I know I’ve said this many times in the past four years but it does make me insane that. Like obviously the greatest thing about black (this perception kind of bleeds over to hilbert) as a character, his greatest strength, is how convicted in his passions he is. He cares so much about his passions, he cares so much about other people to the point it’s a fault, and that’s part of why I relate to him so strongly. and the thing they choose to demonstrate that at the most crucial point in the story isn’t his pokemon, it isn’t his desire to win, it’s another person. and it’s so strong it turns everything around. it is the power that allows him to win, awaken reshiram. for someone who was conditioned to think of that trait of myself of that as a flaw, that was very important for me.

So Love in the Air.  Final Thoughts

I was lured into trying this show because people were saying that Payu and Rain were a younger Vegaspete and I’m desperate for more Vegaspete in my life. 

And, there were definitely moments in their story had a spark, but mostly I wasn’t that into it.  Rain was just impossible to understand, since his defining characteristic seems to be “complete idiot.”  And Payu is basically just “horny”  and then “horny for this one guy in particular.”  IDK.  Didn’t ultimately really work for me.  I found their scenes superior in gif form than video form, which, is just not great.

And I was gonna quit watching the show cause I was bored and then it switched to Sky and Prapai and I was sucked in despite myself.  Those two totally won me over with the combo tragic backstory and utter sweetness.  And yeah they made me feel things.

The storyline isn’t beyond reproach and while I find “rape recovery” a compelling struggle for a romance, the actual backstory itself has some questionable writing.  The last ep was definitely hard to watch and extremely likely to trigger people.  I wish it didn’t have to go that far or have that much on screen. 

But I have to say I LOVE the scenes after it and thought both actors killed it.  Like, IDK, these are the kinds of conversations couples HAVE, yanno, the here let me tell you my trauma and why I’m fucked up and, yeah, it’s nice to have that onscreen in a healing way.  (I mean whether anyone finds it such is up to them, totally gonna vary.)

So yeah, IDK.  Do I recommend this show?  I have no idea.  If it’s your thing you probably already watched it.  I think it’s about a 5/10 for me.  If it had just been the second half it would be higher, maybe a 7.  Which I feel mean about saying, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

as funny as it is to say, "there's no such thing as a fish" is not actually true

"science doesn't know what a fish is" is really not true

"fish" is not a monophyletic category. there is no common ancestor of everything that we call a "fish," and none of the things that we don't

"fish" is a paraphyletic category -- and a useful one! marine biologists use it! "fish" describes a general body plan and lifestyle. it is useful to be able to talk about coelacanths and tuna in a shared category, though coelacanths are more closely related to us than to tuna.

where this bugs me is the repetition of the idea that "scientists" are hidebound and uncreative, unable to comprehend anything that doesn't conform to a specific idea of categorization -- when this is fundamentally untrue! we know perfectly well what a "fish" is. the fact that it's a paraphyletic group is only confounding to pop science, as a funny factoid, not to anyone who actually understands what a paraphyletic group is.
