Star Trektrospective :Star Trek V The Fianl Frontier

.....So Star Trek V is considered by some the worst film in the franchise.I dunno if I would go that far....But its a mess
Plot:Kirk(William Shatner) is on a mission to save ambassadors of the Federation(David Warner),Klingons (Charles Cooper) and Romulans (Cynthia Gouw) from a cult leader named Sybock (Laurance Luckinbill ),who is a Vulcan who is embraces emotion instead of logic and is searching for the legendery Sh Ka Ree which maybe the home of God(George Murdock )
So I am going to spoil this movie.....Not that it matters,this movie is basically filler
Look this movie is a mess.I dont think it is awful ,I like aspects.....but the movie is just fundamentally broken
As my good friend @ariel-seagull-wings has pointed out the film has various threads that could make their own movie:Kidnapped ambassadors ,Spock reunited with his brother who has embraced emotion , someone taking over the enterprise,a rengade Klingon chasing the heroes and oh yeah ,the SEARCH FOR GOD .....But they are just crammed into this one film and it doesnt work
The biggest issue is the main idea of the film,the Search for God .Now I think that is a brillaint concept for a sci fi movie ,going across the cosmos to touch the hand of the Devine .....Shame that the movie squanders it for three reasons
1.Too ambitious concept ,limited means:So at the finale of the movie we land on Sha Ka Ree and meet God who turns out not to be God but an evil entity .That is all great story stuff and that leads to some great potential for a climax :have the God entity shift reality , change into various forms like a great beast,and since he is an entity the heres would have to either escape him,trap him or find some other clever way to beat this thing.Heck the original concepts were pretty cool,Sha Ka Ree being a alien jungle paradise ,and God having an army of devils and angel like creatures ......Unfortunately budget got in the way:Sha Ka Ree is just a desert with a purple filter , and the army got dialed down to 6 rock monsters....Which was dialed down to one rock monster....Which was dialed down to nothing .The God entity is also very lame in the finished film,just a big glowy Gandalf looking dude who shoots lightning .The climax where his head is chasing Kirk going "ooooooo" is more funny then scary and he's just blown up by Klingons ....Like thats all it took to kill this thing ?
2.Shatner gets surface level but misses the potential:Again this is a movie about potentially meeting God....But there no discussion of religion ,spirituality or the charters personal faiths.We dont get why Sybock is all about meeting God other then "Hey wouldnt it be cool to meet the Almighty ? " .The film is directed by Shatner ,and I get the feeling the topic means a lot to him, similar to how Leonard Nimoys environmentalism was a driving force for Star Trek IV ,but while Nimoys message was clear, Shatners is murky ,I dont know what he is trying to say with this film.....Well other then mocking televangelists and false prophets apparently ...But even thats muddy cause while Sybock is presented as a villain....He really isnt at all ,really feels like any villainous acts he does are plot driven not character driven
3.The toooooone.....Good lord the tone: So I think of a movie about the search for God,I imagine a sweeping epic.....Paramount looked at this and thought "Hey lets make it a comedy !!!"Yup this movie is all about the gags and its ......Jarring .And if they were funny jokes I wouldnt mind but they are...Not.Scotty is hitting his head ,Bones is talking about beans,Chekov and Sulu are lost in the woods,The Enterprise is a mess,burping Klingons ,its....not funny.Also theres just odd scenes like Kirk fighting a cat girl and Uhuras naked fan dance which just confuses me because I cant see Kirk asking Uhura to do that (Also to anyone who is like "Eww people in their 50's are gross".....Grow the fuck up )
The effects arent great ,and I feel bad saying that .The effects house was inexperienced and they only had three months.However I have seen other productions do a lot with less
I sadly dont have a lot to say about the supporting cast,which is a shame cause David Warner is an amazing actor and he does NOTHING in this movie ,and that goes for the other ambassadors too.Todd Bryant and Spice Williams-Crosby play generic evil Klingons ,I honestly forget they are in the movie .Not even the Enterprise crew is that good cause Chekov,Sulu and Uhura are jut under Sybocks control (Kind of ) for a lot of the movie .Scotty has a few good moments.....Oh yeah ,also he and Uhra have a romance in this film,and Its OK ,I kind of forget its in the movie.Also while I dont like the God entity.....I think George Murdock plays it very well transitioning from wise and holy to a sadistic malevolent being
Spock is mixed in this one,we are supposed to believe his loyalties are split which....I dont buy.I wish him being reunited with his brother was a bigger deal .However he gets a great scene near the end
I really dont like Kirk in this film.Shatners performance is fine but the writing .....He is always right ,unshakeable ,one man against many and blah.The main concept of the film,I just dont buy,with Kirks crew turning against him and rightfully Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley called him out on that .This is honestly another big problem I have with the film:In Leonard Nimoys films I get that he understood everyones strengths....I dont get that with Shatner
So yeah I have bitched about this movie.....Now to get what I really love about it .I think Sybock is a great character,though not as developed as he should be .I like that he is misguded byut not evil ,an emotional Vulcan is a great idea and Laurence Luckinbill delivers a truly great performance ,very gregarious and a bit naïve.I think Luckinbill is so great he is worth watching the movie and I really but he truly loves Spock as a brother
The other great performance in this film goes to DeForest Kelley in weirdly possibly his best performance as Bones .All the humor with him works (My favorite being him calling everyone to dinner when everyone is already there ) and he gets one hell of a dramatic scene,where he relives euthanizing his father.This is Kelleys movie
I like a few individual scenes.I love the camping scene where Kirk ,Spock and McCoy are talking about life (And I am in the minority.....But I love them singing Row Row Row Your Boat ),I think the ending is very nice,I like Sybock showing the main trio their pain and Kirk rejecting it ,and I like the initial encounter with the God entity where Sybock and McCoy are in awe of him......Only to find out he is a fake and a sadistic bastard with the best line in the movie:What Does God Need With a Starship ?
My favorite scene however is a small one:The three embassodors see Sha Ka Ree,and each call it their cultures name for Paradise.Its a simple moving moment that I really like
Over all its bad ,ts definately a mess....A mess with genuinely solid moments,and its such a mess I have to reccomend it cause it is so crazy it is a bit of fun to watch

jules is part of the either the same class the ~infamous~ black sheep
and they don’t? really like each other? like julia is still kinda Serious and she doesnt really appreciate the vile squad goofing around and tossing water balloons or whatever and black sheep finds julia a little too uptight even if she’s interested in a lot of the same things (history, etc.)
black sheep’s speciality is Being SLick, as we know, but julia’s is patterns (and also historical artifacts)
ok but the important part of this is that bc julia’s is patterns, she ends up being like a scout or smth along those lines bc she can analyse patterns and report back to help plan the caper
and that basically means that when she graduates, she ends up in far more long cons than any of the others
anyway, after black sheep gets in trouble for the water balloon thing, the faculty decide she’s far too mischievous, and so, they assign her a partner — julia
(side note: its kind of the same thing that ends up happening to jean-luc and antonio a bit later on, but thats more because they work well together, and less bc either one of them needed a grounding influence)
anyway black sheep and jules again. do not like each other. but that doesnt mean they dont work well together — julia’s got an eye for patterns, and black sheep has every thieving trick in the book ready and waiting up her sleeves (alongside an instinct for thievery)
slowly, as they are forced to work together more and more, they kind of reach a less tense partnership and then one day black sheep makes a history joke and thats how they become friends
like julia is still very pointedly Not friends with the rest of the vile squad bc they’re still very reckless and immature, etc
but shes sort of seen black sheep when she’s been more grounded and less hyper/feral and she?? kind of doesnt mind??
bc grounded black sheep isnt constantly trying to prove that she’s The Best and grounded black sheep isnt trying to prove that she’s more than just the teacher’s pet — she’s kind of just having fun with julia and julia’s been so serious about her training that she hasnt really made any other friends and…. its nice
its nice to have black sheep loudly slip into the seat next to her and and tease julia about whatever recent historical discovery she’s researching and pull her out of her own head once in a while
and its nice to have black sheep glance over in the middle of class when sheena — sorry tigress — whines about something or the other and roll her eyes in the same way julia feels like doing, even if something strange sticks in her throat when carmen does the same with gray
she can’t pinpoint the exact moment, but at some point, she starts thinking of black sheep as her friend and it’s an exciting enough thought that she’s got a little smile on her face next time black sheep slips into the seat next to her in professor maelstrom’s class
and at some point julia stops being just julia to black sheep, and starts being jules because we’re in a school for thieves, but we’ve already got plenty of ~jules~ right here and thats sincerely the worst joke i’ve ever heard and oh really ~jules~? bet i could find an even worse one
and like all the usual stuff is still happening in the background — shadowsan-black sheep rivalry, gray and the Squad being black sheep’s friends, the phone and player, etc.
its just that now, black sheep has a bit of a calming influence and that does help!
and they work well enough that most people assume that julia and black sheep will be partners after graduation 
even crackle acknowledges it — despite the jealousy he feels at the knowledge
so things continue and all this happens, but then comes finals.
things go the same. black sheep gets perfect scores in all of her exams, except stealth 101
julia — now the historian — can’t help but check for whether black sheep graduated too and just as she does, she hears crackle say it: she didn’t pass
and she wants to go to black sheep and ask if she’s okay because everyone knows how much black sheep’s wanted this, how much she’s been working for it, but by the time gray’s been dragged off by tigress, black sheep has disappeared and julia has no idea where she’s gone
so she waits for a bit in the cafeteria and in the dorms and anywhere else she thinks that black sheep would be and she sees… nothing
and about twelve hours after the results, the faculty pulls her for her first mission (for context, this is before the whole,,, hear the true name of vile thing) which is basically being a plant for the morocco mission, by pretending to be an archaeology phd student from oxford who’s come to study the findings in the excavation
and she’s busy enough with that that she barely gets to think about black sheep or graduation or anything other than the near-overwhelming anxiety that comes with the horrifying ordeal of potentially being Known but she just manages to figure out like,,, guard rotations, as well as the exact objects that are at the site for the vile squad to steal
and then she’s out before they even get there — julia’s pattern recognition and historical knowledge made her pretty useful when it comes to planning capers so it meant that she’s always travelling around the world ahead of each caper, but would also make her a pretty invaluable asset to vile, so they can’t afford to get her caught
julia doesnt hear about black sheep nearly messing up morocco until much later, and even then, she doesn’t have all the info
all she can do is wonder why the hell the faculty would fail someone who somehow managed to sneak out of vile island without anyone realising until much later
and yes, maybe a part of her misses her old partner, but she knows that it wouldn’t matter anyway — she was the mole, and she’d barely get to work directly with carmen so.
but then cut to a year later, when a vile counterfeit operation in boston is suddenly sabotaged
cut to the moment when, julia, despite not having seen her in a year, is still able to somehow recognise black sheep’s work
its Slick. its the Slickness that tips her off, and part of her is reluctant to tell the faculty who it is, but her allegiance demands it and she tells the faculty and she hates herself for it when she sees the murderous rage on each of their faces
and somehow, that — her ability to recognise this carmen sandiego — gets her in a new position, as a mole in interpol, passing on the information they get as they try to track the scarlet super thief as well
and then one day, in poitiers, julia sees her
its black sheep. it’s undeniably black sheep under that red trench coat and julia wants to go and talk to her capture her and bring her in to vile but her new partner ~chase devineaux~ is everything that once made her turn away from her interest in law enforcement and he orders her to call for backup while he tries to stroke his own ego
she does, of course, but maybe she delays it a bit, if only because she’d rather let carmen sandiego get away than have devineaux’s ego get any bigger
and the rest of the season goes much the same except after julia ends up in acme, she reports to vile about everything that’s going on, and they no longer suspect devineaux of helping carmen etc etc
and she can’t help but somewhat sympathise with what carmen’s doing — she’s returning invaluable historical artefacts and julia’s always loved history and- it’s just… altruistic. and that’s admirable. and that’s the only reason i feel so torn about helping vile. that’s it, that’s the only reason.
and then comes the chasing paper caper
what was originally the first real conversation between julia and carmen goes completely differently
(note that most vile operative outside of jules’ graduating class do not know of her existence bc she barely interacts with most of them since she’s more a spy/mole who’s out of the picture by the time anyone else gets on the scene)
carmen still needs to be able to spy on paper star without anyone noticing, so she still goes for the seat right in front of the cute short-haired girl sitting alo- and oh my god jules?
and its the first time julia has heard that nickname in over a year and oh God they were just friends this should Not hit this hard what the Heck
and carmen still sits down and just quietly grills her as to what the hell is going on bc she Knows that jules is a always a mole and never an active part of a caper and she doesn’t?? understand??
and jules is kind of in a daze, but she’s been Trained so she feeds carmen her cover story:
she defected from vile when she saw how they were treating historical artefacts — melting down gold, selling priceless works of art to the highest bidder, etc. etc. — and that since then she’s been silently helping interpol with taking down vile ops, etc.
and it takes a bit but carmen kind of starts to believe it — she knows julia loves history with all her heart, and she’s… well, she’s never been the kind of recruit that carmen’s expected to see in vile anyway, so. it’s not out of the realm of possibility, is it, for julia to be a defector working against vile? after all, isn’t she the same?
so she starts looking around, while waiting for paper star to make a move, and she ends up noticing the briefcase in the seat next to her, and for some reason, those initials — clearly chase devineaux — make her want to scowl
“new partner?” “oh… its… well, work. work... partner” “oh.”
uhhh anyway i might actually. write this? idk don’t count on anything lmaooo.

