Old Lyme, CT - c. 1775 - The Hiram Beckwith House | Made a rainy day visit (my first) to the Old Lyme Historical Society today to learn more about this gambrel roof cape with its distinctive gable end profile. Before reading a recently completed property report (image 2-3), another less reliable source (a prior sale listing) suggested to me an earlier date of 1715. This did seem possible but for the chimney that I’d assumed was much later not only because of its gable end position but also for its unique taper (not specifically mentioned in the report) which I’m not used to seeing on 18th or 19th century houses. I’d love an expert opinion on the possible date of this chimney form which was faintly visible in a 1930s photograph I also saw this afternoon. . I almost missed going to the Florence Griswold Museum and I'm glad I made it. Wish I had more time to explore it. This is where an American Impressionist Art Colony gathered. The history here is fantastic and as an artist I can appreciate. They also have amazing docents that gave me a detailed tour! Amazing! Sad I missed the gift shop though.
