“An Unexpected Family,” an Olicity&William Christmas fic
An Unexpected Family
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Pairings: Olicity, very brief mentions of John/Lyla and Thea/Roy
Summary: William spends his first Christmas with his new family.
AN: For the purposes of this story, assume that William is 12 years old this Christmas. There’s too much contradicting canon on this topic, but I’ve always thought that, based on the choice of actor, 12 makes more sense than 10.
This is my Olicity Secret Santa 2017 gift for @bokayjunkie . Because I spent Thanksgiving weekend watching Christmas movies, I got to wondering how William might spend the holidays with his new family. This started off with the simple idea of “five times William helped make Christmas dinner for his family” and quickly grew into an entire Thing. It took on a life of its own and went in directions I wasn’t intending, but in the best ways possible - at least I think so.
Friendly warning: you’ll probably want to have tissues on hand.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and enjoy!

An Unexpected Family
December 24th, 2017
The first year William helps his father make Christmas dinner, he burns the sweet potatoes.
“I’m sorry,” William mumbles as Oliver pulls the pan of charcoal black potatoes out of the oven.
“It’s okay, buddy,” Oliver assures him, smiling softly at his son as he sets the inedible dish on top of the stove. “There’s a lot that goes into cooking. You just need some practice. And besides, you did a great job on the mashed potatoes.”
“Yes, you did,” a voice responds from behind them, and William turns around just in time to see Felicity stick a spoon into the bowl of mashed potatoes and shove it into her mouth. “Mmmm, heavenly,” she sighs, and William laughs as Oliver takes the spoon out of her hands with a smirk.
“What did I tell you about sampling the food before dinner?” he asks, leaning in over her, but there’s a playful smile on his face, and William knows his father is just teasing her.
“ ‘Don’t,’ ” Felicity answers, and she reaches out to try and grab the spoon from him, but Oliver pulls it away from her and holds it out to William. William takes it and deposits it in the sink, out of Felicity’s reach.
“Oh, boo, you guys are no fun,” she pouts, and Oliver just smiles at her and bends down for a kiss. William turns away - not from embarrassment, but to give them some privacy, because he’s grown used to their displays of affection by now.
He doesn’t know either Oliver or Felicity very well yet, but he’s learning more and more about his father and his new step-mother everyday, and if there’s one thing he does know it’s that they love each other very much.
He gives them what he considers to be enough time for a kiss - which, unbeknownst to him, is not even close to enough time - before he asks, “What’s next?”

This is for the Olicity Secret Santa project for @blackcanarydinah. I hope you enjoy it and have a wonderful new year to come.
Felicity has forgotten Hanakkuh and the holidays have arrived, but everyone else has remembered around her.
Felicity sat on her couch listening to the comms while searching the necessary information out on her computer. She had needed a night in, despite the fact that she was still working with the team. After spending all day at the offices stuck in meetings for the company she and Curtis owned, all she had wanted was her pajamas and pint of mint chip.
“Feliss,” William said tapping her on the shoulder. “Can I head out? Some of the guys wanted to meet up at Big Belly Burger.”
Muting her end, Felicity glanced up and smiled at her step-son. “Of course. Just Big Belly Burger, right?”
William rolled his eyes. Something he was doing more and more lately now that he hit his teens. “Yes,” he muttered in exasperation. He was well aware she could easily track him so he hardly ever asked to be anywhere he really wasn’t. William had already tried to push those limits before only to have the Green Arrow drag his butt home in front of his friends.
Felicity smiled at the memory because it ended with William slamming his door shut in anger saying he would have so much explaining to do at school the next day. Oliver had stood there banging his green covered head against the wall in frustration, cursing teenage boys. Felicity had found herself doubling over in laughter because she knew that part of Oliver’s head-banging stemmed from the fact of the unknown. Earlier that day, the two of them discovered that Felicity was expecting their first child, which could easily be another headstrong male Queen, or worse, a female one.
Without thought, Felicity rubbed her swollen belly. “Go. Your father will be late tonight anyway.”
Concern lined William’s face. “You know, on second thought, it’s been a while since we’ve had a rematch.” William nodded toward the television where his game system was set up. “If you could take a break, we could play and order in some Chinese food.”
“Nice try.” Felicity knew exactly what he was trying to do. Oliver thought she didn’t know he had asked William to look after her when he was not there since she was so close to her due date. “I don’t need a babysitter. I’ll be fine. There’s still a whole month before this baby is due.”
“You sure?” William rocked back and forth on his heels. Felicity knew he really wanted to go. Oliver had his own nervous habits when he was ready to leave. She knew her boys well.