Request for anon: Gib the angst with grandpa enji and grandma rei. Grandbb gets hurt b a d due to smth and 😬😬😬
(Ojiisan is granddad in Japanese, the fir al version of it anyway. Jiji is informal, baba is the informal version of grandma)
Hero work was risky. Enji knew this. He knew better than anyone you can be fine one minute and dying the next but he still never fathomed it happening to /you/. He didn't /want/ to.
And then he gets a panicked call, from Shouto, and it sounds like he's crying, like he can't breathe. And in seconds, his retirement is thrown out of the window. His old costume is on and Reis concerned- he doesn't even have time to explain it all to her, just that you /need/ help.
When he arrives, the scene is at a stand still. Heros unsure of the next move, unsure of how to progress without hurting the situation and Shouto- although his exterior remained calm, endeavor could see it in his eyes. He was panicking. The facade cracked a little upon seeing his father, his expression turned sorrowful, sour and concerned, all at once; for just a split second before he returned to collected.
"She's in there, in the rubble. She got hit before he went down. He's in there with her but he's hurt. They both are."
"Negotiator?"
"Tried, he won't budge."
Enji nodded, mentally racking over plans and strategies- that green haired kid would be useful right now. But he was away, in America, probably watching it all go down on tv. So for now, Enji was alone in strategizing.
"I want the building stabilized and watched. Men on ever corner, exit and window of this place. The girl is first priority. If there is a choice between her and him, let him go. Do I make myself clear?"
There was a chorus of 'Yes sirs', both from special forces and heros that would be initiated in the plan.
He gaze flickered from the building back to those in front of him and he continued his explanation. This needed to be executed carefully- very carefully.
Casualties were at a low but he sure as hell wasn't going to add to that number, especially with you.
His plan was explained and he received confirmation, then it was put into action. His son on his right and ground zero on his left, the plan was initiated.
They used distractions and the stormed the building- probably not the smartest, but it's all they had right now.
Enji didnt care about anything else but you. He didn't care about the chaos ensuing around him. He didn't care about the others he saw. He did however, care about that blood trail. It could be you. Or it could be him.
He looked over to Shouto who nodded. "I'll take this one, you take the other."
"Got it," Shouto agreed with a small nod before taking off in the other direction.
Enji followed it, eyes scanning his surrounds with frevor- analyzing everything in his path. The blood trail dotted; it got light until it stopped, just outside a closed door. He wasted no time opening it. He scrunched his nose. It smelled foul.
Then he saw you. Crumpled in the corner in a pool of blood and his heart stops. It feels like the world is crashing around him because Fuck- you looked dead.
"Shouto!" He calls, his head turning towards the door but his gaze remains on you.
He's quick to get to you, kneeling down and putting his finger under your nose
You're breathing. Oh thank fuck, you're breathing.
He gently moves your arm, which is cradled over your stomach. It looks broken- its bruised and swollen and he doesnt like the blossoming purple patches along it. But your suit is ripped too, theres a large gash on your stomach and he cringes at the blood. He gently moves the sticky fabric off the wound. It was deep and tissuey- he could vaguely see the bruises beginning to form on your ribs- he didn't like that either. You were hurt, bad. Really bad.
He slides an arm under your back and the other under you leg to pick you up, almost crying in relief when you /move/. It's just a squirm but it's something, at least
He's /praying/ that you make it through, immediately thinking of the worst scenarios. They're playing over in his head.
A groan pulls him from his thoughts and he looks down, watery eyes peer into his. They're lidded and tired and scared; he let's out a breath he didnt know he was holding.
"Oj-Jiji-" You groan out, gripping his arm. Your head his on his shoulder, hair knotted and dirty, face covered in layers of dust and dirt. But the tear streaks are obvious.
"Firefly," He whispers, "it's okay,"
"It hurts," You whimper. "It hurts so much-"
"I know, I know. We're getting you out of here-"
"Did you find her- oh god," Shouto paled upon seeing you. He stumbled into the room, placing a cool hand on her cheek. You leaned into the touch.
"Dad," you kept her hand on Enjis arm, your grip tightening.
"Princess you're gonna be okay, alright? It's not- It's not that bad. We're gonna get you out and to a hospital,"
"If you're gonna lie," you mumble, "make it convincing. I know it's bad."
"You're gonna be fine baby, I promise you, you're gonna be okay."
He gently hands you to Shouto. "Go, I'll take care of things here. I'll meet you at the hospital. Go quickly."
"Jiji-"
"I'll be there soon, Firefly," he kissed your forehead.
"Jiji I love you," It was small, panicked and scared. But you wanted him to know, you wanted him to know in case you didn't make it. You'd lost blood. A lot of it. He could see it in the way you spoke. The adrenaline started to wear down by the time Shouto had entered the room.
You were crashing again and he hated it but there was nothing else he could /do/.
"I love you too, Firefly."
You let out a quiet cry, gripping your fathers shirt, looking behind him at your granddad as he carried you out. It hurt to breathe, it hurt to keep your eyes open. Black dotted your vision and you could vaguely hear someone calling your name as the world faded.
Rei sat quietly in the waiting room chair, her leg bounced and she chewed the inside of her cheek. Her hand held her son's tightly as her husband paced in front of them.
He should've gotten their sooner, he should've known it was happening. He should've been there to help her.
"Enji," Reis voice ripped him from his thoughts. The nasty thoughts running through his head a mile a minute.
They'd taken you in for emergency surgery. The bruises- those were from him. But the gash was deep. Deeper than Enji had originally thought. And with the blood lost, it wasn't looking too good.
"Are you alright?" His deep voice rumbled, the concern evident.
"Baby, come here." She whispered, holding her hand out. "You've been pacing for hours. Sit down. Relax."
He hesitated. Could he really? Could he really just sit? Shouto had zoned out. For what felt like forever his just stared at the ground, before he fell asleep with his head on his mothers shoulder. Natsuo and Fuyumi were somewhere- he wasn't sure where at the moment.
He supposed he could calm himself down enough, try to breathe through it. So he did. He walked over and sat down, sighing when her hand slipped into his.
"She'll be okay," Rei whispered. "She's strong. She's resilient. And there's a great team working on her. It's-It's going to be okay."
"I don't know," he mumbled. "She looked bad when we finally got to her. She was so pale," he squeezed her hand. "And there was so much blood. I should've gotten there sooner."
"No, you can't blame this on yourself. This isn't anyones fault. You did your job and you brought her home."
"But did I bring her home right? Did I bring her home alive?"
"Yes."
And Rei was right. He did bring you home alive. The surgery was a success. You stabilized, you regained the color in your face, normal breathing and heart rate.
They stitched you up, fixed a few broken ribs- sewed up that cut on your chin. They used a quirk for your arm, that seemed to be the easiest but for the others it was too risky.
So the Todoroki family sat in the small hospital room, around your bed, just waiting. They held small conversations, took turns sleeping; though Todoroki needed it the most. He kept putting it off.
"Aw- don't tell me you've all been waiting here. You all are getting soft," a voice mumbled.
Enji looked up and smiled. "You're awake."
"Princess," Shouto leaned foward and kissed your forehead. "How're you feeling?"
"I mean- all things aside, fine. It's a party in here though, you having fun?"
"I'm going to hit you." Natsuo narrowed his eyes.
"Can't hit a cripple," you hum. "Nice try though, Uncle."
"You almost died, yet here you are, cracking jokes."
"Yes. That's how I handle uncomfortable situations. You know this. I blame Auntie."
"I blame your father." Fuyumi rolled her eyes.
Shouto looked up, saying something back. Enji had turned them out.
"You feel okay?" He asked, eyes trained on you.
"I mean, it hurts a little but I'm okay." You smiked softly. "Thank you for finding me. I'm sorry you had to though."
"Don't apologize. You did nothing wrong. I'm just glad your okay," he swiped his thumb across your cheek gently.
It was okay after all.

