Day 4: RPG With Great Art

I can't possibly choose just one! Big fan of Girl By Moonlight's colorful and evocative pieces. Whenever I flick through Tales of Xadia, I end up yammering to my partner about how beautiful the art and presentation is.

Nova is heckin gorgeous too!

Cortex - Troupeau Bleu

The sample from the late MF Doom's (RIP) "One Beer" features an immediately recognizable and almost ubiquitous sample that comes from this album. A French jazz-funk record that oozes with soul and groove, the album has become a sort of honeypot for hip-hop producers and rappers, with artists like Tyler, The Creator, Lil Yachty, and the aforementioned MF Doom using tracks from this album to flip into making something new and refreshing as this album was. Mireille Dalbray's lilting voice moves from terse verses in the first half of the album, to soulful scatting in the second half, and the synergy between the band members is impeccable, moving together like one, to create smooth and funky compositions.

Crise dos 20

Os 20 anos são tenebrosamente engraçados e trágicos a mesma medida.

De uma virada pra outra, pronto. Acabou. Nunca mais se é adolescente, não que eu ainda fosse, mas é mais solene. Como se um selo de "mundo real" fosse pregado como um broche no meu sobretudo cinza. (O sobretudo cinza é a minha roupa adulta).

Preciso arrumar um emprego. Porque minha mãe aos 16 anos já tinha uma filha e eu ainda tenho um poster em tamanho real do Harry Styles no meu quarto, uma dívida enorme no cartão de credito da minha avó com o nome "t4f - The Eras Tour SP" e uma coleção de roupas do rei leão.

Então um dia eu vejo como to muito velha pra ser jovem demais, e cozinho um quilo de feijão, lavo os banheiros, vou ao super mercado e dirijo pela cidade com um cigarro entre os dentes sem me preocupar com a polícia atrás de mim.

Meu rosto já tem umas linhas de expressão, a ciência diz que meu cortex pré-frontal acabou de terminar de se formar. Fico confusa. Não vou mais produzir novos neurônios, os que estão aqui vão começar a morrer, mas eu ainda tenho uma facilidade enorme pra aprender uma lingua nova e decorar o nome de cada musculo do meu corpo.

Meus amigos tem entre 15 e 30 anos. Alguns no segundo ano do ensino médio, outros fumando um baseado no intervalo da faculdade e ainda há os com dois filhos e alguma briga judicial se desenrolando. De alguma forma eu estou nesse limbo entre me sentir e não me sentir pertencente a nenhum desses lugares. Não me lembro como se resolve uma equação simples e não me imagino com um filho no colo, mas também não ter tido um relacionamento sólido até agora quase me faz vomitar de medo de não conseguir me casar, (as pessoas tem se casado mais cedo).

A vida parece ter andado a passos de tartaruga até os 20, e de uma hora pra outra virou uma maratonista competindo contra uma menina que nunca pisou em uma pista antes, mas que se sente na obrigação de vencer. Tentando chegar primeiro que todo o tempo que nunca vou ter. Tentando conhecer tão logo, todas as pessoas que vou conhecer em uma vida toda. Tentando amar de uma vez todos os amores e deixar de sentir todas as dores que ja foram pré-programadas só pra mim.

A idade vai sufocando e o horizonte de coisas que eu sinto que esperam de mim vão chegando mais perto a cada segundo. As expectativas que nunca vou alcançar, a vida que esperavam que já tivesse aos vinte parece cada dia mais longe.

Cada dia mais, eu sei menos ainda o que fazer, e continuo acompanhando todos os relacionamentos da Taylor Swift e assistindo a todas as series adolescentes da TV.

Holy moly does this novelization fragment confirm Alita wasn't in the Scrapyard for those whole 300 years?

( @imgonnachangemyusername here is one of these things)

So, one of the big mysteries around Alita is how she got in the Scrapyard and how long she was there before Ido found her. Maybe Alita lied inactive there since The Fall, for 300 years.

But the official novelization seems to hint at something different:

Nova heard her.

Chrome optics weren't his only enhancements, and there had been many upgrades since the young battle prodigy had first spotted him watching her spar with her sensei Gelda in the zero-g sphere.

That hadn't been the first time he had watched her, nor the last. He had kept track of her over the years—the centuries—and when she had finally fallen, he'd thought she had met her end.

(let's ignore Nova saw her spar with Gelda, this is a topic for another post)

The last sentence is constructed in such a way as if centuries passed before Alita ended up in Scrapyard.

While the war was long, for sure it didn't last for centuries. This indicates Nova had an eye for Alita after The Fall, until something happend, and then she fell.

But what would happen between The Fall and Ido discovering Alita? And would that make sense?

Idea #1

Alita could survive the Fall and remain active for centuries, maybe even still taking actions against Zalem after the Fall and eventually she clashed with Nova/got caught.

However, according to Ido, Alita's brain was biologically between 14-18, a teenager's brain. Even 25 years old brain is different than 18. It shouldn't remain a teenager brain if she was active for longer. It makes more sense that she went into statis when she was 18. Until URM bodies didn't allow the brains to mature frontal cortex so the soldiers would be more willing to do extreme stuff 🫠 overthinking much

Idea#2

Nova caught Alita when URM lost during The Fall and experimented on her for centuries, then threw her to the trash.

But it doesn't make sense how Nova wants her anti-matter heart, if she was in his hands before. Unless he only uses this as an excuse to tell his subordinates when in fact he is hunting her purely for fun.

OR, Alita wasn't discarded by Nova, she fell while trying to escape from his lab

Idea#3

Nothing happened. She was in the Scrapyard and Nova was aware of it, keeping an eye on her, and centuries passed like that.

Buut that's not how the sentence sounds like

You shouldn't stop learning just because there is no teacher or obvious consequences.

• Watch Nova. Watch Spongebob. Learn useless stuff. Read novels. Build something. Learn to read novels, listen to music, and watch movies like an artist and you will get so much more out of them. Art & creativity of all sorts is so important to developing your mind. Get on Tumblr and follow a bunch of weirdos to be inspired by and to just get different perspectives on life and this world. Hug a sequoia and listen to the water rushing up inside. Make a LOT of mistakes. Keep trying new things.

• Your mind will follow your heart. Don’t let the money, comfort, and insulation of academic life harden your heart or make you apathetic. Don’t look away from the lines of broken down RVs. Don’t look away from the working conditions of the staff in your institution. Don’t look away from Palestine. God is love and God loves by being present with us in the mess and not looking away from it. God never looked away from Jesus on the cross. That is antithetical to who God is. Notice the unhoused person hiding outside the Starbucks. If it is safe, give them some money for drugs and keep your heart.

• Find scientists, other experts, nerds, and peers on social media and just be yourself (so many of them are super friendly and kind people, but not all so watch your back).

• And stay away from drugs until after your prefrontal cortex is done developing sometime after 25. Go to parties and have fun of course, but your brain is still building itself and the pathways you make now will be very difficult to change. You will need your executive function for grad/medical school and for your calling. So take it easy at the parties and don’t fall into habitual use of ethanol, THC, etc until that brain is done developing.