“Go,” Felicity told him again nodding toward the door. With one last concerned glance, William bolted. She was about to yell at him for leaving the front door open when she realized someone was there. Felicity’s first instinct was to turn on the comms and cry for help before reaching for her computer to use as a weapon. Too many times they had villains show up to their home. Only this was not some super villain. It was Donna Smoak. “Mom? What are you doing here?”
“Look at you,” Donna squealed as she entered, closing the door behind her. When she turned back her eyes were watering as she raised a hand to her red lips. “Oh, baby, you’re so big.”
Felicity pushed herself up off the couch. “That’s what happens when you are this far along.”
Donna toddled over on her sky-high heels and wrapped her hands around Felicity’s distended belly. “My grandbaby.”
“Mom. Mom.” Felicity tried to get her mom’s attention back on her and not on her burgeoning stomach. “Why are you here?”
“It’s Hanukkah,” Donna told her as she raised her blonde head to meet her daughter’s eyes.
“It is?” Felicity had completely forgotten. Then she wondered how she had managed to do that. But it hit her that things had been crazy of late. Meta-humans had shown up in swarms the last few weeks. Even Barry and his team, as well as Supergirl, had all been called in to assist. All part of the reason Oliver was not currently at home. Was it any wonder all of them had forgotten about the approaching holidays?
“You forgot,” Donna said while looking around the house. She make a small sound of disapproval. “You haven’t even decorated.”
“I did forget. And except for tonight, I really haven’t had any time to process the holidays were even here. Plus, I hardly have any energy anymore.”
“Well, that’s going to end because I’m here now,” Donna told her with a smile.
“How…” Felicity took a deep breath and swallowed hard. “How long are you staying?” Honestly, she already had sneaking suspicion of the answer.
“As long as you need me, baby. Oliver thought it would be a good idea if I came over and helped out with the baby coming and all.” Donna waved her hand dismissively, as if Felicity should have already realized all of this.
“Of course he did.” Felicity fisted her hand but held onto the smile she gave to her mother. “Did he know you were coming now?”
“Well, he did say something about in a few weeks, but I thought it was the holidays and they can be stressful.” Donna swiped a piece of hair from Felicity’s face. “I didn’t want you to stress out and have to do it all by yourself.” Donna shrugged. “With your jobs and Oliver’s own work, I just thought now was as good a time as any.” Donna cradled Felicity’s belly again. “I want my grandbaby to be the healthiest little girl who ever existed.”
Felicity held back the scream that bubbled in the bottom of her throat. But the scream she did hear was not her own. It came over the comms and made her jump.
“Honey?” Donna glanced up at her in concern. “Is everything okay? Is it the baby?”
Tapping the comms back on, Felicity was determined to find out the answer to the first question. “Is everything okay, Green Arrow? Spartan?”
“We’re fine,” Diggle assured her. “Can you tell us how many people are still in the building?”
“Sure. One second.” Felicity pushed her mom aside and raced as fast as she could toward her computer. Sitting down, Felicity pulled the computer onto what remained of her lap. She tapped away to pull up a heat image. “I’m reading five heat signatures outside of the team. Two in the Northeast side of the building and three in the south.”
“We’ll take the south,” Dinah said. She was with Wild Dog closest to the south side entrance.
“Spartan and I will cover the front,” Oliver told her. “Overwatch, how are you doing?”
Felicity glanced over at her mother who had perched on the other end of the couch, primping into a mirror. She let out a sigh before responding. “Let’s just say that we’re in for a long discussion when the mission is over.”
She heard Digg let out a strangled laugh while Oliver groaned. Felicity bit back a smile at their response. “Oh, it’s so much worse than that, buddy.”
“Do I need to come home?” Oliver asked.
“No. Not yet. Do what you need to do, but I’m signing off unless you think you’ll need me.”
“Overwatch is out,” Oliver informed the team. “Mission is our own.”
OQFSOQFSOQFS
Felicity sat across from her mom at the nearby Italian restaurant where she and Oliver liked to dine whenever they had a free moment. The ambiance was not exactly the same when your dinner partner was your mother.
“I like this place,” Donna said as she glanced around. “I think Quentin brought me here once.”
“When are you going to admit that the two of you are so much better together than apart? I know you tried to get back together with Noah, but c’mon.” Felicity stared down her mother. “You and Quentin, you’re meant to be.”
“How long did it take you and Oliver?” Donna deflected her mouth drawn up tight.
“Good point.” Felicity raised her sparkling water in her mom’s direction.
“Oh! I almost forgot.” Donna turned sharply and pulled a small box from her coat pocket and laid it on the table between them before reaching in her purse to extract an envelope. She slid both across the table toward Felicity. “Happy Hanukkah. The box is for the baby and the envelope is for you.”
Felicity reached for the envelope first feeling completely guilty that she had forgotten the holidays and thus had not done any shopping. In fact, the only shopping she had done lately was to prepare for the baby’s arrival.
