DARTH VADER #11 written by Charles Soule art by Giuseppe Camuncoli and Daniele Orlandini “Poor sadistic monster, doesn’t know himself at all.  Dying to fight.  Dying to die.” There are times when Darth Vader seems like a bundle of contradictions–one minute, he’s making the Inquisitors stronger through the same pain he suffered, that it birthed him into the monster he is now, they’ll go through the same process and come out stronger for it, the next he’s unwilling to give up his status as the only technological terror around here. And these things can go hand in hand together because this is Anakin Skywalker, he’s never really known himself (never wanted to put in the painful self-examination that would entail, never wanted to give up the things he would have to give up if he really looked at them, all the disastrous lack of self-discipline and emotions run out of control) and he doesn’t really see the Inquisitors as a threat, their potential is limited.  Especially, in his mind, because they were once Jedi and, oh, well, of course that makes them lesser. He wants so badly to fight another Jedi and this is all part of a bigger theme of what I’m seeing with Darth Vader as these comics and novels go along–that they’re not just underscoring that this was a choice for Anakin (though, they are very much underscoring that) but also that he is in deep, deep denial about that he has a choice and about who he still is and always will be. One of the biggest climaxes of the entire Star Wars saga is

Luke Skywalker:  “I’ve accepted the truth, that you were once Anakin Skywalker, my father.” Darth Vader:  ”That name no longer has any meaning for me.” Luke Skywalker:  “It is the name of your true self. You’ve only forgotten.”

This is all playing on that theme, about Anakin’s denial of who he is and what he actually wants.  He works so very hard to pretend Anakin Skywalker is dead, all that’s left is Darth Vader.  He works so very hard at pretending that there’s no other path for him, that he can see other Jedi have chosen other paths, he can see that vision the kyber crystal gave him about killing Sidious and finding Obi-Wan and asking for an end to all of this.  He cannot stand the thought of everything he betrayed, murdered, and lost was for nothing, so he throws everything of himself into this path, telling himself and the crystal, “No, this is all there is.” But underneath all of that, way down deep, he knows that there is another choice, another path.  He knows that and he wants to die because of everything he gave up and it’s not worth it.  But no one will kill him, the only person strong enough to do it would never, so he has to force those thoughts down where only an empath of the highest calibre can find them anymore, where only someone who doesn’t know what he’s done, only what he can feel in his father, can believe in. He wants another Jedi to fight, because maybe this Jedi will finally be able to kill him, because if he can kill all the Jedi, there will be none left to remind him of what else was possible, because then he won’t have to think about the horrors that he’s done and how wrong they were, because then it won’t be possible for him to go back, if there’s no one left who would forgive him and accept him again.
