I'm suffering from decision paralysis because I have way too many photos from like the past 15 years, but since I definitely want to show some of my wolf photography too, why not start with the first time I ever photographed a wolf pup.

This is Bootsmann (or just Bo) and he was born in 2010 in Wildpark Lüneburger Heide. He's 2 months old in the first picture, 3 months old in the middle and 6 months in the last, after his move to Wildfreigehege Saerbeck.

Last time I've seen him was in 2017 with his mate and two of his kids, kinda just haven't gotten around to visiting him since then. Hope he's still alive and kicking, since he'd be an Oldmann now!

The only time a fictional character ever did “Whoa what if I had known this person who wasn’t born at the precise moment I was at some other time in the past and our ages were an issue?” successfully was Andy Dwyer when he did math and realized that if he and April had been friends when he was in third grade and she was a baby, he didn’t know anything about infant care and could have killed her. This was successful because it was funny and it was obviously a ridiculous leap to make, when April and Andy are clearly adults now who don’t need to know anything about infant care to be able to rely on each other.

So that romance novel in that earlier post has a paragraph musing about a mere four-year age gap.

(Side note: can you imagine being twenty-seven years old—being a grown adult with bills to pay and grocery shopping to do—and contemplating hooking up with someone who is thirty-one and thinking, “Whoa, older woman”? Come on. That’s just a woman to you. You’re in the same demographic. Go enjoy the same generational trends together, you two.)

ANYWAY. Age gap discourse has gotten us to the point that either romance novelists are reassuring us that entire unquestionable adults with different birthdays should be allowed to hook up, or the romance novelists are writing characters who are worried about Problematic Age Gaps into their fiction, which is truly a bizarre choice

Now, to be fair, in many historical romances, some age gaps are noted; no one wants to have to marry Lord Oldmann, Earl of Creakyjoints. Often enough it’s just because he’s old (though in the historicals no one ever complains of the Power Dynamic) but he might also be a drunk or a lecher or have enough dead wives that he seems cursed or maybe he’s just deeply unpleasant to be around. And so very often, the heroine is saved from such a fate and is able to marry the hero, who may well be a mere ten years older than she is (she has just finished her first season and he has been doing English Gentleman Things for a while, you see)

I don’t know if the Older Woman in the paragraph in that post is the love interest or not. If not, well, maybe that’s for the best. If so, that maybe makes it weirder? I’ve never read an Age Gap romance where the age gap was a big part of it, so I don’t known if in those stories the leads spend a lot of time thinking about how different in age they are, but that example is truly mind-boggling

Just think. Four years. When the POV character was a baby, the Older Woman would have barely been in preschool. If they had been friends they both would have been helpless but the Older one would for sure have not been able to care for a baby

This is not much of a rant. I should have gone the sleepy route. I’ll do that now

IMMORTAL BELOVED

Wo wir uns doch gerade so viel mit klassischer Musik und vor allem mit Beethoven beschäftigen, seinen Sinfonien, Klarvierkonzerten, Missa Solemnis oder dem Triplekonzert, war es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis IMMORTAL BELOVED im BluRay-Player landet. Jene Geschichte die sich mit der Frage beschäftigt, wer wohl die unsterbliche Geliebte war, die der Maestro in seinen Briefen erwähnt.

Bernard Rose gelingt ein geschicktes Aneinanderreihen von Erinnerungen der Damen aus Beethovens Leben, die für diese Rolle in Frage kommen könnten und untermalt mit Beethovens eigenen Werken. Alles zusammen ergibt eine interessante, wenn auch fiktive Beethoven-Biografie, die sich auch 24 Jahre später noch sehr gut angucken lässt. Ein zeitloses Werk. Das liegt zum einen natürlich am großartigen Gary Oldmann, der als Ludwig van Beethoven eine seiner Paraderollen abliefert. Aber auch alle anderen Rollen sind für 1994 starbesetzt: Isabella Rossellini, Jeroen Krabbé, Johanna ter Steege und Valeria Golino.

Die Musik wurde von niemanden geringeren als Georg Solti mit dem London Symphony Orchestra eingespielt. Der Film mag hier und da seine kleinen Längen haben, aber am Ende siegt die Musik – wie sie eingesetzt wird, ist schlicht großartig. Bitte auf den Sternensee am Ende achten.

Für alle, die mit Klassik nicht so viel am Hut haben, ist das der ideale Einstieg. Beethovens Musik nicht zu mögen, sich von ihr nicht verzaubern oder gar in seelische Abgründe navigieren zu lassen, ist fast unmöglich. Für alle Klassikfans ist der Film sowieso Pflicht!

Lang lang ist's her, dass ich IMMORTAL BELOVED gesehen habe. Dieses Mal (gefühlt der dritte oder vierte Durchlauf nach mindestens 10 Jahren Pause) war es so ganz anders, sich diesen zeitlosen Musikfilm noch einmal anzusehen. Das lag ganz einfach daran, dass ich heute so viel mehr von Beethovens Musik kenne, einiges gar etwas tiefer durchdrungen habe. Das machte den Film für mich nochmal größer. Als Fan der Musik würde ich sogar soweit gehen und mich ein bisschen beschweren, dass zu wenig von den vielen, wunderschönen Beethoven-Klängen drin sind - Jammern auf hohem Niveau...

IMMORTAL BELOVED ist ein Film-Klassiker, der auch nach 25 Jahren noch voll ins Herz trifft und sicher auf ewig als Klassiker gelten wird. Vielleicht ist auch das der Grund, dass sich seitdem nie wieder jemand (außer COPY8NG BEETHOVEN) getraut hat, das Leben des übergroßen Genies zu verfilmen. Ich bin gespannt, ob sich mein Wunsch irgendwann einmal erfüllt? Dieser ist ganz einfach: Beethovens 'Ode an die Freude' zur Deutschen Nationalhymne zu machen! Liegt doch total auf der Hand, oder? Bis dahin gibt es von mir
