter.

This is a really fun breakfast that’s perfect for the weekend. All the ingredients I used were found in bulk so it was totally waste free - enjoy!

So ... Plastikverpackung hin, So genannte „Bio-Produkte“ vom anderen Ende der Welt, Tierschändung in der Fleischindustrie her ... Blabla irgendwas dunkle Seite Blabla ... 😄. TACHILIS!!! Ich war gestern unterwegs und habe ein paar Bauernläden, hier bei uns direkt um die Ecke besucht. Ich muss sagen, ich bin sehr angetan. Natürlich kosten viele Dinge wesentlich mehr. Wie soll der Bauer um die Ecke mit dem Supermarkt-Globalisierungs-Preisdumpingwahn auch mithalten können?! Bei vielen Sachen bin ich aber auch wirklich überrascht gewesen, dass sie eben gar nicht so viel teurer sind, als vielleicht gedacht! Dafür kann ich mir aber sicher sein, das mein Einkauf nicht um die halbe Welt kutschiert wurde, frisch ist, nicht die halbe Umgebung Ihrer Bodenressourcen beklaut hat, keine Menschen in die Sklaverei getrieben hat und die Tierprodukte nicht aus bis zum geht nicht mehr ausgesaugten und recycelten 🙄😄 ... Tieren hergestellt wurden. Und zum Thema Plastikverpackung ... ja ... seht Ihr ja ... 😄👍. Also wer diese ganzen Themen, die ja momentan in den Medien halbtotgetrampelt werden, wirklich richtig angehen möchte ... der sollte vielleicht mal drüber nachdenken, ob lokal Kaufen (und damit meine ich NICHT den Supermarkt um die Ecke 😄) nicht doch irgendwie Sinn macht 😉. Wenn wir das, was geht bei den locals holen und den Rest im Supermarkt, ist schon viiiiiel gewonnen. Ich für meinen Teil bin nun wieder ein ganzes Stückchen schlauer. Man lernt eben nie aus 😇🤙.