Opening the envelope, Felicity found a certificate for a spa day. She glanced up questioning. Spa days did not seem like a good thing when she was this far along, even if she needed one desperately.
“It’s for the both of us,” Donna told her. “I thought you’d like a day to relax before the baby comes.” When Felicity opened her mouth to protest, her mom shook her head. “Don’t worry. They are aware that you’re pregnant and I contacted your OB-GYN and she thought that it might be a good idea to lower your blood pressure.”
Having nothing more to say, Felicity went with, “Thank you, mom.”
“Open the other one,” Donna said with almost uncontained glee. Her eyes sparkled in her excitement as she practically bounced in her seat.
Felicity reached for the overly pink box wrapped in a light pink bow. Pulling the latter off, Felicity slid the lid off and gaped at what was inside. “It’s gorgeous.” Her eyes lifted to meet her mother’s. “And too expensive.”
Donna only giggled with happiness. “You like it, then? I thought since your husband was pretty much born with a silver spoon in his mouth, that your daughter could have no less.” Donna flipped her hair. “Actually, I wanted better for my grandbaby.”
“This is definitely not less,” Felicity said as she pulled out the golden spoon with a handle studded with pink crystals. “Is this real gold?”
           Donna nodded. “And Swarovski crystals.”
“You can’t afford this,” Felicity told her in concern. She placed it carefully back in the box. “You should return this.”
“No. It was a gift from a client of mine at the casino.” Donna smiled and fluffed her hair. “He called me his lucky charm. He won big three nights in a row whenever I was nearby. So, he gifted me with that.” Donna tapped on the open box with the spoon. “He said he planned to give it to his granddaughter when she was about to be born, but she was stillborn and he hasn’t been lucky enough to have another granddaughter. Plus, he also tipped me enough to pay for my ticket here.”
“Wow!” Felicity was utterly speechless. She stared down at the spoon. “That guy must have been pretty rich already.”
Donna waved casually. “He was some sheik from somewhere. I don’t remember. He told me to call him Sam. And he wished you all the best for the baby.” Donna took a deep breath and her face that had been so animated fell. “It kind of took my mind off the latest fight I had with your father.”
It was Felicity who shook her head this time. “I don’t know why you even still try. You and Quentin did so much better.”
“Thanks.” Donna glared at her before reaching quickly for her wine. She tried to hide the fact that a tear fell down her face by taking a large drink.
“Sorry,” Felicity apologized. She knew Quentin was a tough subject for her mother. They really did work out when they wanted it to. Only her mother ran every time things got a little tough because she panicked thinking that Quentin would turn out to be another Noah. Which was irony because when she ran she always seemed to search out Noah. It was a horrible cycle that needed to be broken. Felicity could only hope that soon it would. Noah had hurt the Smoak women enough through the years.
“I still feel bad that I forgot about the holiday,” Felicity told her mom after she allowed her time to compose herself.
Donna patted Felicity’s hand. “Don’t worry about it, baby. I’m here now to help you out.”
However, it did bother Felicity. All through dinner and back to her house after dropping her mom off at the hotel that she insisted staying at. Kicking off her shoes at the door, Felicity rested against it for a moment. She closed her eyes to decompress from her mother’s surprise visit.
           “You okay?”
Felicity opened her eyes and noticed William peeking out from his bedroom door down the hallway. She smiled at him. “I’m fine.”
“Okay.” William nodded and began to close his door again, but then opened it again to address her. “Oh! I noticed you didn’t have your menorah up this year. I asked one of the guys to go with me to the storage place and we brought over the box. I hope that’s okay. I put the box in the kitchen for you. I didn’t want to set it up, I figured you would want to do that.” He came out of his room and approached. His face was lined in concern as he took in her pose, much like his father’s would have been had he seen her. “Do you want to rest? I can unpack it for you and you can light it later.”
“I can do it. Thank you, though.” Felicity pushed off the door, sliding off her coat before wrapping her arms around William for a quick hug. It was all he would allow lately. “But, I wouldn’t mind if you helped me hang this up.”
William took her coat from her and went to hang it up in the closet. He was as much of a neat freak as his father. Sometimes it drove Felicity insane. Today, Felicity was appreciative.
He followed her into the kitchen and Felicity noticed the box as well as a small one next to it. Turning so she could face her step-son, she picked it up. “What’s this?”
William’s cheeks turned pink. “Just a little something for your first day of Hanukkah. It’s not much.”
Felicity didn’t care that he didn’t want to hug anymore. She dragged him into her arms for a tight hug. Her cheeks became wet from the tears that she could not hold back. Her fracking pregnancy hormones. “Thank you. I feel even worse now that I forgot the holidays.”
