at a certain point i think that the people on here who insist on making destiel confession meme format posts about every single news story that ever breaks need to perhaps consider if using said meme format is really appropriate or not in the context of the individual news stories they are using it for. just thinking

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Posting more for myself because for better or worse this Tumblr has become an online personal journal of my entire twenties and thirties. I've been driving my 2011 Mazda since I bought it new for about thirteen years now, and after a spate of issues in the past year I knew it's time was coming to an end:
My stereo system crapped out in the summer of 2016 and I've been driving in silence ever since
Perpetual leak in the rear passenger tire was giving me a low tire pressure warning about once every other week (more often in the winter) so I was constantly topping it off
The entire chassis rattled violently when I decelerated coming off of a highway and into an exit
A really loud screeching sound rang out whenever I accelerated uphill and was going between 40-50 mph
The rear driver side wheelwell had a gnarly rattle on anything but the smoothest of roads
Part of the dashboard literally melted and separated from the rest of the car
Rear-view mirror was warped
etc. etc.
A lot of this stemmed from an incident in late '22 when I went too long without getting an oil change, which seized the engine and led to a really long process to get a replacement engine installed. When I learned that full electric cars didn't need oil changes and had less maintenance overall, that got my attention and kinda guided my decision towards considering one for my next car.
After doing honestly about 6 months of research on EVs, numerous cost-benefit analyses across multiple spreadsheets, looking at future long-term plans of individual companies and agonizing over the options, I finally settled on a 2024 Hyundai Kona. I also lucked out with a helpful salesman who actually wanted to sell it to me (a lot of the dealers I'd previously went to during this process clam up and get weird about EVs), because he drives an Ioniq 5 for himself.
I dropped off my old car to pick up the new one tonight, and of course I got emotional on the last drive over, I mean I had that car for over a third of my life! Had to run to the bathroom and compose myself as soon as we got to the dealership, but writing that deposit check sobered me right up real quick.
Anyway, now I'm driving around a car that feels like a fucking spaceship. Let's see if I drive this one 'til the wheels fall off too.

If Tolkien characters had Tumblr blogs part 2:
part 1
Finduilas:
url: waitingtothewind
pfp: drawing of a fictional crush in pastel colours (babygirl fulfills her royal duty to exercise patronage over artists by comissioning reams of fanart lol)
bio: ✧˖・* princess finduilas of nargothrond :) ✧˖・* 47 ✧˖・* poetry appreciator ✧˖・* romantic at heart ✧˖・* girl of many fandoms ✧˖・* favourite animal: doggos ✧˖・* favourite food: strawberry juice ✧˖・* and if I had a voice that could make mountains melt I would walk over stars just to see how it felt ✧˖・*
title: ₓ˚. ୭ ˚○◦˚.˚◦○˚ ୧ .˚ₓ
has a very pink custom theme with a fancy font. runs a fandom/aesthetic blog and stays clear of discourse. writes really good meta that is quite popular and poems that get notes in the single digits. doesn't really know how to deal with anon hate. participates in every tag game she comes across.
Maeglin:
url: keeps changing it between @molelol and @twilitdark because he likes small animals, but wants to sound edgy.
pfp: keeps changing it between a baby mole and the kind of very dark photo where you can't really see what it's supposed to be.
bio: M / not a minor
title: the dark under the trees
guards his personal info incredibly closely (a good practice, but how much of it is due to his father having been so controlling that he learned secrecy early on is up for discussion). rarely posts, mostly reblogs photos and shitposts. vaguely vents about his idril/tuor/gondolin/treason problems. when he gets into discussions with people he can be uncomfortably fierce, has sent anon hate on occasion.
Celebrimbor:
url: craftingsilver
pfp: red eight pointed star (default variation, not technically fëanorian) on yellow background
bio: older/younger than you think | look I've seen the Trees that's enough | Noldorin jewelsmith | male
title: time and soul, wrought and tempered
mostly posts and reblogs crafting tiktoks and tips, sometimes adds a dash of science, philosophy or something personal. has made a resolution to filter out any posts pertaining to his family on his dashboard and keeps to it almost till the end. shows a strong sense of humour and has gathered quite a following.
Idril:
url: celebrin-does-things
pfp: blurred photo of her with her back to the camera
bio: 500s - architect, wife and mother - everyone is welcome
title: "ammë, there's winter in my boots"
started off as a miscellaneous blog, but shifted to being mostly about Eärendil's shenanigans. she vaguely vents about maeglin/gondolin/cousin's treason sometimes, but still comes off as way more laid back than irl. hardly used her tumblr before her son was born and still treats it mostly as a place to document things he has said + a way to talk with like three treasured mutuals. the architect part in bio is mostly a ruse because she has only ever completed one or two projects but can hardly reveal she's a princess, can she? (before the fall of nargothrond if she got on tumblr it was to nag Finduilas to remove her personal info from bio hah)
@eri-pl, this is in part because you asked (a while ago, sorry), though I'm afraid I don't have much to say about all your suggestions. I prefer not to get into Sauron's headspace actually, but the idea of him having access to social media is horrifying lol. And Pharazon has all the worst characteristics of Reddit atheists, non-ironic modern white supremacists and racist trolls rolled into one with the added horror of the new unsavoury state cult. Míriel is not allowed a sim card🙁😬
also I'm just now realising I tagged a compatriot in something I wrote at 3 am so if you have time stamps on you now know my messed up sleep schedule and if you don't I've just told you lol but never mind.

