Monster High G3 Opinions (Part 1)

I loved Monster High since the first time I saw them in stores. I was neck deep in my creepypasta phase and seeing this dolls that were the decedents of well-known monsters was something special to me because I never saw something like that ever before.

I loved their fashion and and (at the time) unique doll features (transparent limps, skeleton bodies, colorful skin, etc,..) but unfortunately I never owned a single MH doll until I was well into my twenties. Even though I was obsessed with them in my teens, I now have a much deeper love for them since I'm now able to buy them myself.

I was quite exited after hearing that G3 was coming and seeing the first images of the new dolls was something special to me.

After seeing G1 and G2 I was quite surprised how much they actually changed for G3 both look and personality wise and it took me a while to get used to some of the changes. What I can't get used to is the constant complaining of other fans who grew up with G1.

Yes, G1 had nice outfits but it also came out in the early 2010s so it's a bit more of a reflection of that time. G3 is meant to appeal to this generation of kids and young teens. We are not the main demographic of this dolls. Your childhood is not ruined! It's still there! Let the kids have their own thing!

Draculaura

Draculaura. MH's favorite child. Why else would she get so many dolls?

G1 Draculaura probably appealed mostly to the girlies who had an obsession of vampires thanks to twilight and vampire diaries (I know this because I was that "girl").

Ten years ago I would have thought that the G1 doll was one of the best looking dolls out there but comparing her with the G3 version I have to admit that she is quit boring. I fell in love the G3 doll immediately. She got such a nice glow up and I love the new body type for her.

Small doll rant: The new bodies of G3 are such a nice upgrade from G1. One of the issues I had with G1 was the fact that felt so fragile in the hand. Like holding a couple of sticks. Even compared to a regular Barbie doll they were awfully thin. I liked what they did with the different heights but the different body types just makes them so much better.

G1 Draculaura had over the years a lot of great outfits mostly because she had so much dolls made of her. G3 still goes strong with a witchy touch but they still put her in almost every thing. She is the only character to be in every single skulltimate secrets series. Give that girl a break for fucks sake! Give the spotlight to somebody else!

Clawdeen

Clawdeen was the very first Monster High doll I ever bought. It was the Boo-riginal Creeproduction and she was the only doll left at the store. I love her so much and she has a special place in my heart.

Unfortunately, G1 Clawdeen had the problem that had the most misses in therms of outfits and suffered the most skin color changes (they turned her gray in Freak Du Chic and blue in Great Scarrier Reef which is weird since she was the only one who had her skin changed. Clawvenus gets a pass because she got fused with Venus)

I understand why they used so much animal print and fur in her outfits but a lot of them just weren't it. Like they did her dirty so many times but the few good ones were iconic.

G3 Claweed is just adorable. I love her so much and she got so many cute outfits so far. The only thing that annoys me is the fact that they keep giving her purple hair. I like the purple streaks she has in her core doll but every time they give her full on purple hair it's too much. I clashes with her outfit too much make her look like a purple blob.

Frankie

Frankie! My favorite since day one! G1 Frankie was an icon. She had so many gorgeous outfits.

I just love her so much.

G3 Frankie dethroned G1 the moment I read their bio. As someone who is non-binary having a doll who shares the same identity as myself is just huge. It's just something that I never thought I could have and I almost cried after seeing them in person. This doll has so much more meaning to me than any other doll.

I will be biased about them. I love them too much.

-Alya has the fox necklace and ran, Lila gives chase.

-Alya manages to hide in an alley way and slides to the ground, lila's words haunting her. While Alya is a confident individual, she still didnt establish herself in this new school, and her only friend right now happens to be the bestie of the bully that is threatening to destroy her social life.

-Hawkmoth picks up on this feeling and decide now is the perfect time to make an akuma.

-So he slides an akuma in the fox necklace and...

-"Fauxgarou, (Points if you actually guess what this is a reference too). I am Hawkmoth. You are doing what you can to stop someone from lying only for you to suffer the consequences. I am giving you the power to expose the truth and scare anyone that would dare do wrong.

-So Alya agrees and becomes a Werefox creature (Think kind of like Clawdeen but Fox variant and a bit more monsterous).

-Lila arrives only to see the new akuma and Fauxgarou is ready to fight.

-So now having made copies and met Fu, Marinette leaves and realizes oh s*** she was supposed to help Lila with a thing. So she starts rushing and finds herself in the park where she accidentally bumps into Adrien. She flusteredly apologizes and Adrien notices the book she's holding. Asking where she got it.

-Marinette mumbled an answer about it belonging to Lila, but Adrien realized something was off as he told her it isnt hers but his.

-Marinette was shocked to hear it and gives adrien the book back, not knowing it was his. Adrien accepts her apology and even says he should thank her for having it. If he went home without it, his dad would be mad at him, as he wasnt supposed to take it.

-Marinette now has a culprit, not adrien but Gabriel. But she also realizes Lila stole the book from Adrien. But why would she want a necklace made as a copy from the book...

-This thought was interrupted when lila runs into the park Bite mark on her arm. She was being chased by some sort of Fox human hybrid.

-Lila was screaming for help. Adrien and Marinette split up to go get help (transform)

-Chat noir arrives first and knocks back Fauxgarou saying its not polite to bite.

-Ladybug scoops up Lila and asks what happened. Lila lies about the encounter and suddenly she gains fox ears, she lies again and suddenly a tail. Everytime lila Lies she turns more and more into a fox! (Think like Truth mixed with Oni-chan with a fox twist)

-Ladybug realizes this and instructs Lila to tell her everything HONESTLY, and Lila still tries to twist it a bit only for her to gain a fox paw for an arm and decides to stop lying.

-Ladybug hides her disappointment and rushes into the fight to help save Alya.

-Chat noir got bit during the scuffle and is worried on what would happen.

-"As long as you dont lie, you will be fine."

-"Good to know, btw You are the most beautiful girl in all of Paris."

-There was no fox parts that appeared.

-"Focus kitty."

-Fauxgarou clashed with the heroes and thanks to quick thinking they stopped her.

-Alya gets deakumatized and appologizes (not remembering what happened).

-Ladybug tells her that she understood why she got akumatized and that she shouldnt be hard on herself over it. And she is sure that her new friend wont abandon her. The heroes head off after they fixed everything.

