the reason why dhmis tv feels 'less scary' to most people than the webseries is because the stoplight trio are now aware of the pattern and are more or less resigned to it (minus the occasinal breakdown) and the teachers are way less powerful than the OG teachers.

in the original series, the trio only begin to expect a teacher showing up by episode four (in fact, harry deliberately seeks one out - turning to gilbert when they need to know what the biggest thing in the world is, only to be hijacked by colin), and in that same episode, his self-awareness is rewarded by the narrative with forcible removal from the house.

the original series is a theatre of helplessness, control, and punishment. the trio remember everything that's happened to them but are unable to stop it, and get put through agonizing lessons by teachers that warp reality around them and antagonize them when they toe out of line. when they become self-aware, they're immediately punished by the show (harry getting kicked out into the real world, robin getting canned and cannibalized), and the surviving members have to keep going despite it.

in the new series, their memories are spotty but they're resigned to the teachers showing up. they expect them to the point where it's routine. AND their teachers aren't as untouchable as the old ones, and the trio can toe out of line. the briefcase leaves halfway through the lesson, the coffin gets absolutely blasted to pieces by a shovel, the family gets eaten by roy, warren gets the living shit roasted out of him before getting speared, the train dies midway through before his corpse gets used as a car, and the meter gets her batteries stolen. the trio still are helpless regarding their situation with the house and the loop, but they're nowhere near as under the mercy of the teachers as they used to be.

I was in the DHMIS fandom WAAAYYYY back in the day, and with how much love there is for Red, Yellow, and Green in modern day I almost forgot how the OG fandom used to focus on the teacher characters.

The contrast between Red Guy, who questions and tries to get out of the Teachers' songs (with the exception of episode 6 where he does a 180 and plays along as hard as he can), Yellow Guy, who is straight-up incapable of questioning the show due to having uncharges batteries (again, with the exception of 6)

And DUCK- who plays along with the show perfectly throughout. In every episode apart from 5 (and 6, iirc?) he's the catalyst who prompts the Teacher to appear. He pretty much never rebels against the teacher (unless the song doesn't go his way, like in Jobs and Family, and even then it's more about the situation itself and not the fact that it's happening in the first place). Why???

hey hey, thank you for stopping by ! also yes i do think about them, but they don't live rent free in my head as much as the OG teachers do. i'll sketch them sometimes in my notebooks if i get bored but i haven't given any of them completed "official" designs yet. here's some quick doodles i just did though because you asked:

funnily enough, i have a lot of headcanons and ideas for some of the new guys but no fully fleshed out designs. if i had to pick favorites they would definitely be tracey, briefcase, and coffin.

So anyways, gonna vent some things while im still high on dhmis brainrot.

They know about the teachers. They remember some things from the last series.

Their teachers die with time and are replaced with new ones. The new teachers are a little less violent, just mean. Their rooms dont have walls. I repeat THERES THINGS BEHIND US WHILE WE WATCH THEM. YELLOW GUY IS A ROBOT. WHAT IF EVERYBODY IS?? AT THE END OF THE DAY, THEY'RE JUST PUPPETS ON THE GIANT LESLEY GAME. BUT THEY ESCAPED, THEY RAN AWAY, THEY WERE ON THE REAL WORLD, AND LESLEY PULLED THEM BACK. YELLOW GUY IS THE YELLOW GUY OF ALL THREE LEVELS.

Red guy remembers some parts of the og show, cause he wants to ran away all the time and he hates everything and dont knows why. Yellow guy has the longest name and Duck has one letter. Theyre all assholes.

They get replaced ALL THE TIME. THEY COULD DIE EVERY EPISODE IT WOULD BE OK.

Also im completely loving how the show doesnt respect the teachers. The suitcase rans off and they dont get it back for most of the episode. Duck pees on the coffin. Everybody hates the worm. The family gets cannibalized by FUCKING ROY. The transport man dies. The electricity thing is basically high for most of the episode and they arent even there for the Time King.

Im crying and histerically laughing at the same time.

DHMIS Easter Eggs and Background Details

A huge list of a bunch of background details, foreshadowing, and Easter Eggs I noticed on my second watch-through. Note that I’m only including things that are fairly obscure, rather than “obvious” items others have already pointed out (so I’m not including the symbol sightings, for example). Feel free to add on with anything I missed.