Goodbye.
I’ve been thinking about this for a long time and, I’m making the decision to leave tumblr.
Please see below the ‘read more’ for more info.
What does this mean for my blog?
Originally, I was going to delete everything but I love those who support me and read my work and I can’t do that to you guys. All of my stories will remain but nothing will be updated.
Will you return?
No. I will be logging out once I take care of some things.
What does this mean for your other blogs?
@hermarcelline - my main will remain inactive. @dawnagustd - archived @babecoups - archived @sevn-reads - will be deleted @badgalsgetinfree - archived for credit/sources purposes
What about your collabs?
War of Love (bts collab) - canceled MILFs in Vegas (bts collab) - canceled Industry Babies (multi collab) - canceled  Born to Sin (multi collab) - canceled Project X (jackson wang party au collab) - canceled
How can I be reached?
I thought about making another blog for just chatting but I have no desire to see certain people on my dashboard again. Besides, I don’t really know who to trust.
Note:
Thanks for everything. This has truly been an experience I’ll never forget. I’m grateful for every good person I’ve come across, and I hate to leave so suddenly. But I can’t deal with some people. There's so much fake and toxic energy within this community and I’m just done. I have lost respect for some people and I have no desire to stick around and act like what they’ve done hasn’t rubbed me wrong.
I can’t force myself to coexist with those people. Staying would require me to do that. And I just can’t. Not without making things awkward for others because I won’t even pretend like I’m cool with someone if I’m not.
I’m sorry for leaving like this and I wanted to write this message when I was thinking more positively so I can end it with good vibes. But things change and I’m just ready to leave this behind me. I’ll be here until the weekend and then I’m going on vacation. I think it’s best if I log off then and never return.
I hope you can find closer with this message. If not, I’ll try to answer your questions until it’s time for me to go. I will create a navigation post for my blogs so people can find things easily after I leave.
I’m going to writing and interacting with you all but this isn’t a sad moment for me. I’m finally able to breathe fresh air. I hope you guys know how much I tried to stick around for you, but it’s not worth setting myself back.
I love you guys. Please don’t think this decision is a negative one or done because of something someone said to me. This is only a chapter I’m ending. Trust, I have many more.💕

relevant links!
daily clicks for palestine

spreadsheet of gofundmes to evacuate families
fundraiser for esims for gaza
orgs to donate to
if you still feel hesitant about where to donate, consider donating to Mohammed Alanqer, husband to Enas Majed and father to 4 children, one of them newborn.
As of 23/8/24, they've reached €57,305 of €58,000 goal. they're very close!!
NOW, onto other things->
HI, I go by Isaac! Welcome to fandom-trash-goblin, where i do my best to tag stuff. You'll find many, many, many fandoms here <3. Including, but not limited to SVSSS, MDZS, ORV, other Danmei, some random books i'm reading, BBC Merlin, ASOIAF, HOTD and tonnes of other fandoms that come on my dashboard, i really can't recall.
Tell me if you need something tagged, usually i tag triggering stuff like sexual abuse, rape, child abuse etc. I don't believe in censoring these words, sorry. FORMAT-> #tw (stuff to be warned for)
If you're having a not so nice day, check out #advice for a bad day. people on tumblr can be really wise sometimes. somewhere between ao3 worship and slash shipping.
Few other of my favourite tags here -> 1. #lovely stuff, #funny stuff 2. #stories 3. #fave 4. #tumblr ; #how to tumblr ; #tumblr archive 5. #internet; #firefox; #tech stuff.
Here, I should tell you that you will come across posts that preach about our lord and saviour Firefox. I am a firm believer.
I have a tendency to like, and put reblog posts in my queue, so unless you have a message declaring not to do so on your blog, you will find me in your notifications, most of which will be queued instead of immediately reblogged unless there's like a poll, or fundraiser and the like.
As a rule, I don't reblog personal posts unless they've got more than 25 notes, and if i really, really need to, I'll send an ask or a message. After 25 notes, it's free game.
Still, feel free to tell me not to browse further, and also if you want me to delete any posts, i promise to do so if it's reasonable.
I also immediately follow any/all gimmick blogs, people with interesting (fandom or otherwise) URLs, and also people who comprehensively tag everything, which is how i find blogs and posts I'd never come across otherwise.
Adding to that i follow people who have pretty tags and cool commentary!
Again, feel free to reach out to me and ask me not to, because i often don't see DNIs in a spree.
If you're here for the webweaves, check out the tag #*mine: graphics. I don't post them often, but eh.
If you're here from AO3, go to @yitzvah, it's where you'll get update if any !!!
LAYOUT: ICON Credit to @/nemfrog, on this post, and Header Credit to @/girasois, from this post
BIGOTS, RACISTS, SUPREMACISTS, XENOPHOBES, (Gender/Sex)-PHOBES really not welcome. Feel free to turn back, and especially don't tag/comment your rhetoric on posts reblogged/written by me, I WILL AND I ALREADY HAVE BLOCKED & REPORTED SEVERAL PEOPLE.
cheers, have a nice day <3