William shrugged out of her hold. “It’s okay. You’ve been busy. Plus, Christmas is a week away, so you’re good. Amazon delivers pretty quickly,” he told her with a wink.
“Yes, they do,” Felicity said with a soft, watery laugh. She wiped her face with her sleeves.
“With all that you have on your plate with the company, working with dad at night, and the baby, I’m surprised you remember to eat sometimes.”
“That’s all on your dad.” Oliver hovered constantly making sure she rested and ate. And the later in the pregnancy it became, the more he managed to show up places to check in on her. It was only because of him that she was still functioning at this point.
“Open it,” William said nodding down at the package that was still in her hands.
Felicity lifted the lid of the small box and transferred it to the bottom. Separating the tissue paper, Felicity’s eyes began to tear up again. She seriously needed to buy stock in a tissue company if she ever became pregnant again. Pulling out the delicate chain, Felicity held it up and read what it said, leaving out the hashtag. “Number One Cheerleader.”
William smiled at her. “I couldn’t find ‘best step-mom ever’, so I thought this was just as good.”
“Aw, William.” Felicity reached out to draw him into another hug, but he side stepped her this time. William tended not to hug very often lately. Felicity blamed his teenage hormones. That would change soon enough when he found a girl he was interested in. “It’s perfect.”
Shoving his hands into his pockets, William rocked on his heels, signaling that he was over her overt affection and ready to leave, though he looked pleased that he had done well. “Tomorrow I have a test before Christmas break. So, if you don’t mind, I’m going to head back to my room to finish studying before I head to bed.”
Felicity nodded, swiping the tears that seeped down away. “Don’t stay up too late.”
“I won’t,” William promised already retreating toward his room.
Felicity took a seat on one of the stools and carefully set the necklace back down in the box. She never expected to have such a great relationship with William, especially after the fiasco when Oliver tried to hide him and then send him away, all without Felicity’s input. It all worked out in the end, even though all of them would have loved for Samantha to still be in the picture, despite all the awkwardness that would have ensued. However, it would have meant the world to William for her to still be alive. And for that alone, Felicity wished things would have been different.
Opening a nearby drawer, Felicity pulled out a pair of scissors so she could open the larger box that lay before her. She’d have to ask Oliver to bring all the other decorations home at some later time. Plus, he’d probably want to go with William to pick out a Christmas tree.
Felicity finally had everything arranged and lit the first candle watching the flame flicker when she heard the front door open. Oliver was home.
She heard his feet shuffle around as he took off his coat and probably put both her and his shoes into the closet. Then he seemed to head towards William’s room to check up on him. She heard Oliver tell him good-night. His concern over his son was palpable even with him in a separate part of the house. And then he was there, next to her. Like he could sense exactly where she was the second he opened the door. His arms wrapped around her and she sunk into his embrace as his head rested atop her own.
“You got it out,” Oliver noted. His head seemed to bob in the direction of the menorah.
“William did.” She sighed and shifted slightly so she could look up at him. “Is it so bad that I forgot? I’ve never forgotten before.”
“No.” Oliver pulled her up and out of the chair and cradled her face. “It’s the pregnancy and the fact that you’ve been busy. You tried walking out of here the other day with no shoes and in your pajama bottoms.”
Felicity chuckled at the memory. She had. It was so sad.
Oliver kissed her gently and Felicity buried herself into his chest. He held her there and they both stared at the candlelight. “I thought about reminding you but you were so busy and then things got crazy and hectic with the meta-humans who showed up. It slipped my mind. I’m glad William remembered for you.”
“I am too.” Felicity understood why Oliver had forgotten as well. He had a lot on his plate as well. Oliver was in his second term as Mayor. And with him also leading the team at night, he barely had any spare time. What time he did have, he spent making sure William was happy and that Felicity was taken care of.
“But, I did manage to get this.” Oliver slipped an envelope into her hand. “Happy Hanukkah, Felicity.”
“What’s this?” Felicity stared up at him instead of looking inside. Apparently even Oliver had managed to sneak out and grab something all the while she had been completely oblivious to the fact the holidays had even arrived.
Oliver smiled down at her and wrapped his arm around her burgeoning waist. “Just fulfilling a promise.”
“Really?” Felicity glanced down at the envelope and began to open it. He mouth fell open when she pulled out a couple of tickets. Plane tickets to Bali. “Bali? You do realize that I’m about to have a baby, right?”
“They’re open ended tickets. I still owe you a proper anniversary gift. And I talked to my sister and you mom and both have agreed to take the kids the second we’re ready to leave.” Oliver turned her so that she faced him and slid the tickets from her hands to place them on the counter. “I love you, Felicity. I will always love you. Happy Hanukkah, honey.”
