There's something there that's setting the difang gears whirring but nothing articulate is coming out

HI LILY so sorry this is late but ohhhhhh yes, Something difang has lit up in my brain. something something di feisheng sees fang duobing as someone with skill and intelligence first and a rich spoiled shaoye second, in a parallel to how fang duobing comes to know a-fei as a person before he really knows di feisheng, and so neither of them at heart view the other as filtered through the lens of jianghu reputation the way most others do. much to think about!!!

I originally had this as an addition to @nutcasewithaknife's great post about LLH holding onto DFS' famed Yingzhu armor, which is one of the few meaningful things LLH kept from his previous life as LXY. But I always sound like im shitposting and didn't match tonally so I'm posting it here in my own sandbox instead.

So yes, all of this. 100% agreed.

But also the fact the armor looks very suspiciously like underwear.

I mean. I still have deeply important questions about why a pair of sparkly underpants has become so famous and valuable -- aside from the ridiculous expense and extreme difficulty of having used like however many strands of "the strongest" silk to weave the thing. Which is ridiculous but maybe some crazy martial artist weaver did it.

Fun fact: one of the world's strongest (durability) natural fiber is spider's silk. Modern experiments with using this material to create armor for the army involves turning it into single use spray on sheaths meant to be worn directly against the skin. Also fun fact, spider's silk is some of the world's strongest material for being able to hold far beyond its weight. So using it as armor is actually really cool!

This is the type of undergarments DFS would typically be wearing.

So already, the Yinzhu armor is unusual in the form it takes because it looks like modern-day 20th century trunks/underwear. But MLC has tons of anachronisms and that can easily be explained by lack of materials and the enterprising design sense of whoever made the armor. (Or time travel!)

Here's a close up of the material. It looks like tiny metal discs held together with 'spider silk'. Which would wreak havoc to DFS' junk if he was wearing it against his skin and would probably rip all his pubes out. So I'm going to make the claim that each 'disc' is likely spun silk that's then pieced together. Very, very, very labor intensive.

But... yeah. If we're going off all the things LLH has kept from his previous life... This one item is such a wild outlier for so many reasons.

DFS doesn't seem like the type to be transgressive enough to wear this sort of thing on the outside, so I have deep suspicions that LXY got hold of it through equally petty means as his petty and passive aggressive 'revenge'. He claims DFS is so clingy, but LLH's attachment is really not that far off. And they're both just as annoying about it.

Also! This thing is named: 贏珠甲 which can be translated as Victory-Pearl/beaded-armor. Triumphant pearl armor? Beaded armor of I-prevail-against-my-opponents?

What's so triumphant? Honestly the first thing that comes to mind is some strapping young lad wearing his best undergarments on the hopes of getting lucky that evening. Except this is DFS and his version of lucky probably involves dueling LXY in some form or another.

EDit: The translation seems to differ but the ones I'm looking at says "spider silk thin as an insect's wings". While another version says "the strongest silk as thin as an insect's wings" 干翻絲 薄如翼

Writing Patterns

Thank you to @omgpurplefattie for the tag (or the equivalent thereof, lol)! I'll put the first sentences of my last ten ao3 works (in order of most recent posting to least recent) and see if I can tell any patterns. Because I want to I'll also put the last sentences because I know there are some patterns there.

01. i think want is in the shape of you (my can't have nice things fanghua post-canon piece)

He’s not supposed to be warm. 

In the dark, Li Lianhua admits to himself the words he can’t say yet: Fang Xiaobao, I want you.

02. only for you (dom4dom fanghua smut)

He curls his fingers in the hair at the back of his neck.

“Only for you,” He says as their lips meet, “Only for you, Lianhua.”

03. and they were underwater scientists (liansanjiao as underwater seahorse researchers)

Fang Duobing sighs.

“Come on, let’s go home.”

04. fool me thrice (liansanjiao modern au hilarious miscommunication on who's dating who)

Fang Duobing surfaces beside him and shakes the water out of his hair like a dog.

His love for their little life overflows, and he really couldn’t be happy without them.

05. wake (fdb starts wearing his hair like llh used to)

He starts wearing his hair like Li Lianhua’s.

“Do you see it now?” Di Feisheng whispers back, “Fang Xiaobao, you’re precious.”

06. got me riding that edge (swallow me down) (the liansanjiao fic I wrote because I learned what snowballing was)

Di Feisheng is going to be the death of him.

He gets a pillow to the face for his troubles.

07. five scenes with a cat (in which llh misses fdb and acquires a cat)

Li Lianhua is not worried.

And, because he can’t help himself, he says, teasingly, “You wouldn’t happen to know where my cat went, do you?”

08. let me too (my ultimate voyeur!llh fic)

Later he will remember how he’d bitten down into the flesh of his chest to muffle his whines.

“Okay fine, yes, you can watch again! Just stop talking about it!”

09. elegy sound (my ghost!llh fic)

When he wakes there is no sun.