This is just a rant about a post that’s come across my dashboard and I rather not engage with it , so I’m making my own post
I really don’t think Rayman has DID based on what we’ve seen of season one. The mirror scene is often brought up as “proof” he has the condition. But people with DID often have memory issues as the personalities have different experiences and hold onto different memories from one another , in some cases people aren’t even aware they have different personalities (especially if they’re not getting help) and when the personalities switch, the person has no idea it even happened and won’t remember anything from that time (correct me I’m not an expert and it can vary from person to person).
Rayman hasn’t been shown to struggle with any of those aspects, even when making the “switch” to Ramon he still not only remembers, but he has the same personality as he was as Rayman. The only real difference is as “Rayman” he was a celebrity who’s main role was being a propaganda machine, while as “Ramon” he realised the truth about what he was actually doing and wanted to put a stop to it. Ramon is still caring and wants to do the right thing (especially for children and minorities) , he’s the same person just putting on a new “act” , rather than having an actual personality switch.
plus, “talking to your inner self/past self through a mirror” isn’t just a trope associated with characters with split personalities. It can (and more often is) also be used for a character to self reflect and look back on their past actions , which I think the mirror scene was actually about. Ramon arguing with Rayman was him arguing with himself on what to do , rather than Ramon and Rayman being separate people in his mind.
Season two could very well confirm he has DID or a similar condition but we haven’t seen it yet, and I don’t think we should call Adi ableist for something that’s just a headcanon more than anything else , as of now at the very least.
Saying that Dolph is a “self insert power trip” for Adi and Adi is just using Rayman as a “stepping stone”……..Is certainly something of a claim.
The two are very clearly narrative foils of one another and claiming Rayman only exists in this show to hype Dolph up is a shallow interpretation of both their characters and the story as a whole. You can obviously like Rayman while disliking Dolph and vice versa , but this is like saying characters like Vegeta or Riku are just "stepping stones" to hype up the protagonist. Narrative foils are important to the plot as individuals and how their similarities connects back to the themes. In the case of Captain Laserhawk, Dolph and Rayman are both victims of being exploited by the system of Eden and were used to hurt vulnerable people.
Not to mention it comes across like Adi "secretly" wrote a self insert fanfic in an existing franchise with an established lore, when Captain Laserhawk is very blatantly a remix using Ubisoft properties to make its own universe and rules. Captain Laserhawk does not shy away from the fact it’s an else world fanfic, it embraces its identity as such shamelessly and with no attempts to argue against it.
Like, Adi never hid the fact that Dolph was a self insert. He even had to tell people on twitter Dolph was Indian and not black, that’s how unashamed he is of Dolph being his character. People don’t have to like Dolph as a character and Captain Laserhawk is not a show for everyone but complaining that Dolph is Adi’s anime oc is like going into a anime convention and being shocked there’s anime fans there, you literally walked into the realm of anime dweebs.
It’s even in the title? It’s “Captain Laserhawk: a blood dragon remix” not “Rayman: a Blood dragon remix!”. It was very obvious from the beginning this show was never going to solely be about Rayman. Rayman fans were just lucky Rayman was more than just a cameo character , but most of us would’ve been happy if that’s all he was as prior advertising for Captain Laserhawk barely focused on Rayman’s existence in the narrative.
I know most people interested in this show prior to release were Rayman fans and they still remain the dominant in the fandom , but as a Rayman fan myself? I think people focus way too much on him (and Bullfrog) while ignoring everything else going on, sometimes it can even be detrimental to Rayman’s character itself when those other characters and elements are ignored.
Dolph being a “self insert” of Adi isn’t a “red flag”, especially when the only thing they really have in common is their nationality. I’m not gonna claim to know Adi as a person but based on some Google searching, he clearly wasn’t raised as a cybernetic super soldier. There’s aspects of Dolph’s worth talking about (both positive and negative) without making the bold statement a “self insert” is bad writing ,especially if you’re not gonna bring anything up about Adi as a person into the conversation to compare.
Most stories are self inserts or are in some way the artist inserting aspects of themselves in the story, even unintentionally. I know there are cases where the creator is just being shallow and/or spiteful (such as “I am not starefire”) but generally an artist inserting themselves in their works is not inherently a negative element of the work in question. Is this a complaint one would have towards Star Wars? If not, I’m curious what the difference between Lucas and Adi are?
Btw I struggle to understand how anyone looked at Dolph’s story and thought “power fantasy” when:
He is an orphan who was raised in the streets and later taken from his own mother by Eden
Was experimented on and dehumanised his whole life to be a super soldier for Eden
When Dolph no longer wanted to hurt innocent people and tried leaving the military, Eden branded him as a traitor to be hunted down
Gets groomed by the first man who Dolph felt safe with at the age of 18
Groomer/Boyfriend later shoots him in the chest just as Dolph thought they were about to leave Eden forever and live a peaceful life
He finds Alex sleeping with another man several days after the fact
Dolph anger and desire for revenge unintentionally got several people killed, including people like Jade who were trying to help him and who would’ve been a positive influence in his life
Kills Alex in an attempt to avoid having Alex ever hurting him again and immediately after doing that, tried killing himself
Is betrayed again by Sarah this time and actually successfully kills himself in an attempt to take Sarah down with him
How is any of any of that a “power trip self fulfilment fantasy”? Is there proof of Adi being a masochist?