Felicity cried, no she balled, even as she kissed him. For a holiday she managed to forget about, it ended up being one that she would remember forever.
Then, the holidays became even more spectacular a few days later when Felicity went into labor and her daughter was born on the last day of Hanukkah, the day after Christmas. Thomasina Moira Queen had decided to be there to share in all the special celebrations while everyone was still gathered together.
“Tommy always wanted to be a Queen,” Oliver told his little girl. “Now, through you, he gets to be.” Oliver hummed some sort of off-key song to the pink-wrapped bundle.
Felicity smiled softly despite the tiredness that invaded her to her very marrow. She wouldn’t have missed this moment for the world.
“You’re as beautiful as your mother.” Through rapidly closing eyes, Felicity saw Oliver wink at the newborn and lower his voice conspiratorially. “You might be a bit more beautiful, but don’t tell mommy.”
“I heard that,” Felicity murmured before letting out a jaw-cracking yawn.
“What?” Oliver tried to look innocent. It didn’t work.
“You told our daughter she’s more beautiful than me.”
Oliver walked over, carefully cradling their daughter, and sat next to Felicity. He gently swept a piece of hair from her face and studied her before a soft smile appeared. Leaning down, Oliver placed a kiss on her forehead and then her chapped lips. “I will always tell our daughter how special she is because she came from you. But never, never, believe that I don’t love you more than anything.” Oliver squeezed her hand and laid it over his rapidly beating heart. “This is yours forever.” He placed her hand back on her own chest. “Now get some rest, honey. I’m going to show the baby off to everyone waiting while you sleep.”
“Criminals must be having a field day,” Felicity whispered as she began to drift off. The entire vigilante team and majority of the mayoral staff all awaited meeting their daughter in the hospital’s waiting room.
“Let them,” Oliver told her. “Our daughter is much more important. We’ll get them tomorrow.” Oliver winked at her. “Sleep.”
           “Take care of her.”
A huge smile invaded Oliver’s face. It was the last thing Felicity saw before her eyes would no longer open. “Always.”

Hey this is your SS! just tag this with secretsanta and I'll be able to see your reply! I hear you want either a manipulation or a fic. IS there anything in particular you want? Christmas themed? Focused on the Queen family? Just Oliver and Felicity? A little more specifics would go a long way to personalizing your gift!
(Sorry for the late reply! Looooong day at work.)Hi, SS!! Yes, I said fic or manip, so whatever you feel more comfortable with ^_^. I’ll leave it up to you whether you want to make it holiday themed or not :-). But with how lovely S6 is going, I’m feeling all the fluffy, family feels. So, Olicity + family would be lovely :-). (Also, if this strikes your muse: Oliver + baby is giving me SUPER feels right now. Daddy!Oliver is adorable.)Thank you for reaching out, I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Fabulous Olicity Fanfic Friday - December 29th, 2017
Tumblr media
Happy Friday! So this is my attempt to both thank awesome fanfic writers for their amazing work and offer my recommendations to anyone who is interested. Here are the fantastic fanfic stories I read this week! They are posted in the order I read them. OSS2017 are the Olicity Secret Santa entries I’ve read so far. Thanks so much to @green-arrows-of-karamel, @tdgal1 and @smkkbert for organizing another successful year! Happy New Year to all!
Light a Fire by @smoaking-greenarrow - Set between seasons 5 and 6, so not exactly holiday-esque. It’s a bit angsty, actually. I’m sorry, I feel like you were looking for cute, anon. This just happened. Felicity tells Oliver about her experience when the island exploded, but there’s a fire and a cold Felicity and snugglin! Hope you enjoy!! https://archiveofourown.org/works/13095513
Technical Assistance multi-chapter by @thatmasquedgirl - Felicity Smoak swore she'd provide technical assistance to all who need it.   She's just not prepared for her newest client. A story that shows another way Felicity and Oliver could have met.  Each chapter contains a bonus scene at the end.  Olicity undertones, with a definite slow burn.  Originally started as a one-shot of the same name. Complete. http://archiveofourown.org/works/1359190/chapters/2838451
Making Merry - An Olicity Holiday Story by multi-chapter by @quiveringbunny - Oliver Queen finds himself roped into helping his sister during the holidays. http://archiveofourown.org/works/12995670/chapters/29715414
The Christmas Con multi-chapter by @spaztronautwriter - In order to convince his parents and his ex that he’s changed, Oliver Queen hires a stranger to be his girlfriend for the holidays. Felicity Smoak is as far from his type as possible, with her dark hair and attitude problem, but a bottle of hair dye and a new wardrobe—not to mention the money he’s promised—can do wonders, and if he plays his cards right this whole thing might actually work. http://archiveofourown.org/works/13116201/chapters/30006585
12 Days of Christmas by melicitysmoak - This Arrow/Olicity one-shot is set after the heart-breaking ending of the Mid-Season 4 Finale episode “Dark Waters.” It’s my version of what happens in the twelve days following Christmas day when Felicity survives the ambush and lies sleeping in a coma in the hospital. Oliver doesn't run off chasing after ghosts to find Damien Darkh and make him pay.  (That story arc bothered me a lot back then.)  Instead, he stays close to Felicity, hoping each day that she would wake up. The story revolves around a simple yet sincere exchange of “love” gifts for the holidays between them. He speaks, and she shows him that she’s listening. http://archiveofourown.org/works/13106157
Cold December Night multi-chapter by @sparkleannie -  OSS2017 AU, College AU, Fluff, friends to lovers, pink snuggies are a thing, whipped cream is involved, pet names, teeth rotting fluff  https://olicitysecretsanta.tumblr.com/post/168873077231/cold-december-night

Love and Little Cupcakes multi-chapter by @xtina-lynn  - Felicity loved sweets so much that she paid no attention to her love life. Until Thea Queen came into her store wanting fabulous cupcakes for her sixteenth birthday. http://archiveofourown.org/works/12400539/chapters/28216053

December 24, 2017
"Merry Christmas, Auntie Thea!"
