Helluva Boss Critical Community –
Of course not every single stan does this, but I've seen a pattern of behavior in the more toxic side of the fandom that is important to beware of: Sealioning.
Tumblr media
"Sealioning (also sea-lioning and sea lioning) is a type of trolling or harassment that consists of pursuing people with relentless requests for evidence, often tangential or previously addressed, while maintaining a pretense of civility and sincerity ("I'm just trying to have a debate"), and feigning ignorance of the subject matter".

DARVO is an acronym for "deny, attack, and reverse victim and offender". It refers to a reaction that alleged perpetrators of wrongdoing, particularly sexual offenders, may display in response to being held accountable for their behavior. Some researchers and advocates have indicated that it can be as a common manipulation strategy of psychological abusers. An abuser (or alleged abuser) denies the abuse ever took place, attacks the person that alleged abuse (often the victim) for attempting to hold the abuser (or alleged abuser) accountable for their actions, and claims that they are actually the victim in the situation, thus reversing what may be a reality of victim and offender. It often involves not just "playing the victim" but also victim blaming.
Flying monkeys is a term used in popular psychology, mainly in the context of narcissistic abuse, to describe people who act on behalf of a narcissist towards a third party, usually for an abusive purpose (e.g. a smear campaign). The phrase has also been used to refer to people who act on behalf of a psychopath, for a similar purpose. The term is not formally used in medical practice or teaching. The term is from the winged monkeys used by the Wicked Witch of the West in the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (and the subsequent films based on it) to carry out evil deeds on her behalf. Abuse by proxy (or proxy abuse) is a closely related or synonymous concept.
Abuse by proxy occurs when an abuser uses another person to abuse a victim on their behalf. The abuser can be doing this for a variety of reasons, such as to avoid detection, to humiliate the victim, or to make the victim believe that everyone hates them.
Sealioning (also sea-lioning and sea lioning) is a type of trolling or harassment that consists of pursuing people with relentless requests for evidence, often tangential or previously addressed, while maintaining a pretense of civility and sincerity ("I'm just trying to have a debate"), and feigning ignorance of the subject matter. It may take the form of "incessant, bad-faith invitations to engage in debate", and has been likened to a denial-of-service attack targeted at human beings. The term originated with a 2014 strip of the webcomic Wondermark by David Malki, which The Independent called, "..the most apt description of Twitter you'll ever see".
Ad nauseam is a Latin term for an argument or other discussion that has continued to the point of nausea. For example, "this has been discussed ad nauseam" indicates that the topic has been discussed extensively and those involved have grown sick of it. The fallacy of dragging the conversation to an ad nauseam state in order to then assert one's position as correct due to it not having been contradicted is also called argumentum ad infinitum (to infinity) and argument from repetition.

I mean if they say "my uncle works on a farm and says..." at least there IS a source, however dubious
so often it's just claims with no mention of source at all, like they were born with this correct information stored in there brain or something
recently, when I asked someone for sources for their claims, they replied with "oh, you're sea-lioning!" - the meaning of which I also had to look up btw! ("a type of trolling or harassment that consists of pursuing people with relentless requests for evidence, often tangential or previously addressed, while maintaining a pretense of civility and sincerity ('I'm just trying to have a debate'), and feigning ignorance of the subject matter.")
Like, no, I'm not incessantly asking for sources. I'm asking you for sources for your claim THIS ONCE because I happen to have found other information, which I have given you sources for in my reply.
They quickly deleted that reblog, though:
Tumblr media
But what they said in it was that they didn't want to engage with me because I was asking for sources for their claims. 🤷
Has anyone else in the vegan community experienced something like this?
Sincerely,
the "vegan" 😂
I also find it frustrating that in debates vegans will use sources from credible health/climate orgs and still be met with silence. Then the carnist will be like ‘but my uncle works on a farm…’ or ‘but a dairy farmer said…’ and get people racing to be the first one to reblog with the caption ‘This tho ☝️☝️☝️!!!’
It PAINS me to see pro vegan posts with plenty of sources get no attention but a meat-eater can post straight up misinformation and get at least 50k notes full of people agreeing. And when the side of the debate that’s winning is made-up it’s really depressing.
yes. its so fucking frustrating. and it shows how little interest people have in good faith debates :/ that's really something that i learned with veganism and that i've noticed more with other issues now as well. how many apparently "well-meaning" people disregard any and all evidence that does not support their bias

from wikipedia: Sealioning is a type of trolling or harassment that consists of pursuing people with relentless requests for evidence, often tangential or previously addressed, while maintaining a pretense of civility and sincerity, and feigning ignorance of the subject matter. It may take the form of "incessant, bad-faith invitations to engage in debate",[5] and has been likened to a denial-of-service attack targeted at human beings.[6] The term originated with a 2014 strip of the webcomic Wondermark by David Malki,[7] which The Independent called, "the most apt description of Twitter you'll ever see".
