gnawing on cardboard because I've been seeing so many posts lately about how a character putting on healthy weight can be used narratively to show their healing journey and them finally feeling safe after struggling either physically or emotionally, and. God it's beautiful.

Zelestia just happened to be the example bc I fell for her EXTREMELY quickly during her Forging Bonds, but. Let it be known! Moe is really not good with women. 🧍 Respectful on the outside, having a moral meltdown over it on the inside (Mani isn't a physical being here ofc, isn't meant to be visible either -- imagine it all floaty as a little angel on Moe's shoulder. An incredibly high-strung and aggressive angel who gives bad advice only.)

ONCE AGAIN I DO NOT GIVE MYSELF ENOUGH ROOM. BUT. When Mani says "As though you are Absolved and Exempt?" I think it elaborates extensively, evil villain monologue style. Something like, "[cont] by the Nature of Your Birth? As though you cannot perpetuate the Very Same behaviors and attitudes You were once Subjected To?" AND. IT CAN JUST KEEP GOING. "To Believe that You are Outside of What Was Done Unto You simply based on such is to Disavow What You Are. Mind Yourself, Know Your Place." <- it isn't saying this as an insult, but as an acknowledgement of how Moe has a masculine identity now. The social dynamics are different. So WATCH OUT‼️‼️‼️

And another little doodle. This line from the FB MADE ME WANT HER TO HAVE CURLY HAIR. SO BAD. And immediately makes me think she straightens it, worried it's coming undone. Also just more of Moe being polite, stilted style. Guy who's so paranoid about harassment it's not even gonna give any more of a compliment than that.

And that really is the thing. Moe is just paranoid. Mani is the embodiment of that paranoia, much of the time.

Making Some Book VIII New Heroes Predictions

Now that we've gotten the trailer for the final New Heroes banner of Book VII, it's time to look ahead to what the next year may bring in terms of new characters to be added to FEH. Two years back I made an entire video out of this topic on my channel...but that's a lot of work and I'm about to dive into the Super Mario RPG remake over there, so I'm doing this the easy way this time.

*When I refer to "premium" units in this post, I'm talking about ascended, rearmed, or attuned heroes. Also legendaries and mythics, if it's outside the context of New Heroes banners.

Guaranteed banners

Engage

Definitely one, possibly two again this year. IS is breaking up the cast by country, so an Elusian banner with the royal sisters, Goldmary, and whichever of the guys polls highest is an easy prediction. I'd say Solm as well, but it's already such a natural fit for the January special banner theme that we may have to wait for then to see those characters all together. 2024 is doubtful there for that, considering we just got a special Timerra. It's possible we may see a DLC-focused banner, like what happened with the Wolves - and IS will absolutely push Zelestia as a new character even though Zephia's already in the game.

Everyone's also predicting that Engage will sweep the next CYL with at least three of the four slots, so that in combination with a standard array of seasonals, a likely appearance on the fallen banner, and the odd legendary or mythic (legendary m!Alear at some point is all but assured) will lead to complaints of Engage fatigue.

Thracia

Unless you count ascended Ced or Sara backpacking for desert Linde (I don't), we haven't had a new FE5 unit in Heroes since March of 2022. The poor game is long overdue, especially because aside from Engage it's the title with the most potential new units to add. Granted that those characters aren't exactly popular, but with a whopping nine women still missing from its roster FE5 can lock down the key headlining waifu demographic in a way that almost every other game would struggle to at this point. There's a plot-relevant magical waif (Linoan), a loli (Tina), a dancer (Lara), a wyvern rider (Eda), or a pegasus knight to follow up on 2022's Karin (Misha). Again, none of them are especially popular, but Thracia could make up a viable banner easily even without help from Heroes fanservice. I'd expect one sometime between January and April, when the New Heroes events lack OCs.

Path of Radiance

The Tellius games alternate books, likely because of the significant roster overlap. Book VII got a Radiant Dawn banner, so here we are. Since FE10 poached Lucia though, FE9's only got Calill for a new female addition. Prediction for the banner would be Calill, a premium female character (one of Mia, Ilyana, or Nephenee, maybe Mist?), a Heroes OC, and some male unit. Largo would be logical, but I could see a more random pick like Zihark or Tauroneo.

Three Houses

A surprising number of Fódlan characters are still stuck in alt hell despite the years of fatigue. There's enough of them in fact for two or possibly three more New Heroes banners without significant help from OC padding. We've already seen multiple examples of IS using characters' Hopes designs for lazy premium alts, so I'd also expect more of that.

2023's banner was all Lions (and Rhea), so next year's will focus on a different house. If it's the Deer, I'd guess Lorenz, Leonie, premium Lysithea or Marianne, and either a Heroes OC or whichever of Raphael or Ignatz polls better. If it's the Eagles, Dorothea and Caspar are locks as well as premium Bernadetta most likely, along with Heroes fanservice or possibly regular Manuela. After those two ideas have been used up, the few remaining members of the roster are very likely doomed to something like the recent Echoes banner where they've got to split it with multiple OCs. The handful of male non-student characters who got dropped from the Hopes roster (and also Rodrigue from Hopes itself) are probably out of luck entirely bar the odd GHB like Cyril got a few months ago.