If Oliver’s sister Thea was in any way startled by the way her nephew launched himself at her or his son’s enthusiastic greeting after he opened the door, there was no sign of it on her face. Instead, Oliver could see she was all grins as she wrapped her arms around William. “Merry Christmas!” she replied. She took a step back and breathed deeply. “Your dad’s been busy cooking?”
William nodded. “There’s more than enough food for Christmas Eve dinner tonight, and for Christmas tomorrow. Are you really spending the night tonight? Dad said you were. Oh--I should go help him some more. He was going to teach me how to properly mash potatoes.”
“And you don’t want to miss that,” Thea said. She followed William into the kitchen, where she greeted Oliver with a kiss on the cheek. “Merry Christmas, Ollie. If only the bad guys could see you now.”
“They might be very intimidated by my chocolate souffles,” Oliver retorted, setting down a spoon and wrapping Thea in a hug. “Hi, Speedy. Glad you could make it. Just drop your bag anywhere and I’ll take it to your room after.”
Thea set it down, along with the bag of presents she’d been carrying. “You’re not going to make me help in the kitchen, too, are you? Because I should warn you now, I think you got all the cooking skills in the family.”
“Found it!” Felicity emerged from their bedroom with a wine corkscrew held triumphantly overhead. She greeted Thea with an embrace. “And no, we’re leaving the men to cook while we start in on this incredible bottle of wine I can now open.” She made quick work of the cork, then poured two glasses, leaving a third wine glass empty for now.
They both settled in at the counter, talking about everything and nothing as they sipped at their wine. Oliver went back to cooking, trying not to look up too often at his little sister and his wife interacting. He still felt like the last month was something out of a dream, from his sister waking up from her coma to Barry and Iris’s wedding (and all that entailed) to Felicity asking him to marry her right there in the park to celebrating it with their friends and family. There had been plenty of negatives, too--his arrest and the team breaking up being the two major negatives--but overall, for the first time in a very long time, Oliver had everything that he wanted in his life.
He could really get used to this foreign feeling of contentment.
He was good to his promise to teach William how to mash the perfect potatoes. Oliver had been worried that both Christmas and his sudden elopement would cause William to return to the brooding boy he’d been those first five months after his mother’s death. But William absolutely adored Felicity, and once Felicity had encouraged Oliver to just talk with William about any Christmassy things he used to do with his mom that he wanted to keep doing, Oliver had felt a lot better about the whole situation. And while William had been unsure about doing some Christmas activities without his mom, he had offered up a few things that Oliver had been more than happy to incorporate into their Christmas season.
Oliver had also promised to introduce William to two Christmas traditions that Oliver kept. Those would be happening after dinner. William asked about them again as they were bringing the food to the table, while Felicity and Thea joined them and set their wine glasses down. Thea jumped right in with a story about how both the traditions had started before Oliver even had a chance to open his mouth. He didn’t mind at all; he was grateful for how easily Thea had taken to the role of aunt to his son.
Oliver went to get the last dish of food, and he caught Felicity standing back a little and smiling at nothing. He stepped closer to her and raised an eyebrow in question. She laughed softly. “I was just remembering what happened that time I asked you about your holiday traditions.”
He frowned for a moment, trying to recall what she was talking about--these days, so much of what had happened in those first months and years after the island felt like it had happened to someone else entirely. But as he remembered exactly what had happened, he grinned in response. “I thought you were insane. Adorable, but insane.”
