Hey guys. I've previously posted about Nancy Ng (who is sadly still missing) and I wanted to provide an update. You can also keep updated at helpusfindnancy on Instagram which is run by her family and this is from their gofundme updates, please consider donating if you're able.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP: In March, our family worked on a video with Kendall Rae, an advocate for missing persons and their families. We'd like to thank Kendall and her incredible team for covering Nancy’s story. They did such an amazing job covering the details of Nancy’s case and published the most comprehensive video on Nancy’s case to date. We are blown away by the support from Kendall’s audience, who have not only sent over 1,000 emails to Ambassador Bradley, but have also put the spotlight on the Ministerio Publico and U.S. Embassy in their roles in Nancy’s case via X (formerly Twitter). Our family continues to be immensely grateful for the online community being one of our biggest supporters and advocates during this time. Thank you for helping our voices be heard and for not letting Nancy be forgotten. After kayaking out into the lake, she disappeared in an alleged drowning incident. The one and only person who witnessed Nancy’s drowning has been uncooperative, and there are now allegations that a bribe occurred to have her statement omitted from the police report. This person then left the country without aiding in search efforts and has refused to cooperate with the family and search teams. It is my understanding that you have the power to escalate Nancy’s case to the appropriate authorities in Guatemala because, as it stands, little is being done to investigate her disappearance. Please help her and her family. I am asking that you please: - Request that Guatemalan authorities ask U.S. officials, such as the FBI, for assistance in this investigation. The United States has resources that would prove incredibly valuable to this investigation, as well as in the search for Nancy’s body. - Facilitate a conversation between the Ng family and someone in Guatemala who is actively working the case. Their family is not receiving relevant case information from the prosecutor. Please help connect them with someone with more information regarding the status and details of Nancy’s case. - Lastly - I am asking that you please not forget that Nancy was human. She was a sister, a daughter, a teacher, and a friend. All her loved ones want is to know what happened and to bring her home to lay her to rest. hi, everyone! i've been trying to look around for posts on this, but can't find very many so i figured i'd make one on my own. something introduced by rubio and someone else called the lacey act has been snuck into the COMPETES act, which has already been passed in the house. it has yet to be passed in the senate.
the lacey act criminalizes ANYONE who transports (i.e travels with) any sort of non-domesticated animal across state lines. this includes everything from fish to hamsters, or from bunnies to lizards. the animals not included are dogs, cats, and farm animals. this will make it so that i and other exotic pet owners are bound to a certain state. this is very stressful for many, many reasons, but one is that good exotic vets are very hard to find, and it's common for people to have to drive to a neighboring state for vet visits. for types of pets that are naturally more prone to sickness, such as rats or fish, frequent vet visits are a necessity. some types of exotic pets (such as rats or bunnies) also require a great deal of care, and it is extremely hard to find pet babysitters, so it makes more sense to take them whenever traveling. for example, for me, my parents live in a different state, and i take my rats with me when i go. the lacey act will make it so that i can't visit them. a year ago, i had to travel to another state for one of my rats' surgeries. there weren't many good vets nearby, and the ones that were close were very, very expensive. thankfully, my parents live close to the state border, so the journey was only half an hour! if the lacey act had been in effect then, i would've had to pay double or triple the cost that i did, which would've brought me up to around $400 for the visit alone. however, i was lucky to have a good vet nearby if that had been the case: what will happen to people’s pets when they don't have any good vets close to them in their state if something life-threatening happens? pets could quite literally die because of this.
the logistics of the bill overall are not thought through very well. for example, if an animal isn’t native to florida, the bill could potentially make it so that it’s not only illegal to transport that animal out of florida, but out of other states like, say, ohio or illinois. i can’t even begin to emphasize how stressful this is for pet owners. there are so many other reasons aside from the ones i outlined above as to why this is a very terrible idea. please, please contact your senators. this link has more information on the bill and a template for a letter to your senator. there is also a list of arguments you can use in a letter, so i’d encourage you to write your own letter or modify the template to avoid being reported for spam, etc. 
i don’t want to guilt people or do an instagram infographic sort of thing, but the feeling among a lot of exotic pet owners right now is that we are fucked so i would appreciate some reblogs. frankly at this point there’s not much we can do aside from contacting senators :(
tldr: the lacey act is a rider bill on the COMPETES act and it makes it so that no one in the united states can travel with exotic animals across state lines, which will harm exotic pet owners immensely in many different ways. it’s been passed in the house and has yet to in the senate. this link can help u write a letter to your senators if u live in the us

Hi Alabaster, could you tell us a bit about yourself? Where are you in the world and what does your day to day look like?
Hi Here, I live in Los Angeles. Depending on what or where I’m working, I might work from home one day on drawings and comics, or go to my workshop where I make things out of concrete and recycled plastic, tile, and wood.
How did you get into drawing and making art!
I’ve always done it. My parents have comics I made when I was 3, before I could even write (I dictated and my Dad did the lettering).