Hey sorry reddit refugee with a quick question, I dont really identify with the super-fandom side of tumblr. A lot of my feeds get a lot of random like (character)x(character) fanfics and I'm wondering if there are a few common tags i could block to minimize seeing them?
Hey there, welcome to tumblr! Sorry if I tell you something you already know but I think this info is really important for curating your experience here.
While tumblr does have an option for a feed based on an algorithm, I’d say like 90% of users don’t use it. We use the “following” option, which shows only posts from people you follow, in the chronological order they were posted—with no additional posts chosen by an algorithm. If you’re on mobile it looks like this.
Tumblr media
I just wanted to make sure you knew about this because if you are not interested in seeing certain kinds of content, I’d say the best way to not see it is to not follow people who post it a lot. Fill your dashboard with content you enjoy by following people who post the kinds of things you like.
That being said, of course no one is gonna share your taste 100% and the people you follow will likely post about things you don’t care about. Blacklisting tags will definitely help with that. People usually tag fandom posts with the fandom name or an abbreviation for it. so for example if you don’t want to see posts about the owl house you could block the tags #the owl house and #toh. (Also, if that’s the case, you should probably unfollow me, since I post about that a lot lol.)
Most shippers use a specific ship name, usually a combo of the two characters’ names, so figure out what it is and block it if you don’t want to see that ship. So for example, #zelink for zelda x link. I think that’s a much more common way of tagging ships here than character x character or character/character.
When you come across a post you don’t like, it might be helpful to check how the reblogged or the op tagged it and then block those specific tags.
If you don’t know how to block tags on mobile:
Tap the person icon on the bottom right of the screen. Then tap the gear icon on the top right. Go to general settings > filtering and add each individual tag you want to block. (On desktop I recommend downloading XKit—it has a lot of helpful customization options.)
There really isn’t a way to guarantee you don’t see any shipping fanfic posts on your dashboard in general, but again, if you don’t want to see that, don’t follow people who post it a lot. And don’t feel bad about unfollowing if you need to. I feel like the culture here is a bit different from something like twitter or Insta because our follower counts are private so they’re less of a focus. I wouldn’t worry too much about someone being offended that you unfollowed. Most people understand that we’re all trying to curate our experience.
Hope this helps! Have fun :)

hi I hope i don't seem rude but what do you mean by "prev has been outlawed by staff"? hope you've a good day!
(in reference to this post)
so when you look at a post on your dashboard, or perhaps in the like blog-specific view that looks like the dashboard, there's that bit at the top that says current-blog [reblog symbol] other-blog, where other-blog is the one that current-blog (the one you're looking at) reblogged the post from. and it USED TO BE that when you clicked on the url other-blog, it would take you to this specific post on that other blog.
but no longer. staff recently pushed a change so that now when you click on the url of other-blog, it'll just take you to the top of other-blog, not to this specific post at all.
personally this pissed me off, because I like to follow reblog chains sometimes, especially of my own posts – it's neat to see what mutual spread the post so far and wide! or sometimes I come across a post reblogged from a friend, and I want to see what my friend said! or when someone reblogs something off my blog from a while ago, sometimes I wonder what it was I said on that post, so very long ago, and I want to go back and see what my tags were! but no, now we can't do that anymore.
apparently there's an xkit fix for this! I've been busy but I'm going to install xkit this weekend and give it a try, fingers crossed bc this has been really annoying. I'll report back once I've done it
and in case you're new here, explanation of what 'prev tags' means: a little while ago a trend arose of tagging a reblog 'prev tags' to mean "I liked the tags of the person I reblogged this from", instead of copying those tags onto the reblog itself. anyone who wanted to see those tags you liked would just click back in the reblog chain. only now you can't do that, bc staff took out that functionality.
it may surprise you to know I really disliked the prev tags trend :P tumblr blogs disappear or change urls all the time, or sometimes people delete posts, and then poof! the previous tags are gone! can't find them, can't see them, they'll forever be a mystery! plus I don't want to be constantly following reblog chains, I want to follow them when I'm actually interested. there's no need for this prev tags business, just copy the tags onto the reblog if you like them! (or into your own tags, which is also perfectly fine and friendly so long as you indicate that's what you're doing.) that's what we do here!
I say 'disliked' past tense bc I did see a few people say "prev tags isn't for ppl reading my blog, it's for the person I reblogged from, I am sending them a little kiss" and you know what I respect that. that's a conversation between two people, that's you two hanging out, that's chill. so these days I assume, for my own happiness, that that's what everyone intends when they say 'prev tags'. it's possible they don't always mean that, but I am assuming it, for me.
and I have had a good day, thank you! you're not coming off rude at all, don't worry about it, you're doing great <3 I hope you're having a good day too!

