Saw your tag, what jokes had John Mulaney had that are transphobic? I can think of the drag Queen one on the first album but that specially about drag Queens. A lot of the stuff he wrote for Stefan was ableist , but I can’t think of particularly transphobic jokes on his three Netflix specials, is it in his new stuff? Also I am not challenging that you’re right I just would like to be aware. Thanks!

On Friday, during one of his shows, he invited Dave Chapelle to frontline without notifying anyone in attendance. Chapelle has made a name for himself as a really transphobic performer, and sure enough most of his material last night was transphobic, homophobic, and ableist jokes (one of which involved beastiality and an audience member's service dog). John purposely made no sure one was able to use their phones to record the show, knowing Dave would be making horrific and offensive jokes (as he thanked the crowd for not having a violent reaction). He spent the evening laughing at Dave's jokes and embraced him on stage afterward, calling him his best friend. There are multiple accounts of what happened and a few articles written about the show on twitter, but like I said, no video footage. John fully knew what he was doing by inviting Dave.

Just found out that John Mulaney's newest comedy special, Baby J, is now available to listen to on streaming services!

It's SO good and totally works without the visuals, but I do recommend watching the Emmy-nominated special itself on Netflix. I have a feeling it's going to win Outstanding Writing next month (which John won previously in 2018 for Kid Gorgeous).

It's WELL worth it—"Don't believe the persona!" 😭

Plus it has a stellar Bo Burnham reference that I remember cheering loudly for when I saw John sing that ditty in Philly in 2021.

first two pages of frankenstein, the national (2023): the new yorker calling them sad dads was hilarious. there are multiple songs on this album that have some perfect mark knopfler fat guitar, which makes me happy all the way back to 1985.

matildas: the world at our feet (disney+, 2023): perfect PR move to drop this right now as a cure for the biggest problem soccer faces in australia - almost all our good players are in foreign domestic leagues, many of which are difficult or impossible to catch matches from. they've sold out every one of their world cup matches instantly (rip me vs getting a ticket to their melbourne match), so they probably aren't too worried, but it's a lot easier to generate the level of hype they really want for the team when you have fans of individual players and sammy alone cannot carry that. if nothing else i think this might have been an attempt to shift even a small fraction of that pressure off her.

'what was twitter, anyway?' (willy staley, nyt): maybe the best piece about twitter i've read in the last 7 years. it made me feel good about abandoning the platform and sort of embarrassed to have ever been there through a point that i've just fundamentally never internalised before reading this: whatever was going on on twitter wasn't as important as it felt, by a long, long measure. since about 2013, everyone on twitter and everyone talking about twitter have been gaslighting each other into believing that this was the marketplace of ideas, when really it was just a place where a certain kind of person can behave in a certain kind of way. i am that certain kind of person! and it was nice to be called out on that in a way that resonated rather than in a way that mostly just sounded like it was coming from squares who didn't get it. also, willy staley was the guy who wrote the mcrib piece for the awl, which is an internet classic, and i enjoyed reading it again.