-Marinette came back and hugged alya saying she is glad she is okay.

-Alya is now convinced she needs to set up a blog dedicated to the two heroes that saved her... but first she needed to stand up to Lila.

There would be like, Drama in the drama. Like, seriously, have you ever seen an episode of Monster High where all is just peaceful or in harmony with the hallway ? Poor Mr. Where, he's like, the only responsible adult in this whole mess, and not for too long....

Juliet Capulet - Draculaura. She was the first to apply for the project, so Mr. Where give her the role of Juliet ! She ALREADY played Juliet, of course, but she promised to Clawd that she will be the one to schedule they're next romantic date.... And you ask, ''but, he know right ?''.... ha ha.... No.

Romeo Montague - Clawd Wolf. You know, there is some darkest hours in you're relationship's status, a time when you need to partake into the strange fantaisies of you're loved one. Clawd love Draculaura, but he know that he is going to die very soon, truly a true Romeo move.

Juliet Capulet (Second Part) - Kieran Valentine. This was part of his therapy, okay ?

Romeo Montague (Second Part) - Spelldon Cauldronello. Mother Circe recently taught him Divination. And he know there will be, like, real Drama. He's here for that... And for Kieran Valentine's booty.

ROLES OF CHAOTIC ALIGNEMENT

Rosaline - Abbey Bominable. Mr. Where say that she will not speak, and she don't want to waste oxygen on such silly things or being the romantic playground of a ''Shakespeare'' somebody... Rosaline is her spirit animal.

The Nurse - Clawdeen Wolf. It's possible that she want some claws on the matter with Draculaura and her brother. It"s seems to be closely related to some weird family-teenage matters, or just a upcoming prediction of Clawd's difficult encounter with theater...

Capulet (Patriarch) - Bram Devein. A weird Belfry Prep thing about being the masters of something.... But there is a problem, he didn't read the end of the play.

Montague (Patriarch) - Romulus. A weird Crescent Moon High's habit about having a eye on Belfry Prep.... But there is a problem, he didn't read the end of the play.

Prince(ss) Escalus - Amanita Nightshade wanted the best role, because Amanita can't end or be loved by only one, she is too bootiful for that ! So she wanted to be THE PRINCESS. And she was merciful, she only changed the gender, not the name ! Now, Mr. Where is praying that she don't want anything MORE.

Count Paris - Catrine DeMew. She wanted to explore some ''orientation theories'' by playing a potential suitor and viewing the effect between ''role and gender''. Mr. Where didn't ask anything about this.

Mercutio - Purrsephone. Apparently there is some minor conflicts between her and her twin, so she is her for the catharsis.

Tybalt - Meowlody. Apparently there is some minor conflicts between her and her twin, so she is her for the catharsis.

Lady Capulet - Heaths Burns.... This was that or detention and a word for the parent. He choose the first because he didn't want to lose his new Gamegore yet. But Mr. Where is seriously asking himself if this is a good idea....

Lady Montague - Gigi Grant. She just want to experience Theater, so a little role is best. Hope she will have a first good impression...

Benvolio - Toralei Stripes. This time, no mischief.... She just want to see the dynamics between the twins.

Balthasar - Ghoulia Yelps. She want to experience a new hypothetical mechanic for zombie's language on stage ! Mr. Where didn't have his word about that, because Mr. Rotter is the one whose class is concerned about the project.

Peter - Manny Taur didn't read anything about Romeo and Juliet, but this is his last chance to prove to Iris that he is a sentimental Monster.... He just hope is character is one of those who die.

Friar Laurence - Jackson Jeckyll. Well... This everyone's hope at least.

Abram and Friar John - Quill Tarantyno. Because hey, Backgrounders need love, too !

Gregory and Sampson - Astranova and Djinni Whisp Grant. Astranova is there for the experience, Djinni is just there because she know there will be some deep gay vibes between Spelldon and Kieran, and she don't want to lose or miss is bet with Casta.

Other Roles - You know, these benevolent souls are actually part of the few one who actually care about Shakespeare. But, Alas, with all the chaos that will probably occur very soon, I doubt that they will be recognized for such passion and bravery.... And there is no enough budget for backgrounders.

OTHERS

Technician and special effects - Invisi Billy, who is probably the secret nephew or blood-relative of the teacher at this point.

Prompter (aka. the litteral ghoul that save you're ass when you don't know you're text) - Scarah Screams. She will be so valuable for all that is going to happens.... Or maybe Invisi Billy will be too much of a distraction.

Today was your birthday, and you couldn't be happier than you already are. You have the best friends you could ask for and a loving boyfriend, his name is Clawd Wolf and he's also the brother of your best ghoul friend Clawdeen Wolf.

It was Sunday so there was no school. You were on your way to your living room when you heard the bell ring.

Wondering who that could be at 7 a.m. It's early? You just stood up, so you weren't that presentable. Still, you walked towards the door to open it.

Your eyes widened as you saw all of your friends and your boyfriend there. You smiled as they screamed “Happy Birthday Ghoul!” you laughed and stepped aside to let them in.

We were sitting in my living room as they gave me their presents. “Here, mine first!” screeched Draculaura as she gave me her present. I happily took it it was a small box wrapped in pink glitter wrapping paper. When I got off it I opened the box j saw a bracelet it was pink and it had some charms on it! There was a little bat a skull and a heart with a picture of Draculaura and me on it!

It was really pretty! I looked up at her, and when she saw my smile she grinned showing me her wrist with the same bracelet. “I had friendship bracelets being made for us!” she beamed. I instantly put the bracelet on. “Thank you, Draculaura! I really love it!” I said cheerfully.

Clawdeen then handed me hers “your gonna love it” she stated with a proud and wide grin on her face. When you opened a flat box, and when you opened it your eyes started to shine. In that box were the same exact earnings that clawdeen had two! You always wanted to have them and Clawdeen knew that so she bought them for you.

“Thank you, Clawdeen! I love them!” she chuckled at your cute behavior because you were fumbling with the earrings in your hands, so she went to you grabbing the earrings from you, and help you with putting them on. You look up at her smiling “Thank you!” she nodded “you're welcome!” and you both shared a laugh.

