Nutrition Advice
Today we have a guest blog post for you from our studio nutritionist Barbara Birke. Barbara will be leading a 21-Day “Spring into Summer” nutritional reset out of Lili Viola Pilates, and will be available for one on one nutritional coaching starting at the end of the program. The info session for the Spring into Summer reset is Thursday June 7th, so come in if you are thinking of joining the program! Read on for a taste of Barbara’s nutrition advice on one the best things to get rid of or reduce in your diet.
What are the best things to get rid of nutritionally? One of the bigger pieces won’t come as a surprise to anyone: SUGAR.
Many of us have a love-hate relationship with sugar for good reasons. It is so yummy, but can also be quite addictive and is connected to all kinds of health issues. It is also hidden EVERYWHERE, and it goes by all sorts of names. Some disguises that sugar uses on ingredient lists are cane juice and cane syrup, corn sweeteners and high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate and nectars, as well as many more.
All sugar, whether natural or processed, is a type of simple carbohydrate that your body uses for energy. Fruits, vegetables and dairy foods naturally contain sugar. “Added sugars” are the sugars and syrups added to foods during processing. Desserts, sodas, and energy and sports drinks (yes – sports drinks are mostly crap!) are the top sources of added sugars.
Tumblr media
Why is added sugar a problem?
Eating too many foods with added sugars sets the stage for potential health problems. Below is a list of some of the problems:
- Poor nutrition. If you fill up on sugar-laden foods, you may skimp on nutritious foods and miss out on important nutrients, vitamins and minerals.
 - Weight gain. There’s usually no single cause for being overweight or obese, however, added sugar might contribute to the problem. Adding sugar to foods and beverages makes them more calorie dense. It’s easy to consume extra calories when eating foods that are sugar sweetened.
 - Increased triglycerides. Triglycerides are a type of fat in the bloodstream and fat tissue. Eating too much added sugar can increase triglyceride levels, which may increase your risk of heart disease.
 - Inflammation. Sugar fuels chronic inflammation, which contributes to degenerative disease and all kinds of issues. Anti-inflammatory nutrition is really what we should practice for long term health - and feeling our best!
By limiting the amount of added sugars in your diet, you can cut calories without compromising nutrition. In fact, cutting back on foods with added sugars makes it easier to get in the nutrients you need! There are plenty of additional benefits from lowering your sugar intake such as reduced inflammation, improved overall health, and better overall nutrition.
Take this easy first step: Next time you’re tempted to reach for a soda or other sugary drink, grab a glass of ice-cold water instead.
For advanced sugar avoiders: when you start craving sweet, drink some water, eat a snack rich in protein – and wait a bit. Better?

If you want to take it all the way - sign up for the info session this Thursday and join my SPRING INTO SUMMER PROGRAM. Questions? Email me at [email protected]. I am looking forward to supporting you!
Be well,
Barbara

Breakfast is for Champions! Start Your Day off Right!
Tumblr media
When people say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” they’re not kidding! Starting your morning with a good breakfast will give you the fuel you need to stay energized and focused throughout the day. It will also help your body use food calories more efficiently.
If you skip breakfast, you’re more likely to eat too much at the end of the day, because your body is still looking for the calories you missed at breakfast. This promotes fat storage, because while you sleep, your body absorbs the calories you consume right before bed as fat. If you eat a good breakfast, your body will be able to burn more calories throughout the day, and you’ll have more energy for your workouts!
It’s not always easy to eat breakfast as you're rushing to work and your kids are rushing to school. Fortunately, breakfast doesn't have to be a big production – it can be quick, simple, and portable. Here are a few simple ways you can set yourself up for a successful day.
Make breakfast the night before: If your mornings are usually a blur, prepare your meal before you go to bed, and then grab it and go when you wake up! For instance, an egg white omelet with potatoes is an easy meal that can be made in advance and reheated in the morning.
Keep the basics on hand: The less you have to think about breakfast, the easier it will be! You can even eat these things while you’re getting ready in the morning, or as you’re dashing out the door.
Here are a few examples of simple, versatile breakfast ideas:  3 hard boiled eggs (only one yolk), with piece of fruit and toast.  A piece of whole-grain toast with one tablespoon of peanut or almond butter, slices of banana, and a glass of milk or hard boiled egg  A bowl of oatmeal with ½ cup berries  A bowl of Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with ½ c fruit
Breakfast can be a breeze if you improvise and eat whatever is quick, handy, and healthy.
Try non-traditional breakfast foods: You don’t have to have cereal or Greek yogurt for breakfast  - try whatever works for you! You could even eat leftovers from the night before. Any breakfast is better than no breakfast.
Drink your breakfast: If you need an even simpler and more portable breakfast option, make a smoothie or a green protein drink! You can make a basic smoothie with Greek yogurt and fruit (fresh or frozen), or, try one with milk, a tablespoon of peanut butter, and a half a cup of oatmeal. Make a green protein shake with one scoop of your favorite protein powder, ice, water, and whatever vegetables you have handy. Try whatever sounds good to you – the possibilities are endless!
Pack your gym bag for pre-workout mornings: Grab a piece of fruit or put dry cereal in a reusable Tupperware container, and stash them in your bag to take with you and eat 20 minutes before a morning workout. Plus, make sure to always keep your bag stocked with energy bars for when you need to eat breakfast on the run – or to refuel after a workout!
It’s important to realize that everyone should be eating breakfast! It’s easy for moms to forget about breakfast because they’re so busy making sure everyone else has eaten. Taking care of yourself is just as important of taking care of your family, so make sure to fuel your body every morning. Of course, your kids should be eating breakfast, too – eating a balanced meal in the morning has been shown to prevent childhood obesity. Get children involved in planning and cooking their breakfast so that they’ll be more excited about eating it!
Skipping breakfast can cause a lot more trouble than just getting the mid-morning munchies. A recent study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that men who regularly skipped breakfast had a 27% higher risk of having heart attack or dying from heart disease than those who regularly ate breakfast! Not eating breakfast can lead to obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes – and all of these things can lead to a heart attack over time. Harvard is doing another study to test the results on women, but they’re predicting that they will come up with similar results.
Eating breakfast will wake up your mind and body, and it will kick start your metabolism to improve your health and your capacity for learning. With all those benefits from one simple meal, make sure not to miss out!