WHY THE TMS MERCH STORE HAS BEEN ON HIATUS FOR SO LONG + WHEN TO EXPECT ITS RELAUNCH
Wanted to be transparent with people since I know some are out there who've been waiting for the TMS merch store to come back for awhile. This will be a long post, so look at the red text for the key points in case you wanted to know something specific.
Q: Why did you take it down in the first place?
A: I was using Teespring (Which I'll refer to as Spring as that's what they rebranded to,) and it's quality, in my opinion, was BAD. I did not do research before choosing them as a POD service. I've had people who have ordered who told me their apparel DISINTEGRATED after barely any washes. I own a sample from them, and I can confirm. While their shirt and print quality is decent at first glance, after washing your apparel, the print will soon begin to disintegrate. I'm not sure a better way to illustrate this with text, but it reminds me of those Thanos Snap "I don't feel so good" memes from a couple years ago. Yeah, it looks like THAT after washing. Not to mention, their payment process is shady. I know 100% that some people placed orders, as they had shown proof, and it did not show up in the dashboard. I wasn't worried about making money off of it at the time, because I just wanted to provide people with merch of their favorite characters, but there was no excuse for this.
Q: Why don't you use a service like Redbubble or something else?
A: While it is true that there's lots of other options available for POD merch creation with built-in storefronts, I took the hiatus to do research, as well as included past experiences I've had with other services to support my decision— (which I'll state further down below—) and Redbubble's quality is also not good in my opinion. I've owned shirts from them before and they have a weird sticky feeling to the print that I don't like, it's not very appealing in my opinion. But this isn't only about Redbubble, other merch services I've come across don't have the quality as the issue, they have the PRICE as the issue. I am not about to make ANYONE pay $40 for a damn T-shirt even if it lasts longer than the other services. TLDR for this: It's always a mix of services having bad quality, too little options, or being way too pricy.
Q: So what are you going to do now? It looks like they all aren't for you.
A: I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to run my own store. No, I won't have all of the stock on me. There will be a few items that I'm responsible for packaging on my own, but the majority will not be shipped by me. I have to use POD services that do not have built in store fronts, which means that I have to import your order to them before they create it. This is unlike POD services with built-in storefronts, which handle everything themselves and (are supposed to) pay me after you receive your order. So this means going forward it will be more hands on for me. I've been working on building my own store for a few months now, and the pieces are finally falling into place, so I'm excited for what's to come. :)
However, there has been a bit of a roadblock.
I was really close to being able to do a soft-launch of the new TMS merch store, but unfortunately I'm unable to do so. Why? Because I went to create a Paypal business account specifically for TMS funding (to better keep track of funds that will get put back into the production and seperate everything from my personal expenses,) and when I created the account I got flagged as 'being under 18' when I'm 20 years old and my ID clearly indicated such. After repetitively getting put on hold by Paypal customer service I was told "It is just a generic email, YOU actually need to be 21 because you live in Mississippi." ...Which is ridiculous in all honesty. Through this Paypal adventure I learned that there are only 3 US states where the age of majority is not 18, and I just so happen to live in the state with the highest age of majority. ...Great. At the very least, I turn 21 in a few months, only then will I be able to link the account to the store.
As for a launch date, I do not have an exact date, but I have a rough, definitive one...
Expect the TMS merch store to re-launch sometime early 2024!
(Plushes will also move from Ko-Fi to the new site when it launches.)

My tips to new users to make Tumblr more usable
This is kind of random but I think Tumblr is one of those websites that hides a lot of its functionality from users and comes with default settings that makes it kind unusable (at least for me). So I've decided to collect some suggestions about things to do immediately in order to make Tumblr a much more usable website:
Most important: Put the content you actually opt into on your dash. First, go to Settings > Dashboard and turn off "Best Stuff First." In general, (1) I don't think it's good to let social media sites curate your content feed (they're not very good! you can curate your own content feeds!), and (2) chronological ordering is much more helpful for making sense of information. I don't know why you would want posts on a site to be presented in any other way. Please save yourself and make your dash chronological by toggling this monstrosity OFF. Also for the love of god, turn off "Include posts liked by the blogs you follow" and "Include 'Based On Your Likes!'" too. Other people's experiences might be different from mine, but when Tumblr first introduced this feature and I tried it out for a while, it was so predictable that every time I came across a post that made me viscerally angry and think, "How the HELL did this get on my dash?" it was always always some random post from someone I wasn't even following… So yeah, get rid of that.
Second, make the "Following" tab your default, instead of the "For you" tab. How to do this is not particularly obvious. From the Tumblr homepage (not settings), you need to find the tabs at the top of your dash (For you, Following, Your tags) and then click the toggle/settings icon to the right of those tabs. This will allow you to reorder your tabs. In particular, what you need to do is click the pin icon to the right of "Following," and this will set Following to be your pinned and first tab. By default, when you open Tumblr, your dash will show the posts of people you have actually opted into following rather than what Tumblr suggests to you.
Next, make sure timestamps on posts are on. This should be the default (despite what Tumblr says?), but if you don't see timestamps at the top of all posts, I highly recommend turning this setting on (under Settings > Dashboard). Knowing when a post was made is hugely helpful for understanding the context of the post, and I don't know why websites would allow you to hide this, really, unless they want you walking around with no sense of time or context, which uh… I don't recommend that social media experience!
Turn off endless scrolling (under Settings > Dashboard): Websites like endless scrolling to keep people from leaving the site. I recommend turning this off to make it more obvious how many posts you've scrolled through on Tumblr, to make it easier to find your place in older posts, and also to make the website just lighter to load. When I last used it, the Tumblr mobile app does not allow pagination, which is pretty typical of social media apps in general. Honestly, I recommend just not using the Tumblr mobile app at all. I've uninstalled it and aside from missing the convenience of being able to attach photos from my phone onto Tumblr posts, I really don't miss it…
Things that you may or may not be interested in:
Enable custom theme on (each of) your blog(s): So fun fact: If you don't have a custom theme enabled, then when people visit your blog when not logged into Tumblr, they will only be able to scroll through a few of the posts on your blog before being prompted by Tumblr to log in if they want to see more. This popup cannot be gotten around, and so people without Tumblr accounts or who are browsing on a device/browser without a login session just won't be able to see your posts. Personally, I do not like this behavior -- I like my blogs to be archives with useful permalinks that can be browsed by anyone. Anyway, you can get rid of this annoying prompt by going to Account > (select blog) > Blog settings and toggling that "Enable custom theme" slider. It doesn't really matter what theme you use (although there are a lot of options to choose from), just use a custom one!
Turn off "Shorten long posts" (under Settings > Dashboard): YMMV, but I personally don't find this setting very helpful as the maximum length for when it starts cutting off posts is pretty short and falls far short of what I would consider a "long post" that is inconvenient to scroll past. Instead, you may want to turn off this setting and create a filter for the tag "long post" (under Settings > Account > Filtered Tags).
Mature content: If you're interested in possibly seeing mature content, you may want to review your mature content settings (under Settings > Account) as by default, Tumblr is set to hide it entirely and doesn't tell you that it's hidden posts from you and so you probably just will not be aware this setting is a thing! Personally, I use the "Blur" setting.
Hiding content from users you don't want to see: As far as I can tell, if you see someone's posts in (e.g.) tag searches and would prefer not to see any of that person's posts in public places like that tag or appear on your dash by people you follow reblogging their posts, you should block them. Official Tumblr documentation does not say that this is a feature of blocking, but it is.
When Tumblr's functionality isn't enough… External tools such as XKit Rewritten provide a whole lot of QoL fixes to Tumblr's interface like making it easier to reply to replies, hiding posts you've already seen, showing how many new/unread posts are in tracked tags, showing all tags on posts by default rather than requiring you to click "See all," etc. For me, one thing I needed in order to make Tumblr semi-usable for me is hiding notes in tag searches (because I don't really need constant reminders that my tastes aren't aligned with wider fandom's tastes lol). I couldn't find a tool that does this, so I wrote a simple Tampermonkey script to do it for me.
Hope this helps new users of Tumblr, and feel free to add other helpful tips if you have them!

