their history:

mike and will have been childhood best friends since they were five. they've gone through everything together — the good, the bad, and the ugly. they get each other on a level that no one else does, which is a blessing, but also — sometimes — a curse.

mike's always been very insecure of himself, self-conscious of his looks, talents, skills, and confidence. will's everything that mike wishes he was: good-looking, popular, team captain, kind, out. mike truly cares about will, but he's always held a hidden resentment against him. he's jealous of the fact that will's so outwardly himself, proudly feigning the confidence that mike lacks.

while will would never actually admit this to himself, he's always had a sort of mini-crush on mike. it's easy to fall in love when your best friend takes care of you so well. it's 1996, and while the world's not exactly the kindest, he's happy to find himself out as gay to a supportive and incredibly loving family.

mike starts dating el hopper, the brightest and most popular girl in school, in the spring semester of freshman year. in some ways, he hopes that by dating her, he'll gain some newfound confidence. instead, it brings heaps of self-doubt and pessimism as the two find themselves breaking up and getting back together more times than they can count.

frustrated after one of he and el's many break-ups, mike finds himself in will's car one afternoon after soccer practice. will attempts to cheer mike up by boasting about mike's own achievements and kind-hearted personality, saying how the right girl won't be able to pass him up like that. it's then when mike kisses him, straight out of the blue, and will can't help but reciprocate.

pre-crash:

mike treats will and el as their own separate entities, people who he can't mix on any occasion. he spends most of his days kissing el to at least assume some normalcy, and to prove to his parents that he's the respectable boy they've made him out to be. when he's with el, he convinces himself he and will are nothing but childhood best friends, and that there's nothing going on between them. in his downtime, when practice runs late and el's already reported home for curfew, he kisses will like his life depends on it.

mike's worst fear comes true during senior year when will and el tell him their parents are getting married, meaning the two will become step-siblings. it's then when will decides to call it quits. he can't keep doing this with mike if el's going to be his sister in less than a year. no matter how much they enjoy their late-night make-out sessions, it's not fair to her.

mike agrees, albeit reluctantly. there's something about will that el can't give him. it's an apt hunger, running deep through his veins. mike and will spend the rest of the year as friends, with at least two feet of distance between the two of them. but mike would be lying if he said he didn't think of will whenever he kissed el, imagined his lips instead of hers, his hands in his hair. he's now not only jealous of will's confidence, but the fact that he can be proudly gay without an ounce of shame for it.

when the tigers make it to nationals, they all attend the celebration party. mike offers to drive el and will home, who are both clearly wasted. after mike drives el home for her early curfew, he's suddenly overcome with a hunger he's never felt before. mike is instantly compelled to pull over. despite vowing to never do this again, mike can't help the part of him that's starved of will's presence, that wants a final taste of will before he's forbidden. he explains this in due time to will, who, to mike's surprise, can't resist the urge. they share what they think will be their last kiss the day before nationals in the back of mike wheeler's rover.

post-crash:

when flight 2525 crashes in the middle of the canadian wilderness, mike finds himself in a strange position. on one hand, he's stranded in the middle of nowhere with no parents or peers to judge him, with complete, unabashed freedom. on the other, he's stranded with will and el in the same, sequestered space, and he's not sure he's able to handle the two of them at once. it's only a matter of time before el finds out, and mike can't resist the deepest desires of his heart now that he's got will all to himself....

I could not resist the urge to mash two of my favourite shows together so here's what I have come up with! I am planning to draw most of the other characters and write their backstories and plot in this au as well, so keep your eyes peeled for when I eventually get to that. I convinced myself that I would write a fic for this au but ultimately could not as I am not confident enough in my writing abilities as of yet plus it would be an absolutely insane and lengthy project that I'm not sure I'm up for/would finish. I've decided to commit to drawing everyone instead and writing up small drabbles of how I think they would interact in this world so... there's that! I will obviously not be writing the entire au, but I do have LOTS of ideas for what could happen, so please feel free to send an ask if you have any questions ! :)

keep in mind this is just how I would personally go about the characters if they were put in this universe. mike obviously takes inspiration from shauna, and will obviously takes inspiration from jackie, but don't think that their entire story will be exclusively taken from these characters. will is much more similar to shauna than jackie personality wise, and likewise with mike and jackie, but narratively he and jackie both serve the same functions. do take this with a grain of salt as I also had to mesh their canon personalities with the respective character roles they're taking on so... I hope I did it well!