ghostburs lack of memories between the announcement of pog2020 winning (right before he revealed that schlatt2020 ended up winning instead due pooling votes with swag2020 in the timeline we got) and november 16th is interesting, because ghostbur could also be a look at the wilbur that won the election, so i just kinda want to go over ghostbur moments that made me think "oh thatd be a cool possibility". (yes ik in canon ghostbur only remembers happy memories)
ghostbur has no idea who schlatt is, and since when schlatt originally visited the smp (n got banned), nobody was playing their smp characters yet, so c!wilbur obviously has no reason to know schlatt, and from the quick read through wilbur gave, it seems like schlatt would just be thrown straight into prison and then maybe play a small role in starting the second l'manburg war, but nothing much past that so wilbur probably doesnt remember because schlatt wasnt very important in his eyes
ghostbur has no recollection of the festival at all. quite a few times tommy has brought up techno killing tubbo near ghostbur, and ghostbur has a very hard time believing it (so in the pog timeline, maybe tubbo doesnt lose his second there OR he loses it to someone who isnt techno)
also ghostbur's reaction to techno saying "anarchy bros forever" (or something similar) stands out, because ghostbur seems very confused by this set of words specifically, since alivebur did come to the conclusion that government was bad, but pog timeline wilbur most likely didnt, since theres no mention of l'manburg still being blown up in the pog timeline
the ghostbur and fundy conversations are also interesting, especially the one where fundy yells at wilbur when phil decides to take fundy fishing. ghostbur seems very shocked to find out that him and fundy ever had a negative conversation, especially one so bad that it makes fundy this angry with him, and instead makes a joke about the salmon fundy is holding
ghostbur also fails to find ways to justify his actions as alivebur, almost as if he never took those actions. the one that especially stands out is when both tommy and fundy ask why wilbur made tubbo president (although both have different reasonings for asking), and every time he's asked, ghostbur can't find an answer other than "well, tubbo is capable!"
ghostbur also seems to have no memory of pogtopia. when he stumbles across it he seems very confused and unsure of what pogtopia was
theres also the time that he accidentally discovered the button room, and the way he reacts is odd, because hes obviously confused on what the button room is, as if hes never seen it (even though thats where he died, which he does remember)
the way he talks to phil as he heads to pogtopia is also interesting, because he asks how awful he was, not what he did wrong. he also tries to play off the way he feels as a joke, trying to laugh it off even though hes obviously hurt. the way he talks about keeping a legacy is also interesting, because it seems that in the pog timeline, his relationship with fundy would be a lot better (since they wouldnt be separated)
also ghostbur's reaction whenever anyone brings up any bad things alivebur did is interesting because he walks away from it and ignores it, because its not his actions
the only thing i cant fit into this idea rn is phil killing wil in the pog timeline, but if wilbur does decide that ghostbur is wilbur from the pog timeline, i think itd be a very interesting idea for ghostbur as a character

-Damn the CGI is so good in this film. Like Steve looked old but you could still see it was him. Which sounds dumb but so often, movies make it way too unrealistic to prove someone has aged. This did it just right.

So probably the best way to start this is to mention the obvious and say that Joker (2019) has pretty much all of nothing to do with...The Joker.  I had mention to someone else a week or two back, but for as much as The Joker can work in a wide variety of stories, the character is inherently limited, my go-to phrase being “one dimensional.”  The Joker’s ongoing motivation is that he wants to defeat Batman, nothing more, nothing less.  “Killing Batman” is only a single part of it, “it” being proving that Batman is fallible and has some weakness.  There are characters like The Riddler that zero in on a single aspect of that such as, surely there are some problems that can be created that even The World’s Greatest Detective cannot solve, but The Joker is a convenient character in that he can be applied to any aspect of Batman’s character, which is why you get stories like Batman and The Joker getting into a surfing contest, because it all goes back to that theme of if there’s something that Batman is not the best at, Batman is ultimately doomed to fail (with regards to suspension of disbelief that is needed for superheroes to work, both creators and the audience have to commit to the concept that superheroes existing 100% makes the world around them a better place, and a major incoming failure on Batman’s part makes for greatest suspense in that it threatens that concept.)

But then, there lies the issue.  Joker does not actually have any driving motivation for WHY he wants to defeat Batman, he simply is.  It’s my theory on why no origin story has ever permanently stuck, because you can’t ever really make sense of that.  This compounds itself into Batman and Joker’s relationship and can never really evolve, it’ll play out in the same way every time just with new set dressing.  What you can do is raise the stakes, but with the back to back publishing of “The Killing Joke” and “A Death in The Family” in 1988, raising the stakes meant making The Joker a sadistic serial killer at the cost of everything else about the character, creating a Joker where everyone questions why he deserves to be alive to appear in another comic three to six months down the pipeline.  There have been some instances of trying to make The Joker more nuanced, like Grant Morrison introducing the concept of “super sanity” in their Batman work and addressing how The Joker reinvents his personality on the fly, but it’s ultimately set dressing that doesn’t alter anything.
So, that begs the question of why Joker, the film, calls itself “Joker” in the first place or why it takes place in Gotham instead of New York and blah blah blah the short answer is if they didn’t, Warner Bros wouldn’t have been able to rake in a billion dollars.  It’s on par with Sony deciding to make Venom (2018) and never addressing why Venom has those large white eye covers if his design isn’t based on Spider-Man, I’ll give Joker (2019) the compliment that it’s more interesting than that film at least.  I really did not want to bring up all this Batman shit while watching this but then they started addressing Thomas Wayne and I began mentally groaning.  I don’t want to dive into the concept of how or if the Batman mythos is impacted if you make Thomas (and Martha Wayne, who like in most Batman stories is more of a cameo than an actual character here) a shitty person, but then again I wouldn’t have to bring that up if the film didn’t cram it in in the first place.  I am...SO...SO THANKFUL I did not see any memes or theories or head canons surrounding “B-B_BUH JOCKER IS BEETMANS HALF BROTHER?????/???” which...whatever. Come to think I didn't see anyone bitch that he doesnt become The Joker until 90 minutes in either.  I think the majority of my goodwill (what turned it from, oh you know the good outweighs the bad enough for me to be able to tell someone this is watchable, to, oh you can skip this) was destroyed at the Waynes getting shot scene with, WHOOPS, The Joker was responsible (indirectly!)  That gave me BAD Batman (1989) flashbacks, and when you remind me of Batman (1989), you kind of do get on my bad side.  Fuck that movie.

SO.  In the midst of ALLL of this.  Let’s talk about the “““real source material”““ for Joker (2019): Taxi Driver (1976) and The King of Comedy (1982).

I don’t think I’m ruffling any feathers by saying that that is the case and that both of those films are wayyy better than Joker (2019).  I mean, there’s a reason why Robert De Niro was not only cast in this film, but he’s second billed right under Joaquin Phoenix.  Those are two fairly different films but they’re, at their core, stories of men who are ticking time bombs of violence ready for someone to light the fuse.  It’s another point against Joker (2019), not only for reminding me of much better films, but forcing me to ask why another pastiche of this story needed to be told.  Martin Scorsese kind of made his career with a monopoly on men losing their shit and everyone around them being caught in the tornado.  Joker (2019) admittedly plays the material much differently, in that all the way through we are supposed to sympathize with Arthur Fleck and stand alongside him every step of this of his downward spiral, and even with where he ends up, I’ll admit I don’t have an issue with that, but the film struggles with making me care half the time.  Like, yes, when Arthur is alone at home trying not to go awol, yeah, I get that, but at other times there’s stuff like how Arthur’s relationship with Sophie is never developed in any meaningful capacity, like why is enamored with him, why is she not as disturbed by him as most other people seem to be?  When we discover she’s not real, that explains it from a logical perspective I guess, but it isn’t a shock or a gut punch.

Can I be real for a second?  There are a lot of moments in this film where it made me embarrased as a neurodivergent person.  The number of people who definitely saw this, because, once again, it made a billion dollars, and came away thinking oh so that’s what mentally ill people are like, even if they’re sympathetic about it, it makes me sigh.
Even though the crux of this film is Arthur’s descent, it desperately wants to be important.  I know I’m not the first person to make this observation, but it does read like, oh, what’s popular now?  Incels?  Better make part of Arthur’s character arc that he can’t hit up any actual real women so he has to entertain himself with fantasies.  Antifa?  Better make it so Arthur accidentally inspires a movement of nebulous anti-rich people who all wear masks.  And so on and so on with no actual commentary while simultaneously it’s not really world-building either because it’s so front and center to the plot. I gotta say, if the film is about people in general not putting up with things anymore after being shat on nonstop, why oh why is there a joke aimed at a little person pretty early on, even through some meta lense where “oh the person telling the joke is an asshat who dies later so it’s cool”?

Now I’m not sure what to say next about the film itself so I guess now would be a good time to discuss the film’s ~impact~ as it were.  If it weren’t for Parasite (2019) I’d have no problem saying this was the biggest film of 2019 in the grand scheme of things, like EVERYONE came in with every possible perspective on this thing long before it came out.  I remember how back in like, late-2017/early-2018?  A bunch of people were shitting on the announcement of this film and Warner Bros had to do damage control by releasing some on-set photos of the second subway scene two days later.  It’s surreal more than anything actually watching this film now and seeing, wait, this is what everyone was memeing about nonstop?  This is a mainstream film?  With the directions it goes in?  With the topics it brings up?  Well I’ll be damned.  This is probably the first time since Les Miserables (2013) and Man of Steel (2013) where a movie comes out and no two people have the exact same opinion on it, so I’m curious as to how Joker is going to age in like, a decade.  So fucking weird that this is called a “superhero film” in retrospect just because it shares a name with a comic book character owned by the same company that developed and distributed this.

I wouldn’t be talking about this film if it wasn’t called “Joker” but then again hey nobody else would either.  I don’t hate this film despite how I’ve said nothing positive about and I was pretty prepared to call it “barely good” before the finale, so I don’t regret watching it, I don’t know what the fuck to say anymore.  Gang Weed memes are pretty funny if you haven’t actually seen any in the wild.  1940: “Let’s throw him into chemicals.”  2019: “Let’s throw him into society.”

who are your least fave characters besides brittany? also this account is starting to make me hate brittany?? which is a good thing! i used to love her but like shes low key selfish and kinda rude. one thing that pisses me off about her is how she always says "thats bullying and i wont tolerate it" but then she doesnt do anything when she actually sees bullying?? also im still mad that she won class president when kurt deserved it so much more then she did. sorry for the mini rant lol

Amazing. Also yeah Kurt losing the election was literally for nothing and that was just one of many infuriating parts of s3 for me
But for real tho like the writers are the ones letting her get away with all kinds of shit that no one else can. Well I mean, Santana and Sue can. That’s about it. Honestly I think when Rachel makes a racist comment it’s kind of partly like “oh she shouldn’t have said that” even tho it’s still mostly played like a joke. Sue or Santana say something racist and it’s just part of them being sAvAgE like there’s no self awareness from anyone. And if Brittany says something racist it’s like “ohh that brittany. so cute and clueless wocka wocka” like it’s just a big joke
I mean like Blaine gets beaten up and it’s the most traumatic moment of his life but if Brittany beats up JBI then it’s played for laughs and the other characters are literally like “oh he deserves it” like ok let’s go double standards. I mean not that JBI is anything other than a punching bag in the first place but still 
Oh but to answer your original question that I almost forgot about bc i got so distracted by complaining about Brittany. She’s the worst but my other bottom character is Finn. And then there’s Will. He’s just so damn stupid and literally the worst teacher. And Sue. She has some funny moments and good scenes but her character got so stale after about s2 and she just got more and more cringe and it’s like why are you doing this to Jane Lynch what did she do to you. Also, the aforementioned racism. 
I don’t like Rory. He’s another black spot on s3. Didn’t like Ryder for that one episode where he was transphobic, but he got better. I actually don’t like Jesse that much, I don’t know why so many people do. Aaand I’m kind of starting to dislike Mike and Quinn lmao. Purely bc of the fandom. Like I’m so tired of “king” this and “queen” that and “least appreciated” “most overlooked” “most underrated” “deserved better” like people have talked so much about how underrated they are, that it makes me feel like they’re now overrated xD If that makes sense. But those are all minor in comparison to the Big Four listed above

