"Hail and well met, my Lord Nornorë." Tinwë stood before the herald of the Elder King and offered a low bow out of respect. "We meet once more."

"Hail and well met, Lord Tinwë," Nornorë acknowledged him with a graceful tilt of the head. "Or should I say, King Thingol?"

Tinwë flushed. Whether it was from pride or shame, Nornorë could not say. 

"Thingol. It is a name I have not heard since... since my lady wife took me into her arms for the last time." Tinwë paused, then hesitated. "Is she here, my lord?” He peered down winding pathways and into every thick and shaded copse he could see, all in the hopes of finding his wife. “My lady, I mean."

"She waits for you in the gardens down yonder." Nornorë turned down a path lined with Larinquë trees full of golden blossoms and urged Tinwë to join him. "Come. Let me take you to her."

They walked in companionable silence before Tinwë finally said, "The attendants of Lord Mandos said the world had changed since I walked it last. They said the mighty woods of the Great Lands are now a shadow of what they used to be."

"Indeed." Nornore welled up with sorrow. His eyes slowly burned with many an unshed tear. "The War of Wrath brought with it the ruin of a great many things. Even entire families were destroyed, root and stem. Do you remember our first meeting?"

"I do," Tinwë replied, and looked around. "It was by a lake, beneath a starry sky. We were frightened, all of us. We thought you served him, and we tried to hide ourselves."

"Do not fear to utter his name, Lord Tinwë," Nornorë counseled. "He cannot set foot in the Blessed Realm, not anymore."

Tinwë nodded and continued. "Then you soothed our fears and revealed your purpose. We followed you. We saw with our own eyes the glory of this land and returned to speak of it to our kin. We urged them to see it for themselves."

"And then you lost your way." Nornorë smiled. 

Tinwë's smile was a reflection of his. "And then I lost my way. But I do not regret it, my lord, not for a moment."

"I thought you were gonna put me in a bunad," Iceland whined.

"Anything I want means anything I want," Norway said, rifling through a box in his bedroom closet. "It's my Constitution Day."

"Fine, but I'm not going outside like that."

"Yes you are."

"No, I'm certainly not!"

"It's my Constitution Day," Norway repeated.

"When I said anything, I didn't mean you could try to humiliate me and I'd let you do it. I'm taking it back. I'll go along with anything you want today, within reason."

"What if I really want to see you walk around my capital with cat ears and a tail?" Norway chided.

"I'd say you're sick in the head." Iceland glared at his brother.

Norway looked over at one of his pet cats stretched out happily on his bed beside Iceland. She looked up at Norway and trilled happily. "What do you have against cats, Eiki?"

"Nothing! Why do you want me to look like a cat so bad?" Eiríkur was getting heated now, a blush rose on his face. "It's weird, I'm not doing it."

"I'll wear cat ears with you." Norway offered. "We can match."

"Er," Iceland said, fidgeting. "Wouldn't that look more weird? Two grown men dressed like cats?"

"It's a parade, Eiki. People dress up."

"Not me. I'm not wearing cat ears outside, not ever."

Norway sighed. "You don't have to wear them out then, I'm not trying to humiliate you."

"Like hell you aren't."

Norway rolled his eyes. He threw a headband with black and white patchy furry car ears attached at his brother. "It's not that serious, and you're still gonna wear them for me."

Iceland fumbled to catch the ears. "What is this about, some new trend? Your newest hobby? I don't get it, Nore."

"I think you'd look cute," He said simply.

Iceland glowered.

Nornorë is an individual that belongs to the “Lost Valar” category of characters, only appearing in some of Tolkien’s earliest works. He was the Vala who was the messenger and herald of the Valar, and also had an important role in the afterlife of humans. 

Nornorë was the Vala who was sent to invite the elves to come to Aman and reside with the Valar there. He brought the three elven ambassadors to Aman, and upon their return they convinced most of their brethren to make the journey. Prior to this, he assisted the Valar in capturing and chaining Melkor by taking advantage of Melkor’s pride. When the Valar marched out to Utumno to confront Melkor, Nornorë was granted entrance to deliver a message to Melkor. Nornorë told him that the Valar had realized he was more powerful than them and had come to bow down before him, and Melkor believed him and allowed them to enter his halls. Once inside, the Valar were able to capture Melkor and take him back to Aman. 

Nornorë’s name comes from a Qenya (early version of Quenya) root meaning “to run smoothly”, and Gnomish (early term for Noldorin) versions of this name were Drondor and Dronúrin. He was also given the Qenya names Kapalimor (from root for leaping or bounding; Gnomish Cablin) and Vastor (from root for rush of noise or speed).

In Tolkien’s early stages, the Vala Fui-Nienna was much more dark and grim and had a role of a death goddess, being the one who judged the souls of humans while Mandos (her husband in this version instead of her brother) judged the souls of elves. Some she would send to the Halls of Mandos, while others would be taken by a black ship called Mornië (darkness, blackness) to a place called Arvalin (the Shadows) in the southeast of Aman. This was a dark, gloomy strip of land at the feet of the Pelori Mountains and was said to have been where Ungoliant lived before the theft of the Silmarils and the Darkening of Valinor. But Nornorë would select some of these souls and instead bring them to live in Valimar in eternal peace and happiness.  

These characteristics make Nornorë Tolkien’s version of the messenger gods that appear in many world mythologies, such as Hermes, Iris, Mercury, Hermodr, and Ninshubur. Many of these messenger gods and goddesses are also psychopomps, meaning that they guide the souls of the dead to the afterlife.  Nornorë also has similarities with the angels of the Abrahamic religions; one of the words for angels is mal’akh (messenger) and they are strongly connected to the afterlife. 

For unknown reasons Nornorë didn’t make it into Tolkien’s final works. His role as herald of the Valar is given to the Maia Eönwë, and Oromë is the one who brings first the elven ambassadors and later the elven hosts to Aman. Tolkien also changed his description of what happens to human souls after they die to make it known only to Eru Illuvatar. Thus, the souls don’t go to any place in Aman and there is no need to sort them out, so there is no need for any psychopomp figure.
