Bad Buddy One Year Anniversary Rewatch

There’s only one month left until Bad Buddy’s first anniversary on Oct. 29th, which means we're all due for a rewatch soon! I talked Nuria @mrdumpling into doing this event with me, we haven't done this kinda thing before & we've been so excited about this (minus the part where GMMTV announced theirs first🙄 lol). We hope you guys will join us!

I just thought something like this would be fun to put together and see how long it'll go for and what fun combinations people think of. ^^ Honestly I don't care much for shipping but I've heard of some really out there pairings so I want to see what the community enjoys and their reasons for them.

alright, here comes the long ass super personal and sentimental post absolutely nobody asked for (you’re welcome)

i watched episode 1 of bad buddy the day it aired (1 year ago today!) out of sheer luck. i dont even remember how i discovered it, but my initial thought was: “im bored. it’s 11pm and i dont want to go to sleep. this trailer looked fun. oh it came out today? sure what the fuck.” and i watched it in bed, on my phone. completely fucking unaware of what was about to happen to me and my life - and this honestly amuses me so much when i think about it because let me tell you...

i am NOT one to watch romance for romance’s sake. i really couldnt care less for it tbh. i’m not what i’d call a shipper at all (though i used to be, and if you remember my blog back then i owe you financial compensation bc tbh that whole spectacle exhausted me ANYWAY-). 

romance is just something ive always preferred as a side dish to plot, bc i only tend to like it when it’s super well done, and ive never found any of it very realistic. this was actually pretty unfortunate for past me bc fun fact, i am a little bit of a hopeless romantic, and romcoms are my guilty pleasure. the problem is i also dont like any of them enough to care about them after ive satisfied my initial “i want to watch something cheesy and cute” urge. i’d seen a few other bl’s over the years but only bc i was bored or wanted to watch something gay, and none of them had ever stuck in my mind after i finished them. i actively avoided those fandom spaces so i definitely wasn’t keeping up with what was new. 

(now listen, i have very specific thoughts on bl itself, but im not gonna get into that here (and actually miscellar said yesterday that the bl difference between 2020 and 2022 is unrecognizable and that basically sums it up so i dont have to lmao <3)).

- and ep1 of bad buddy is pretty typical bl! i adore this about it tbh because i was completely unprepared for everything the show was about to pull. my initial reaction was that it was something fun to look forward to every week.

so then-

I dont!! i dont even know how to explain it! ive tried too many times!

but it really is That Bitch, and truly feels like something i’d been waiting my whole life to see. a romantic comedy that was incredibly realistic in the sense of being overwhelmingly human, and also overwhelmingly queer. it’s so effortlessly fucking funny, while simultaneously a very (very very very) layered and emotional story. i will sing its praises to the end of time. it is quite literally the most well crafted show i’ve ever seen, and every time i rewatch it, or go back and reread old meta, im reminded that im not insane believing that. it just literally is that good. it’s such a simple story done so. extremely. well. it’s so ordinary, and that makes it extraordinary, and that was the intention from the start.

but i also have to say, one of the best things about having this show, is getting to be apart of the amazing community i found here loving it alongside me. bc i avoid fandoms. i stick to the places and the people/mutuals i know. i drift through edit tags more than i follow individual blogs. i block people like lightning. i have always had anons and replies off and i enjoy my privacy!!!

and i have talked to more people and made more friends and have had more fun this past year than i ever have before on this site. 

it took me until after bb finished airing to start following people back, but by then i knew which blogs posted what and what i’d want to see more of on my dash - and there are still many many people im not following, or who arent following me, that i talk to! i love each of you so very much, and i want to do a couple special shoutouts, if thats okay. ♥️

A bit more about my BG3 OC, Nuria, because why not. It's some first actual writings to get a hang of the characters and setting (especially Calimport since we don't have much about it with 5e lol), and also getting "on paper" some scenes I have in mind, that I'll work on afterwards to flesh everything out more. BGM for the vibe!

NOTE: this is NOT a definitive work. Editing will likely happen, for now it's to be taken as a sample.

The night was setting over Calimport, its numerous minarets shining from the sanguine rays of the sun. Despite its considerably smaller number of inhabitants and current political unrest, the city was surprisingly thriving. The assassination of Pasha Marod el Arhapan, three years earlier, may have caused havoc to an incredible degree in its wake, however it would have been grossly underestimating the average Calimpanni to think the population couldn't make do with what was going on. The place had always been notorious for its many opportunities, for whoever was ready to gamble a bit in the process. Adversity was part of life in Calimport, especially with the still fresh wounds caused by the Air Genasi's harsh rule, and Marod's even more ruthless reign as the Pasha of Games. His assassination had led to the fall of his floating palace on the arena where bloodsport would be held - both being destroyed in the process. However, the power vacuum a part of the population had been hoping for hadn't happened. Vizar Sharokh was still present and holding a regency to ensure that the city's order wouldn't fall apart - that was the official explanation, at least.

