World Watercolour Month: 13. Valuable
I've been doing some reading on the Princess Theatre recently for work and thinking a lot about the change in its value over the last century or so. It opened in 1915 with an opulent interior, state of the art temperature controls and electronic ticketing (!!) but declined after moving from live theatre to cinema because films were difficult to get in WWII. After a stint as a retail space, it became known for "blue films" (i.e. porn) in the 70s and 80s before it began showing a mix of mainstream and independent films later on.
It's generally too expensive to visit and now is up for lease again so I've only actually seen a movie there once, but it's certainly an iconic structure in Old Strathcona.

April 23, 2024
Ms Notley: Now, first this government wasted $2 million on the ramblings of Preston Manning that betrayed common sense and promoted a call for, quote, nonscientific narratives. Now we’ve learned they’ve handed well over another $2 million to a discredited and failed UCP candidate to question the government’s response to this pandemic. To the Premier: how can she justify, one, wasting more than $2 million on this flight of fantasy and, two, paying her failed candidate, whose claims this very government described as false and dangerous?
Ms Smith: I might educate the member opposite of what the scientific method is, and I quote, it “involves careful observation” . . . [interjections]
The Speaker: Order. Order. Order. The hon. the Premier.
Ms Smith: “The scientific method involves careful observation” . . . [interjections]
The Speaker: Order. Order. Order. This is not how this works, where I rise, bring the House to order, sit back down, and the House immediately proceeds to not be in order. The Premier has the call.

in the past i’d get whiplash over how much things haven’t changed and how frustrating that is and today i’m reading all these articles on cafes and shops in old strathcona in the 90s and this is dating myself certainly but the fact that i read things like “oh yeah this is the first non-smoking tim hortons in alberta and the second in western canada!” makes me double take so much
“oh yeah we have a second and third location of this hip whyte ave cafe but if you want the poetry readings you probably won’t find them at the non-smoking location” EXCUSE ME
#anyway the propaganda worked i'm SOOO glad we got rid of smoking asap#im old enough that i remember designated smoking areas#like indoors etc but by then they were already being phased out#the other funny thing is the constant ups and downs of old strathcona from seedy and dead to seedy and hip to seedy and corporate#anyway does anyone remember a store on whyte that had like a zillion million cat things or#my one early memory of whyte ave is getting a little cat hole punch#and whenever we were in the uni area id be like Please the Cat Store ;;#hapo reads canadian history#hapo reads queer history#this article being like nooo dont take tims away#its the last bastion of smokers coffee and cigarettes go so well together#aaaaaaaaa no yuck ick

For the last few days of 2024 I'm going to share some of my favourite snaps of the year. Instead of doing a standard Top 10 or whatever, I'm gonna choose a single photo as a favourite from each month. Here's March, a little street shot outside the Old Strathcona Farmers Market.

silly comic inspired by seeing someone at kdays with an aroace cape :3 quatsch asked what it was and i of course recognized it being something of an aroace myself and i realized 1. it was the first time i had seen it in person and 2. considering it was in a crowd of Edmontonians, it immediately connected some dots for me about what it reminded me of.
I will be manning a booth for a couple hours at pride fest next week. if you're in edmonton, stop by for the party! the city is going through some soul searching re: the history of pride and what it is going to look like in the future and it's a very interesting history that I'm in the process of researching and writing up.
when I was designing Edith, she was aroace partially for self insert reasons (lol) and partially because her original character was "disgusted by ed and cal's obsession with each other" (as well as "tired of hockey"). Over time it evolved into some character development related reasons - she had more of an ability to "pass" but also to be understanding in the period where Ed was really struggling with his sexuality, so after some angry catfighting in the 70s they really came together to support each other. In retrospect, it works out well with the history of the city (i.e. a lot of queer history being concentrated in downtown/northside on Ed's turf cf. with the early pride celebrations being located and relocated in Edith's hood in Old Strathcona in the 90s and again in the mid 2010s).

Today in Christian History

Today is Thursday, June 27th, 2024. It is the 179th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar; Because it is a leap year, 187 days remain until the end of the year.
1638: Sultan Murad IV has Patriarch Cyril (Lucaris) of Constantinople (pictured above) strangled and his body thrown into the Bosporus. Cyril was the foremost Orthodox leader of the seventeenth century, although he caused controversy by adopting Calvinist ideas, later repudiated by an Orthodox synod. He had also served as Patriarch of Alexandria.
1786: Twenty-six-year-old James Upton is ordained as pastor of the Baptist Church in Greenwalk, London, which has only twelve members. Fourteen years later it will have grown to 290. Upton will also write hymns.
1870: Death of Cyrus Kingsbury a Presbyterian missionary to the Choctaw Indians. He had also raised money to free African-American slaves.
1895: Ordination of Onangwatgo [Cornelius Hill] as an Episcopal deacon. In 1903 this Oneida chief will be the first member of the Oneida nation ordained as a priest.
1899: Launch of the Strathcona, mission boat of Wilfred Grenfell for his Labrador work. The ship is named for a key donor and christened by Lady Curzon-Howe.
1933: Death of James Mountain, an English evangelist and writer of hymn tunes. His most famous pieces had been the tunes to which we sing “Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting” and “Like a River Glorious.”
1944: Death of James Moffatt, who had made a new translation of the New Testament and taught church history.
1978: The “Moscow Seven,” Siberian believers, take refuge at the United States' embassy in Moscow.