aah i agree im vry disappointed in this chapter ! like its good like usual, but its kind of a let down after the last 5 chapters... ht rly exposed himself minutes before, and comedy aside, MGS answered him by ignoring him, and then saying "were not friends, were not as close as you think we are". it must have been hurtful for HT, its basically a rejection of recognizing HT vulnerabilities. and its totally In character for MGS to say this, so im not disappointed by it 1/?
i mean HT lay his heart down for Mo to see and theyve known each other for 15 DAYS, its too soon for anybody and especially for Mo who have mistrust problems to respond in the same way ? so running away and deflecting the declaration is cool, i wasnt excepting a "ill never abandon u!!" lol. but then HT being cool with this rejection and having a slapstick comedy just after doesnt feel right. mb show HT swallowing and being disheartened, and then put his usual facade and only then have comedy 2/?
would have been good, bc we would have known "oh ht is actually hurt by MGS reaction but doesnt know how to say it, so he plays it cool and change the subject bc hes still not at ease with being vulnerable". a realistic situation would have been "ht tried to be vulnerable but it was too soon, too much for mo who rejected him, so it confirmed ht biased thinking that showing vulnerabilities is bad and it will prevent ht to be vulnerable in front of someone in the near future". 3/?
i mean it could have been a nice although sad conclusion for this mini-arc, especially since ht have been grieving (?) his mother just this morning. a little step back, and then smth else happen and cause ht to crack completely but then mo is able to respond present and its a step forward. ok im daydreaming but that would have been climatic lol. instead this..ah i dont know i feel cheated, i know its ox' work but still haha ! like when they do an abrupt change of scene after an emotional page 4/
its a trick ox use often and after 300 chapters it feels old n cheap. when u engage in a emotional scene, u cant just do "oops i change my mind!!" and put slapstick comedy or ignore totally what just happened and dont have a progression. u have to stay on this road : u cant put traumatizing backgrounds and mafia affairs and mature problems (kidnapping, mother being threatening into prostitution,etc) n just.. not stick with it and making ur characters not traumatized by it and just 'lol comedy'.
sry im kind of monopolizing ur askbox lol, i guess im kind of frustrated ! it just the last chapters were so good and it was a while since ox use this cheap trick of not going through an emotional scene that i kind of forgot how terrible they were at handling transition between drama and comedy. theyre a good artist all in all (or i wouldnt be this disappointed!!), but they have this failing in their writing an it drives me nuts each time lmao. haa i hope next chapter will be better...5/5
Hell yeah, DEFINITELY, that sums up my thoughts. Also, you don't have to apologize, it was an interesting read and I can tell that you feel strongly about it. While I can’t say that I’m flat-out disappointed, as I wrote in my original post, I’m definitely feeling lukewarm and indifferent about the recent ch.
OX touched upon a few serious matters a couple of chapters before: namely She Li’s fucked up goading and the way it unsettled He Tian -- unsettled in no joking manner as follows from his reaction. Then we get He Tian swearing to beat up anyone who dares bully Mo, and the whole profound monologue from the previous chapter. Just as you say, He Tian truly laid himself bare there. One could argue that He Tian listed the reasons he was enamoured with Mo, or one could argue that he subtly commented on the milieu he grew up in, or one can even read it as He Tian admitting/reflecting on his flaws out loud. There are many ways to construe this scene, each of them is extremely meaningful. Not to mention it took HT visible effort to say these things out loud.
The problem which both you and I noticed is that OX left this mini-arc/mini-subplot unresolved. Instead, they abruptly switched to comedic relief. Much like you, I wasn’t expecting a big reaction from Mo -- no grand verbal declarations at very least. What I expected was a panel (maybe a close up of Mo’s face as I mentioned in my original post) that indicated he actually HEARD what HT told him, that it gave Mo some food for thought.

As you mention, Mo getting disconcerted and doing the tsun-tsun escape is fairly in character for him. Still, a panel like this would have been very welcome to emphasize his confusion and to justify him not gracing the other boy with an answer, ignoring HT showing his underbelly (which is something that doesn't come easy for him, as we readers know). Okay, sure, OX handled it differently this chapter -- we get Mo silently running away and blurting out the first comeback he could think of. No problem. It works to show that HT’s words had an effect on him, albeit it’s much less pronounced, than, say, the Aquarium scene -- again one would have to wonder why: HT’s “don’t abandon me” is just as strong, if not stronger, than “I’m afraid you’ll forget me”, so it follows that Mo should have been just as affected.

The problem is the way an emotionally charged moment quickly fizzled out into comedy. As you said, Mo blurting out “we are not friends, we are not familiar enough, so I don’t care what you think (of me)!” SHOULD have hit HT harder. Just minutes before we had HT being genuinely disturbed by the idea of someone looking to intentionally hurt Mo, seeking physical comfort, being disquieted by the idea of getting abandoned and losing someone he likes, confessing that he admires the other boy -- yet when Mo utters yet another curt rejection of sorts, we are not shown HT’s reaction, which, logically, should have been there. 
And all of that emotional build-up is cheapened by an accidental dick slap comedy. 
Indeed, showing HT being hurt (disquieted? deflated?) and then putting on a cool guy mask, and ONLY then switching to a slapstick humour would have been more appropriate. It wouldn’t have taken a big or an overly dramatic scene either -- just, IDK, show HT’s eyes widening, or his throat clicking, or his posture slumping, anything to indicate that Mo’s words affected him -- that the whole thing mattered to him. Otherwise, it leaves a bad taste in one’s mouth: “so Imma confess to the person I like and swear to protect them and beg them to put up with me -- oh! forget anything serious that I said, Imma touch some dick now”. While I don't have an issue with comedy coming into focus again, I do wish it hadn't been this abrupt. Had there been a better transition between these scenes, there wouldn't be this "lol jk" vibe that I’m getting.
So yeah, I, too, feel a little cheated. OX certainly has an issue with drama-comedy transitions, which are sort of hit-and-miss for me. Sometimes they work well to alleviate the grave mood, other times they appear to be out of place. The recent chapter is the latter case. Dangling a possibility of climatic resolution for the subplot and then intentionally subverting it just doesn’t work in favour of the plot here. It cheapened the emotional part and made the comedy feel much less fun for me. Of course, no one says that writing is an easy task. Plenty of mangakas, for instance, work with writers to strengthen their script and plots, so it’s challenging when a single person is responsible for both drawing and planning the story. OX is undoubtedly doing a tremendous job. Still, I wish they wouldn’t stick to using the old trick this monastically because it's becoming a trite writing device and works against them on occasion. It’s totally fine to keep the comic light-hearted yet it’s not good to ignore the needed dramatic development.

HOW DO YOU USUALLY PLOT WITH OTHERS, DO YOU GIVE INPUT OR LEAVE MOST WORK TOWARDS YOUR PARTNER?:  i try to map out some basic info abt their characters that i otherwise don’t know from their bio or verses and try to pick out points of confrontation or similarities to expand on with giselle that can be used as points for like a starter to happen. its either that or sometimes i have really stupid ideas i just toss out there like ‘LMAO THEYRE BREAKING SHIT AT DISNEYLAND’ and go buck wild from there if the other person is down. i also always try to warn people or get a gauge for what subjects to avoid and steer clear of considering that giselle is a bit of a Freak(tm) and will say and do bad things.

WISHLIST, BE IT PLOTS OR SCENARIOS:  OH SO MANY! ive managed to fulfil a lot of my wishlist threads with like, giselle talking to characters she’s already zombified and i love all that angst but i want to do more stupid shit. i want to make it my personal goal to bully every quincy man and woman on sight. although a REAL dream would be if i got to write a thread zombifying a character who managed to escape giselle’s clutches. and more fighting! i want to get better at describing action and fights and i love to write giselle getting beat up and beating people up! more more more!! 
THEMES I WON’T EVER RP / EXPLORE:   hohoho theres a LOT... uh r*pe/dubcon threads for one, even if yeah i know writing it doesnt condone it, it makes me intensely uncomfortable to put my muse in that scenario, i feel like i have an obligation to like, protect her from that shit you know? racism is one i don’t want to transgress, even though i’m a poc, its not really cathartic or groundbreaking to write abt racism in threads its just... really fucking upsetting. also i know the quincy’s have this very close parallel to the whole n*zi imagery and ideology thing going on and i am not about to start even daring to thread that into my writing or bring those allusions and references of real life tragedies into giselle’s threads. i’ve already talked at length abt exploring giselles trans identity in rp and why im not comfortable doing so, so.... yeah! all those i guess.
WHAT TYPE OF STARTERS DO YOU PREFER / DISLIKE, CAN’T WORK WITH?: i like starters where giselle can just immediately get right into being a piece of shit. mise en scene and all that! cut out the build up and just get to the intense horror !! i don’t like starters where its not immediately clear where the characters are standing and what they’re doing and what’s happening around them. those really disorientate me and leave me kinda floundering because i always need some allusion or mention of a setting to ground giselle in a time and place other wise i cant tell what her response should be

I want to first say this would not happen and this peice of writing is for shits and giggles and NOT CANON but if it DID HAPPEN, it would happen before Luke asked Birdie to marry him. so we’re talking like 1 or 2 months after Limerence (Harry/Olivia) (side note this ended up being 1.5k)
it would happen while they’re all drunk as fuck
Cashy is getting to handsy and Michael jokes “group orgy” but then yes?
Dove would be sober and be like nuh uh I am not about to join an orgy, “have fun with your hand Michael and try not to make me up when you get home.” cuz she knows the couples are not about to let Michael join in
she legit gives him PERMISSION to fuck anyone in the orgy he can, because she KNOWS he wont be able to even touch Birdie, let alone Puppy who will have Calum AND Ashton
they get there and Michael goes for Puppy but Calum shoves him away

Michael is a pro with his fingers from gaming, so that and his mouth have Puppy going wild and everyone looks, even Luke and Birdie stop to look cuz wtf. and Puppy has a death grip on the sheets and his hair, and Calum is pissed because he’s supposed to be the king, and suddenly Puppy is making sounds like that. and she’s trying NOT to be loud, and to hold it in for her boys, but JESUS. 
“Michael. hey. Michael. how are you doing that?” Ashton wants DETAILS.
as she cums she screams Michael’s name, and finally Calum goes to pull Michael away because what the fuck, but Ashton is like “no, let him teach us” cuz he is fucking intrigued. 
even Luke is listening to the instructions now, and Michael is just teaching these guys how to finger bang.
Calum kind of turns around to Luke and Birdie and is like fuck Michael, let me join you guys, and Luke is like no fucking way.

Ashton wants so many lessons, and Cal is pissed so he straight up puts his pants on and goes and sits in a chair but he still watches with his arms over his chest.
Puppy tries to beckon him over again, and Calum is being a big baby and is insisting everythings fine even though its not. 
Michael makes Puppy squirt again and Calum straight up goes outside for a smoke. 
Puppy insists on going out to talk to him, and ends up blowing him on the terrace, and he agrees to come back in for another round but makes her promise NO MICHAEL THIS TIME. 
Birdie is low key kind of salty not to get to try Michael’s magic fingers. 
they all wake up the next day and Cashy gets the fuck out before the others wake up
Luke and Birdie and Michael wake up, and Michael super awkwardly leaves without saying anything.
Birdie calls Olivia in a panic and thats how they find out. 
Harry would be pissed

Calum and Birdie didnt really even interact so they’re chill, but Ashton looked at Birdie a few times and even tried to touch her “but you let calum-” “Ashton take your hand away before i cut it off.” Birdie mouthing “im sorry”

Dove is pissed Michael fucked Puppy, because they dont really like each other so she yells at Luke because “why wouldnt you let him fuck Birdie? now he’s fucked Puppy, Luke! bruh i thought i could trust my murder bro.”