Just remembered one of if not the funniest dream I had. I remember distinctly being aware of mood boards one day like stuff that relates to a character ya know their mood/vibe. So I guess this idea for a mood board went into my dreams because the dream had me create a Skitzo the 1920s killer bear mood board and it obviously contained like disturbing imagery. Blood, rotten meat, maggots and flies, fire, hell imagery, yeah disturbing stuff that relates to Skitzo ya get the point. Now dream me uploaded this to Tumblr and this is where the absurd part starts because I remember VERY VIVIDLY putting like 16 different trigger warnings in the tags to ensure it doesn't come across someone's dashboard who didn't want to see it. After doing this dream me went to sleep and upon waking up there was like 48 messages and posts dropping me by name—like for some reason people used my actual name and knew it and weren't calling me Toon Buffoon???—anyways, yeah they were directly tagging me and stuff and people got really fucking mad at my dumb joke and they tried to cancel me.
Now the funny part is how they did that, because like one edgy dumb joke with disturbing imagery obviously ain't cancel worthy or even worthy to get mad at in the first place, so people just started to dig up my past and upon finding nothing THEY JUST MADE SHIT UP. Like they would use the most trivial pieces of evidence like my fanfics to try and paint me as a horrible person, yet when that didn't work they just started faking screenshots and it got increasingly absurd. Like one person adamantly accused me of being apart of the kgb or some foreign government organization or other stupid things like that, unprompted too they just made shit up as I said. The stupidity of the accusations got so wild dream me didn't bother defending myself, she was just confused and befuddled yet these smear campaigns worked and I got banned off Tumblr. That's where the dream ended too so like, idk to me that's hilarious because people were just getting absurd with it. It was like one giant bit everyone was in on, yet they were fully serious about it and weren't being ironic in their accusations.

I was going to write in and rip into how much I hate BNFs. But then I realised I don't actually hate BNFs as people. They're just people like me. What I fucking hate is the glorification of BNFs and other fans putting them on a pedestal.
I remember you got an ask a long while back where anon was saying they wished they were a BNF because everything they do seems so much more important than what anyone else does. Their opinions, their headcanons etc are more important and, even worse, just blindly accepted by many other fans. This was probably the thing I couldn't stomach most after the anti mob mentality I found when I came to Tumblr. I find it so gross how people fawn over BNF's and treat them like some sort of experts or oracles, as if they have secret hidden source material knowledge that everyone else does not.
Tbh, I read your blog in browser and logged out because I don't want to log back in to my account and see some BNF bs on my dashboard. I've had enough of actually being on Tumblr.
That recent anon talking about how a BNF threw a tanty because some other BNF updated a fic on the anniversary of their own fic is hilarious. The fact that these people think they are that important, and the fact that other people enable their self-aggrandizement is just sad.
I understand that there are BNFs who became BNFs because they produce genuinely fantastic content, but personally, these are few and far between. Most of the ones I've come across are just gatekeeping their husbando and seem to get off on a powertrip that some unwitting people give them that attention and consider them the only one true expert on the husbando.
I've hyperfixated on the same character for almost half a decade and have spent that time roaming a whole bunch of social media platforms but always avoided Tumblr because I heard it was toxic. Eventually, I gave in and joined here too because curiosity got the better of me. And uuughhh....the BNF thing just put me off so much. The way people put them on a pedestal.
I read through some of these long af meta posts they put out and I thought nope, completely disagree with you on your take on blorbo and just stopped reading those posts and continued to write my own fanfics the way I wanted to and eventually just got off Tumblr for the most part. But this fawning over BNFs just makes me roll my eyes to high heaven.
Apologies to any BNFs reading this. Ya'll cool but some of you need to realise you don't actually know anything the rest of us don't.
--
The term has been used lots of ways over time. Long ago, it was mosttly for infrastructure builders (because concoms and zine eds are highly visible compared to a lot of online infrastructure builders). In the LJ era, it was mostly fic authors because fic itself was what the community focused on most.
I'm sure there are people who'd consider me a BNF by now simply for my tumblr turning into some sort of hub.
The main problem is really the elevation of some rando's opinions to Eternal Truth. The so-called BNFs themselves come in all flavors from entitled babies to people who refuse to admit that they are a BNF.
"You should have known about my fic anniversary" is something I've seen from fans whom nobody has heard of too. Entitled, ridiculous people are all over the place, and they're often enabled by those closest to them. We just tend to hear about them when they've gotten popular.
The mistake is to treat BNF-dom as an objective state that can be diagnosed with some definitive test.
All it really means is "Some people think you're more famous/influential than the fans around you".