Oh, and fallen m!Shez possessed by Arval is pretty much a lock next year too. Fódlan is amazing for those wanky fallen banners.

(New) Mystery of the Emblem

Archanea closed out Book VI a year ago and hasn't been seen since, so a comeback in 2024 is reasonable. Complicating matters is that despite the abundance of missing units, most of them are 1) male and/or 2) utterly forgettable. The waifu picks are Midia, Cecil, Marisha, and Yuliya...not exactly inspiring options. As 2022's banner was ostensibly taken from FE1/11 owing to pre-corruption Hardin and as FE3/12 have more options for new units, that would be the more likely play. Will we finally see a banner that forces IS to turn an earlygame cleric into a headliner? Historically those characters have fared poorly in Heroes (we're still missing all of Edain, Lana, Safy, Elen, and Laura), but half of the options for new women are just that.

Fates

Last we saw FE14 New Heroes they were opening this book, so it's a reasonable expectation later on in Book VIII. Even though Fates still holds the largest percentage of Heroes's total roster, it surprisingly has a handful of characters it can still offer. That's especially true for the second generation, although because that was the focus of the last banner IS may be alternating them. The waifu options in Gen 1 - Mozu, Scarlet, and technically Fates Anna - aren't inspiring, but it's not like Sophie and Mitama left over in Gen 2 are much better. Throw in a premium royal or two and/or a Heroes OC and call it a banner.

Assuming two Engage banners, that's seven of the ten New Heroes slots. Those below are ones I'm less certain of - but something's got to fill out the holes in the schedule.

Wild Cards

Genealogy and Binding Blade

Both reasonable options although they're kind of running low at this point. FE4's banners alternate, so the next one should be Gen 1...which has only Edain and an assortment of men that even fans of the game are hard-pressed to care about. FE6 has, uh...Elen? I did say IS hates earlygame clerics.

The one thing that would certainly bolster the prospects of either of these games would be a remake announcement, which would offer tons of options for premium alts and potentially drum up interest in missing early picks like both games' Christmas knights and such. It would be odd if we didn't get any kind of development announcement for FE in 2024, and a remake would be perfect filler while IS works on whatever the next big release is planned to be.

Sacred Stones

Seems to be a favorite among the FEH staff considering how often it shows up on summer banners despite its age and low level of waifu bait potential, and the last time it got a New Heroes banner was near the start of this year. Too bad it's down to Ismaire as far as new female characters go.

Blazing Blade

Unlikely as it's just now getting a new banner, and it too is running out of viable options. With Isadora getting added, Vaida's the only female character from the game left.

Awakening

Technically overdue since it last showed up in October of 2022, but it's been running on fumes for years. We're talking just Vaike and Laurent here. Even Kellam got a seasonal! I expect that FE13 will be the next victim of a double OC banner. Speaking of which...

Echoes

...Not happening. We all saw that travesty last month. Jesse and/or Nomah might be added sometime in 2025, if IS even bothers.

Thoughts on Fire Emblem Engage

(Spoiler Warning for story events)

I’m not gonna lie, even after having beat Fire Emblem Engage, it still feels unreal that a new Fire Emblem just came out. I remember the drought of Fire Emblem news really getting to me last year, three whole years since Three Houses. Obviously this was due to the pandemic slowing everything down. Hell, it’s incredibly obvious Engage was meant to be a thirtieth anniversary game.

As for the game itself, I’m a little mixed. The gameplay side of things was fantastic, feeling like a more polished version of Conquest, without some of the more gimmicky maps. I’m not the first to notice just how player phase focused this game is, and how much it rewards constant aggression and advancement. This is further complemented by the break mechanic allowing the player a bit more safety in being aggressive, along with incentivizing a diverse army roster. Likewise, game elements like chain attacks and breaking really punish the player for overextending and trying to juggernaut. Even with the time wheel mechanic, I constantly found myself in tense moments where the only way out was to play smart. From a gameplay perspective, this might be the best Fire Emblem they’ve ever made. My only real gripes were that I found some late game reinforcements a little excessive at times (especially in chapter 21), and fog of war maps have the audacity to still be an annoying thing in the series. I’ll even go so far as to say fog of war does not compliment the aggressive nature of Engage at all.

On the other hand, I found the story pretty weak. It’s not bad, just pretty bland. Mostly, it’s just a pastiche of Fire Emblem tropes and cliches, perfectly fitting for an anniversary game. Though a fair number of characters have their inner depth, they don’t quite have as much impact as members of past entries. That’s not to say they aren’t a fun cast, I just don’t think they’ll ever reach the popularity of the casts we’ve seen in the past decade. As a whole, though, they’re very… let's say quirky nature makes them all come across as the most cracked out Fire Emblem cast to date. In a way, it makes Alear shine all the more, because despite their deviantart oc ass design, they are the sane one of the group. The only thing I actually disliked was that for a story supposedly about dragons, there is almost no dragon shifting. Alear never turns into a dragon. Veyle never turns into a dragon. Zephia never turns into a dragon. Lumera turns into a dragon only in two cutscenes, and not even when you fight her corrupted form. I have been cheated out of a proper manakete protagonist yet again, and I shall not stand for it!