“Ooh! mine next! You're gonna love it!” Claimed Cleo with a smile. “I didn't wrap it up, 'cause I wanted to give it to you like that! Do you remember when we were shopping and you saw that one shirt from (your favorite band!) that you wanted so badly?” she used with a grin as your jaw dropped with wide eyes.

Cleo laughed while pulling out the shirt from behind her “WOW! So cool! Thank you, Cleo!” she smile at you “Anything for you, Darling!”.

As time went on you got a cool comic book from Gouhlia, a cool hat from Franky, and from Lagoona, you got some new swimming pants. Now to the last present.

Clawd stood up and went to sand right in front of you. You look up at him still smiling as you both blush. He grabbed your hand making you stand up, you're shorter than him so you have to look up at him.

He slightly fumbled with his one hand in his pocket to get something out. As he finally got it out you saw a little velvet box. So when he looked you in the eyes he opened the little box and you saw a ring, a silver one, it looked so beautiful. Then Clawd spoke up. “I got you a promise ring. I hope you like it?” he sounded nervous, his hands shaking a little.

You only nodded at him some tears in your eyes “I don't like it... I love it!” and with that, he put the ring on your finger. Then you grab him by his collar and pull him into a kiss, making everyone else in the room squealing and some “awww’s” were heard, making you pull apart blushing at each other.

Again time went by and it was beginning to get dark. Everyone had left already leaving you and your Boyfriend alone. And the air started to get thick, cause you both were now in your bedroom sharing some heated kisses! “I Love you, you're the best boyfriend I could ask for!” you told him panting slightly and looking him in the eyes, him during the same “I think I'm the lucky one to have such a sweet boyfriend like you, Y/N”

He then swooped you up and laid you on the bed while crawling on top of you. This night was going to be a long night. But you were happy, and you couldn't wish for anything better.

If anyone was wondering what I did for international lesbian day yesterday, it was driving down to Target with my mom to pick up the rest of the G3 core six! [Are they called the core series? Signatures? Wave 1?]

I'm really taken with the whole of G3 thus far - at least, in terms of the dolls. I never held out hope for a revival of G1, and my optimism on a reboot was pretty much dead with how much I disliked G2, so it feels surreal to have new Monster High dolls released in stores that I love once again.

I'll put the rest of my thoughts under the cut, though - it's going to be a long, infodumping, overdetailed post.

I love the more varied body types - which I'll go into more detail on later - and that the average doll has a thicker body overall compared to G1. They feel more sturdy and I expect/hope that they won't get the loose hip or elbow joints that G1 dolls did. The torso articulation is also a very nice touch, especially for helping them balance and stand on their own.

If I ranked the dolls from favorite to least, I'd currently put it at Draculaura, Frankie, Ghoulia, Cleo, Clawdeen, Lagoona. I expect this to change as I restyle the dolls, though, and I also have some actual customization plans to reroot Clawdeen with brown yarn and give Ghoulia a repaint. Clawdeen in particular I expect to like more once she has better hair than that pastel polypropylene.

I liked Cleo a lot more in comparison to the other dolls before I actually unboxed her. Now that I have, her outfit feels. . . quite bland. Her dress is just a one-piece and while she does have a very cute jacket [not pictured], it doesn't fit well over the dress since they're both long-sleeved. I'm also still not a huge fan of the molded-on bandages and I'll likely paint them to make them stand out better. Her headband also stays on rather poorly [so does Draculaura's but unlike Cleo, Draculaura's outfit feels complete even without her headband]. Cleo's face is one of my favorites, though, I think she has the most striking makeup.

The pets are generally decently cute [except Neptuna. Not a fan of whatever's going on there]. I've seen comparisons to Littlest Pet Shop, but to me they look much more like Barbie pets - specifically that it looks like they have eye makeup. They all feel rather lightweight - AKA cheap - but I hope that will make it easier to balance them on the dolls.

I should mention that none of G3 dolls come with stands or brushes. I can see the logic with stands since they can stand on their own - even though it's flawed logic, there's no way they'll stay standing on display. I don't know why they don't have brushes though. Personally I don't mind because I have more G1 brushes than anyone could ever need, but their hair is clearly meant to be played with and styled so it's an interesting choice not to include them. Speaking of which, none of them have glue seepage or unnecessary gel in their hair - not something I can say for many G1 lines. I will also complain about some of their accessories not quite matching the rest of their color scheme [ex: Frankie's shoes don't match any of the other pinks in their outfit] but this was also present in G1. I am disappointed at the lack of diaries as well.

Close-up on all of their bags. All of them except Clawdeen's have backpack straps, and Cleo's is the only one that snaps open - all the rest have an opening in the top that the thinner accessories can be slid into. Draculaura, Lagoona, Cleo, and Ghoulia's backpacks also have loops to carry them like handbags, but the ones on Ghoulia's are oddly small.

Draculaura's bag gives her little bat wings when she wears it and it is the cutest thing in the world. She also has this little white cameo necklace which you can just barely see in this picture - wondering if there's lore significance to that or just an outfit detail.

Draculaura also has a widow's peak now! I love it, and I'm looking forward to one of the leaked[?] Draculaura dolls that doesn't have bangs and thus shows it off.

More accessories, specifically Ghoulia's. The knock-off Switch is adorable - quite possibly my favorite of the handheld G3 items so far - and if Mattel hasn't come up with a monster pun for it, I hope someone in the fandom has. The skateboard having Deadfast on it is another detail I really like [though it's now a good time to complain mention that the print on practically all the accessories - that is, electronics, food, etc. - looks very blurry].

I was able to balance Ghoulia standing on her skateboard which I'm thrilled about. In general I love that the g3 dolls can stand on their own. Still not a replacement for stands, but it does make for more posing options for photography.

More Ghoulia since she's still my favorite character of the main six, even with the design changes [I anxiously await seeing her animated adaptation beyond promo renders]. Her shirt design reads very neurodivergence/autism symbol to me :] Sir Hoots-a-lot can attach to her forearm - much like an LPS owl - and with the G3 pets being rather lightweight, he stays on well without weighing her arm down. Those are his glasses she's wearing here because I think they look much better than her actual glasses, which have these thick, foggy lenses that obscure her eyes. I don't know what the deal is with those - G1 Ghoulia had lens that were transparent just fine, and then G3 Clawdeen's glasses don't have lenses at all.

