Forest Scenery To Add Tension

A wilderness can be more than just scenery, it can also be an obsacle for a character to overcome. These examples will not be about animals, but instead just terrain.

Cave.

Caves are often used in fantasy, but most of the time they are tunnels that are conveniently high and wide enough for the group to walk through. Sure this might be easier, but it does not add to the mood. Here are some ideas to make things harder for your characters:

Lost. They could be lost in a network of caves (look up a map of the Mammoth Cave to see a real-world example)

Tight spaces. Your character could be trying to squeeze through a tight area and get stuck. (People have died this way, and very recently)

Oxygen can be depleted in caves. Not only would your character be struggling to breath, but there is a high chance that their flame/torch/candle/lantern would struggle too, and maybe go out. They would be in pitch black, having to feel their way forward.

Underground rivers or lakes. Sometimes stories have them as the only way out, but in real life they often just lead to a network of underground streams with no oxygen(Example: Cenote Esqueleto, Mexico). Lakes are sometimes toxic or even acidic.

Slime. Some caves get slick from water, or even animal droppings (like bats) this can make for slippery footing

Uneven turrain. Caves are often not just a straightforward tunnel. Your character may be faced with a steep climb up or down a dangerous cliffface. (look up Hang Sơn Đoòng for one example)

Ice. There are some caves here that keep ice long after it has melted outside. (for a pretty example, look up Eisriesenwelt Cave)

Forest

Tree Graveyards. Where a previous wildfire turned trees into standing corpses. This could make hiding/escaping harder

Thick brush. Sometimes, the trees and brush get so thick that they become like a maze. Not only can that make getting lost easily, but it is tiring to weave through the knotwork of branches and trunks while also having branches cut into skin and pull hair.

Poisonous Plantlife. Imagine a forest where near every tree around is covered in poison ivy and your character has to climb one of them. There are also far more dangerous plants.

Bog/Swamp.

Mud that sticks you in place. At worse, you might get so stuck that you can’t move. If that doesnt happen, the suction will likely steal your shoes/boots.

Tiredness. Nevermind the bugs attacking, anyone who has walked through marshy turrain can tell you how tiring it can be.

Soggy feet. Walking along the base of plants can help from sinking a bit(or constructing snowshoe-like contraptions), but more than likely, the feet of your character will be

Not always easy to spot. Some bogs are so still and green with folliage, that they comoflauge into their surroundings.

Deadly depth. They may be deeper than you expect, too(some cultures even used them to burry dead).

Rock

Brittle. Shale is a brittle rock that can easily crumble underfoot. It can also be razor sharp like a knife.

Rock Falls. Rock falls are common, and sometimes animals cause it to happen on purpose. This is the reason many climbers, scramblers, and hikers wear helmets.

Slippery. Rocks can be very slippery, especially next to a river or waterfal. Not only has the rock been worn smooth, but it can be covered in slippery slime.

Pebbled. Trying to climb up the mass ammount of pebbles (such as by a rock slide) can be incredibly dificult as rocks give way and slide back with each step.

False Ledges. I have seen many new hikers walk to a ledge, not realizing they are just on a slate of rock hanging over a deadly fall. Those rocks can break under weight.

River

Undercurrants. In movies, they often make crossing a river look like a simple task. In real life, you have to worry about something called “undercurrants” where the the water under the surface moves at a different direction. This can mean drowning. Nearby where I live, there is a popular cliff-jumping spot that claims the life of someone every so often when they jump into the wrong spot.

Speed. In a violent river, just being in up to your knees can sometimes be enough to pull you off your feet.

Rocks. If your character is swept away in a river, there is likely going to be random large rocks your character may smash into.

Sharp. While swiming in a river, I once cut my foot open on something, perhaps a freshwater clam, that was so deep, my parents had to glue it closed (too far from the hospital). It could have also been a sharp rock, garbage, and more. Have I learned my lesson? No, not really.

Strange Features:

Crater of fire. Imagine a crator that never stops burning. Well, there is one in real life that has been burning for over 50 years. Look up Darvaza.

Poisonious lakes. Yup, these are real, too. Some lakes are so dangerous, that breathing near them is dangerous(Lake Nyos, Cameroon).

Hot Springs. Not all hotsprings are relaxing; some are hot enough to burn.

Sounds like a really favorable outsome! It might not come as quickly as you hope. Some waiting, patience, and even a few bumps in the road maybe be ahead. But if you wait it out and look at the situation postitively: like obsacles to overcome and pass over you like a storm, things will come together in the end.

Why are there so many stories that depict people overcoming the differences that were obsacles to their romantic relationship and so few stories about the times when two people have to realize that their differences must overcome their love. The latter story need not be entirely bleak: it could show two people separating so that they can find something better somewhere else. But instead, I have been given what I think is an unrealistic desire to have love overcome difference.