Birdie and Puppy talking about it and Puppy is ranting about how amazing Michael is but Birdie’s kind of like “but CALUM, Puppy.”
and Puppy’s like “bitch dont remind me that you’ve had Calum.”
“was he really that much better?” Puppy just stares at her. 
all the guys are super mad at Michael, even Luke, and Michael didn’t even TOUCH Birdie. but Luke KNOWS Birdie is curious about it. 
Dove gets super territorial and turns into such a GIRL because bitch thats HER man and she KNOWS how good he is, and now that Puppy knows too, she is BIG MAD. like all of the sudden Dove is super clingy, fucking Michael in the Luxury while Puppy is working. 
when they exit the bathroom Puppy and Michael make eye contact before Dove drags him away and Calum sees it and gets PISSED. 
so that night Calum has Puppy are at home and Calum calls Michael and makes him give him instructions via phone call on how to make Puppy squirt while he fucks her. and Michael is on speaker phone and oooof. 
he’s still not as good but he’s determined to be better so he starts going over to Dove and Michael’s place to play video games for ‘finger working out’. soon all the guys are there doing it and getting sex lessons from Michael, and they have an entire group chat about what works and what doesnt, with Michael as like the master of it all. 
Luke is hella practicing too but is low key about it and makes Birdie squirt before Calum has made Puppy squirt and Calum is PISSED.
Ashton makes Puppy squirt before Calum does too, and Harry comes in with a joke like :”guess it’s my turn now eh?” and Calum almost DECKS him. 
Harry low key behind the scenes doens’t even try to make Olivia squirt and she’s like “babe i wanna tho” and he’s like “not until Calum makes it happen with Puppy love, after that i’ll do it i promise.” 
Olivia is getting so pissed and sexually frustrated because Calum is taking FOREVER. So Olivia goes to Calum and is like, “bruh, i know for a FACT Puppy likes having her boobs touched so just touch them while you do the other stuff and it will WORK!” like she’s had all the girl talk so she knows exactly what Puppy likes and writes a whole fucking instruction manual for Calum.
he finally makes Puppy squirt after following Olivia’s advice and he calls Olivia after to tell her and they both freak out. she runs to Harry like MY TURN and he makes her squirt in a matter of seconds. He’s the one who taught Michael how to do it back in the day when they were whore bros and Olivia is shook. and he’s like don’t tell anyone it would wreck Cal.
but Olivia tells Birdie who accidentally lets it slip to Luke, who rubs it in Calum’s face after he catches Cal looking at Birdie one day and gets jealous and Cal is MAD. 
all in all, group orgy was not a good idea for Calum

im new to shokugeki and i dont care about spoilers, why is it bad?
a no joke answer bc u deserve this:
tl;dr Shokugeki sucks because it lost its direction halfway through the story, and when Tsukada (the author) realised that he’d bitten off more than he could chew with such a huge cast of characters.
long answer:
here’s the thing. Shokugeki started out good. 
it mostly played off the usual shounen tropes: a challenger would appear, but then they quickly joined the friendship circle, rinse and repeat. but with such a wide cast of characters with differing goals and personalities plus the high stakes of only the top 10% graduating, it made it easy to bank on the character interactions and friendships, which is what the first half of Shokugeki did, heavily so. and it worked ! 
it was a simple set up (protag aims to beat his dad in a cook off, goes to cooking school, meets friends and foes ! a tournament arc ! fun and shenanigans ! yay!), but Shokugeki did it good. it didn’t subvert any expectations, just did according to what it set out to do. nothing felt exaggerated beyond the typical manga stuff, and everything achieved was earned with hard work. with the occasional fluff and friends thrown in, it became a comfy mix for a good shounen manga.
if anything, id say that half the success came from the character’s relationships themselves - the plot wasn’t anything special, but the genuinity that the characters and their friendships and goals (shared or not) were treated with were wholesome and fun.
which is why it was so fucking jarring when it derailed by throwing aside half of its cast and completely stagnating all character development for the remaining half.
(insert infamous Central Arc expulsion joke here)
if you’ve started/are intending to start, id say its the most obvious after the Moon Banquet Festival Arc/beginning of Central Arc. the writing started getting sloppy, as did the handling of the characters. ive mentioned this before, and ill stress this again: i honestly believe that Central Arc is when Tsukada realised what a big miss steak he did in creating such a huge cast, and in the face of Shokugeki’s then success, made some poor authorial choices to keep the hype going (both plot and character wise).
for characters: half the cast was rid of via expulsion, including very competent chefs (which had no proper in canon explanation on how the fuck that happened) who happened to be fan favourites. i mean, Hayama Akira ? fuck, Nakiri Alice, anyone ? plus any poor remaining characters got shafted in lieu of Souma, hard. this became more prominent as the Arcs slowly go on, the ones of which took the worst brunt of it being Takumi and Megumi.
(what do u think is worse. your fav never getting a cameo or your fav being part of the forefront team but constantly getting fucked over because Souma didn’t get the spotlight of the chapter yet. vote now in the replies.)
for plot: higher and higher stakes were introduced that again, just didn’t make sense !! in Central Arc, Souma was expected to win against Eishi, the best chef in his entire school. when two arcs prior he just lost a cooking contest to two of his peers (placed third), and one arc prior struggled to beat Kuga in ticket sales (even then he didn’t win because his cooking was better, so. wasnt even a win on the cooking front). there was no build up ! NOT EVEN A TRAINING ARC. he just went straight from the bottom rung of the ladder to the fucking ceiling. super different from the first half of the series when everything would be shown in careful detail (best example i can think of off the top of my head being the Shokugeki against Mimasaka in the Autumn Election Arc).
also: in the midst of introducing Erina’s character arc and backstory, Tsukada seemed to completely forget (or maybe just didnt know how to link back?) that he’d already established an overarching plotline: Souma’s quest to best Jouichirou. so when Souma began overthrowing these foes that are his seniors said to be leagues ahead of him, the suspension of disbelief was stretching waaay thin. but hey ! its a shounen manga ! we can forgive this much (sarcasm). 
then Tsukada introduces Asahi. mother fucking Asahi. who is basically introduced by beating Jouichirou without breaking a sweat, but oh boy did he break the suspension of disbelief right then and there and completely toss the plot into the fucking fire. because there’s no end goal anymore ! the one thing that our main character has been working so hard for ? non existent. pointless. this no name (at that time) character has done it, pack your bags boys, let’s go home.
(might i note that at this point, Shokugeki was also uuhh nothing like the slice of life comedy it originally was. it became an action-psychological mix that just…doesnt work. and i mean. of course it wouldn’t. there was no foreshadowing, the villians can’t be taken seriously because 1) theyre also teenagers for fuck’s sake 2) Azami’s just a creep, plain and simple. he has no depth. no one cares about an antagonist who’s bad at just being bad.
the themes it began with was completely set aside for really badly written character backstories and angsty edgey bs that i still don’t understand why Tsukada thought would work in retaining hype. especially when considering how pure the premise was.
i honestly also think that its the Blue Arc + Dark Chefs Arc when Tsukada actually realised that his plot had gone haywire, since volume sales were dropping hard and fans clearly hated the direction the series had gone in. but instead of trying to reign it back in, he decided to just let it run buckwild because he just didn’t know how to fix it.)
to rub salt into the wound: so many promised resolutions are shoved into the background, done offscreen, or worse yet, forgotten ! scenes that fans have literally been waiting for. Souma VS Erina Shokugeki. Souma VS Takumi Shokugeki. Nakiri Alice coming back to the series and actually fucking cooking again.
(im sure that there’s more that lead to its downfall but like. shrugs. this is mainly to me why it sucks: it had A Lot going for it (im not ashamed to admit that at one point i actually genuinely believed it could be one of the next Big 3 on Shounen Jump), and it just didnt live up to any of it for no other reason other than Tsukada mixing elements of a story that didn’t work well together, tried to force them to work, and did nothing to fix it when it didn’t.)
so our plot is gone. so are our lovable characters. so is the slice of life comedy that drew most people in in the first place. the potential that it had is now dust. what does Shokugeki have left that makes it unique, that makes people love it ? here’s the answer !
nothing. 
that fact kicks you in the teeth every fucking time you remember how good the first half of the series was. 
then that fact dropkicks you when you realise that Shokugeki no Soma literally started on a 90degree drop into a dumpster fire when the series was at the apex of its popularity and plot buildup.
that’s why it sucks.

Gladdest (Soulmate AU)
For this, I’ll be using the soulmate AU where what happens to your soulmate’s body happens to you. I’m not sure who originally came up with this. Basically, how it works, is like, if your soulmate gets punched in the face, you feel like you’ve been punched in the face. If your soulmate dies, you don’t die, but you feel it. Same with broken bones, you’ll feel it, but your arm won’t actually be broken. But not just pain, other stuff. Like if your soulmate cries, you’ll feel it, but you don’t cry unless they’re super heartbroken, or if they get a really good hug you feel it, too. In my version of this AU, the pain and other feeling doesn’t start until you turn sixteen. Imagine how fucked up it would be if that wasn’t the case and you had a partner older than you? Like, while 13-year old Bill gets in a fight, his soulmate, who is only 3, feels the same punches and kicks. It’d be so fucked up.
warnings: nsfw (but no actual sex, just a lot of talking about it [and masturbation] and some sexually tense scenes), the reader nearly has a panic attack (again, i know, sorry. what can I say? I project), & reader has a thing for.... erotic asphyxiation. let me know if i missed anything.