Episode 1

In the theme song, Red Guy is “you”, which makes sense as he’s usually the audience surrogate character

Among the briefcase’s papers is a sticky note with 1906 on it

Right as the briefcase leaves, the last line is “you can be the ones who dig a hole for a funeral” as foreshadowing to the next episode

Everyone’s name tag in the factory has their name except for Yellow’s, which just says “employee”

When Bird is talking to Red in the office, he says that they’ve only been there for “9 minutes”. This is at the 14 minute mark and they got to Peterson’s at 5 minutes in, so they have indeed been there 9 minutes

According to the Carehound poster, Peterson’s is closed Mon–Sat and is open for exactly 4 minutes at 10 PM on Sun

Red Guy framed and hung the fax the fax machine gave him on the wall

Before the song starts the briefcase is rushing off to his job, but when the song ends he tells Brendon it’s time for his bath (as in, they’re going home). Meaning that teaching/torturing the puppets was the job he was rushing off to

Episode 2

The orange with eyes that was in the very first DHMIS short is in the BG when Red checks his ID card

The gel teacher appears as an inanimate object while Duck’s in the bathroom during the Big Day song

The tissue box says “sad squares” on it

Yellow’s red overalls from the ending of the DHMIS 6 short appear on his bed

The make your new friend box claims the new friend is not, in fact, toilet trained

The cassette that Duck plays is the same song from the end credits

Stain mentions “some people think we’re in a simulation” during their song, which references both the end of the OG series and episode 6 of this show

The shovel at the end of this episode cameos at the end of the original DHMIS 6 short as a teacher

There are a bunch of maggots by real!Bird’s feet at the end before they start the song

Episode 3

The Chuddle Dollops are “warm lasagna flavor”

Lillie and Todney switch their shirts from brown to black and white stripes while at their house for some reason

The picture Todney holds up appears to show Yellow holding a very Dead Duck by the leg

When Todney and Lillie are measuring their heights, the names on the wall are “grandma”, “Todney” and “Lily” (spelled with a Y)

When they measure Yellow’s height, they also measure his feet. They’re getting his measurements so they know what size to make the outfit they stick him in later

Duck has the toasted bread slice child from earlier on the table when Red drops in

Episode 4

That triangle thing from the original series shows up on the bookshelf early on

The apple teacher from the last episode also shows up on the shelf, surprisingly not eaten

The pamphlets Warren holds up for the restaurant-style meal include one for Grolton’s Chiken

The trio’s digital style avatars from DHMIS 4 show up in the BG when they go online as well as the “nothing” sign from 2 and the clown painting from 1

There’s a phone in every ep so far, probably as a reference to the role phones played in the OG series. A phone ringing is what leads Red into the office in 1, Red says you have to schedule to use the phone in 2, Lily and Todney cut the landline in 3, and there’s a phone in Yellow’s brain that Warren uses to order food

The search results on Colin include “long faced individuals in YOUR area - looking to chat!” and “long faced man VS horse - the ultimate long face showdown!”

Episode 5

The recipe note on the fridge says “rat shin”, “pie”, and “egg soup”

The photo in the kitchen background changes to a different photo each ep

Bird’s clipboard includes “one Jason” at the bottom

Bird individually counting tiles instead of counting it as one floor is valid considering the floor extends infinitely during the blackout in 6

If I’m not mistaken Red walking into another room is the first time that’s ever happened in either the show or the shorts. Usually it just cuts to them already in a different room

There’s another phone on the wall in the living room

The train teacher’s eyebrows fall off in bike form and remain gone while in car form

Mullhoven’s name is on a signpost (and the teacher) during a song transition, and the poster under it says that this is a “neighborhood watch area” with a picture of a woman (maybe meant to be Lelsey? though it doesn’t look much like her)

Roy’s face is on a pirate flag

1906 reference on the second bus, which reads “terminal 196″ in all of the destination windows

The car has a worm button in it

Bird says “we’ve already seen a dead horse”, even though they haven’t

The bill is from Roy-Electric and it’s for 19.06 pounds

Electracey’s last two numbers on her neck are 96

Final phone is the fake phone with a real phone in it. Duck also has a phone during the blackout