More on the different body types! Most of the main six [Frankie, Clawdeen, Lagoona, and Ghoulia] have the same torso. Frankie has longer forearms and shins, Draculaura is all-around shorter with thicker hips, thighs and limbs, and Cleo is the same height with a tighter waist and, in comparison, wider hips. Otherwise, their bodies are the same proportions.

The above image to the left is a comparison of the forearms and hands of G3 Draculaura, Ghoulia, Frankie and G1 Catrine. The G1 arm is slimmer than the G3 dolls, and Draculaura's arm is slightly thicker than the other G3s. The G3 dolls have thicker arm and hand pegs- sort of like CAM dolls - which I'm very thankful for, I feel less concerned about snapping them while putting them back in place or pulling them out. The G3 dolls also have larger hands than G1 which I quite like.

On the right is a close-up of Frankie's prosthetic leg. I love the detail in it, especially that "Frankie" is written as if Frankie wrote it themself. I'm disappointed to see it's not removable, though - Vandala Doubloons from G1 had a removable leg so I don't see why they couldn't do it here. Ghoulia's legs are beside Frankie's to hopefully show how Frankie's are longer.

Even with the different body types, the clothing is still rather interchangeable between characters! I wouldn't mind if the clothes weren't - Monster High clothes are so character-specific that I've long seen it as the perfect doll line for varied body types - but it's definitely a pro that they are. Their tops fit each other very well. Draculaura's pants are a little loose on Frankie, but it just means they sit lower on their hips. Frankie's skirt fits Draculaura nicely, though it would be much easier to dress her in if it had velcro all the way down the back. Frankie's belt just barely fits Draculaura, but really who's going to be wearing that besides Frankie.

A major part of why Draculaura and Frankie are my favorite signature dolls of the main six are their clothing layers. They both have these sleeveless tops [a "corset" and vest, respectively] that work as tops on their own, and the blouses underneath them also work on their own as shirts. With their jackets [capelet and jacket, that is] they have the most complex outfits of the whole line.

Last but not least, a closeup on Clawdeen's shoes. They're my favorites out of the line, largely because of that pawprint tread. This picture also hopefully shows how those are not actual socks on her, but leg warmers. I also ended up demonstrating how ridiculously poofy that polypropylene hair is. I look forward to rerooting her more and more.

Lets talk about Komos the new teacher

Sooo... Komos is Dr. Jeklly and Mr. Hyde in disguise. 

finally saw the full clip of his classroom and now i understand what everyone was talking about.  

I already knew that he was gonna be the villain of the story, its kind of obvious him being the only new character, but I did not have him being Dr. J and Mr. H on my list. that or he’s gotta be connected to them in some way, because he looked too pissed when he was talking about how everyone hated Mr. Hyde. not to mention he looks almost identical to the picture of Dr. J! He could be Jackson’s and Holt’s sort of replacement being the son of the original Dr. J because Komos kind of looks too young to have gone to school with clawdeen’s and Draculaura’s parents, not to mention have a kid thats 15-16

When the character poster first came out I thought Komo’s horns looked so fake and i chopped it up to them just not having a big enough budget and doing the best that they could to spirt gum horns to Kyle Selig’s forehead. and while kyle does have blue eyes, in the close ups of Komos his eyes almost feel fake, they’re too blue, it looks like he’s wearing contacts. If monster high is smart enough, bold enough, to know that we think their budget is so low so thats the reason his sfx makeup looks so bad and we’re giving them a pass and trying to suspend our disbelief, but to have it actually be that the villain is hiding in plain sight and the “fake horns” ARE ACTUALLY FAKE... now i think that would actually impress me.

Those who know me know i’m a huge Holt and Jackson fan. And while i love twist villains and am excited to see what they do with Komos, im super disappointed because this most likely means that Holt and Jackson will not be coming back to monster high. they seem to be teasing a sequel and with the animated series as well i do think they could try to fit them in with a “oooo son of the villain” storyline, but I feel like they’re main ark is already being used. Dr. J and Mr. H are clearly a parallel for Clawdeen’s journey in being half monster half human and teaching the school how to accept both humans and monster (something i alway wished they had done with jackson and holt). And with the movie directly using their story there's really no need to bring in another J and H. If they did bring them back i feel like it would be a completely different version of them. 

Jackson and Holt will always live on in my memory. I’ll never forget my funky little boys, but unless by some miracle they reveal that Komos (if he does turn out to be Dr. J and Mr. H) has a secret teenage son. I really wanted so see Jackson and Holt with Ceci’s version of Frankie 😭. I just know they would have been the cutest couple OR AT LEAST FRIENDS!

I got some thoughts about the new monster high dolls, I grew up with this series I can't hold back anymore.

Draculaura- Cute! Keeps some of her original style while still modernizing it, the hair could be better though. The half pink half black look isn't bad at all, but the bangs are kinda off looking and I feel like keeping her hair wavy would be better. I also love that they made her shorter and chubby as well as making her pointed ears more prominent. Her face isn't bad but I wish they kept her heart-shaped beauty mark.

Clawdeen- I love that they gave her more werewolf-like features!! Again, they stayed relatively close to how the original dolls dressed but modernized them, clawdeen's outfit does look at little too busy though with the leopard on top of the stripes though. Again, the faces look too plain! They look too perfect and the eyes look to big, I do like her hair though.

Frankie- They look the best out of everyone!!!! I love the prosthetic leg and how it looks like they made them taller too!!! Their outfit looks exactly like something the original Frankie would wear and the platform shoes go perfectly. The hair clips are fine, not my favorite but my biggest gripe is the face, again. Compared to the rest, they look so pouty and where are the stitches????? Again, looks too perfect. I really like the inclusion of the blue in their hair.

Cleo- I've never been a big Cleo fan, but she looks really good and I actually kinda like her face. Her outfit has a lot of accessories and while I think they should have gone with a more turquoise blue than the light blue, it still works. Her hair could have been a bit better, I can make out some gold in it but not much. Face-wise I like that she has a lot more going on compared to the rest. But it still feels too perfect.