You’d been sixteen for a little while now, and there hadn’t been much contact from your soulmate aside from the occasional feel of a phone falling on your face and smacking it.
It’s the beginning of a new school year at Xavier’s, and you’re pretty thrilled. Your roommate this year is your best friend, Ellie. Okay, not just your best friend, she’s your crush, too. Do I really have to say, at this point?
“Hey,” she greets you, sounding rather sullen as she enters your dorm, where you sit on the edge of your bed.
“What’s up?” you ask.
“I turned sixteen over the summer and I haven’t felt anything to give me a hint. All my soulmate does is cry.”
“All my soulmate does is drop their phone on their face,” you offer a complaint in return, and the two of you lock eyes for a moment, one of realization.
“No,” Ellie says. “No.” She’s bright red, immediately thinking of just how many hot summer nights she was kept up, orgasm after orgasm after orgasm, gasping for breath at the way her soulmate’s fingers curled just right, just fucking right. There’s no way you, her crush and her best friend, were that good.
“No, can’t be,” you agree.
“Could be,” she reminds you.
“It’d make sense,” you admit.
“I hate everyone else but you.”
“We could try to find out,” you suggest.
She pinches herself.
“Ow! Not like that!” You whine, clutching at your arm. “Oh, well, I guess it’s too late th-” Ellie cuts you off with her eyes alone.
“Where does all that energy come from, Y/N?! What are you, the Energizer bunny?! At least three times a night, every night! What the hell?!”
You blush deeply, scratching the back of your neck. You hadn’t exactly expected you’d meet your soulmate anytime soon, or that they’d be bold enough to comment on your habits.
“I dunno, I thought it was normal for kids our age…” you mumble.
“Oh, yeah, well some people like sleeping and not screaming into the pillow because their soulmate has a little too much fun doing the five finger shuffle!”
“Please, louder. I think a few people in Antarctica didn’t hear you,” you retort, looking up at her from where you were sitting with a challenging expression.
“We’ve been friends for all this time and I never knew what a horny bastard you are,” she remarks.
“Well, I’m not the one who was ‘screaming’ in pleasure,” you mutter.
“I heard that!” she says, her expression still adorably indignant.
“If you hated it so much, you should’ve just got those over the counter meds, Antifel or whatever.”
“I- I…” She sighs. “Yeah, I didn’t hate it that much,” she admits, and you smile a bit. “But I wasn’t a fan of the choking,” she adds, gesturing at your scarf, your favorite one that she never would’ve guessed hides the bruises from where you’ve choked yourself with a belt, at least not before. “I’m more of a choker than a ‘chokee’, but, I guess that’d be obvious, wouldn’t it? Considering we’re soulmates and all.”
You nod, your eyes now on your lap, the floor, her tee shirt, the lamp in the corner, anything that isn’t her eyes, and she smirks.
“Oh, so now you’re shy?”
“A little,” you quietly reply, and she sits next to you on your bed.
“Let’s cool down,” she offers. “We’ve just seen each other after months of purely texting and the occasional phone call.”
“Thanks,” you respond, finding it easier to breathe.
“Why were you crying so much?” Ellie asks, addressing her original observation.
“Just depressed and lonely and stuff. I don’t have friends in my hometown, not like you.”
“You’ll always have me,” she says. “I mean it.”
“I’d hope so, soulmate,” you laugh off the seriousness of the conversation, and she sighs, looking to your eyes with her own soulful ones.
“I’m glad it’s you,” she tells you.  “I don’t think I’d be able to stand anyone else.”
“Yeah, right!” you huff out a laugh, confused at her sudden emotional openness. Sure, she was more honest about her feelings with you than anyone else, but that didn’t mean that she was a completely open book. Who was?
“You’re not disappointed, are you?” Ellie wonders because of your remark.
“God, no! I- I actually have a really big crush on you,” you admit.
“Yeah?” she asks, the cutest little grin on her face, you know the one. “I have a crush on you, too.”
You blush again.
“Sorry… I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable, I’m not very good at flirting or anything like that. I don’t really care about much of anyone at all, and you’re definitely the only person I’ve really cared about in a romantic way, so…”
“No, it’s not that! I- You- You being really good at flirting is what’s got me like this. And the fact that I’m a dork who’s really bad at flirting contributes,” you explain.
“I am? Good at flirting, I mean.”
“Well, with me, at least,” you tell her.
“Um… Sorry if it’s lame to ask, but… Can I kiss you?”
“Of course! And it’s not lame to ask at all, El, I appreciate it actua- Mmf!”
You could live forever in the feeling of her lips on yours, her hands oh-so carefully holding your cheeks.
“Sorry,” she shyly says, as she slowly pulls away from you, looking in your eyes. “I’ve just been wanting to do that for a really, really long time. Pretty much since we met, actually.”
“R-really?” you ask, a bit breathless and definitely still flustered.
“Yeah, you’re perfect. In, like, every way. It’s the worst and the best.”
“I’m perfect?! But you’re- You’re you!” you argue, and she shakes her head, rolling her eyes. “I’m so lucky.”
“No, I’m the lucky one,” she disagrees.
“We can both be lucky,” you tell her, and she sighs.
“I suppose that’s a good compromise,” she decides. “So, what should we do before dinner? We’ve got a couple hours to kill, but I don’t think either of us has much more to say that wouldn’t be repetitive or… Something.” She blushes again, cheeks bright pink.
You blush back, reminded that she knew all about you and the things you did to yourself behind doors. “R-right,” you reply. Hey, you may be a horny motherfucker, but that doesn’t make you any less of a bottom.
“Can I see?” she asks, touching at your scarf. You nod, and she unwraps the scarf. She carefully touches the spotted bruises with her fingers. “With the belt you’re wearing?”
You can’t even speak. You nod, and the ghost of a smile graces her face before she just barely presses her lips to the bruises closest to her, on the side of your neck. Your hand quickly grabs her bicep tightly, and she stops, looking to you with concern.
“I’m so sorry, I got a bit carried aw-”
“No, no, it’s good, I’m just… Sensitive there,” you admit, and one of the biggest smiles you’ve seen her wear is on her lips.
“Yeah?” she asks, taking her crossbody bag off of her shoulder and opening it. She takes out a bottle of Antifel pills. “How sensitive?”
“Oh God, um… I- Um…” Your nerves are really getting to you, and your breathing gets heavier as you stare at the bottle. This is really happening. It’s really happening. You’d always wanted to, especially with her, but now that it’s a reality, you feel on the brink.
Ellie can recognize that look in your eyes, and it’s a look she’d hoped she’d never be the cause of.
“Shit, Y/N. What’s going on? Talk to me.”
“I- Um, I just- I want to? But I- I just- I don’t know, it’s just getting really hard to breathe, and uh, not in a hot way,” you joke nervously.
“Hey, you can want to and not be ready to right this minute. We haven’t even been on a date yet, okay? I’m really sorry if I made you feel like you had to do anything you didn’t want to,” Ellie tells you, and she feels immensely guilty either way.
“No! I liked you kissing me, especially where you did, but, you’re right. We should probably adjust to the news and put a label on whatever this is before we do anything too serious.”
Ellie nods. “You always were the more logical one. I’ll put these in the medicine cabinet and we can just… Talk about stuff, like we always do.”
“But with more kissing and cuddling, I hope?” you request, and she nods, going to put the bottle away before returning to find you bundled up in her comforter. “It’s so cozy…” you practically sing, at least to her.
“This is a dream,” she sighs happily, slipping off her shoes and joining you in her bed. You spoon her side, and she hums in content, stroking your hair.
“You’re in a good mood,” you comment. Ellie is not a very cheerful person, at least not openly. So, to see her like this was surprising.
“Yeah, of course I am. It’s you. It’s really you. I’ve never been happier in my life,” she says, having really been hit with the fact that you’re her soulmate. All hers. “All mine…” she hums.
“You really know how to make a girl feel special… I mean it. I’m really not all that.”
“Please be my girlfriend,” she requests.
“Only if you’ll be mine,” you reply, and she scoffs.
“I think that’s how that works, babe.”
Your heart skips a beat and you stare at her in wonder.
“Sorry for not asking if pet names were okay…It’s just something I like, it’s really stupid.”
“No, I really like it, hence the dumb stare and the lack of breathing.”
She chuckles, holding you tighter. You smile with her, glad that she’s happy.
“I hope you don’t feel like you have to over-exaggerate how happy you are. It’s okay if you’re not ridiculously happy about finding your soulmate.”
“Oh, no, I’m as happy as I sound. I’m, uh, definitely a textbook case of Lesbian That’s A Grumpy Bitch Til She Gets A Girlfriend. But then again, I’ll probably just be a significantly less grumpy bitch to everyone but you, sorry.”
“I don’t mind, I like you being your bitchy self,” you reply, being rewarded with a kiss placed atop your head that sends tingles dancing down your body. “Mm… I like that.”
“Good,” Ellie responds. “I’m glad.”
“I’m gladder,” you tease.

it’s a comedy, mostly? it has elements of backstory transphobia and  stuff like that but that’s not really the story i want to tell with it, so  i don’t go too deeply into it in the main fic. it’s mostly comedy and Self Care: The  Story (once these nerds get around to acknowledging that self care is  good, anyway!!!!)  
Eva is 20, nb lesbian (though she doesnt know half of it to begin with). generally a bitchard at the beginning but also deeply craving that Validation. Invested in making the fic harder to write due to pronoun shenanigans (shoutout to the lengthy section of intimate emotional scenes that uses no pronouns at all for eva but is narrated by them in 3rd person)
Natsuhi is like 21 i guess because im a sucker for her having like an annoying 1-3 years on eva bc eva would get mad about it. USHIROMIYA GOLD dishes up that yellow metal like you wouldn’t believe. led by kinzo whos so fuckin good at sniffing out that sweet sweet gold people are half convinced the man has psychic powers. Any piece of land he’s got his eyes on, he WILL get his hands on, no matter who owns it right now.
the land kinzo wants At The Moment is owned by the AKIKAZE FAMILY who have been notably on the decline recently. they’re in the economic shithole so this land is basically all they’ve got right now, so when kinzo wants it and it suddenly Has Value, they’re like “oh, shit,
anyway the deal basically shakes out that like, he gets the land and all the gold that may or may not be in it. he offers his eldest son in exchange for this land, to marry their daughter: in the bonds of marriage graciously ensuring a part of the winnings will spill over on them, while keeping them under his control without money coming into the picture.
Everything’s working out great and coming up kinzo. the deal is closed and everyone’s happy (i guess). until ONE DAY, just a few narrow weeks before the akikaze girl is set to move in with the ushiromiyas,

Krauss dislikes being told what to do, and his father’s ideals never lined up with his own. He thinks this entire thing is sort of fucked up and can’t live under his dad’s thumb anymore. That's why, immediately following Kinzo’s agreement with the Akikaze family, Krauss disappears. He’s just kinda left for greener pastures, to unfold his own life and pursue his own interests independent of the Ushiromiya name. He leaves behind a letter explaining it & basically he forfeits both name and inheritance, and Kinzo’s incredible deal is suddenly in jeopardy.....
obviously this is kinzo though, and all of his solutions are like, 20 times more complicated than they have to be? he’s DETERMINED to have this land so he’s like “i need an eldest son. shit rudolf is only like 9. fuck. well okay i have an eldest daughter with a deeply complicated need for validation and success entirely driven by her overall neglect at my hands“ and the rest. as they say. is history (???)
Ushiromiya Eva always saw Krauss as unworthy of the inheritance, and to her, his disappearance confirms this. She grew up always being made to feel inferior to her older brother, usually being ignored in favor of him, and it's bred a complex need for validation in her. Her values and strengths are more like Kinzo’s than her brother’s, and Kinzo recognizes this in the wake of Krauss’ disappearance.
basically he concocts this really wild scheme where eva has to pretend to be his oldest son and marry this girl or whatever so he can seal this stupid gold deal and she’s like “well lol if i get to be family heir” and hes like “yes that’s what im saying” and shes like “awesome let’s do it”
all of the servants are in on it too of course. specifically kinzo enlists SAYO who works there as normal staff and isn’t otherwise tangled into this family’s mess in any way whatsoever. she’s just here to serve tea and looks. anyway he’s like “you work on this with eva--i mean evan, my son, you must have misheard--and eva you have to listen to whatever yasuda says” and eva is like “that last part will not be frustrating for me at all”.

