13 Moons Reading Challenge 2024
It's been a while since I updated my reading challenge, but my time to read is slowly decreasing, as I have to work and study for this summer exams' session, too. I think that for the next couple of moons I'll settle my goal for just one book/month. Anyway, here are the prompts of the latest moons I've missed - as always, the beautiful idea of creating a reading challenge based on the moon phases is by @readnburied !
Reading goal for now — Partial Lunar Eclipse: 26 books
Pink Moon
Book about women empowerment: Of Love and Shadows (D'amore e ombra), by Isabel Allende. ☆☆☆☆☆
Wow. What was this book. When I say that most of the times, you can see the difference between a book written by a man or a woman, I always think of the way Allende has with words. I found everything I needed inside these pages, love is merged with violence and tragedies that aren't meant to disgust the reader in a insensitive-gore way; everything is narrated with a touch of depth, of feelings, of care. Every action has its consequences, and the emotional side is never forgotten, but rather enlighted. This book talks about the cruelties of the Chilean dictatorship, the rage and the pain of the silenced, the genuine affection and sense of justice that keep awake the fire of the dissent. And since it's written by Allende, for me it's automatically also about women empowerment - which was obviously a transversal theme here. I loved it just as much as it was difficult keep on going from a certain point, but I felt like I owed it to all the people who experienced that pain on their own skin, who hadn't the privilege of just reading it from the pages of a book. But it was awesome, and sad, and hopeful. Please read something written by Isabel Allende.
Flower Moon
Book with an animated cover: The Double (Il Sosia), by Fëdor Dostoevskij. ☆☆☆☆
Dostoevskij never ceases to amaze me everytime I read something written by him. This book in particular wasn't even one of my faves, but it still kept me enterteined and at some point I couldn't stop reading; he's literally the one author for whom I must always read the preface. It's not a bad thing, it's actually the best in my opinion: I just have to know every single interpretation of the stuff I just read, the critics, the philosophical though behind it all. Mark my words that if I do that, it means that I need more, that I liked what I read so much that I need to dug deeper. I don't think I have something more to say about this book, it was confusing and intricated enough to understand some things, while also letting the interpretation of the reader take over to put all the pieces together in the end.