Of course, there are some strong moments. The Brodian and Elsuian royals boss convo’s with their corrupted parents were really good. Each country has a really strong aesthetic. A lot of the royals like Alfred and Fogado have some surprising inner depth. I was also a big fan of crazy corrupted Lumerra. Finally, chapters 10 and 11 were a tense and exciting point narrative wise.

All in all, it’s a really fun game, and if you’re actually into the strategy rpg part of Fire Emblem, you’ll have a blast. If you were a fan of Awakening and Fates’s cast, you’ll probably also enjoy this one quite a bit too. If you got into this series thanks to Three Houses and are primarily interested in the story aspect of this franchise… I’d recommend waiting for the Genealogy of the Holy War remake.

I love the way red Alear is talking. Idk how exactly to describe it, but you can tell they’re traumatized from what happened to their siblings and trying to prove themselves to Sombron and that they’re trying to hide their emotions.

Oh Ivy no shot my scrunkly cringefail loserwife. She’s so endearing and her I personally just love the sound of voice, and her va does a great job!! Her design looks exactly like an oc id have made freshman year of highschool so she gets points for that!! And she’s been through so much and stayed strong and cares about her people and helping elusia thrive!! Also cool big sister :)

12. Who is your favorite retainer?

Pandreo no competition he’s just so fun and endearing and he makes you think he’s just some what if a priest partied? joke at first but he cares so much about making a church that not only helps people but they genuinely enjoy going to. He’s been through a lot and it’s so interesting to see how that affected his relationship with his faith. Plus he goes big brother mode whenever possible haha he’s very sweet as well & I adore his relationship with Panette they both deserve the best AROOOOOOOO

17. Who is your least favorite enemy unit?

Well I haven’t finished the game so might change but like,,, mauvier? he was just kinda annoying to fight bc i don’t really keep beastslayers in the party & Alcryst could oneshot Zephias Health bars, Pandreo could do Marnis and kagestu just, destroyed Griss lol

But character wise? Idk lol uhhh hyacinth? Sombrons’s at least kinda inch resting but despite getting a special cutscene & big part of Ivy & Hortensias lives he just feels kinda there for me

I've been playing dragon age for like 4 months straight and I'm having a great time but for some reason my mind decided to just wrench the fucking steering wheel and now I've got brainrot for my bg3 OCs again

ok writing ocs garbage here because im too lazy to get up and write it down in my sketchbook

today during a long car ride i realized i basically made demons as resentful/vengeful souls but i’ve never really tried the whole soul thing into any of my existing characters

so that got me thinking about the past lives of some of my villains, particularly Zephia, Pandora, and Blitz. idk ow much of this will actually turn out canon but it was a fun start

so for Z, i wanted her to be sort of a 20s gangster girl, very Bonnie, meaning she also had a Clyde partner type of guy. i can see the two being super close and stuff, but during all the blacklists stuff, things got rather dicey and her Clyde sold her out. im thinking he set a trap for her in a museum where the cops showed up to ask her some questions, leaving her partner to escape scott free. Z doesn’t go without a fight and a gunfight breaks out in the museum. a nothosaurus skeleton falls on top of her, killing her instantly, but her soul possesses the skeleton for her to take revenge on her betrayer 

for Pandora, I’m imagining her as a little girl living in the 80s. her dad recently remarried, not sure yet if after a divorce or the death of his wife, and her new stepmother didn’t care much for Pan. all she cared about was her father and his money (too Cinderella? ah well its still a wip). one night when her dad was out working late, Pan caught her stepmother stealing jewelry from her mother’s old jewelry box. Pan told her stepmother that those were her mommy’s, but the stepmother brushed the child off. Pan got mad and grabbed the box, running away with it. the stepmother chased her out into the streets. Pan tripped on a bunch of vines out in the front garden and was hit by a car and killed her soul returned and possessed the body of a recently deceased fawn by the side of the road where her body laid. she chased away the stepmother from her father, but her father was terrified of the deer demon. Pan ran off into the woods until she met another deer demon who became her adopted father

Blitz was a solider fighting in ww2. he wasn’t the best guy for fighting. he was small, round, and cowardly, but he did a good job at cheering up his fellow men with jokes. he even had a beautiful wife waiting for him back home, and she was the love of his live. he couldn’t wait to get back to her. one day while waiting in the fox hole, he noticed one of his comrades looking pretty angry. Blitz tried to make the guy laugh, but the man wanted nothing more for Blitz to shut up. he told him he didn’t think he was funny and he even went as far as insulting his wife. Blitz was so distraught and angered by this man that he fought him right there in the trenches. an enemy pilot had dropped a bomb down on top of them. Blitz was killed while the man survived, but just barely. Blitz’s soul possessed a fox and he entered the infirmary tent, slaying the man who refused to laugh at his joke

so yeah just some rough stuff cuz I probably have to do a lot of research into these time periods and such but still fun!