Yasuda as reigning Household Gender Presentation Expert is like “i think i just got orders from the master to bully eva?” and eva is like “i wish i could fire you but my dad just banned me from doing that” and then gradually...over the course of the project......they become....friends.........
(the au is tagged eva & sayo for a reason. they become FRIENDS!!)
mostly its just various combinations of shkanon dunking on eva and its all VERY good.
during all these shenanigans we make some startling realizations like “gender euphoria is a hell of a drug” and stuff, which is extremely harrowing for everyone (note: not for everyone. just for eva, who makes 10,000 realizations every day, and should not have been counted.)
(ok sidenote did anyone else put on their first binder & go like “hmmm. i live here now” because. mood. im projecting entirely into this fic)

so that’s kind of the energy we’re going for with these two.
(natsuhi’s line in the second cap was going to be removed for being Way Too Intense, but everyone i talked to said it was too hot to cut, so i decided to indulge us all. blame the lesbians)
they IMMEDIATELY don’t get along but they kinda agree to like, mind their business, since neither of them are interested in playing house here. if they can get the wedding to go off without a hitch they can basically go back to never talking to each other again.
natsuhi’s entire angle here is essentially: her family was not that good, and this family likely won’t be better, BUT here she has a chance to build something new for herself. she’ll be out of her parents’ house. She needs this deal to stay for her own sake, but she has to get out ahead of her husband and set up a dynamic that favors her. when she meets evan she essentially gauges the kind of person she’s dealing with and picks her approach accordingly: this is not a soft man, and she has to be hard in turn to avoid being steamrolled.
and its VERY hot
anyway some stuff happens and it eventually they both sorta get each other’s secrets. eva is not the firstborn son and natsuhi is not the card kinzo thought he was pulling from her family’s hand and theyre both toast if word hits the public. directly after the wedding they establish a tense alliance of keeping each others’ secrets....
and then they.....fall...in l
there’s some fun tensions and realizations. eva is like “so im quickly catching on that no praise i ever received from dad was on my own merit and he’s kind of a dirtbag all around and his validation is kind of not worth it” and nat is like “word our parents are chains” & they run kinzo over with the down w cis bus. it’s fine. they get postcards from krauss sometimes. he has a motorbike now.

Eden’s Zero Chapter 1 Review
Hey guys, now before I dive into this already longer than usual review, I did wanna take this time to mention something. Its been no secret that I turned on Mashima and FT pretty hardly after the end of FT and some of you may be aware that I was moderately active in the fanbase with putting out my reviews and such. That said some may liken that shift in mentality to me not liking how the story went and a common critique of fans is that when what they’re fans of doesn’t gel with what they want they wanna destroy it. As if the fan has ownership of the source of the fanaticism.
I admit there are times that I’ve question decisions on Hiro Mashima’s end and has posted rewrites, but that’s not me doing it out of a sense of ownership. I’m doing it because I have a standard. Being a fan of something and letting your disappointment get to you and fester into salty, bitchy purest is one thing, but being a person who’s judging what a series puts out and actually caring about the quality of what’s in the popular media is important. FT got negative reviews in its latter half because it was that bad. By the end of the series it was legit that bad. Now I don’t say that is someone who was in the fanbase and hated Hiro’s decisions cause they weren’t mine, I hated them because it was bad writing. I’m a reader with standards, as are all of you, and in the digestion of media we make distinctions between good and bad. I make this claim with more concrete surety now that I’ve been around longer and have reviewed more series than just FT, I think it be harder to believe if I made this case when I was just starting and all I was talking about at the time was FT.
Some of you might remember when I first started out on MHA, my second chapter I ever reviewed I had found it boring and mundane and to date its my least popular MHA review and I still stand by that assertion. I hold everything to the same standard, and that includes FT. The reason I write this is that while throughout this review I will mention comparison’s to FT’s first chapter (and yes, even ways Eden’s Zero improved on it), but I will be holding it to the same standard. So this entire review won’t be me holding a grudge against Hiro, but it will be me holding it to the same standard as I do everything I read. That out of the way lets dive in.

We open on a hill side and met our MC named Shiki. Beside him is the mecha demon from the cover page and what they see is a... dragon. Yeah, Hiro I thought you wanted this to be wholely original?

On the hand I actually like this scene in the sense robo demon here is actually encourging actual adventure (something FT lacked) and its kinda amazing listening to this demon looking guy talking about friendship, yet on the other hand, damnit Hiro. Is this the only thing how to write about? Like damn man.

We cut to the future where we see our main female Lucy-I mean Rebecca! Y’know I could make a Rebecca from One Piece joke, but she’s kinda already a bit of a decisivee figure so I’m not gonna bother.

I mean its okay. Its just castle theme park. Also Rebecca we find out is apparently a youtuber. Look if DBS can have GodTube then I can put up with Blue Cate (Aoneko) website. Also yeah Happy here, no sugar coating its just Happy. Also Rebecca here purposely made her skirt short. Just because you point out the sexualization in canon doesn’t make it better, ya still drew it, Hiro.

We see that the theme park is full of robots and each one acts as an assist in sending the guest through some kind of medieval simulator. And if anyone has seen Westworld you know where this is heading. To be fair I love worldbuilding so please, explore!

So we find out Rebecca’s dream is to have one million suscribers and now here’s where I gotta give props to Hiro because he actual made a dream for a character that doesn’t seem like it can be achieved a chapter from now. Granted this seems a bit hard to actually quantify, but this dream could potenially evolve into something of why she wants the suscribers and could be like Nami making the map of the world that getting video of unknown locations may actually be worth something to the general population.
We see that Rebecca chooses to go on a monster hunting quest and they encounter...

We get some scenes of Shiki here wanting to be friends with Rebecca cause she’s a human and Rebecca isn’t interested and she returns to the Granbell town where Shiki is there and the robots know who he is.

Shiki’s expressions and creepy advances really gives off this tinge of sci-fi horror, unfortunate Hiro doesn’t really go that route and we’ll get to it. Also that wizard looking robot from the color page is also here.
They then have a party where the robots all celebrate them having a costumer for the first time in so long they have a party being nice to Rebecca and lavishing her with stuff outside is robot that looks like Robin Hood and he reports to his boss this machine king.

We see Shiki trying to bond with Rebecca and it leads to him expressing he wants to leave the kingdom and see another country, but we also learn he’s in charge of fixing this and the robots are acting up lately. We find out that the one who was talking to Shiki and is his “Grandfather” was called the Demon King a robot designed for playing that role in the park.

Umm Rebecca... That’s being a dick. So you don’t like it, so you decide to cut it, cause it bothers you. You could’ve framed it like, “If he fixes you up then maybe he needs better vision” or “He’s been so nice to me, let me do something for him.” And what makes this worse s that Shiki is asleep, so she doesn’t even consult his feelings. Like seriously, that’s not being a good friend . But for contrivances sake I’m sure Shiki will wake up and love it, won’t he?

Y’know I said I’d give Hiro atleast two free fanservice moments for his first 3 chapters. He’s now used all of them up in a single chapter. Also Rebecca is tied to a stake while robots with torches surround her along with the machine king.

Shiki is also there and here’s something that did remind me of rave, the tightness of the first chapter. Everything seems to flow like one continuous story and doesn’t seem to do some dumb interlude like FTs first chapter did with that awkward moment where Lucy leaves Natsu and she’s just randomly in the park reading.

The King wants to use her ship to leave this world and we get som kind of motivation out of him.

Oh wow, for a first chapter villain that’s actually a really deep thing to unload. That as amusment park hosts they must’ve just been seen as pleasure tools and with no one around these robots who seem to be senstinent must’ve felt betrayed and...

Oooooor you cut out all moral ambiguity by just saying they have a virus. Sure. Trust me, this is where it gets stupid really stupid. And that’s the inconsistency.
So these robots I guess are like the ones from the Animatrix where they just kinda develop sentience out of nowhere. But unlike Animatrix it doesn’t seem to imply when they developed this sentience and that they began to think they were being abused.

Tired of Friendship already, it ain’t leaving.

So why do you hate humans? They abandoned you I guess, but there’s not other robot saying “hey our times were fun together” no everyone is like they left us to rot  so we hate them. Not like Humans did anything legitimate bad. We actually see that at the end of the chapter that there is some sort of central battery on the park that all robots are hooked up to. You could make their reason for hating humans that. That even though they left these sentiment robots still had a little kingdom to themselves, but realized that its all just going to end one day and humans didn’t even bother to unplug them. They’re existence is literally knowing when they’ll die, imagine that as why they harbor negative emotions and maybe Shiki actually fixing things might’ve actually been prolonging their lives so maybe that be why they kept him around. This whole sentience things just feels like Hiro wanted to do a trope of crazy robots and ended using multiple to fit the whatever story purpose at the moment.

You do run the planet, dumbasses. This entire plane, apparently for hundreds of years, has been solely controlled by you. Maye this should be rephrased as, going to the place that built you to get revenge or as I spoiled with the battery we’ll take the ship to get more power for our kingdom?
Shiki doesn’t do anything and kinda lets the robots just wail on him as he found out all things in his life were a lie. Then Rebecca gives a friendship speech. A stupid stupid friendship speech.

You’re right, Rebecca! Too bad we didn’t see that. I’m serious we barely see memories of Shiki with any robot outside of the demon king and Michael so there’s no weight to this conflict. We only get the vague sense they raised hm, but there’s no moments of Shiki really laughingg and enjoying their company outside of the party with Rebecca which rather is made more for getting Shiki to like Rebecca for this moment.

We see Shiki’s hand and apparently he has these marks indicating he has Ether gear. The power system of this series.

So they fight with shitty action scenes (If I can give Horikoshi a hard time for how he draws his fight choreography, then I sure as hell will give Hiro the once over.) Happy manages to save Rebecca and like Happy from early FT, he basically spots off exposition on powers.

So is it like a literal gear? Because Happy afterward destincties as the Gear of Gravity, so is it like a devil fruit? Is ether in all humans, but this specific gear brings it out in a certain way? If its internal then I guess its like the magic circuits from Fate? And then every of has their own unique variation like Nen? Like cause Happy gives it the distinction of Gravity it doesn’t seem like Shiki gives a reason why he has this power. I’m hoping \its like devil fruits, literal gears you implant and then it brings out your ether in a certain way.

Credit where credit is due, Hiro actually did build up the reveal of this power throughout the chapter and its actually really well done. Kinda reminds of something Oda would do with subtly building up a devil fruit power without revealing it. Like Crocodile drying out a flower but it isn’t stated his power is specifically sand.
They then flee when the other robots rally and Shiki takes Rebecca back to her ship.

This scene would actually be really nice if we actually saw more young shiki actually having fun with the machines and not a being a creeper with them.

It seems like worlds in this universe are basically like kingdom hearts worlds. They’re not real “worlds” so much as they are islands in space.

Well great place to end the chapter. Little dry of a first story, but I definetly see that has room for improvment and there is something-Wait this isn’t the last page? But what else is there to talk about. There’s nothing left-

Oh for fuck sake. That’s right they were trying to send SHiki away. Because apparently these robots thought there was no way to restore battery life even if stayed.
Here’s a tip, ifyou really care, and had such a close bond, maybe tell him to leave? Tell SHiki the truth that you guys are tied to a battery and instead of Shiki vowing to leave for the stars so he can make 100 friends (I’m not kiding that’s his actual goal here). Then this would be an interesting goal.
But no, you have to act like human hating jackasses and shatter the boy’s entire reality, just so you he would go out and “change the universe”

This would be a really nice scene with a very nice amount of character development starting point, if we actually saw their past. All we know is they raised Shiki, but its never really seemed like they’re loving or caring or Shiki openly gets upset if one of them had a problem. Again the biggest flaw with this chapter is that it sacrifices seeing one potentially interesting relationship (Shiki and the robots) for another one (Rebecca).