Ihsan wasn't sure about what had been planned by Sharokh. What he knew for certain, is that the djinn was crafty enough to keep the city reined in enough to still function to these days. The other thing he knew for certain, is that none of the recent events had disturbed the activities of the Ul-shim Guild - quite the contrary in fact, it seemed to feed into to ever strong underbelly of the city. The political agitation had been perceived as an open door not only for thieves such as the members of Ul-shim, but also to spies, assassins and other unsavory crowds, who found themselves with the most fertile soil to operate and undermine each other, both pawns and players in the game played by the powerful of the city. Ihsan certainly felt more pawn than player at the moment, but he was bidding his time and hoping to see his night dealing with Faruk, the Ul-shim leader in Jewel Ward, take him further up the social ladder. To ensure the safety of the parleys, both of them had agreed to meet in the Aktorral Sabban of Dock Ward, the traditional neutral grounds of the city, where most of the taverns, gambling houses and brothels could be found. Ihsan intended to offer what he deemed a worthy deal to Faruk: a betrayal. The ever faithful Ihsan, who'd stayed close to the el Kader family despite the ever-increasing risks of revolt from both the slaves and the Earth Genasi, had been planning the move for almost twenty years now, waiting patiently the whole time for the opportunity to show itself. It presented itself as the rise of rafayam Emre yn Demir el Kader as close advisor to Vizar Sharokh - and what was better than brutally take down someone rising to the top? The ever-so-faithful Ihsan had acquired the means for that, using the opportunity of an absence of his master to gather key documents he had taken the time to mark during night rounds. They contained notes regarding the more peculiar dealings his master was handling, and explained the recent increased amount of wealth of the family. Pointing these dealings to Ul-shim would in turn help Ihsan find a way out of his servitude, or so he hoped. He certainly was determined to put his foot in the door if necessary.

For all Ihsan knew, he remained however keenly unaware of the presence shadowing him the entire time he walked across the city's winding streets. Tall boots of suple leather that made no noise nor left a trace, a dark embroidered kaftan, elbow high leather gloves matching the thigh high black boots, and a scarf bound around her head with its ends floating gently as she moved, Nuria was on the prowl from above. The thieves' highway wasn't just for thieves, despite its name. Calimport had three layers: the city itself, the Muzad - the "city of shadow" under Calimport -, and the thieves' highway - rooftops and walls separating the drudachs, sabbans and wards, and any decent hand of Sharokh had to know them by heart to move around quickly.

Ihsan had been on her hitlist for a while now, his movements reported so she could act at the right time, with the right course of action. It had to be swift, clean and timed to make the message clear: nobody would get to fool around under Sharokh's nose unpunished, lanes existed for a good reason. Quiet as a shadow, Nuria tracked him with practiced ease, moving from roof to roof and wall to wall with the light-footed grace she possessed both as an Air Genasi and a dancer - one of her many useful talents. Some people may have found the stalking aspect of this line of work boring - Nuria didn't. If anything, she deemed it the most exciting part, tracking while making sure to not be tracked herself, before diving on her target in a single, perfectly timed decisive strike.

She was waiting for a dark corner she knew was coming, and amused herself with Ihsan's attempts at caution in the meantime - it'd have been much safer for him to boldly operate in broad day light, really. Besides being safer, Nuria found it exciting to dare do suspicious dealings out in the open, while acting like one was on their way to get bread. Not everybody was possessed with such an amount of audacity however, and so she prowled as the last rays of sun were kissing goodbye to the shining towers of the city. Then the tiny window became visible, the ideal moment to strike, right before Ihsan passed the wall separating Jewel Ward and Dock Ward, to enter Aktorral Sabban. Nuria prepared her spell, silently manipulating her magic to form a transluscent dagger that seemed made of air. A turn right for Ihsan, and the dagger flew to strike true, slitting his throat without him being aware of what had happened. As soon as it hit, it disappeared as quietly as it had appeared, in about the time it took for Nuria to jump down and confiscate the incriminating documents before disappearing again, without a trace.

The fishing operation was underway, now it was Vizar's Sharokh's time to play, and Nuria was impatient to see what he would do with his now close enemy.