Tell us a little bit about the room template that you made! What inspired it?
My house and my plants! I have about 200 plants in my apartment. Also, I love cinderblocks. I use them to make shelving or as plant pedestals a lot.
What are some of the projects that you were super excited to work on so far?
Ahhh, I always have like 6 or 7 projects I’m working on. I’m trying to develop a painting practice; like the drawings I do but way bigger. I have a work space that is not my house for the first time ever so I’m exploring bigger, messier work, which is so fun. In 2021 I serialized a 60 page comic on instagram, posting 2 pages every other day, and that was really exciting, reading people’s feedback as the comic was made.

Who are some of your favorite artists on the internet right now?
Because I’ve been teaching myself how to recycle plastic into art, I’m excited to have made internet-friends with cooltrashnet and funky_alchemy who are making innovative work out of similar materials and processes.
What are some of the things you would tell your younger self? Are there anything that you would like to know earlier in your life as an artist?
Actually nothing! Looking back, I think I’ve learned and grown and evolved in ways I’m proud of and also feel like they've taken the right amount of time. If I could redo my 20s, I’d take myself dancing more. I was too shy to do that alone until my 30s.

What are some of the anxieties that you have around being an artist and being online?
Being very visible online opens me up to a lot of stressful situations. I used to enjoy interacting with anyone who wanted to message me but I’ve had to turn those features off, which is unfortunate. I want people to enjoy and relate to my work but I try to stay completely away from pandering. It can be really easy to let that seep into your work, and then you are making work you know will get shared instead of work that is meaningful to you. Most of the paid work I get is from people seeing my art on social media, so this is difficult to avoid. I wind up having to sacrifice money for integrity, and the United States is a very harsh place in which to make this choice. But most online spaces are free, so the barrier for entry to start making and posting art and interacting with other artists is low.
What takes the most of your time in your day to day?
I spend way too much time poking and prodding at my plants when I should be working

What are you some of the things that you are working on that you’re excited about right now?
I’ve taken a small break from comics to explore material art but I think I’m going to return to comics soon.
Are there anything that you are looking forward to for the coming year?
Just hoping for a time when going out and being around other people feels safe again, it won’t be this year. Maybe next year

The campaigns are housed in a brand new, progressive system that facilitates fast-paced and fluid gameplay. The system rests on the following seven main features:
A realistic, d20 compatible 2d10 system with low numbers. We believe that by using the result of rolls with 2d10s, we can eliminate some of the radical distribution of values often associated with d20s. This makes "Nat20" rolls even more epic and memorable, since their chance decrease from 5% to 1%.
We use a three-dimensional (race, class, archetype) character creation system, where by removing the traditional "alignment" aspect of characters and introducing the archetype system, well-rounded personalities can be created and played out.
The Atlas system allows for completely free character advancement, even maxing out a single stat is possible, though not encouraged by the system. It favors balanced characters and allows unique combinations of strengths and weaknesses.
Subsystems for NPC interactions, that allow overcoming obstacles by not only violent means. These make social interactions and investigations as enjoyable and manageable as combat encounters, resulting in immersive role-playing.
The XP system supports actual role-playing, not only combat.
The combat system is fast-paced and not roll-heavy. Alongside customary mechanics for damage distribution, it also emulates the dynamic physical positioning of combat participants. Combat maneuvers, boosts, and the decisions made in a fight scene this way become a fun activity instead of brainless rolls and damage calculation. Aiding our teammates and getting them in position come with substantive strategic rewards.

Frankly speaking, ATLAS- Rise or Die, is not one but THREE unique books merged into one revised and united volume.
The first part is the Corebook which contains the basics of the game. This includes descriptions, explanations, added tables, and examples. All the presented sub-systems represent one, merged system that can be used as a core for any alternative games. It is with 5th Edition and with d20 system also compatible.