So we end on this page which reveals that Shiki’s goal is to have a hundred friends. Not going to say something snarky I just realized this is the same motivation as Yuki from future diary. Like before the crazy yandere shit.
Post Chapter follow up:
Lets be positive and look at the good stuff in this chapter. The first thing great about this chapter is it improved upon two of the biggest failings in the first chapter FT. Goals established and world building. Not only does this set up force Hiro Mashima to actually world build (literally) but each person in the first chapter has a goal that doesn’t seem like it can be accomplished quickly. It means we can have investment in the story.
Another thing I’ll give is Shiki is an okay MC. He has more personality than Natsu, but not as much as Haru and this first chapter is about him. Its easy to understand that Lucy is often considered the MC of FT because it literally focuses on her for the story than Natsu. But this chapter had a healthy balance.
Also the power system at least seems to have some definition. Unlike how anyone could have magic yet normal people just don’t choose to use it like in FT. Ether Gear seems to be a powersource that only a select few can use. Now we need to see first if there are ways of combating it like technology or such so a non ether gear person can still fight.
It also has its own unique aesthetic. Ft is a pretty generic fantasy world. It doesn’t have the bleakness of bereserk or the Japanese aesthetic of naruto. You could say Black CLover, Fairy Tail, and Seven Deadly sins all had their first chapter happen in the same world and I’d have trouble arguing it.
Now on to the crappy stuff. This series suffers from the usual Mashima foibles such as the sexual harassment, the stupidly way it tries to justify and give all conflict happy ending, not actually bothering to have a situation drawn out ad built up too, etc. I mean for the first conflict of the chapter its a heavy one, these guys raised SHiki yet their own mentality is against humans so Shiki has to choose, but instead of actually answering that question, it turns out there was no real conflict and the machines were just faking.
As for my like for Shiki, I flat hate Rebecca. She is so pointless and useless. Look I will defend Lucy and she actually can d things. First chapter she saved Natsu by using aquarius. But Rebecca? She’s just all of the bad traits of post timeskip Lucy. She is used for pointless fanservice, does nothing contribute, and becomes a mouth piece for friendship.
Speaking of friendship as a concept and goal here, Hiro just rewrite what you mean. Have deeper meaning than friends for once. There is ways you could take the motivation “I want to make 100 friends” in a compelling way. Prehaps Shiki is going out to make his own world where he can make a happy place for people where they can laugh and cry in harmony. Like story telling wise its pretty weak.
Like me personally, I would’ve taken the first chapter like this, the robots are sentinet and they are nice to Shiki and Rebecca and they have genuine fun together. They gradually reveal that they are shutting down maybe one starts acting wonky and tries to hide it and maybe the machine king is the real bad guy. He has sentinece and hates humans and he wants to eliminate SHiki and Rebecca and that’s because they’re shutting down. The other robots say they don’t care they were abandoned, they were mad at first but Shiki showed them that why they loved catering to humans. King and Shiki fight and they all reveal they’re shutting down and Shiki cries he doesn’t want them to go. The robots say its inevitable and they don’t hpw to recharge the battery and Shiki vows to leave the planet and search for a power source to bring them all back. Then that’s shiki’s goal and it even can cause questions like “Is it worth all this for machines?” or “who designed them maybe we can figure out the right substance to power them up?”
or if Hiro wanted to go a more darker route. Have the machines have no sentience and literally be dolls for the King who turns out to be a human who stayed here on Granbell and made his own little kingdom. Make it a bit meta on how Shiki’s only friends were just hollow imitations of people who were only friends because that’s what their programming dictated and they can all be switched off. It be meta as critiquing Ft and how all the guild characters basically had no conflicts, all got along, and were just friends with no depth or reason.
This all highlights the issue with Hiro Mashima and that’s he is not a good a writer. Hiro is an incredibly talented person and can come up with incredibly unique ideas and looks, which is why his cover pages are the best things he puts out because its him free forming. But writing. He has a limited scope on that and stuff like sci-fi and fantasy can be very morally grey things. But Hiro doesn’t seem to understand tragedy in the sense that its tragic because a person fails or dies unsatisfied. But he only seems to know how to write painfully obvious concepts like “save the world” or “friendship” instead doing a concept like “what it is to be a hero” like MHA does which can have a variety of answers to it.
So what’s the final verdict? Well I actually am going to do something different than usual. I’m going to say what I though the quality was compared to FT and then to what I’d consider this work compared to anything else.
In comparison to FT, Eden’s Zero gets a Final verdict of 8/10
Improves on a lot of FT’s first chapter flaws
Created a more unique environment for a story
And actually has a lot tighter narrative
But in comparison to everything else...
Final Verdict: 5/10
Even if it wasn’t Hiro, its a pretty generic start (some names aren’t even all that inspired like Machine King, Demon King)
Potential to grow into something better is there
Nothing is outright offensive

<Jo> “Oh come off, I’m not really trying.” *Jo snorts, covering her mouth with a hand before quirking an eyebrow upward* “I’m sure you would have as hard a time as I am in my position.”
<Anna> “Uh huh, right now you couldn’t bluff your way out of a game with a blind man.” *Anna chuckles watching Jo, amusing now at the snort.*
<Jo> *Jo shakes her head in embarrassment before laughing* “Yeah okay, shut up, it’d been a while okay?”
<Anna> “And just what position was you in that put you in that good a mood?” *Anna sits back crossing her arms over her chest watching Jo*
<Jo> “Lets say, I was a little shocked I could get out of bed on my own two feet. We bested our record of.. well, you know.” *Biting down on her lip and waggling an eyebrow, Jo smiles back at the other*
<Anna> *Anna can’t help but hate Jo right now a bit as she laughs.* “Well I’m glad someone got something around here. If I didn’t think it would just piss him off I would circle the bed in iron till Gray gets it through his head he isn’t going too break me.”
<Jo> “I’d offer to help beating that over his head, but I’m pretty sure my own mood and the fact he generally wants to kill me might make that a little hard” *Jo laughs along, reaching to rub at the back of her neck with one hand*
<Anna> “Yes because if he takes his sexual frustrations out on your ass..I am never getting laid again.” *Anna sits there still sulking some but enjoying Jo’s good mood.*
<Jo> “If anything, I think talking to me might make him more frustrated from the kind of no-kill warning .” *Shrugging a shoulder, Jo moves around to the other side of the bed, hopping into the furthest corner down near Anna’s feet* “I could always go hurry up that schoolgirl outfit for you. Claim that he should punish you for running off?”
<Anna> *Anna can’t help but turn red but it might get Gray motivated.* “Yes you should, because if that doesn’t get him then I’m doomed."And then I can blame it all one you when he gets over it.” *Anna sits up shaking her head at Jo.* “Because you’re such a bad influence on me. Coming over and telling me of your sexual conquest.”
<Jo> “You’re going to blame me for your sex life to his face? That might be a few extra spanks.” *Jo lets out a loud laugh, shaking her head and brushing her hair back over her shoulder* “I dont think I needed to even say anything. Like you say, he ruined my pokerface and if that didn’t work I’m sure I have a hickey or two or something like it somewhere. Maybe. I don’t know, Grey doesn’t like marking”
<Anna> “I don’t think what Gray does would be considered hickies.* "Anna chuckles, knowing how much her boy likes to bite. "So is Grey a biter too? Or is that just Gray?”
<Jo> “No, what your guy does is /definitely/ not considered hickies.” *Shifting in her spot, she rubs a hand against her neck, grinning back at Anna* “And no, not in the same way at all but theres definitely teeth action in some spots.”
<Anna> *Anna laughs* “Good think Ellen is a few states over then, you don’t have to worry about covering them up around your mom.”
<Jo> “They’re not exactly anywhere that would be visible unless I was walking around without pants.” *Jo’s grin widens out into a smirk, almost laughing again*
<Anna> “And with you that is a total possibility.” *Anna laughs* “
<Jo> "Possible, but unlikely. ‘least without my being able to cover them with a shirt until I could get the pants back on.”
<Anna> “You know I did notice you walking a lil funny when you came in. Gimped through sex, that’s an achievement Joanna Beth.” *Anna teases her smirking*
<Jo> *Jo flushes brightly, crossing her legs under herself with an attempt at a pissy look* “Like I say, we beat our record. Grey has a thing about one upping himself, which I really am never going to discourage if thats what happens.”
<Anna> *Anna laughs and she sits up more smirking at Jo with an evil amusement.* “I can’t wait till he tries to beat a 24 hour record then because then I’ll know not to panic when you come in a week later walking bowlegged”
<Jo> “He says we can’t just stay in bed because of chaffing, so I’m hoping that’d stop the bowleggedness. Maybe.” *Jo ducks her head down, rubbing a hand against her inner thigh where she can already feel a slightly sore bruise coming through* “Either that, or I’ll just say in bed until the walk is back to normal.”
<Anna> “There maybe nothing normal ever again about your walk if Grey continues a life of beating his own records.” *Anna’s enjoying this far more than she wants to admit, watching Jo look uncomfortable.* “I’m glad Gray doesn’t have that quirk.”
<Jo> “Ah, but not all of what we do will effect my walking, Anna. I’m not the only one who’ll get on my knees.” *Jo flushes brightly, smiling wickedly as she says it knowing Anna’ll probably make a comment but not really caring* “I’ll take getting pleased more and more over what kinks Gray /does/ have.”
<Anna> *Anna raises a brow at Jo and shrugs* “It may not all be just /his/ kinks. And while he might not get on his knees..he’s very good with other parts of his body.” *Running a hand through her hair she looks at the time* “So how soon can you ahve that outfit here?”
<Jo> “Preaching to the choir, Anna.” *Jo shakes her head, looking at Anna curiously before laughing* “I could get it today if I had the right incentive to do so, like you say, there is a costume shop further in city.”
<Anna> *Anna can’t believe she’s saying this but needs to snap Gray out of this mentality that she’s glass right now.* “And just what is the right incentive?”
<Jo> “You tell him I need to speak with him /without/ him laying a hand on me, and I’ll go pick you up one. I have something I need to discuss with him.” *Jo shrugs a shoulder, smiling slightly at Anna actually asking and feeling sort of bad for her through the happy haze*
<Anna> “I’ll tell him but what are you wanting to talk to him about?” *Anna looks curously at Jo, wondering what the other woman could want to say to Gray.“
<Jo> *Shaking her head, Jo pulls a slight face before running a hand through her hair* "Nothing too important, just a follow up to a conversation we had a while ago.”
<Anna> “Uh huh. Just don’t kill each other.” *Anna runs her hand through her hair, she trusts them both but she doesn’t want the fragile peace to end.*
<Jo> “Well, I’ll go get that for you, I’ll get Sophie to bring it up so you can get ready in peace without him potentially popping in on me around, yeah?” *Jo hops up of the bed, wincing slightly to herself before grinning brightly* “You just remember to ask that somewhere in there, okay?”
<Anna> “Anna laughs watching Jo move awkwardly without her usual grace* "Uh huh, and you might want to go soak in a hot tub or you won’t make a second round anytime in the next few weeks.”
<Jo> “I’ll keep that in mind.” *Jo rubs the back of her neck in embarrassment before ducking out the door heading out to keep her end of the bargain with a laugh*