Lagoona- Whoever thought making her pink was a good idea should get penalized. Her name is Lagoona BLUE, she should be blue. The pink skin also just washes her out so much! They should've kept her blue and made her legs (which I like the idea but the execution wasn't great) a darker, shiny-metallic blue. They could've even made her pearl white and gave her a more iridescent look and I would've been more okay with that than the pink. She doesn't even look like she has webbed hands now!! And her fins should be more consistent color-wise which they might've not been able to do for mold reasons, so it's more excusable. Her hair is okay? The highlights should be brighter though, she's from Australia, specifically the great barrier reef, she's in a more tropical environment so she's gonna have brighter colors. I like her outfit though, it's sporty and modern, I don't like her earrings though. Her face works and I like the little spots they added around her eyes, she should have freckles though. The bigger eyes also work for her. And why did they make some dolls smile and others not???

Overall, I don't hate the reboot dolls, but I think they need to be better. The outfits are great and look better than I thought they would. The hair on the dolls is okay, but I think Draculaura and Lagoona's hair need changed. I love the new body types, the face molds and how the faces look need changed, they feel too plain and perfect. Also, why are only some of them smiling??? I think they managed to stay relatively close to how the original dolls looked while still giving them a more modern look.

I feel like it would've been better to keep how the original dolls looked, save for changing the body types to give Frankie her prosthetic, Draculaura short and chubby, modernized the clothes, and that's it. That's really all they had to do.

Monster High the Movie Review Part 1

A kind soul sent me the Monster High movie to review and I have some....thoughts. This WILL contain spoilers! So proceed with caution.

As your humble blogger I promise to give this movie a fair chance, I won’t blow it off because it’s Live Action or because it’s “new”… Monster High was all about celebrating differences, this means being open minded when presented with something unexpected. They change A LOT in this movie… some changes are good, some are not. I will do my best to contain my biases (undying love for G1 and raw seething hatred for G2) let’s GO!

The movie starts with some unknown person absolutely shredding at the local skate park they get bumped & fall and we see it's Clawdeen! once the humans see she's a wolf they chase her off saying how scary she was and that she "wasn't a girl, that's an animal!" she goes home to sulk and we learn it's her 15th birthday!

In this movie Clawdeen is half human. "But Jess! aren't ALL werewolves half human!?" Yes, yes they are... but in THIS movie monsterdom seems to be treated like ethnic heritage. We meet Clawdeens father! Apollo the human. Already I'm liking this set up a lot more than the Reboot (G2), she lives in a house instead of a cave, it's not crawling with puppies... This bodes well for the Relaunch*.

( * = I will be referring to 2016 as the Reboot and 2022 as the Relaunch to differentiate them with the 2010 debut series as the OG)

Clawdeen is the main character of this movie, which I think is pretty cool! Frankie had the reins for the OG run and Draculaura headed the Reboot (RIP Draculaura) so it's nice to see someone new take the lead! Clawdeen always has been leader of the pack!

However things fall apart right away as we learn that Clawdeen's father is making her a "Tofu & Jalapeño casserole with almonds" .... Why is Clawdeen.... a wolf and known carnivore getting tofu for her birthday dinner and not a steak? EXPLAIN!? A character eating tofu in media is usually shorthand for them being vegetarian, I hope that’s not what they are implying because a vegetarian diet will kill a wolf/dog.

Another implication that I don’t like is Clawdeen being an only child. Do you know how much Monster High falls apart if you remove the wolf pack!?!?! It’s POSSIBLE she’s not. We don’t know where her mom is (it’s implied she’s dead but first rule of Sci-Fi is no body = no death) so more kids could possibly, theoretically, maybe, be with her. I’m not holding out any hope, I’m just saying it’s possible. I'll even settle for them being her cousins.

Anyway.

Monster High is only accessible via a secret portal and you must now be accepted into Monster High with a letter carried by Gargoyle VS it just being a public school for monsters.

Before she leaves, Clawdeens father explicitly tells her that Monster High keeps humans out and that she should conceal her human heritage at all times.

We're introduced to everyone in the first song and OVER ALL? I like the look of the cast! Also “coming out of the dark” is a BOP!!! It’s not quite the anthem that “Fright Song” is but it’s WAY better than “How do you boo!”

Anyone in here know Latin!? I google translated what is on the insignia and it says "The knowledge of all the mountains within" ???

Edit: Clawdeena9 on YouTube was told at Vidcon that the insignia says "Monster Inside" or more literally "True Monster Heart"

SO the school itself is alive, it is a monster! it's also a dorm, which is not AS fun as the OG school but a lot more practical than the Reboot which had them living in a refurbished mansion.

Ceci Balagot didn't even audition for the role of Frankie, they just showed up to set and smiled and Mattel's casting director was like "that's our Frankie!" then someone on set was like "Ceci Balagot can't be Frankie! he's trans and non-binary!" and then the director was like "WELL THEN I guess Frankies non-binary now huh!?" and that is how we got our Non-binary simulacrum queen. Trust me, I was there.*

This version of Frankie isn't just made up of random body parts, she is made up of famous bodies and brains! her mind alone includes the likes of Einstein, Madam Curie, Plato and Elizabeth J. Feinler. How is she still in high school with body parts from grown ass adults? IDK but she looks like & has the mind of a teenager so we’re going to go with it!

Nayah Damasen as Draulaura is perfect casting, she's cute with just a hint of pedigree. Anyone mad that she's Filipina is getting hung up on the wrong things. "But Draculaura is Romanian! not Asian!!!!" First off, Romania is a location. There can be Filipino people born and raised in Romania. I'm confident half of you reading this are from America... are you Native American?... no?... then how are you American!? See how stupid that sounds. (also: Shout out to the like 4 Native followers I have, I got'chu!) Being angry that Draculaura isn't white is the most ridiculous BS you could possibly get mad over in a movie attempting to relaunch our beloved franchise. She’s adorable… she does however threaten to suck out Frankie & Clawdeen’s blood which… I’m not sure if it’s an empty threat or if she is no longer vegetarian. But if it’s the latter? I hate it.

Update: it is an empty threat, in Draculaura's music video she clearly states she is a vegetarian.

Frankie you can't just go into a vampires coffin! that's... rude? ... Invasive? I don't know what etiquette Vampires use for their coffins but Frankies question of "Do you view this as a house? or a bed?" was flippin' funny.