The second section is the Player's Handbook. This contains detailed information for players to create their character through the Handbook's unique 3D character creation system. Roles, Races, paths, highlighted classes, and much more are included in this book. Atlas – Rise or Die is more than another boring remake. Our goal is to bring back the atmosphere of classic game sessions in a unique new format, never seen before, through a completely modern, fresh, and trendy gamebook.

We are aiming to evoke a retro, vintage feeling with our design, all the while using high-quality, contemporary graphics, that would not have been possible in the ’80s.
Our own 2d10 system is less random and unpredictable than the classic d20, but it offers the same ease when it comes to calculation and keeping track of events. By using two ten-sided dice, average rolls are more frequent and exceptional rolls, like natural 20s, even more valuable - but is with D&D 5th Edition compatible.
We were adamant to retain as much as we can from the proven template of classic sword & sorcery RPGs while adding a few twists to make them better suited for the brutal world of Atlas. Our elves for example are sickly, degenerate nobles who rule their people through intrigue. Their savage relatives are bloodthirsty head-hunters, protecting their ancient forests and hunting down all intruders. The dwarves are tyrannical conquerors at the head of an enslaved populous, dwelling in underground fortresses, that they call cities. They often make deals with subterranean creatures only to have their aid in their territorial clan wars.
The fast-paced, narrative, and tactical combat system goes a lot further than the classic, "attack roll–damage roll" format. The combat maneuvers infused in attacks alongside the collected bonuses make combat less hectic, more enjoyable, and realizable.
It is not only the lovers of fight sequences who can find something to please them. We have developed influence and intuition systems to support non-combat situations, which give flexible frameworks for meaningful interactions, information-trade, and realizing player goals through NPCs.
In the world of Atlas, everything is about brutality and blood sacrifice, and so it is with our magic system. It is optimized for coming up with unique combinations, while it supports the creation of your own spells. Magic twists and drains its user, should they become too greedy, the price could easily become their lives.

It’s a question zoomer parents may have to address should the world survive long enough. It may even be a question parents are having to address today, Instagram stating in December of 2020 that one million users share memes on the app everyday. (Ahmed, 2020)
In thinking about the question of the origin of memes I found myself watching, Are Memes & Internet Culture Creating a Singularity? published by the PBS Idea Channel.
In the video the argument is made that meme’s are often shared with no expectation of compensation and no further context provided, removing them from the who, what and why of their creation resulting in them being made in a way that feels like automation. Meme’s just appear and are, made and presented by the machine that is the internet. The video places the thinking in context, introducing the idea of a technological singularity, technology making better versions of itself, with some level of artificial intelligence developing, and argues that internet culture looks very similar. (2012) A cultural event happens, (like this still of Gene Wilder playing the titular character from the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory)

While there is clearly a personal slant or input present in the creation of these types of memes there is also a sense of automation. The PBS Idea Channel Video points out that memes are being made by people acting like computers, following rules, and working within a format. (2012) I’m sure if the video was being made in the past 12 months there would have been an entire section dedicated to tik tok and the way that many popular stars get their start or base their whole presence on the app by participating in challenges set by others, doing dance trends choreographed by someone else or lip-syncs using sounds created by another user.
So are we at a point of cultural singularity? And what does that mean for us who not only absorb media but also create it. Are we doomed to slowly be removed from our work as our influence slowly becomes less and less apparent till all we produce are carbon copies of what has come before with some small trace amount of our personality? In reading about memes, I came across the chapter Replication, Parataxis, and Evolution: Meme Journeys through the movement of a Mozart Sonata (Jan, 2011). In this chapter the author explains that the word ‘meme’ was first used by Charles Darwin. Where genes are passing on genetic information memes pass on cultural information. Following this thinking Jan states that “musical memes exist as short patterns of pitches and/or rhythms or as brief harmonic progressions, each with sufficient perceptual-cognitive identity and closure to survive as discrete units of information over time.” (2011) Following this thinking we could call the |I |V |vi |IV | chord progression, the Kick, kick snare pattern from We will rock you and the break from The Honey Drippers’ ‘Impeach the President’ could all be considered memes. So, if memes have been around forever in music, why didn’t I hear the word until 2010? The Idea Chanel Points out that while culture has always built culture before, never has the internet been as prevalent in culture as it is now. (2012) The internet grants people access to so many ‘memes or elements that can be combined into memes that where someone would create a ‘meme’ and call it a song or a progression or a work of art, now they are considered cheap, low-brow entertainment. As a creative, working from this definition everything I have made could be considered a meme at a stretch (as a musician I work in the western 12 tone equal tempered system, the system under which most of the western music has been composed and a meme in itself) and so what does that mean for me as I think about releasing my artistic expression through my work.
In a world where memes are created, shared and forgotten about so quickly, being a creator can be difficult. On one hand there is the temptation to make things that will get clicks because in the age of the internet, clicks equals success and sometimes money. On the other hand, there is a creative passion that can feel stifled by rules and trying to adhere to what other people are doing. This is a question I myself have struggled with as a musician and performer. Jan offers this, “memes are… selfish, in the sense that those memes which are the most striking and imitable are, self-evidently, those that tend to prosper in the meme-pool.” (2012) Yes, all music is based on something else, and no one is truly original, these are concepts that have been well talked about by musicologists and arts theorists en large for some time now. But, in the production of our work, our ‘memes’ if you will, as we incorporate the cultural elements, we hold dear, using our own creativity to shape them into new work, in the meme pool, in our culture, the things that prosper are still being striking and bold, being something others want to imitate.