additionally, I just want to put it on the record that jackie and shauna are extremely complex characters, who are not wholly good or bad. in order for mike and will to reflect jackie and shauna's relationship dynamic, I wanted to incorporate the cheating plot. I know cheating is a very taboo topic in the stranger things fandom because in canon mike and will would never do such a thing, however, in this au, mike and will are not going to the 'saint-like' figures we often see them portrayed as in this fandom. they're not wholly bad, but they have flaws, which make them and jackieshauna super interesting characters. I also just really wanted to explore a kind of toxic relationship with byler because It's just interesting to me okay!!!! Idk!!!! don't send the pitchforks after me.

so yes... if we are comparing will's function in the narrative to jackie's he does have to die unfortunately. but I also have lotttsss of new ideas about how will gets to this point and how mike chooses to deal with it after 👀

bro i just had an epiphany for the spy au, Ivan making Arthur eat enough, 3 meals a day with the children, Arthur picks up the habit of stress eating from Ivan and Alfred and Matthew picks it up from him and holy shit the speed in which this man puts on weight is a bit scary. Ivan does not mind because now there is meat on the bones and he doesn't feel like his liver will be punctured whenever Arthur hugs him.

Also francis shows up, congratulates them on their marriage gives them a bottle of wine, says Arthur's getting an ass after a couple glasses, Ivan makes sure rancis knows that Arthur's ass is his, Francis leaves, gay tension levels skyrocket, and they kiss for the first time/

i keep thinking about the polaris-chihiro roleswap au. like it's making me crazyy

the base implications of byakuya's crossdressing as polaris in the togami novel canon is to demonstrate his determination to win at any cost, even go so far as to do something as 'demeaning' as wear a dress

the most-widely accepted reason, both in the game and in fan theory, for chihiro's crossdressing was that it was to evade the shame that came with being identified as a non-masculine boy

^^ to reflect this in the au version: chihiro follows this line of thinking, but also adopted more of canon byakuya's reasoning for choosing his appearance in the togami novels. rather than adjusting his appearance to try and explain away his discomfort about being perceived as effeminate/non-masculine, he leans into an appearance to appear non-threatening and boyish -> not quite masculine enough to be taken seriously, not quite feminine enough to be ridiculed and totally shunned -> good way to get his dad's business competitors to underestimate him and let their guards down

^^ because of this, instead of canon byakuya's over-pompousness and selfishness, he takes on more of a 'sweet prince' kind of demeanor, as in being very friendly and polite and taking advantage of weaknesses that he catalogs in those around him. there is the idea in his head that he needs to constantly reassure himself and others that he is above them, both as a way to help retain the benefits of the 'pampered innocent rich boy' persona and also to eliminate any misgivings he might have regarding his own self

like canon byakuya, he's kind of twisted, but he's more subtle about it

au version: polaris's intentions with crossdressing started very much the same as the togami novel canon and maybe even with the reasoning given for canon chihiro's crossdressing - a method to protect herself from people who would have regarded her differently as a male - but she got comfortable in it and withdrew from the heir competition because of it, while also trying to hide that reason

looking only at canon chihiro's dialogue about herself in regards to the chapter 2 motive, there's no clear indication that she's referring to the need to 'become comfortable being a boy', and moreso the indication that she needs to become stronger/more self-confident in preparation of being outed by monokuma, so that when she starts getting attacked for 'being a boy', she can defend herself (shoutout to @/rainbow-crane and this post for this analysis!! highly recommend reading)

with regards to this in the au version: polaris, though really enjoying life more as polaris polanski vs. as byakuya togami, might conflate the worry of being outed with being discovered by the togami family - like the idea of 'i moved out of my parents house and socially transitioned without telling them and i really dont want to deal with it if anyone outs me to them' but coupled with the fact the parents are extremely rich and powerful and don't take well to shame being brought upon their name...her paranoia is justified

^^^ as it is, she's slightly different from canon chihiro. she wouldn't be fine with being outed to her classmates, per se, but if it happened she's confident that she'd be able to handle it (and if you consider how far she got in the competition before willingly dropping out, the reasoning for her confidence is clear). however, the main concern is if people were to find out who she was related to, and if that information were to find itself back to the togami cong.