Everything that comes out of Frankies mouth is hilarious. They’re a curious little kitty! I also really like that they gave them mis-matched eye shadow to match Frankie’s Heterochromia! new fav! Ceci put their all into this role! their stilted movements really drive home the point that Frankie is new and not all parts cooperate well. *chefs kiss*

@undertakers-wife First of all, I'm glad to hear that my questions led you to considering new sides of your s/i. Please take your time with writing the answers and figuring out everything, I'm more than willing to wait for the sake of information.

So, speaking of Monster High...

Monster High is unironically one of the most important things that shaped my childhood and influenced me as a person. I immediately fell in love with it from the first time I saw the TV commercial and then when the dolls appeared in our stores. They are the reason I have come to love fashion and character design so much, as well as securing my interest in all things unconventional and macabre.

I have a small collection of dolls (If I'm not mistaken, I have 13 of them. I'm far from home right now, so I can't check) that are still in almost perfect condition, not counting a few lost accessories and the plastic of the pale-skinned dolls becoming yellow. Even now that I'm not giving them that much attention, I still treasure my collection.

I wish I had more dolls, but it was already such a struggle to get each one of them, mainly because my family used to hate them for being so "dark" and "scary" (if not straight up possessing "evil energy"...). But now they have become much more chill about them (for some reason, even my superstitious grandma started to like my dolls, after spending years being disgusted by them), so I'm planning on getting more. Which would be, unfortunately, no easier now than it was before because I'm only interested in Gen1.

I genuinely wanted to be as excited about the reboot as everyone else seems to be, but it turned out to be a complete miss for me. I guess it is a good show/toy line by itself, but I have absolutely no interest in it, preferring Gen1 in almost every way. There are some things that I like about Gen3, but my disappointment with the rest heavily outweighs them. Honestly, I have a lot of thoughts about Gen3 and I can't even begin to talk about it without it turning into a pages-long rant.

Oh well, at least Twyla's and Draculaura's new face molds are very pretty, so I consider buying them someday to restyle them.

It's hard to choose a favourite character since each one of them is great in their own way, but Toralei is the one closest to me. It's complicated because I love her and find her annoying at the same time, but it all comes down to the fact that I relate to her a lot.

I also appreciate Cleo as one of the most well-written characters of the franchise. I like her for being this over-dramatic and lowkey mean queen bee, while at the same time she's just so human (ha) and so sympathetic. Clawdeen is always a pleasure to see and I aspired to be a fashion designer just like her when I was younger. I also really enjoy diary versions of Venus, Spectra and Rochelle – cartoons did them dirty, they were so cool in diaries. Especially Spectra, diary version of her is such a bitch, I can't help but adore her. I'm also quite fond of Catty Noir and Catrin DeMew, for no other reason than thinking that they're neat.

But my first favourite character in Monster High was Frankie. I know that many fans find Gen1 Frankie to be annoying or bland, but there's something so charming about her. And she's much braver, smarter and more capable than people give her credit.

By the way, my biggest win so far was getting Frankie's basic doll. She was the first doll I set my eyes on when Monster High just appeared on the shelves and finally getting her years later was a triumph. Ironically, it was the last monster high doll I got, just before the first reboot.

Now I'm set on getting more Clawdeen dolls because I love almost all of her doll designs. I also want to get my hands on basic Draculaura because she's iconic, and basic Toralei because, well, it's Toralei. Okay, I have an extensive list of dream dolls, so I'm not going to write about them all here.

I can totally see Lilia liking Monster High – it's very much his style and he's not the type of person to get bothered about liking something "for kids". I think he could have gotten into it after someone pointed out to him that he's basically Draculaura's twin.

And I'm curious about your OCs – Monster High is the kind of setting where you can go all out when creating unique characters. Surprisingly, I myself only have one Monster High OC (which is also a self-insert), I have more of them in Ever After High.

its insensitive to reimagine disneys tiana as asian, not because asian people dont face racism or cant enjoy cooking or didnt exist in 1920s new orleans- but because tiana is the first and still only black disney princess and was written and designed as such. her race informs and deepens her writing and her struggles, her love for her dad and specifically wanting to validate a jim crow era black man's sacrifices for his family, her connection to him and her community through her cooking when they all struggle to keep food on the table. similarly mulan shouldnt be rebranded as african american, not because black women couldnt exist in china or never crossdressed to join the army or dont face misogyny- but because mulan is a folk hero of historical chinese legend and as mulan, specifically cannot be divorced from that background. (also, frankly? the early white princesses arent really as well written for the most part, and their culture of origin is virtually never taken into account aside from visuals in their development, if that).

thats what ticked me off so bad about the monster high reboot. nb frankie was so cool and an asian draculaura was so fun but then they just... took away the black girl? and by extension, her sisters and thus ALL the black girls and like, dude not cool? nothing wrong with her being latina but being afrolatina is a different experience than being african american. afrolatinas deserve rep but that doesnt mean they shouldve taken clawdeen from african american girls. then there was some back and forth as to where specifically draculaura's family is from, and lagoona's origins vary from source to source dolls vs movie vs tv too and you just really feel the lack of effort and cohesion in the writing rooms. it really is just all just numbers on a chart, quotas to be filled there.

even with shows like winx where its ambiguous at times and kind of a raceblind take at others, theres so little for ANY of us that redesigning without that in mind becomes poaching. why would you take when ive been given so precious little? why would you want to change this one gift from people like me that lets me know i'm seen and loved? sure, other people deserve to have that too but if they want to borrow then take those who have so much they wont even miss it?

Like it's so fucking weird to me!!! And GOD I wanted to say something about gen3 Clawdeen but I wasn't sure if I was "right" or if it was my place to say but exactly!! Being afrolatina is wonderful and they deserve representation too but it is still ultimately a different experience from being black american and they shouldn't have taken that away from black girls! I'm glad that mixed kids have her as rep now but they shouldn't have taken her away!! They very easily could've made a new character to fill that role instead!

AND YES to the winx point!! At the end of the day, it doesn't matter that some of the girls races or ethnicities are more ambiguous, they still have Canon races and people shouldn't be taking that away and giving it to someone else. That's not how representation works! Ever! Like if someone redesigned Aisha to be asian, that wouldn't make me happy or give me More representation. All that would be doing is taking away representation from black people! Same thing with Musa, Flora, Nabu, etc.