“You said,” He says, smiling, “That if I could bring people back to life you’d take my family name. I think you and A-Fei should both be Li now.”

10. dress me up how you like it (fdb wears a dress and liansanjiao fuck horny about it)

By the time the package comes, three weeks and five days later, Fang Duobing has completely forgotten about the bet.

When he wakes up the next morning he has a splitting headache and no memories of the previous night, and from where he’s lying on top of Di Feisheng he can see Li Lianhua stumble through the door.

Patterns:

First sentences are usually a sensation, an action, or an emotion

Likewise they also tend to set up a central feature of the fic or at least some exposition

Last sentences usually summarise the whole of the fic neatly to tie it off

They also are either sweet or humorous

I was actually surprised that it turned out that I had written - much less posted - enough mlc fics that they'd be this entire post. I thought for sure I was going to get down to the temeraire laurence/napoleon fic that I posted *checks* September of 2022 but nope.

1. BBC Merlin I think this will surprise absolutely no one dfghkdf but I definitely can talk about BBC Merlin and why I love it and what makes the fanbase so enduring, etc etc for over an hour 2. Film/Show Adaptations of Books/Games This is really broad but I pretty much have talked about this for an hour so I know I can do it hdkfhg I love to analyse films and what makes the filmmaking effective, but I'm not always the most well-versed in the more practical aspects of filmmaking so what I generally focus on is the storytelling aspect of it. I can talk about that in general, but to be more specific I can definitely talk about what goes into adapting one medium to another, and why certain adaptations are good or bad (in my opinion, naturally!). 3. Game of Thrones When the show was airing I absolutely did spend hours talking about it and the theories related to it with my friends, and I feel like despite the shitty ending I still can talk about it for ages. There are just so many interesting characters and so many rich storylines and fascinating relationship dynamics to discuss, and so many debates to be had about it yet. 4. Relationship Anarchy I don't know if I could just straight-up monologue about it for an hour, but I definitely could talk about it for more than an hour if there's a back-and-forth going on with someone. I personally believe it's a great way of thinking about relationships and a way to make society work for everyone and their own individual needs. I feel like a lot of people aren't familiar with the concept and what it entails, and between explanations, counter points, and an exploration into the concept itself I could definitely go on about it haha 5. Asian Dramas I know this is pretty general but I've definitely seen enough of them to go on about them for over an hour. It would be fun to potentially even discuss the difference in styles between dramas from different countries

3 Ships You Like: Only 3?! Decisions decisions! Well, Feihua (and difanghua) have to be included, obviously, and I guess Wangxian should be there, too. I can’t decide who to list for the 3rd spot, so here are the main contenders: Horatio Hornblower/Archie Kennedy (and also with William Bush), Hualian, and Weilan.

First Ship Ever: I was weirdly late to shipping, or at least contemporary pop culture shipping? I was pretty invested in Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy and also Elinor Dashwood and Edward Ferrars in middle school, but it didn’t really devour my brain the way ships do now. Honestly, I think it was Horatio Hornblower and Archie Kennedy back in college, although it took some friends explaining to me why they read it as romantic (laughing and smh at past!me), and a rewatch of the entire series wearing my new shipping goggles for me to go “OH!” like they do in fic, lol. I didn’t get into fic until much later (thanks, @bifilthatonthatseson!) 

Last Song You Heard: Heather Dale’s “The Hunter” has been playing on loop in my head since I woke up this morning, but I just put on The Amazing Devil’s “Inkpot Gods,” so I guess I’ll list both. :D 

Favourite Childhood Book: I passionately loved the Ramona Quimby books when I was little, but I don’t really remember anything about them anymore, and Matilda was probably the other most important kid’s book for me growing up. (It all felt very relatable to young me, and I kept waiting for my powers to come in. Pity it doesn’t work like that!) If YA books read in adulthood count, I’d have to say the Song of the Lioness series; I read it in grad school (thanks for this, too, @bifilthatonthatseson) and it rewired my brain in INCREDIBLY important ways.

Currently Reading: I’m in between books right now, but I most recently finished Freya Marske’s A Power Unbound (volume 3 of the “Last Binding” Trilogy) and it was INCREDIBLE. Next up is Xiran Jay Zhao’s Iron Widow, which I’m very excited about. 

Currently watching: I’m in the middle of The Lost Tomb 2; I temporarily petered out because it’s been awhile since Wu Xie and Xiaoge were in the same scene and I am very much watching it for them (and Xiaohua, who also hasn’t been on screen in awhile), but I’m going to go back to it soon. Other than that, I’m rewatching “I am Nobody” with @sufficientlylargen, “The Untamed” with @sufficientlylargen, @loryer496 and another non-Tumblr friend, “Destined” with @fionatlux and a different non-Tumblr friend, and watching “Luoyang” for the first time with the latter non-Tumblr friend. :D 

Currently consuming: Nothing atm, but I’m about to make some of the lavender tea that @slangerogkatter recommended! It’s very good!

