butterfly motif 🦋& vedic astrology

ive wanted to exclusively dedicate a post towards the use of the butterfly motif in pop culture, so here it is!! i think butterflies have had a re-emergence in fashion in the last few years and im here for it!!

🦋 as i've mentioned in many other posts, the nakshatras closely tied to using this motif repeatedly are the pisces rashi nakshatras of ubp and revati along with punarvasu nakshatra.

my own take is that, since pisces is the final rashi and the point of "absolution" it represents the end of chrysalis, when all elements have come together to create transformation; in pisces there is nothing left to do, but seek liberation from these cycles (its purpose is moksha,after all) and dissolve entirely into the cosmic ocean.

a butterfly is a beautiful symbol, representing not only the death of the creature that inhabited the cocoon but also reminding us that that death is necessary because only then can something as beautiful as a butterfly emerge from within that womb. the womb is the source of creation but you're not meant to stay there forever, that's not just stagnancy, that's death. birth is a painful process because you're leaving behind the only place you've ever known but you have no other option so you must be brave enough to face it.

this brings us to the connection of punarvasu nakshatra to butterflies. punarvasu's deity is goddess Aditi who is creation itself; she is the cosmic mother, she created this universe. in pisces, you seek liberation from the cycles of life but in punarvasu, life, the universe, creation itself takes place. thus it represents the butterfly emerging from the cocoon to claim its identity as a butterfly because the life it led before that was a non-life, it wasn't yet a butterfly, it was a non-being. goddess Aditi embodies infinite space and primordial vastness. what better way to represent the cosmic abundance than with a symbol like a butterfly? 🦋you cannot ask who created you because you are your own creation

Why I think Nocturne is way better than the OG Castlevania series

Sorry, when I try to shut up about this show I be like

so here’s my unsolicited, highly biased word vomit that will contain spoilers at the end (but those will be under a cut) so read at your own risk! Okay, leggo

It’s actually diverse.

One thing about high fantasy is that it’s almost always Eurocentric. Even if it’s not set in Europe, the characters are gonna inexplicably have British accents because we associate that with high fantasy. We’re gonna have European style “old” clothing choices. And if everyone isn’t white, they might as well be because they’ll only throw in a couple ambiguously brown side characters and call it a day. Or if they make a main character a POC then best believe everyone around them will be white.

Nocturne, tho? Oh, you can tell it’s made with more than just a sprinkle of representation. They didn’t just make Olrox indigenous, they tied his Aztec lineage in beautifully. Annette was a slave but it’s not flattening her character because of it. Drolta came to slay but even she has her authentic background. Which leads me to my next point!

The Black characters especially are done tastefully.

Like… don’t get me wrong. I love Isaac. He was the only reason I stayed tuned into Castlevania past season 1, LMAO! But his backstory felt like straight trauma porn cooked up by a non-Black person who wanted an excuse to see a Black man whipped for character development.

Zodwa Nyoni wrote some episodes for Nocturne and she put her FOOT in it. When it came to addressing Annette’s time as a slave, her connection to the Orisha through her bloodline… I was gobsmacked at how accurate everything was and now I know why LOL! Like, for me, it’s always gonna be hard to see slavery in fiction but I can’t say shit bad about how it was tied into everything in this show. Annette’s ancestors play such a huge part in her growth and it just warmed my heart to see a Black girl whoop some colonizer ass without it feeling hamfisted. 🥹

The token relationship is the cishet one, everyone else is gay asf

I love that trope flipped on it’s head, ngl LMAO! I, by default, HC everyone as bi anyway but MAN was it nice to see Olrox and Mizrak speedrun enemies to lovers and a hint of Drolta’s devotion/gayness to Erzsebet.

I know the majority of my fictional character thirsting leans male but don’t get it twisted; I jump for JOY for gay shit in media 😂 The only reason I don’t thirst as hard for female characters is because I prefer my men fictional but my women real.