“You mean determined,” she corrected, leaning up for a kiss. Oliver happily gave her one. She wrapped her arms around his neck as she pulled away. “I wanted you to see that you could have happy memories again.”
“I should have realized even then that you were my happy story,” Oliver said softly. Felicity rewarded him with another kiss, which was interrupted only when Thea cleared her throat loudly.
“Save it for after dinner, newlyweds. I’m starving.”
Both Oliver and Felicity smiled and broke apart. Oliver went to get the last dish of food, Felicity poured him a glass of wine, and before long they were all digging into their Christmas Eve dinner.
Five years earlier
Felicity was right.
Nobody was paying any attention to Oliver Queen, CEO of Queen Consolidated, or why he was having drinks with his bodyguard and his personal assistant. Nobody was paying attention to much of anything beyond themselves in the restaurant; the Christmas music was cranked up and there were several Christmas dinner parties going on. Nobody noticed the three of them dressed casually and seated in the bar area.
It was a nice restaurant, but not one he typically frequented. The reason he even knew about it was because he'd come here with John and Felicity after the first mission she'd worked out in the field with them. The Dodger case. Felicity had been visibly shaken up after having a bomb collar around her neck and joked about going out for margaritas. At the time, John and Oliver had exchanged a quick look and agreed to a drink, mostly to keep an eye on her and make sure she was really okay. So tonight, when they had wrapped things up in the Foundry and Felicity had cajoled the two of them into drinks to celebrate Oliver's safe return from facing Cyrus Gold, they ended up back at that same spot.
Felicity was two margaritas in when the conversation took a turn Oliver hadn’t expected.
"What are your favorite holiday traditions?" she asked, looking between John and Oliver.
John already had his beer to his mouth, which left Oliver wide open to answer. But even as he took a breath to speak, he found a warm finger pressed against his lips, and the scent of Felicity filling his personal space. He had grown very familiar with that scent in the last few months, working with her as his personal assistant, and warning bells were going off in his brain as he struggled not to focus on how nice her finger felt against his lips--or how very blue her eyes looked behind her glasses right now.
He was enough caught up in his struggle that he almost didn't hear her command. " Don't say mistletoe. We already know all about the beautiful island girls on fantasy island."
Oliver blinked in confusion, not at all helped by John's snort of laughter. He pulled back from her finger, narrowing his eyes as he tried to figure out what she just said. "What?"
She waved her hand, as if physically brushing off her comment. "If it's all about kissing, I don't want to hear about it. That's all. So what are your favorite holiday traditions, that don't include kissing?"
John was still chuckling, which left Oliver no less confused about her fantasy island comment. But he pushed aside that concern for now--writing it off as the tequila talking--and answered how he had originally meant to answer. "Candy canes."
"What do you mean, candy canes?" Felicity asked, squinting her eyes at him in concentration. "That doesn't even make sense."
Oliver shrugged. He wasn't used to opening up, and just a few weeks ago he'd already had to tell John and Felicity about Sara Lance surviving the shipwreck. But it wasn't just anybody asking. The determined blonde who, just a few hours ago had told him he "looked like a hero" when he put on a mask, was staring him down.
"My sister and I, we always would race each other to see who could finish the candy canes first," Oliver explained. He felt himself relaxing a little into the topic as he spoke. Felicity had a way of bringing that out in him, without even trying. “And then we would watch It’s a Wonderful Life until we’d both fall asleep. I think we both finally made it to the end the year she turned twelve.” That was the last Christmas they’d had together, before the island. Oliver didn’t mention that part out loud, knowing it would instantly dampen the mood.
Felicity stared at him for a long moment, long enough that Oliver found himself shifting nervously in his seat. Without comment, she finished the rest of her margarita and waved for their waitress. "We're ready for our checks," she said without asking John or Oliver.  “We have someplace else to be.”
The two men exchanged a glance as they drained the rest of their beers. “Where are we going?” Oliver ventured to ask.
“You’ll see,” she replied with a pleased smile. She refused to say anymore as they paid their bills.
As they were leaving the restaurant, John muttered, “I’m glad I didn’t mention any of my holiday traditions.”
Five stops later and Felicity was clearly losing her tequila buzz. Her determination had only intensified.
“Does nobody in Starling City carry regular candy canes anymore?” she lamented as the three of them got back into the car after a quick trip through the Christmas treat section at the drug store. “How hard can it be? Candy canes seem to be a pretty basic part of the Christmas culture. Is there really a need for trendy flavors like tropical punch and Jelly Belly candy canes?”
“You did almost buy the chocolate mint ones,” John pointed out as he started the car.
Felicity ignored his comment. “There’s nothing else for it,” she said. “We’re going to have to steal them.”
