Ms Notley: Now, this Premier then had the gall recently to stand before Albertans and claim through crocodile tears to be concerned about the safety of children. She proceeded to announce a policy that has already started to marginalize, bully, and discriminate against transgendered Albertans under the age of 18, and all of that before it’s even law. To the Premier: why does she think protecting her career from the likes of David Parker is more important than the well-being, human rights, and lives of thousands of Alberta’s young people?
Ms Smith: I and Alberta’s government believe that Alberta’s transgender children deserve our unconditional love and support. We see you, we love you, and you matter, but your future choices as an adult also matter, and making sure that children have the right as adults to make a decision to have children is very important to us.

seeing a lot of people blaming Alberta (which fair lol) cause the MP for Battle River - Crowfoot is going to give up his seat for PP.
PP is going to run in byelection cause it's a safe seat for the conservatives.
people are blaming Alberta because PP will probably win (80% conservative turnout in that riding) HOWEVER, he was the MP of Carelton for 20 YEARS. THAT IS ONTARIO. THAT IS NOT ALBERTA.
#my.txt#y'all should have been voting against him to begin with 😮💨#''thanks alberta'' WE are doing our best. strathcona is still NDP#we got 2 liberal ridings#i am sad about edmonton - griesbach though Blake Desjarlais was !#*an awesome MP - while i was living in his riding ***#my riding was conservative 😮💨😭😭😭😭#this is supposed to be a light comment#blah blah blah NO LEFTIST IN-FIGHTING#i love everyone*

yeghaw :)
my apologies for neglecting things over here, I had a lovely vacation in Halifax and then promptly died of the plague and then my parents were visiting and between all that I had to work hard to recoup my financial losses (which I'm still recouping from... a lot... to the point I resisted taking advantage of this discount with my dollarama hat and my plastic boots from winners).
anything is possible with fluevog boots and baked goods :) even making Edith debut a halloween costume early. Or me making a comic nearly on time.

World Watercolour Month: 13. Valuable
I've been doing some reading on the Princess Theatre recently for work and thinking a lot about the change in its value over the last century or so. It opened in 1915 with an opulent interior, state of the art temperature controls and electronic ticketing (!!) but declined after moving from live theatre to cinema because films were difficult to get in WWII. After a stint as a retail space, it became known for "blue films" (i.e. porn) in the 70s and 80s before it began showing a mix of mainstream and independent films later on.
It's generally too expensive to visit and now is up for lease again so I've only actually seen a movie there once, but it's certainly an iconic structure in Old Strathcona.
#world watercolour month#watercolour#traditional art#urban sketching#old strathcona#edmonton#alberta#canada#still debating whether to put the rest of the text on the sign or not haha sob#this painting is actually quite tiny and the text was so tricky#i think something like this would make a cute sticker though

Whyte Ave Homes For Sale: Claim Its Top Exciting Benefits
Whyte Avenue is considered to be the heart of Edmonton, filled with historic charm, trendy shops, and vibrancy. Whyte Avenue Real Estate demonstrates this as an excellent location to check for buyers with homes and condos combined seeking contemporary living and community-oriented living. In this writing piece, you can learn more about the benefits of the Whyte Ave homes for sale, and Strathcona condos for sale.
Living in Whyte Avenue would put one at the hub of all cultural events happening inside Edmonton. From cafes to boutiques, from other restaurants to nightclubs, life on the avenue can be excitingly dynamic for young professionals, families, and retirees alike. It is close enough to downtown Edmonton and also to the University of Alberta for much convenience.
Whyte Ave homes for sale itself has an incredible range from classic character homes to the newest of modern constructed properties for sale. From spacious single-family homes to modern condos, they span different price brackets to satisfy your budget and taste.
Strathcona Condos for Sale: Urban Living at Its Finest
Of the high-end neighborhoods in Edmonton, Strathcona carries the torch with its condos for people who look to have a low-maintenance way of life. Condo living in the heart of Whyte Avenue, the Strathcona condos for sale are within close proximity to the amenities along Whyte Avenue but offer a more residential-type feel and pace.
youtube
Amenities for condos in Strathcona usually include state-of-the-art exercise facilities, rooftop patios, and secure parking. Such condos would be suitable for people seeking convenience and luxury who can also appreciate the chance to live in the city without maintenance worries.
The up-and-coming neighborhood of Strathcona returns quite a decent dividend with its condos. For starters, growing property values combined with high demand for rentals make buying a condo in Strathcona a pretty sound long-term investment.
Strathcona condos for sale provide a different level of opportunity for buyers who look to experience an area that is alive and attached to Edmonton. Be it a family home or even a sleek condo, Whyte Avenue and Strathcona have their deals to offer.