^^ also bc of that. she does this weird mix of catty rudeness coupled with genuine good intentions. like she can act as self-absorbed and superior as byakuya does in canon, but is much more willing to take initiative to help others. a weird combination of refraining of letting people get too close while also understanding the importance of community and group work (and also showing off) - she'll often see herself as a keystone in any given operation

like canon chihiro, she ultimately just wants to be able to get along with her peers without worry

first up myth and mayhem because i fucking love them (you can tell because i affectionately torture mayhem and made myth the villain <3 )

at first the relationship is more hateful than anything. myth does something, and no matter how small that something is, it just makes mayhem explode. mayhem is very easily set off when someone is messing with him. or his friends. (though mayhem's relationship with his friends, or just anyone in general, is fascinating and would warrant its own yap session) mayhem's mad that this guy almost got them killed for his own amusement and wants to basically take ringer from him (who he is REALLY protective of) for god knows what reason

so he tries to deal with myth in the way he knows best: trying to kick his ass! only because myth isn't physically there, it's impossible. which makes mayhem even angrier, and myth more amused (and more in love with mayhem but he's totally in denial about this. he's absolutely convinced he abandoned all of his sentimentality years ago. he's wrong) and myth, because 1) he thinks it's funny and 2) realizes that angry mayhem will slow the group down, keeps provoking him on purpose

mayhem is also getting angry at myth because he knows he's feeling something about this son of a bitch, but he's not sure what it is and it annoys him. add that to whatever hell myth's putting them through and you have a recipe for absolute rage and disaster

and then the wasteland happens

they don't know who myth is still, but they know he's powerful. he has a sword made from shardstone (my name for the red rocks), he's friendly with the krill, and, as he can grow the darkness plants, has been going out of his way to make everyone's lives that much worse

now if there's something mayhem likes it's powerful people. which isn't surprising given that he is the world's biggest attention-seeker and powerful people can get you more attention. and so when myth almost kills him with that sword he thinks "wait a minute this guy is some serious shit" but is still trying to deny to himself that he has any emotional attachements to this guy. oh mayhem you fool

myth by this point realizes that he does have a crush on mayhem and now thinks it's absolutely hilarious and a good idea to try and push him into a situation where mayhem will be forced to admit any feelings he has for him. thus why he gets the gang to go to eden. there, he can have total control of the situation and they can't complain about it

of course mayhem is freaked out when he learns what myth is but he also hates him more. and is still in raging denial. but on the way back home, after ringer's been handed over to myth, he realizes "well if the world is basically about to end i might as well find some way to tell this guy i like him. without telling him outright because that would be a bruise on my pride and i am a proud little asshole"

so he basically forces ringer to go back home instead by "sacrificing" himself. he lies and claims it's because he cares about ringer (which he sort of does, he's honestly closer to ringer than his own sister), but he's really doing it for selfish reasons. which is very mayhem. he is a selfish little asshole how is he the protagonist here

anyways he finally gets to fight myth. and they're both excited about this fight and while they're pretending to still hate one another they both know they won't be able to keep it up for much longer. so when myth absolutely destroys mayhem and leaves him there, dying on the ground, mayhem just. summons the last of his energy and rage and love. and just. tackles myth. and they have the world's most hate-filled kiss. but they're secretly enjoying it

also when mayhem is basically a zombie he is absolutely enjoying his time with myth but he would never tell anyone that lmao. myth knows though. and he WILL bring it up if i make a sequel for this

Kinda personal but, haven't shipped anything new in like 3 years. And then wriolette comes in and im like- 2 well adjusted, emotionally healthy (in their own ways) adults that can communicate their feelings about each other fairly well, canonically has a healthy relationship and understanding about each other both in professional and personal setting, barrels down my life and my mind just went :

"that's it, that's the good one, turn up the shipping gears we're going home old time style"

Never played (and probably never will play) genshin, don't know shit abt the lore (except from memes), and all I know is a handful of characters.