That being said, this series sent me into bi panic and I’d like to be manhandled in a room by Drolta and Olrox.

Nocturne’s first season plays out neater than the OG’s first season.

Like… okay. My main beef with the OG series was that after they defeated Dracula, the rest of the show felt like a meandering fanfic. Sure, there were a few badass moments, but the energy kinda faltered for me and I was bored with a lot of it. I hope they don’t do the same with Nocturne; they left off at a nice cliffhanger which builds anticipation for the next season and… idk it feels more cohesive already? They coulda speedran kicking Erzsebet’s face in like the OG trio did to Dracula but I’m so glad they left us a lil something to look forward to.

OG Write Up :

I’ve been dreaming of an all red, heart throbbing look for quite some time. Red is one of my favorite colors to work with. It just speaks to me. I wanted to do something that would allow me to embody my bold side a little bit more. The concept for this shoot was created in 2020. In 2021, I met photographer Miesha Williams and creative director/consultant and production designer Christiani! They were the perfect duo to bring my vision to life! We exchanged ideas of what this moment would look like then, in the blink of an eye, I was on set! They challenged me with new poses, a little bit of climbing and a lot of balancing! I definitely was inspired to get back in the gym after shooting! I was shocked because it’s giving very much Savage Fenty ad campaign???? And that wasn’t in the plan! Wether you want to believe it or not, a lot of the things I do and create are done alone. I’m thankful to the few friends and photographers who have offered their services and taught me things along the way. What made this shoot such an amazing experience was the amount of support I received from Miesha and Christiani! They are a force to be reckoned with! They are so skilled in their craft and on top of that have hearts of gold. I’m hoping to do more collabs in the future!

Derma Natufian Niacinamide Serum - Cue DJ Khaled's ANOTHER ONE lol!

Fairy Skin Premium Brightening Suncreen - a Tiktok budol! I have to try it for myself since this product was AFFORDABLE! Like I think Php 150 ($2.75) I was happy to use up this product because I could put alot of this without having to think to save this product since the price was cheap. I did notice a bit of pilling when blending to my skin but that wasn't a negative to me because I don't put on make up that much. I actually have another one saved just in case lol.

Issy and Co. Brow Refiner - This came with another product when I bought it, it was a set. I tried religiously to put it on my brows every night. Since my brows needed some help but unfortunately I did not see any changes. I gave up on the product. I think this is just Castor Oil (don't quote me on that) I have tried Castor Oil before but did not work on me. I did threw it out with a little bit of product left but then again.. useless.

Simple Moisturizing Facial Wash - Another one from Bestie! This product was okay. Did not really feel a massive difference on my skin, only my skin feels soft after washing but that's it. I think it's more for people with drier skin (I have oily skin). But again, it's okay did not make me break out tho.

                                                     Lip Oils Detail Costemics Plumping Jelly Lip Oil - I just wanna try out the product plus it's a local brand so meaning it was not a huge break on my bank. Did not really see the plumping effect but you can feel it. It's cooling and that feeling of plumping but gone after a few minutes of applying it. It's a thumbs down. Sorry.

Fenty Beauty Mini Universal Lip Luminizer in fu$$y - So I don't use it at night but since it's already included it the picture, Imma include it in this category. I have very pale lips (anemic probs) so did not really see the very sheer pigment of this gloss. Since it's a mini, there was very little product. Looks good on the lips tho, not lightweight (for me) but still comfortable. I like the shimmers. Use it on top of lipstick? Ugh.. PASS lol. I hate topping clear gloss or sheer glosses on top of lipstick. I know I know. But I just don't like getting the applicator getting another shade of liptstick, gives me the ick.

BLK Cosmetics Lip Oil - Another okay product. It's not giving long lasting. Lol. But it is giving spilling when the product is closed. Bruh. I was over it.