Dr. Metz: Quote: we are starting to get to the point where there is serious harm that is going to be afflicting the most vulnerable patients we have in this province. Those are the words of Dr. Mona Gill speaking out about the staffing crisis that is unfolding in Alberta’s neonatal intensive care units. Units are often understaffed. The option proposed by the minister is to fly babies out of Edmonton or even Alberta to get care. Flying sick babies because they can’t get care in Edmonton: how did we get to this?
Member LaGrange: Mr. Speaker. I would agree that flying a baby out of Edmonton is an absolute last resort. The last time it happened was actually under the NDP’s watch, seven years ago, due to capacity.
Ms Notley: Take responsibility for your job.
An Hon. Member: Is five years long enough for accountability?

so, the canadian federal election isn't until 2025 (specifically ON my birthday which will be really fun) but with the orange fucker's victory in the states, rumours that a snap election will be called are increasing. i'm seeing a lot of people say things like "i like the ndp better too, but they aren't going to win, so you should strategically vote for the liberals".
based on this projection, you would think that's correct. and it would be, if we voted directly, but we don't. we vote for the MPs in our ridings, and the leader of whichever party elects the most MPs becomes prime minister. not every riding has the same projections as the federal.
for example, i live in alberta, a famously conservative province. the liberals are not currently projected to win a single riding here. on 338canada, all but two ridings range in projections from "likely cpc" to "safe cpc". one of those two, edmonton strathcona, is projected as "safe ndp", and the other, edmonton griesbach, is projected as "cpc lean". this is the current projection for it:
voting for the liberals would not be the "strategic vote" in this riding. voting for the ndp would not be "throwing away your vote" in this riding. instead of immediately voting liberal this election, take a look at the polls and projections for your riding and make a decision based on how things are looking for you, not for the entire country. i think the amount of american election content we (understandably) get has made some people forget the differences in our voting system.
(if you don't know your riding, you can search your postal code on elections.ca and it will tell you. english speakers go here and french speakers go here)
#i know the election isn't for a while (unless they call it early) but im seeing a lot of this go around at the moment and wanted to say smth#canadian politics#2025 canadian election#canada#vote ndp#or liberal *said through gritted teeth*#honestly i wouldn't be shocked if the liberals get even less popular as we get closer to election day#and the ndp come in second in even more ridings#please don't just blindly vote for the liberals. vote for who is most likely to beat the con in YOUR RIDING#even if your riding is “safe cpc” (mine is too. i feel your pain). your vote still matters.#even if your riding is “safe ndp/lpc/gpc”. don't get complacent

Who speaks the most languages? Also who has the best French?
well this just might be my most ambitious ask in a while :) shout out to the 1.5 francophones who may or may not follow this blog. And also for those 1.5 francos...
*cependant, selon le Lego, mon éditrice n'est même pas considérée québécoise haha >>;
more info below!
I already expect this piece to get less engagement because it's (mostly) not in English, and I'm afraid I'm still going to be more annoying and not provide a translation. As previously I will lean into making a statement Windex-style by purposefully not translating what I've written above into English just because the point of celebrating Franco-Albertan heritage month is, well, acknowledging the unique status of French in this country and how there is an expectation to conform to English in this province that needs a little challenging. I hope if nothing else, it strikes your curiosity enough to painstakingly type it into google translate so you can get half of the banter.
Another question that languished at the bottom of the box for over a year! This was because I felt I should make a real effort to write in French, of course, but also because I struggled with the wording of the question and ultimately didn't answer it. The "most" or the "best" are very loaded terms, so I avoided answering them entirely particularly because we have several languages that risk losing native speakers and because there's a lot of bs wrapped up in what "good" french is that I'm not skilled enough to unpack (though you can read what Windex wrote on this matter earlier on this blog... And here as well).
I have to strike a balance between representing the gang here as individuals (and immortals to boot) who have a lot of time on their hands and some interest and investment in learning languages on one hand... but also as representations of "average" people on the other. Francophone travellers aren't going to find many French speakers outside of airports, national parks, or government services in this province, but it still might surprise you considering all the "everyone outside of Quebec hates French" rhetoric that politicians like to fling around. It's more complicated than that, obviously, but I can mostly talk about my own personal experience with French here. I tried to represent both the reality that Franco-Alberta exists (represented by Ed) and the stereotypical resistance to French here (represented by Calvin, though clearly he understands enough to respond here. I also just think he tries to play dumb on purpose so that others underestimate him, it's all part of the image!)
Finally, I don't speak any of the languages (Michif, Tagalog, Punjabi, Cree) represented here so I hope they pass muster for the purpose of this little comic! ;~;b I have also represented Calvin speaking Mandarin previously on this blog!
oh yeah, and that "english and business" quote is from kevin o'leary who is from montreal so make of that what you will.