Rules for new tumblr users
I'm sure people will have seen other mcyt blogs first and they've all given warnings but I'm just making this to pin at the top of my blog and so I can edit it when I inevitably realise I've forgotten something.
General ground rules:
If you have a default profile picture, blog and haven't reblogged anything, you will likely get blocked as a potential spam account. It doesn't have to be a lot, just search the tags for some of your interests and reblog some cool art or something.
You have to curate your own dashboard on tumblr. Search and follow the tags of things you enjoy, find users within those tags you want to see more from, follow and reblog posts from them. And if you aren't enjoying yourself, don't be afraid to unfollow people again (we don't usually pay attention to follower counts) and block tags/people if you really aren't happy seeing them.
If you want to keep things nice and neat, most of us will have a main blog (the one you get when you join the website) and then for any particularly strong interests will have a side blog. You can't like or follow from side blogs, but you can reblog things easily and people can follow side blogs if they share that interest with you. You can even make group blogs by going to the side bar of your sideblog and clicking 'members'!
Don't censor words, especially in the tags. You won't get reported or 'shadowbanned' for saying words like 'kill' or 'fuck' and if you do censor them then people who have them as blocked words and may be triggered by them will see them anyway.
When you join tumblr, there will automatically be sections showing what you've liked and who you've followed publically visible on your blog. Not only can you make these invisible in your settings, but we actively encourage it! People don't usually pay attention to them anyway but it's easier for you to like the things you want when you know people won't see them and judge you.
If you want to have a conversation with other people and get replies, put what you want to say in the main text of reblogs. If you're just trying to add a funny comment or say things without people responding to them, put it in the hashtags or as a reply. It means you can reblog things from other people without also having to reblog hundreds of people's random little comments.
Mcyt specific:
If you're gonna make posts, use 'mcyt' rather than the word 'mine/craft' when you're tagging. That tag is reserved for people who want to talk about the game and if you start talking about your blorbos in their tag, you will be told off for it. Same with tags where the word is included, use (e.g. use mc championships instead of the full name because it will still get picked up by the game's tag)
There are people in the mcyt communities on tumblr who ship and will post about those ships in the main tags. I'm personally not one of those people and try to avoid it where possible but you will inevitably come across it. If that's not your thing, don't make posts raving about how terrible it is or start harrassing them. If you don't want to see it just block the people doing it, block the relevant tags and move on. The communities here are pretty good at tagging their stuff using 'hermitshipping' for hermitcraft, 'trafficshipping' for the life series, 'empireshipping' for empires, and 'dsmpshipping' for dream smp. I don't think it happens much for dsmpblr but the others it's a regular occurence.
A lot of us (including myself) don't want to be noticed by content creators! We were here first and for the people who write fics or make art, they may feel uncomfortable posting if there's a chance a CC will see it. I believe Aimsey's now saying there's an 'Aimsey look' tag that they will go through each week so only people who wanted to be noticed will be, and I know we can't really do much to stop CCs going through the hashtags but just don't @ them in posts unless they're your own or OP specifically says you can.
No drama please! This is supposed to be a chill space and people moving over from twitter aren't going to ruin that. We've been here longer than you have, so you're the guests under our house rules. This is especially the case when it comes to MCCs. Leave Scott and Noxcrew be!
This is a personal one but please don't complain to me about buildmart. Yes I know people hate it and think it's unfair but I and other people here really enjoy it so I will simply block people who complain about it. We're all entitled to opinions but it's really tiring to see people shit on it once a month every month.