Week 6: Digital Citizenship and Health Education - Body modification on Visual Social Media
This week we reviewed the topic of ‘Digital Citizenship and Health Education, specifically body modification and Aesthetic Templates on Social Media. Body modification is a form of 'Aesthetic Templates' on Instagram and was a term I discovered in one of the readings. This particular reading exemplifies the idea that people interested in body modification are "shopping" for aesthetic templates. Aesthetic templates were essentially created by microcelebrities and are universally popular throughout social media, especially Instagram. You may know microcelebrities as social media influencers and/or models who promote products to their followers and fans for commercial gain. 
What is visual social media?
Visual social media is a form of marketing and is the practice of using video, images and other visual content (like infographics) to help your messages stand out from the noise and clutter to more effectively reach your audience. It's a system that's worth adopting. ("What Is Visual Social Media Marketing (And How Does It Raise Engagement)? [INFOGRAPHIC]", 2021)
What is public health? 
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines public health as “the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts of society.” ("Public health services", n.d.)
How social media affects public health: 
Social media has become a cost-effective way for the public health practice to inform audiences of health issues, enhance communication during public health emergencies or outbreaks, and respond to public reporting of a particular public health issue. ("Social Media in Public Health: Strategies to Distill, Package, and Disseminate Public Health Research", 2020). 
Public Health’s role in the pandemic:
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, public health organisations have made good use of social media to inform the public about the disease and help individuals globally control the spread of the virus. With technology always evolving, digital technologies such as IOS apps have become more advanced and influential in the past decade, but more so since the COVID-19 pandemic. 
Since week one of this Digital Communities unit, I have concluded that Social Media is influential in many ways; from being a tool for political communication and engagement, to spreading awareness and promoting activism, evolving social movements in our society, and now in week 6, a device to inform the public about health.
I use social media every day, for fun and to socialise but also for educational purposes. Something I appreciate a lot about engaging with social media is interacting with news and information concerning public health and health in general. There are a few apps I use but the one that comes to mind that has been especially useful is the COVIDSafe app. This app was mainly helpful last year during the pandemic's peak and I don't use it anymore as there hasn't been any active covid cases where I live. "The COVIDSafe app is a tool that helps identify people exposed to coronavirus (COVID-19). This helps us support and protect you, your friends and family." Without the help of technology, finding close contacts relies on people: being able to recall everyone they have been in close contact with and knowing their contact details. ("COVIDSafe app", 2020)

Effective Public Health Social Media Campaigns
According to current statistics, there are 2271 million people use Facebook, 326 million Twitter, 1000 million Instagram and 287 million use Snapchat. ("The World's Best Public Health Social Media Campaigns - Bang The Table", n.d.). As a result, public health campaigns increasingly compete for people’s attention and seek to influence their behaviour through these social media channels. But this requires continually adapting to trends.
#Loveyourcervix Campaign

The objective for the #loveyourcervix campaign is to make young women who may feel embarrassed about the appearance of their vulva not embarrassed as a lot of young women avoid having a cervical screening for that reason. The campaign is intended to promote body positivity and remind women “that smear takers have seen hundreds of vulvas!” Women that attend for cervical screening when they are first invited aged 25 are more likely to attend in the future, significantly reducing their risk of developing cervical cancer." (Public Health Wales).
Mental health related campaigns
Mental health has become a popular subject for social media campaigns. More and more people are willing and wanting to be open and share their personal experiences with the world on their social media pages. Individuals also want to get involved in tackling the stigma associated with talking about mental health.