First Ship Ever: when I was a kid, I was reading my dad's classics and dreamed up a scenerio where a Chinese-British version of Sherlock Holmes + the Green Knight would escape into each others worlds, rescue each other and live together while building a cross dimensional bunker to survive against a rising evil. I was deeply obsessed with resourcing and farming in this universe. Idk. I was like 7-8 years old. Looking back with adult eyes, I think they were common-law married? They did pledge their loyalty to each other with a lovely chinese wine and and western blood-letting ceremony. It was very cross-cutural.

Favourite Childhood Book: I don't know the name of it but my library had a set of encyclopedia for rocks and minerals that were all categorized with photos. I spent the years between ages 4 - 7 obsessively going back and forth between reading that, the collected comics of the Peanuts, and The Lady of Shalott. I think that's how I learned to read... (listen i was a precocious kid. I had talent once. sniff.)

Usually respond to the first ones but fall behind. I love any and all tho!! But when I do respond to a comment that accidentally sets off my brainrot I usually rant for an unhinged amount of word count. Sorry to those commenters. I love to run my mouth, see my too long answers here

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

If I go for sad I usually intentionally go for somewhat open ended; that said Hunminjeong'eum (my fic about the butterfly effect of conversation for Nam Seon Ho) is canon compliant to my country the new age and thus has an implied angsty ending. There's also the pending sad ending for my MLC series

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Definitely my Mr. Queen fix it series. My favorite of the bunch is all my life i’ve been waiting for a good time (let's ride) which is the least popular one of course. But I think that Soyong deserved her own proper happy ending away from the husband who despised her, so that's the happiest one to me.

Do you get hate on fics?

One person insisted I tag OOC which honestly cut deeper than it should have

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I wrote one pretty graphic smut piece, it is my second most popular work, and I think it is deeply unhot. Go figure

Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

My only crossover is my My Country the New Age and The King: Eternal Monarch reincarnation fic from the perspective of a side character squared remembering their past life amongst political intrigue aka lately I'm a nervous wreck (i only have two real friends) (24,023 words). As I wouldn't wish The King: Eternal Monarch on my worst enemy, it's unfortunately incomprehensible to many people of taste.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I'd be flattered if it happened honestly

Have you ever had a fic translated?

No I am far too unpopular for that

What's your all-time favorite ship?

Li Shiqing and Xiao Heyun from Reset! I love that they're couple that works better together than apart and that they're both mostly practical, very ordinary, and matter-of-factly devoted to each other by the end.

What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I have a Reset 2022 fic I need to finish, but I don't think it would have any readers and it's not on the brain so who knows if I'll find the time

What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm good at a funny, modern sort of voice with quirky character details. It's one of the many reasons I love my silly crossover fic- I think it's funny.

What are your writing weaknesses?

PACING AND PLOT. my white whale is that awful CQL fic that's by far the most popular thing I've written. Also probably culture I'm in a lot of fandoms where the culture is not my own and I'm sure I bungle it

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I do include non-English words sometimes, usually following the format of the subtitles I watched since that's how I experienced the work. In terms of full sentences, probably not.

Favorite fic you've written?

lately I'm a nervous wreck (i only have two real friends) by a wide margin. It's my second least popular work. It's my favorite thing I've every written writ large: I was working through some big feelings and philosophies when writing it that helped make me a better person. It's funny (to me). It's sort of dark. It has a cheesy Olivia Rodrigo lyric for the title. It centers a platonic relationship and has a bunch of carefully transcribed details from MCTNA, a show I love. I'm pretty sure literally no one else read the last chapter since I posted it a year after the others. I reread it regularly. I still find typos.

Last movie: TMNT: Mutant Mayhem! It was super cute. Gorgeous animation style.

Currently watching: Lord help me, but I am about to finally start Supernatural (good work, peer pressure!!). I'm also watching the dongua Link Click -- dumb name (or bad translation), incredible show. This is the post that instantly convinced me to watch it, and I honestly couldn't pitch it any better myself.

Also just biding my time until TGCF season 2!! ^_^

Currently reading: Just because the person before me mentioned this -- I also have @shamera's fic open to read! I love it so far. I'm also reading Yuwu (Remnants of Filth) by Meatbun, and The Swimming Pool Library. (The two genders! Both gay tho <3333)

Currently working on: Trying to disentangle all of my thoughts and ~feelings regarding Mysterious Lotus Casebook!!! I do want to write something about the series, because it has totally enthralled me in a really special way. And jumping off of that, I'm also thinking of putting together a post on my sudden hard-and-fast fall for c-dramas overall, because I think there's something interesting there psychologically that others might relate to as well.

Currently obsession: Uhhh, yeah, Mysterious Lotus Casebook. I have never come so close to attempting to learn how to gif, LOL. (Luckily, everyone else seems to have this covered. ;)) Also, Link Click! WATCH IT!!