Strokes Silk Kiss Lip Oil in Passionate Peach - I'm actually amaze at myself for buying ONE product from this brand and put up with the shipping. It's OG price is Php 348 ($6.39) but they mostly go on sale. If you can't tell by that statement, it's a great product! I'm surprised honeslty. This one is moisturizing, long lasting and they have a variety of cute shades. I believe it is my 2nd lip oil from this brand it can be used on its own or on top of lipstick which btw lemme just clear up my earlier statement from before it's okay (for me) to use pigmented glosses on top of lipstick if it's the same shade or close. But clear glosses? NO. Oh and let's not forget the downside.. the spilling!!!! Like the one from BLK Cosmetics.

Ellana Mineral Cosmetics Calm Skin Cleansing Oil - I looove cleansing oils! I actually prefer them than balms. It's great! It's supposed to do what it claims to do. No ragrets. No negative review on this product.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion: Eyeshadow tends to crease on her eyelids. This primer applies on very easily, stays on the whole night, and do not crease at all.

Benefit Roller Lash Curling Mascara: My mom does not like to use an eyelash curler. The apparatus is scary. The formula is not dry, and it lengthens/fills out her lashes. Also, it doesn’t irritate her sensitive eyes.

Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer: This product is multipurpose. My mom is a minimalist. It can be used as a bronzer and eyeshadow. My mom enjoys a monochromatic look. The matte finish is great for her oily skin. She hates being shiny and having texture on her skin.

Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer: The shade that she has is in “Fenty Glow”. It is a flattering color for her, and my mom does not like bright colors. But she does not gravitate to strictly nude lip colors. There is a bit of color in this lip gloss. Also, the lip gloss is not sticky.

IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream Full-Coverage Foundation with SPF 50+: This product has an impressive amount of sunscreen. The formula does not cause patches on her mature skin. Also, the product is part of clean beauty (free of sulfates, parabens, and phthalates). She enjoys the light coverage.

"Don't Know Who to Watch" on YouTube Now That Jenna Marbles is on Hiatus? Here are 10 Black YouTubers You Can Support in Her Absence:

Nyma Tang: Nyma is a make-up and beauty vlogger who has a popular series called "The Darkest Shade" where she tries out the darkest shade from foundation launches and sees if they will work for her complexion. She's funny, honest, and provides a lot of useful information about makeup regardless of your skin tone.

Nathan Zed: Nathan's been a YouTuber since 2011, where he originally went under the name TheThirdPew. He took a break to finish school, but is back and better than ever. Nathan does comedy sketches and commentary, and is incredibly funny.

Patricia Bright: Patricia is somewhat of a Jack of All Trades. While her content started as beauty and lifestyle, she's recently launched a second channel dedicated to educating her followers on financial literacy. You can access that channel, called The Break Platform, here.

Khadi Don: Khadi is also an ex-viner turned YouTube sketch comic, and she's one of the few female sketch comedians on YouTube. Her videos are often parodies of famous Black movies. Khadi also recently posted a video detailing her struggles with depression and anxiety, and the difficulty of being a comedian who struggles with those issues.

amandabb: Amanda is a social commentator and a self proclaimed "ranter". Her videos often dissect pop culture, and she has a series called "Everything Wrong with ______" where she talks about different television shows. Amanda also just posted two really good videos talking about Shane Dawson and the idea of "cancel culture".

Jackie Aina: Jackie is probably the OG popular Black makeup vlogger. She's been YouTube for around 10 years now, and continues to break ceilings for Black women on the platform. While Jackie is no stranger to YouTube-Beauty-Guru-style drama, she has seized every opportunity for growth and self reflection, and her authenticity shows clearly in her videos. She uses her platform to advocate for representation for Black women, specifically dark skinned Black women, both in the makeup world and in everyday life. (Her editing is also hilarious.) Jackie has also unfortunately been the victim of persistent and unfathomable racism, including from her fellow makeup YouTuber, Jeffree Star.

Bonus: it's not a YouTuber, but you can watch A Black Lady Sketch Show on HBO's YouTube Channel here. It's a sketch comedy show made entirely by Black women, and heavily features queer Black icons as well. It's also hilarious.

