Eleven-year-old John Tracy, awake at the slightest creak of his floorboards, throws back his star-printed duvet and scrambles from his bed, squealing as he tries to escape his Mom's relentless cold hands.

Today's the day!

"I want syrup on mine!" John throws on clothes, a grey NASA t-shirt and blue jeans, and stuffs his feet into his slippers to race after her. Baby Alan has just started on solids, and that means more competition than ever for breakfast.

Part of John wishes his astronaut Father could be taking him to the Space Centre - but Jeff is on Moonbase Alpha with Uncle Lee for the next three weeks. Still, while his Mom might not be quite the same endless well of space facts, John really does appreciate her looking out for his interests. And with four brothers, he's excited to get out the house and spend time with her, one on one. They don't get that often at all. He sure is lucky that Grandma offered to take care of Gordon and baby Alan this weekend. And that his latest grade card came back full of A's.

He sneaks a plate out from the stack and takes the pancake pan from Scott with both small, skinny hands, nudging his helpful big brother out the way to cook his own pancakes. John can tell by the little batter left in the bowl that he's had at least five already.