The Bellarke romance in this season is so obvious, I can’t understand how someone doesn’t see that. But what about Echo? I know you’re all saying that Echo isn’t such a big problem (I agree), but it still is a small problem, Bellamy has spent more time with Echo than he did with Clarke. He can’t just leave her (break up) like that. “We are family now” And btw, I am so curious about the scene where Clarke gets that B and E are together, wbu?

I’m not saying she isn’t a big problem. I’m saying she is a GOOD problem. A problem used to heighten the romantic plotline and draw it into the open.

I don’t know how they’re going to solve the problem, and maybe I am minimizing it since I’m certain it will be solved (so how they do it doesn’t matter as much to me.)

We don’t know the specifics on B/E yet. Just that he hated her for 3 years. Everything else is still not clear. For all we know, B/E was together as long as Bellarke was on earth, as partners. That does sound like something the writers would do… making a conflicting connection “equal” with the numbers.

But yeah, B/E is a family. Family is an issue this season. Spacekru, Clarke and Madi. Clarke and Abby. The Blake siblings. Eligius. Delinquents. Wonkru.

Also.

Loyalty is an issue. And as people shift in their identification with families and personal identity, there will be betrayals. We’ve ALREADY seen them. Kane and Abby betrayed Wonkru. Octavia betrayed Kane. Indra betrayed Octavia. Shaw betrayed Diyoza (if he locked the missiles, which,probably.) We haven’t seen it with spacekru or Bellarke yet, but I figure it’s coming.

Who Am I? is a big question. Part of that is going to be about families and belonging and identity and reconciliation of past selves with present selves.

Echo will be dealing with ALL these issues. So will Clarke and Bellamy and everyone else.  Bellarke is going to end up together because that’s the story, but they’re all going to be facing these issues, and how the romances shake out will be connected to them. because THOSE are the issues of the season.

So, i’m gonna take the opportunity and talk a bit about LGBT rep in cartoons. I think especially to VLD and also Steven Universe (THIS LAST EPISODE OMG I WAS SPOILED I’M ONLY IN S1 THANK YOU INTERNET FOR THE SPOIL BUT I MUST ADMIT IT WAS WAYYYY TO CUTE <33333)

In Voltron Legendary Defender, we know for sure there will be LGBT rep (thanks, Joaquim It’s-a-natural-progression Dos Santos, Lauren You-can’t-trust-me and Jeremy Don’t-worry-you’ll-be-happy Shada <3 )

(well to be honnest I think there’s more chance this will be a LGB couple, not a T representation but maybe they will also show trans person ? I don’t know)

So I have my own idea on which characters are concerned… well, a LGBT couple… not even talking about the interviews or anything out of the show, just when you watch the show, who are the two main characters with a huuuuuuuuuuuuge romantic slowburnt build-up ? Yeah, know what I mean guys, heck yeah you know ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )

At least, it’s a quite huge evidence to me and to a lot of people, but when you’re a little 7yo kiddo (or just a random cis straight person who doesn’t look for rep) you don’t necessarly understand everything in foreshadowing in the first time (even if… some kids actually do :D ), so that’s why LGBT explicit rep are so important

Okay, so : there is no chance JDS and LM can read this but I still want to tell them something (them and everyone who creates a PG show, or book, or anything with the intention to show LGBT rep), please, SHOW.

Don’t settle for an ambiguous ending scene between two characters like « yeaaaaaaaah we don’t really know, there’s a chance they are together but we can’t really know, interpretation, ya know… it can be, but there’s a doubt... »

Don’t settle for ending the story with them like « yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah, they are just getting together then the end ! we’re letting you imagine what they become after that ! »

Instead, make them evolve. Show them telling each other they love him, show them together, show them arguing, then reconciling, show them worrying for each other at the middle of a battle, something like that… show them evolving as a couple.  

Because this is what they are.  

Because it’s what you would do for a straight couple without any questions.  

Because, telling out of the show that this character is LGBT without showing it, it doesn’t make any sense. This is not representation.  

Because, showing quickly LGBT characters without developping this aspect of them, continuing to hide their queerness, it’s sending the message that it’s okay to be queer only if we don’t show it.  

So please, Joaquim and Lauren, and all the others, when you’ll include LGBT rep, do it with 100 % of implication. Especially when it adresses to children.  

If you face obsacles (and sadly I’m almost sure you will), like people who are shocked you can show this to children, or the homophobic and transphobic laws of your broadcasting plateform (which can become censorship), please, fight.  

Fight against people who think that LGBT rep is something toxic or NSFW.  

Fight for your queer audience, and especially for queer kids who have no marks in a straight normative society. You know we’re there.  

Please, don’t let us be censored and show the world we’re there…  

Well I’m very optimistic about LGBT rep in cartoons. Steven Universe did it, Adventure Time did it, other cartoons did it and I’m 100 % sure Voltron Legendary Defender is about to do it.