Drawing with the dead Duck from Episode 5 of the OG series pops up in the BG during the shredder scene

Crossword includes “Roy”, “gravel” (a nod to DHMIS 3), and “aspic” (DHMIS 5)

When Electracey is malfunctioning the sunlight outside flickers with the indoor lights, hinting at the dollhouse thing

One of the chalkboard drawings says “aspic” and another says “Roy”

Clayhill is also on the chalkboard but scribbled out

The electric clock in the house reads “20:06″ (as in June 20th)

The urn that Red smashes has Duck’s face on it, meaning it’s once again another dead Duck

There’s a decapitated Duck with a TV where the head should be, which lines up with Yellow breaking the doll in the next scene

The symbols on the book are as follows: Red’s eyes, decapitated Duck and Yellow heads (Yellow’s showing him with wires instead of blood), Roy coin from Ep 1 with a worm, battery with a worm, shovel, Tony, and Yellow’s severed hand from Ep 1

Probably gonna take me a while to finish the next batch since I started doing this immediately after I finished the previous dhmis drawing of the trio- but! I intend on making this a series. After I do the teachers I'm gonna draw the side characters from the episodes, starting with the og first then the tv series.

who are the teachers? how do the episodes play out?

is it based more on the og web series or the new show?

The AU contains both the og web series and the new show in a kinda weird mix up. I also brought up the roles in a different post, but I’ll say them again here in a more detailed explanation:

Leslie, Seymour, and Victoria play the main three with red guy being Leslie, Duck being Seymour, and yellow guy being Victoria. I chose these three purely because their color schemes kinda fit and I grew attached to their dynamic really quickly (also accidentally made them a trio of blondes-). This also makes Roy be Mr Best and Lesly is Mrs Best. As for mirror yellow guy, that’s Victor Best.

For Sketchbook, I debated between Eileen and Violet for a bit, but decided to stay on theme with the villains and make it Eileen. She’s got some creativity… in the sense that she comes up with creative ways to make it her birthday.

For Tony (aka the clock), I had absolutely no idea for a while. Then I just randomly made it Ms Question and convinced myself that it made sense. Time makes you question stuff, right?

For Shrignold (aka the butterfly), I once again had no idea who to do. But then the idea of Mr Big as a butterfly cult leader was just to hilarious to avoid. Capitalism is a cult if you think about it.

For Colin (aka the computer) this was an extremely easy choice. It’s Tobey, no questions asked.

For the food gang (the fridge, spinach can, and meat guy) this was also easy. The only appropriate characters were the food villains, Two Brains (Spinach Can), Butcher (meat guy), and Chuck (Fridge/Bread)

For Larry (aka the lamp), the running joke in the DHMIS fandom that the Lamp is drunk instantly reminded me of Timmy Tim-Bo, so here we are.

When we get to the tv series is when things get a little messy because I have no clue who some of these characters will be.

I have no clue who the briefcase and unemployed Brendon will be. My original thought was Invisibill and BLHG, so I might just go with that.

I have no clue who the coffin will be. Maybe the Coach??

The weird family is the Botsfords. Becky is Lily, TJ is Todney, etc.

Warren the Eagle instantly reminded me of Glen. Both of them have this ‘chronically online cringe loser’ vibe to them-

I’ve got no clue who the train would be. Maybe I shouldn’t make them anyone cause it’s kinda weird to turn one of the Wordgirl characters into a half dead car-

The electrical box (aka Electracy) is Rhyme. They just look similar- idk man.

For the format of the whole thing, I either wanted to do a fanfic, or maybe a comic/ask blog. I have a lot of ideas in mind for the periods in between the episodes and two series to keep things spaced out.

Feel free to ask for any references for the characters. I really should come up with consistent designs for all the characters

Oh my gosh, I watched the new DHMIS series about a week or two ago and I loved it so much!!

I was an OG fan since 2014/2015 so if you see me calling the guys Manny, Robin and Harry you’ll know why haha

I was (and still am) a fan of DHMIS human designs, they’re all so creative! (See what I did there), so I made my own version of the main cast! I hope to draw the teachers; OG series and new series, probably in a tarot card formation 😳🙌 so stay tuned