It also feels So fucking scummy when a white person's excuse is just that they Personally didn't see a character as their canonical race/ethnicity and that's why they changed it?? Like I don't give a shit if You personally don't see Nabu as an Indian man. That doesn't change his blatant coding. Same with characters like Flora who are more ambiguous. It doesn't matter if You Personally don't like her being Latina. She is. Fucking deal???

I was gonna leave Electrified alone but fuck it, this seemed like fun.

So Electrified's third act was uh... we'll say 'not amazing.' Me personally, I didn't care too much, but I've always been told my tastes are questionable at best. In any case, I wanted to try my hand at rewriting this.

We start at the power plant turned salon. The lights are flickering and the Ghoul Squad are trying their best to keep the normies calm. Suddenly, a hand bursts out of the floor, followed by another, and another. In no time at all, Moanica and her zomboys have everybody surrounded. She looks around at the normies, terrified and screaming because of what's happening. Moanica smirks.

"Are you scared, normies? Well, you should be! Because monsters and zombies are real! And tonight, under the cover of perpetual darkness, me and my zomboys are going out into your world to show you what happens when you force us to hide in the shadows!

"It is time that you normies finally learn your place..."

She reaches towards the nearest human and gives them a slow scratch across the cheek. In seconds a new zombie joins Moanica's zomboys.

"Under me."

The zomboys attack, capturing humans so that Moanica can turn them and repeat the cycle. The Ghoul Squad tries to protect the normies, but Moanica opens trap doors under them all and sends them down to her lair.

Down below, Frankie isn't doing too hot. They're (I'm sorry, I know G1 and G2 use she/her but I'm too used to G3 Frankie) glowing like a radioactive Lite Brite and their eyes are shining like high beams. They try to move, but they can barely lift their arms.

"So...much...electricity..."

Znap flies over to its creator, unsure of how to help, when a bolt of electricity shoots out from one of Frankie's... well, bolts and hits Znap. The little electricity being begins absorbing some of Frankie's excess power. Not enough to overload or hurt itself, but enough so that Frankie can at least move. Maybe Twyla gets hit with a little and gets her Electrified design, idk.

Now that Frankie's a little better, the ghouls explain what happen, and they all set out to Normie Town to stop Moanica.

When they get there, it looks like something out of a zombie movie. Zombies new and old shuffle through the cul-de-sac, looking for humans to bring to their leader. None of the ghouls know what to do, but Frankie has an idea. Or at least a part of one.

The zombies are essentially reanimated corpses, right? And Frankie was brough to life with it, so maybe, just maybe they can restart the zombies hearts with a little power.

(Look, it's a stretch and I doubt G2 would have brought up stopped hearts or reanimation, but it's the best I got)

Lagoona, Ari, and Twyla distract Moanica while Frankie, Cleo, Draculaura, and Clawdeen begin rounding up all of the zombies. Once they're sure everybody is there, Frankie warns there friends to hit the dirt, then unleashes enough of their electricity to hit all of the zombies.

When the sparks die down, the ghouls are pleased to see that the humans are all back to normal. Even the zomboys Moanica already had are back to their old selves. Of course, there's a chance they'll all turn back, but that's a problem for another day.

Moanica, alone and defeated, runs for the hills, promising to come back another day. Frankie takes a deep breath and releases the rest of their electricity. With the power restored and the zombies defeated, the Ghoul Squad heads home before the normies begin looking for someone to blame.

A few days later, the ghouls are cleaning the salon and listening to a normie radio reporting what happened. Everybody is worried that this might mean the end of Monster High, or worse, another Great Fright Flight. Draculaura tries to be optimistic, but even she's worried about the future.

Clawdeen laments the loss of her dream, only for Twyla to come bursting in with a group of humans, one smaller than the crowd seen in the actual movie. They saw the Ghoul Squad fighting to rescue them and figured that maybe not every monster is like Moanica. It'll probably be a long time before the normies are okay around monsters, but this is a good start.

From there, it would probably lead into a third movie, likely taking place after Adventures of the Ghoul Squad, though the only thing I can think of is Ghouls Rule without the normies nearly executing somebody. Maybe there would be a different antagonist? Just to give Moanica a break? idk

My updated Monster High: The Movie thoughts and opinions! (Spoilers ahead!)

With the movie releasing just a few days ago, I have some new things I wanna talk about after watching it and also throw out some things that I liked and disliked. 

We’ll start off with the things I thought were good about the movie!

First and foremost, The overall look and aesthetics of the sets and scenery was spot on! It truly felt like a monster world should. From the monster world portal and school itself to the Coffin Bean, everything was so perfectly eerie without screaming over the top halloween-esque.

The costumes for the lead characters were really good! I appreciate that there were multiple costumes for most of the characters and that despite initial impressions from promo material, the first costumes the leads wear are super cute!

The relationship Between Clawdeen and her dad, Apollo, was very sweet even though we only got to see a tiny bit of it thru the whole movie.

Frankie was so funny and loveable while still having some great heartfelt moments, they were my favorite character in the movie. I like that the movie made them feel new while still keeping the original charms of OG Frankie!

The music was catchy! I was a little wary about the movie being a musical, but I do think the songs were great for what the movie actually turned out to be!

The plot twist of Mr. Komos actually being Jekyll/Hyde’s son was actually unexpected for me and I thought it was a clever idea and was even hinted at in one of his costumes.

I’m actually kind of excited for the sequel that was teased at the end because I am like 90% sure that the person looking at the crystal ball is Clawdeen’s mother, Selena.

The nails are very reminiscent of Clawdeen’s monster form claw-nails, plus it would make sense for a werewolf who doesn’t know about the changes at Monster High to want something to do with a vampire who knows magic.

And now that we’ve covered some of the good stuff, it’s time for my complaints about the bad stuff...

To start, they should have had all of the Ghoulfriends be part of the main group! It really made me sad to see them hype up Lagoona, Abbey and Ghoulia in the promo material just for them to barely be part of the movie. They destroyed any character potential they could have had by making them meaningless side characters. 

The original appeal of the series was that they were a big group of best friends despite their many differences in personality and appearance. In the movie, none of them have anything that makes them special and unique, they all just feel like the same character with different clothes. 