after all that happened tonight, i’ve decided that i’m going to turn off anons for a little while. i’ll try to go through and answer all of the anons that i currently have sitting in my inbox before i turn it off just in case turning anons off like poofs them away or anything. however, it’ll probably take me a while to get to them because of finals. so, in the meantime, i think i’m going to take a little break from tumblr.
i don’t receive hateful anons very often, and when i do it’s usually easy to brush off, but tonight’s anons said some things that have undone a lot of the progress that i had made on improving my mental health.
last week i posted something about sapphic!chrissy coming out to eddie and i tagged it with the tag ‘platonic!hellcheer’.
earlier this afternoon, i received an anon asking me to please not use the hellcheer tag for platonic!hellcheer. this confused me because I was sure that i hadn’t used the main hellcheer tag in either of my platonic!hellcheer posts. however, when i received the anon, i was on my way to a tutoring appointment for my calc class, so i was unable to look into any further at the time. by the time i had opened up the app, a few hours later, on my commute home, i found that i had received anon, this one much less polite then the first. this anon had clearly taken the time to scroll through my blog and look at the personal photos that i had posted, because they made it a point to tear me down based on my looks in retaliation for posting something about platonic!hellcheer. they called me an anti, which i’m not, and i wish i could say that was the worst of what they called me… but it wasn’t. that anon really upset me and i made the mistake of responding to the other, polite anon while my emotions were still high. i shouldn’t have done that as i realize now that i might’ve come across as a bit passive aggressive in my response, which wasn’t my intention.
when i got home, i found that i had received two more anons. then, i got the notification that i had received a third while eating dinner. these last three anons were similarly hateful to the second; one of which chose to tear me down based on my looks and my (perceived) personality, much like the other had. however, the other two chose to make assumptions about my character, assumptions which were incredibly offensive. i was accused of being “perverted” for headcanoning a character as sapphic when said character was not portrayed as being sapphic in canon. i was accused of being biphobic, which really threw me for a loop because i am, myself, bi. there were many other things that these anons said about me, but, honestly, it really fucking sucks to even think about all that they said, let alone type it out for you all to read.
it’s really difficult for me to open up the app or log-in on hear without thinking about those anons, and that sucks because this used to be my happy place.
before i begin my break, i’d like to clear some things up: i’m not anti-hellcheer. i’m not. the only reason i made posts about platonic!hellcheer is because they were made in the context of sapphic!chrissy cunningham (an au in which that character is sapphic) and because i like those two characters and i like dynamic between those them (both in the platonic and romantic sense). i did not use the main hellcheer tag in either of my posts, and i purposefully didn’t use that tag so as not to insert my platonic au in a space where it didn’t belong. i did, however, tag it using the tag platonic!hellcheer, so that anyone who wanted to read about that platonic au could find it. i’m sorry if, in doing so, my posts somehow showed up on the dashboards of people who frequently consume hellcheer content or in the results for the search ‘hellcheer’. again, my intention was not to insert my writing in a space it had no place being in; it was just to make it easier to find for people who were interested in consuming content for that specific platonic au. i understand that intent does not equal impact, though, so i have deleted the post which explicitly used “platonic!hellcheer” in the text and i will remove the platonic!hellcheer tag from the other post. again, i am sorry for tagging improperly and for upsetting so many people to the point that they felt like they had to attack me for my looks and my character because of that. i will do my best to make sure that nothing like that ever happens again going forward.
to all my mutuals, if you want to reach me in the meantime, i’m available on discord and i might lurk on here from time to time once things have settled down a bit. to everyone else, i’ll talk to you soon, i hope.
take care of yourselves. <3

You have to take responsibility for the content you consume.
Even if you stumble across it accidentally. Even if you find it personally triggering. Strangers on the internet are not responsible for your mental health.
Approximately one jabillionty internet years ago, I joined tumblr when it first started becoming popular. I was into some weird stuff, but because the tumblr tools for curation were... let us be kind, and say "nascent", just being on Tumblr meant consenting to a lot of dick on my dashboard.
I'm not into dicks. Of any kind, really, but especially not surprise graphic dick, and especially not when I'm trying to look at other things. (No shade for my dick-loving siblings - please enjoy all the dick you like.)
So I stopped being on Tumblr and while I was definitely missing some cool stuff, I weighed my desire to not be faced with surprise dick and my desire to see cool stuff, and made Tumblr a place that I went infrequently and knew that there would be some surprise dick if I went there.
I have a very similar story about AO3.
Between Tumblr's porn ban (a step backwards for society) and significantly more robust curation tools (a step forward), Tumblr is a significantly more pleasant place for me to be (although I really, really, really wish that it hadn't been at the expense of sex workers), so I'm back and enjoying the experience, curating my dash with a ruthlessness that I only wish had been available a decade ago.
But here's the thing: I'm not mad at users for using the platform for what they want, even if it's things I don't like or feel unsafe around. I'm not mad at tumblr staff for creating the platform that could house things I find personally gross. In the days when it wasn't my bag, I didn't go places where I would likely run into it. You can't be mad about going on the seeing dicks website and finding there are a bunch of dicks there.
I now have options to curate my feed and I do... and sometimes, I still run into surprise, graphic dick, despite my best efforts.
Then a decision tree enters the picture: what happened that I encountered this surprise dick? Do I want to stop following the person who posted it? Should I block them? Did it come across in tags? Should I stop following the tag? Should I block another, different tag so I don't see surprise dick?
Or do I accept that sometimes there's going to be some surprise dick and just find a way to be copacetic with it?
There's no wrong answer here, except the one where you anonymously harass users for posting things you personally don't vibe with. If you start thinking that's your only option, maybe it's time to reconsider how you spend your time on the internet and think that maybe, this is the time to part ways with the platform, much the same way I did a jabillionty years ago.