3 & 4. Untiled (Black is) / Untitled (Rise) x Sault

“I can’t think of any projects more timely for this year than these two albums. They spoke to Black pain, weariness, and resilience in a way that felt mores insightful than preachy. A lot of the drums used on this project had an ancestral feel to them and the use of strings was extremely effective in giving it cinematic energy. The interludes also spoke to the difficult emotions many Black people grappled with this year while maintaining a musically rich sound.”

5. The Angel You Don’t Know x Amaarae

“I first discovered Amaarae as a featured artist on one of my favorite music submissions of the year ‘NASA’ by Rvdical The Kid. I became entrenched upon my first listen to her first full-length project which is a mixture of afro-fusion, R&B, electronic, alté, and alternative hip hop. I love her animated voice and how effortlessly she glides over the track. I enjoy artists who can fuse multiple genres together and make them sound like a whole new sound”

6. Last Year Was Weird, Vol 2. x Tkay Maidza

“This album had a lot of surprises on it. It’s a mixture of fun-loving R&B, raging nu-metal, and 808 thumping house tracks. While there’s not much fusion in the array of genres, I appreciate her ability to showcase her eclectic range.”

7. Honey For Wounds x Ego Ella May

“This is a great self-love soundtrack. The pensiveness of this album is tempered by Ego Ella May’s jazzy vocals and even-keeled instrumentation. A very relaxing vibe to listen to during downtime or moments of solitude.”

Jay Electronica's debut album, once heralded a myth by many, has finally seen the light of day, 10 years later. It sounds godly, rich in ancestral wisdom, paralleled with classic Hov features throughout. This album to me raps a soulful tune of Black enlightenment, and feels like a really lavish ode to the Nation of Islam.

3. In Search of Lost Time x Protoje

"The Jamaican OG delivers a sonically wise lesson on life, what it means to live in our truths and light in search of happiness and prosperity as a free spirit. This album at many times served as a soundtrack to my life, a saving grace from my own insecurities and struggles amidst a very unsettling year."

4. I Shine, U Shine x RIMON

"Amsterdam-based artist RIMON delivered a sonically pleasing project shortlisted with a blend of melancholy neo-soul/R&B influenced melodies. This project evokes raw relatable emotions and centers the beauty of the imperfect for full display. With each listen the lyrics pierced my heart and filled my memory of love lost and love found."

"The title is self-explanatory. Duckwrth gave us all that we deserved and dropped a bomb ass feel-good record. SuperGood gave me all the contemporary neo-funk grooves I've come to love about Duckwrth. Listening to this project made it easy to tune out all the noise of 2020 and just dance my sorrows away."

7. B7 x Brandy

"Brandy, now indie and seasoned in the industry, answers to no one and that's made clear with her experimental R&B sounds on B7. This project is fearless and sounds so different from previous Brandy albums, but delivers in that same angelic aesthetic and powerhouse vocals we've come to love. B7 is criminally underrated in my opinion and will stand the test of time. "

"Thundercat delivers another soothing jazzy-bassline record. This album feels cathartic, experiential in a sense, almost as if I'm listening to a score from an intergalactic movie set in some futuristic utopia. Best enjoyed with a spliff and/or glass of wine."

"This captivating debut EP from rising reggae siren Lila Iké will make anyone a believer. The way Lila belts out these reggae-R&B infused chunes pon ya head top is mesmerizing and sets the standard for Jamaica's new generation"

10. grae x Moses Sumney

“‘grae’, a two part album, explores the complexities of identity. Moses Sumney never quite submits to the boundaries society aims to box us in. ‘grae’ is undefined in sound, Moses gracefully flows from one end of the artistic spectrum to another without landing anywhere too long. What I love most about listening to this album besides Mose's falsetto is the high level of self-awareness, the screams of escapism, and determination to exist in free agency. "