A few examples of butchered characters:

THEY MASSACRED MY GIRL GHOULIA! They made her into some random prankster tiktok girl and took away all the smarts and sweetness that made her special. She seems like an after thought that the producers had when they realized they needed to pad out some time with comedic relief and pointless side commentary. Like during the first graveyard scene, how did Ghoulia not realize that Draculaura was already there and why did she not report Drac, Clawdeen and Frankie to Bloodgood for breaking the curfew?

And as for Abbey, she had one line in the entire movie. She was basically non-existent compared to how important and how much she was in the original series.

I’m also super sad to see Lagoona reduced to Cleo’s lackey and essentially replacing Ghoulia herself as Cleo’s best friend. They could have done some really interesting things with her, but they decided to give her little to no attention at all. I was really hoping they would do something with all the watery effects we saw with her promotion images.

As for a couple of the lead characters, I don’t like the changes they made to Draculaura’s personality. Wile they could have kept some of the new aspects, like the pressure she feels from her family to be the perfect vampire, they should have kept her as the kind and sensitive character she was in previous iterations of MH.

And Cleo was never a mean girl! While she could be vain and over dramatic in past series, she was still very friendly and generous to her friends and others.

While I liked the Jekyll/Hyde twist, Komos was an awful villain and his “betrayal” would have been more impactful if we had actually gotten a chance to know and connect to him, but instead, he was just kinda there when the plot needed a villain that wasn’t Cleo. While it’s to be expected from a movie like this, the entire conflict and rapidly following resolution was extremely disappointing.

It sucks that Jackson Jekyll and Holt Hyde can’t be part of the series anymore since they were totally scrapped and replaced by Komos.

A lot of the background characters were so ugly, they could have made them look so much better and more monster-like without taking attention away from the main cast.

and the worst thing about this movie.... NO FRIGHT SONG! NOT A SINGLE NOTE OF IT! 

My final thoughts on Monster High: The Movie are while it definitely was not a perfect movie, it was still enjoyable to watch even with some of it’s flaws, which is a sentiment that can be related back to every past generation of monster high movies, and when/if they do make a sequel, I really hope that the entire Ghoulfriends group is able to have a moment to shine instead of there being just the three that already had their time.

Points for the new MH:

More than one character has prescription glasses, yah! (However they keep forgetting to add them and are for the sole purpose of making the character “nerdy”.)

More freckles. Always a plus.

Cleo is a medium brown instead of just tan: 👍🏼

They seem to not be completely abandoning lagoonas’ sporty girl aes?? Hopefully?

Draculaura is chubby! (At least in comparison) more body types is great especially for fashion focused franchises

Frankie has a mechanical leg! Legitimately love this addition

Frankie is also nonbinary here which is something I think most fans agree fits them/her (it pronouns would be fun but I don’t think we’re there yet😔)

I think a lot more energy + passion is going into the gen than the last one, like I think people are having fun working on it

P sure they chose draculaura as the “chubby” girl of the group bc she’s hyper feminine therefore redeemable on that front, but also that her signature with Lolita fashion covers common “problem areas” so they can still hide her new figure. I’m probably just a little too jaded but I’m worried any other character being given the same body type will suffer fashion wise 🫣

I heard they made lagoona Latina (cool) but why is she pink (white ppl skin color) 🤔

They took away lagoonas signature waves and missed the opportunity to give clawdeen legitimately curly hair, this is prejudiced (jk not jk)

im gonna assume you're talking about the new monster high movie i mentioned earlier, if you're talking about the horror movie i apologize bc I'm semi stupid, also if you are talking about the horror movie i'll also make a post about that bc i have a lot of thoughts on the IT movies, ALSO I LOVE THIS BC I LOVE REVIEWS SO MUCH!!! i love ranting about stupid movies and ranting about things in general! feel free to ask any opinion on movies or games!!! now introducing, my VERY shitty review of Monster High: the movie (spoilers i guess) so the story starts with clawdeen, who is a werewolf, going skating, shes wearing a hoodie and stuff to hide that shes a werewolf because she doesnt belong in the human realm or something i cant remember tbh, eventually she bumps into someone and its revealed, whoopsies, she runs off home where we meet her dad (who is a human) and apparently its her 15th birthday or something, she tells her dad that she got accepted to monster high but hes kind of ehhh about it at first bc like they are against humans/half-humans eventually he gives in and she can go, woo meets frankie and draculaura who shes roommates with, meets deuce too bc romance i guess, apparently her mom was like a well respected person at monster high (her moms dead) so principal bloodgood asks her to perform a speech, also has some talk about the school being anti-human and stuff, however clawdeen feels like she belongs at monster high and is kind of nervous bc she's not fully human clawdeen discovers that when shes scared/nervous she begins transforming into a human they have a talk about jekyll and hyde in class at some point, big reveal is that the teacher who taught that class is hyde's son, hates monster high and wants to destroy it and humans because they killed his dad, stuff like that, enough with the bad summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ all around the movie was like an average disney channel movie tbh, girl doesn't feel like she belongs anywhere, finally finds a place where she belongs, conflict, stuff like that things i did enjoy were the friendships between frankie, draculaura and clawdeen, i thought it was cute and sweet non-binary frankie was something i also liked a lot! however i am quite sad about no lesbian clawdeen (also about them making her and deuce like each other but we'll get to that) i did like a lot of the outfits actually! frankie had outfits i would totally wear, and draculaura! very goregeous (fuck you Grammarly for correcting) the music wasn't awful, none of the songs stuck with me really but they didn't burn my ears i guess tbh i thought the set looked neat too things i did not enjoy however were the relationship between deuce and clawdeen, they didn't officially start dating or anything but it has been said they like each other, i didn't particularly feel any chemistry between them they fully removed the rest of the wolf family, did not like that some of the makeup was kinda eh but that might just be me being picky, the makeup around deuce's eyes looked very orange, and draculaura's makeup was a bit too toned down for my taste but yet again, might be me being picky ghoulia yelps in this movie- she wasn't a major character, only appeared like a few times however i didn't like that they made her talk, idk just didnt really sit right with me? the villain twist at the end was lame, they have a jekyll/hyde character in the monster high universe???? do jackson and holt mean nothing???? but i saw the twist coming, idk if they wanted us to see it coming but like i saw it idk its 2 am and im rambling, yet again please tell me if im rambling about the wrong movie! maybe i'll actually be well rested then kindly ignore how shitty my reviews are i was mostly spewing out words