Joaquim and Lauren, you made a so huge build up with these two Keith and Lance and I’m 100 % convinced they are meant to be together since the very first episode. So, please, don’t make like you did in Legend of Korra. I know, it was another time, another plateform with more restrictions and as far as I understood you had to rush the end of the show. (and I know there’s the comic which continue LOK and talk about LGBT people in Korra’s universe but still)

But now you have VLD, you have Keith and Lance, and you have plenty of time to make them evolve together in an explicit way. I put a lot of hope in you because I know you’re not queerbaiters and you have all my trust for s7 and more :3

the first lecture during the WIP conference was a past NUA graduate Dan Kelby who went on to do freelancing character designs on procreate and photoshop working with companies such Disney , cartoon network and passion. in his talk, he discusses the obsacles and tips to get your work out there and get notice by clients this including social media page and manging finances in freelancing. 

he was working on the series called apple and onion on cartoon network creating the multiple characters and props in the show on character sheets , which Im very aiming to looking into for my career path to push my character ideas further into the second year.

Dirk Nowitzki Had Doubts About Breaking Wilt Chamberlain's Scoring Record

As the 2018-19 NBA season tipped off, Dirk Nowitzki sat just 232 points shy of passing Wilt Chamberlain’s all-time scoring mark of 31,419 points. In past years, reaching that number would have been easy for the Dallas Mavericks’ legend, who averages 20.8 points for his career. This season is different, however. The 40-year-old Nowitzki didn’t start off the way he hoped. Because of that, there were times when he doubted whether he would reach Chamberlain’s milestone or even pass it, for that matter. He finally got there Monday night, with only 12 games to spare in the regular season.

"It’s been a long time coming this season, knowing before the year it was only 200-something points," Nowitzki said. "And then there were times that I thought, 'I’m not going to make it,' the way the season went with the injury and coming off the injury was super slow."

In April, Nowitzki chose to undergo surgical debridement on his left ankle, which had bothered him for several months. He expected to have a full recovery with better mobility and return ready for training camp. It wasn't to be as Nowitzki tweaked the same ankle while scrimmaging, inflaming his tendon. The injury kept him out all of training camp and preseason. His drawn out recovery also caused him to miss the first 26 games of the season before he eventually returned to action in mid-December.

Even after returning, it was clear that Nowitzki still wasn’t right. He struggled mightily in games, plodding up and down the court, missing shot after shot. Before February, he was averaging just 4.4 points. His new role coming off the bench—the first time since his rookie season—certainly factored into his labored game. There were even times when Nowitzki looked defeated, as if someone sucked the joy for the game out of him.

"There were obviously times in December and January where I couldn’t really move and it wasn’t fun," Nowitzki said. "It wasn’t fun to compete. I couldn’t help the guys. I had to put in a lot of work—a lot of work on off days. Whether it’s conditioning, lifting—just to somehow get back to where I can enjoy the game a little bit."

Through it all, Nowitzki kept his spirits up and continued working to give himself a chance to compete each night. In the past several seasons, he has put in extended time in the gym and has undergone extensive treatment just to keep his body from breaking down. Without it, he almost certainty would not be able to cope with the physicality of game and the rigors of the NBA schedule.

"If you see the things that they are sticking in his body, from needles to everything else—all over it—just to be able to get out there and play then you’d be absolutely amazed," Mavericks Head Coach Rick Carlisle said. "Part of me is just, really more than ever, in awe of his will to compete."

Nowitzki displayed that same drive and determination as he crept closer to Chamberlain’s scoring record. He scored 14 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 16, coming within four points of breaking the record, before his shot left him in the fourth quarter. The following game, against the New Orleans Pelicans, Nowitzki came out focused and went to work early.

In front of a sellout crowd that was on its feet, he scored his first bucket with an assist from rookie Jalen Brunson with 9:51 remaining in the first quarter. Just over a minute later, he passed Chamberlain after Luka Doncic found him at the top of the key. Nowitzki turned and rose over Kenrich Williams with a signature fadeaway jumper and splashed it home.

After all the work that he’s put in to keep playing, Nowitzki says he is finally feeling better and it shows on the court. Since moving into predominantly a starting role in late February, his scoring average ticked up to 9.3 points per game. While this will likely go down as his lowest scoring season since his rookie year, Nowitzki can at least cherish overcoming a slew of obsacles to become the NBA’s sixth all-time scorer, again (LeBron James passed him earlier this season), and have his name alongside the game’s great players.

"Anytime you beat some of those legends up there, it’s incredible," Nowitzki said. "It’s surreal at times to be up there with some of these names. I’m going to really let that all soak in once my career is over and show my kids."

They don't seem to want us to be rooting for B/E at all. If they wanted us to root for B/E they would have left those scenes in. Also the fact that we aren't going to be having flashbacks of their development shows me that they're not that important. If they were really a important ship they would have shown us some build up as an attempt to get us to root for B/E.