#HereForYou Campaign (Instagram) 
A one-minute campaign video featured three Instagram users talking about their past struggles with eating disorders, depression and suicidal thoughts.

Man Therapy Campaign 
Another campaign that promotes mental health is the Man Therapy campaign. It is based in Colorado, USA and is aimed at working-aged men (24-54 years old) who account for the largest number of suicide deaths in the U.S. These men are also the least likely to receive any kind of support. They don't talk about it with their friends. They don't share with their family. And they sure as heck don't seek professional treatment. They are the victims of problematic thinking that says mental health disorders are unmanly signs of weakness. ("Man Therapy | Men's Mental Health Resources", n.d.).

The campaign features a fictional character named Rich Mahogany, who provides “manly mental health tips” in humorous videos. The Men Therapy campaign was also created to counter the myth that strong men don’t need to reach out for help.

Body modification on Visual Social Media
Aesthetic templates and Aesthetic Labour 
‘Aesthetic templates’ refer to: poses, accessories, props or body work. 
Aesthetic templates are linked to digital influencer brands that often promote unhealthy body image ideals. 
Aesthetic Labour:
In workplace settings, workers enact aesthetic labour by embodying attributes that will resonate with customers for commercial benefit (Dean, 2005; Witz, Warhurst & Nickson, 2003)
Examples of Aesthetic Labour include: 
- Smiling with sincerity 
- Dressing in a suit and tie 
- Using particular body language and hand gestures 
As you can see in the image below of this model, she is not only using body language and hand gestures to demonstrate bodywork and aesthetic labour, but she’s also smiling with sincerity as she promotes a Bondi Boost product.

These images of these Instagram influencers/models also depict bodywork through a range of behaviours that alter their physical appearance; either online, through editing or physically in the offline world. Bodywork is evident in these influencer's photos as these women have all used body language and angles to make their bodies appear a certain way in which helps them gain attention from their viewers.
Pornification 
Pornification emphasises heteronormative standards of beauty and sexuality.
It has become normalised within western societies to display sexuality that reflects the aesthetics of commercial pornography (Tyler & Quek, 2016; Lynch, 2012; Drenten & Gurrieri, 2019)
Pornification is about portraying a heteronormative display of sexuality or 'porn chic' aesthetic oriented towards a male audience (Drenten & Gurrieri, 2019)
For social media users, selfies are often the result of work understood as sexualised labour (Drenten & Gurrieri, 2019)

Imagery like these is only a few examples of what my Instagram feed is flooded with. Highly sexualised images like these are shaping 'influence' on social media platforms, especially on Instagram. The main reason that influencers are posting content like this, posed and with barely any clothes on is because these kinds of images help them gain the most amount of attention and following. The body plays a pivotal role in influencers' posts, and one of the easiest ways for women to gain attention on social media is through a highly sexualised aesthetic, which is increasingly pornified. These women tend to conform to stringent standards of attractiveness and femininity for attention gain.
Here is an example of an influencer, Tammy Hembrow who uses the ‘aesthetic template’ to promote this "aminos & energy" product to her followers for commercial benefit. This pornified image is purely to grab her viewer's attention for a brand deal.

As you can see in the image above of Tammy Hembrow, she is posing in a way that highlight her lower body through body language, to accentuate her curves. 
Aesthetic Templates - Masculinity: 
Despite all this focus on women being pornified, pornification is also relevant to men but the reasons differ... 
Whilst women tend to focus on accentuating their curves through body language, men are also exposed for provocative poses, but this is mainly enacted by gay men. The underlying difference is that men aren’t nearly as popular as women when it comes to gaining attention on social media for their pornified poses.

Implications for Public Health: 
Some public health campaigns promote aesthetic templates to promote body image ideals. This advertisement by Protein World presents a female model in her bikini, accompanying writing that states, “Are you beach body ready?” The ad implies that women have to have that body type, a body that society depicts as "perfect", then you're not "beach ready". This ad is not only offensive and promotes body-shaming, but it’s also encouraging poor self-esteem and body image, especially for younger women who are most likely already feeling too insecure to go to the beach.

These advertisements and public ‘health campaigns’ are also linked to Body Dysmorphia (BDD) and Identity Dissonance due to individuals comparing themselves to “the perfect body” online, leading them to feel “distressed about a particular body part to the point where it interferes with daily life (Phillips, 2009).
