As we commemorate his birth anniversary, it's crucial to reflect on the bravery and selflessness that define the spirit of our armed forces.
Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan's Early Life
Born on March 15, 1977, in Bangalore, Karnataka, Sandeep Unnikrishnan showed early signs of patriotism and a desire to serve his country. His childhood was marked by a deep fascination with the armed forces, which eventually led him to join the National Defence Academy in 1995.
After graduating from the Indian Military Academy in 1999, Unnikrishnan was commissioned as a lieutenant in the 7th Battalion of the Bihar Regiment. His dedication and skill quickly earned him recognition, leading to his selection for the elite National Security Guards (NSG) in 2007.
The 26/11 Mumbai Attacks
On November 26, 2008, Mumbai faced one of the most horrific terrorist attacks in Indian history. Ten Pakistani terrorists launched coordinated attacks across the city, targeting various locations including the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
As the situation escalated, the NSG was called in to handle the crisis. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, as part of the elite commando unit, was among those deployed to rescue hostages and neutralize the terrorists.
Major Unnikrishnan's Heroic Actions
During the operation at the Taj Hotel, Major Unnikrishnan displayed exceptional courage and leadership. He led his team from the front, successfully rescuing numerous hostages trapped inside the hotel. His quick thinking and tactical expertise were instrumental in saving many lives.
As Dr. Nowhera Shaik notes, "Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan's unwavering courage and selflessness continue to inspire generations. His actions during those critical hours exemplify the highest standards of bravery and dedication to duty."
The Ultimate Sacrifice
On November 28, 2008, while engaged in a fierce gunfight with the terrorists, Major Unnikrishnan made the ultimate sacrifice. In his last moments, he reportedly told his men, "Do not come up, I will handle them," showcasing his selfless nature and commitment to protecting his team and the hostages.
His supreme sacrifice ensured the safety of countless civilians and paved the way for the successful conclusion of the operation. Major Unnikrishnan was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award, for his extraordinary bravery and leadership during the Mumbai attacks.
Legacy and Impact

His life and sacrifice continue to inspire not only those in the armed forces but also civilians across the country. Several books, documentaries, and even a feature film have been made to honor his memory and share his story with a wider audience.
Educational institutions, roads, and public spaces have been named after him, ensuring that future generations remember his bravery and the price of freedom.