“Felicity--” Oliver had been amused when this had all started--and in a way, deeply flattered that Felicity’s single minded mission since they had left the restaurant was to find a box of peppermint candy canes. But there was a line between ‘fun’ and ‘doing what the bad guys do’, and Felicity was announcing that she was crossing it.
Unfortunately, she ignored Oliver as easily as she’d ignored John’s comment moments before. “John, can you take us to QC?”
“Forget something at the office?” he asked as he made the turn back towards the city center.
“Every year since I was hired at QC, somebody brings in a stack of candy cane boxes and puts them in the break room on the IT floor. So we’re going to help ourselves to a few of those boxes,” she said with a nod, her long ponytail swishing back and forth.
Oliver relaxed a little at the explanation of their destination. “Is it really stealing if we’re taking it from work?”
“Technically, I don’t work for the IT department anymore,” Felicity pointed out. A familiar look came into her eyes, and Oliver could sense another (well-deserved) rant was about to come his way for putting her in as his personal assistant if he didn’t divert it quickly.
“Let’s hope they have the right flavor,” he said. He smiled slightly. “Or we may end up stuck with those green apple ones we just saw.”
“No, if we’re going green, we’re getting the chocolate mint ones,” she said before her eyes widened. “Oh. Did you want green ones?”
“No, I really do prefer the peppermint,” he assured her. “I don’t need everything to be green.” He looked out the window for a moment to see the QC building getting closer. “What’s the plan when we get there?”
He saw Felicity’s confusion written across her face. “Plan?”
“Yes, plan,” he said, turning to face her more. “Your mission. So you get to make the plan.”
“Oliver Queen, are you learning to share?” she asked. She looked very pleased with this turn of events.
He smiled slightly before he said, “Don’t get used to it.”
She laughed and worked on laying out a simple, straightforward plan by the time they reached the Queen Consolidated building.
Oliver waited uneasily outside the IT break room for Felicity. She had insisted that she go in alone. “It will take me two minutes, Oliver,” she told him with a roll of her eyes. “I can handle it.”
So since he had agreed to let her be in charge of “the plan”, here he was, feeling out of place and exposed in the company he technically ran.
He was just about to go in after Felicity--she had been in there for nearly five minutes and he could here her muttering under her breath--when he heard a male voice.
“What are you doing?”
Oliver was on high alert and already moving to the door.
“I’m taking the last box of regular candy canes,” came Felicity’s matter of fact reply. “There are still plenty of other flavors. Though why anybody would want root beer candy canes--”
“These are for the IT department, from the IT managers. And your badge says you’re a personal assistant, not from IT.”
Oliver stepped into the room and tried for his most charming smile. “Is there a problem here? Ms. Smoak, did you find the candy canes I needed?”
The man Felicity had been talking to had turned to face Oliver, and his eyes widened as he recognized him. “Mr. Queen. What brings you down to IT this late at night?”
“I needed a box of regular candy canes. Ms. Smoak--my personal assistant--recalled that there are typically too many boxes of candy canes left in the IT break room, and offered to retrieve them for me. I see that she’s been successful. Thank you,” Oliver said to Felicity, then turned back to the IT employee. “Don’t let us keep you from anything you’re working on.”
“No, Mr. Queen. I was just getting my lunch. I’m the IT staffer on call tonight.” The man seemed embarrassed now that he recognized the CEO of the company was in the same room as him. “Enjoy your candy canes, sir.”
“Thank you,” Oliver said, keeping his smile. He gestured for Felicity to go ahead of him, then said, “Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, Mr. Queen. And Ms. Smoak.”
Oliver and Felicity made it all the way inside the elevator, where John was waiting, before Felicity started laughing. Oliver dropped the fake smile and cracked a real one before asking Felicity, “Maybe you should have gone for the green ones after all.”
John just looked at both of them, shook his head, and pressed the button for the parking garage.
“So why are we back here with our stolen candy canes?” John asked as Felicity set down her purse and coat.
“Because now that we have the candy canes...we have a movie to watch,” she said. She looked around the Foundry, then nodded towards the mats. “See if you can make some comfortable seating. I’ll work on the tech setup.”
John obediently started towards them, piling up some mats for the three of them to lean against, then going to find blankets and pillows Oliver had stashed in the Foundry. Oliver hung back with Felicity, who was muttering under her breath as she poked at her tablet.
“This whole thing--looking for candy canes and coming back here--it’s because of what I said at the restaurant?” Oliver asked.
Felicity looked up from her tablet, and for the first time all night looked uncertain. She was biting her lip in a very distracting way. “I don’t celebrate Christmas,” she said. “Hanukkah ended last week. But I thought--well, we deserve a little break. And you deserve a happier Christmas than you had last year.” She frowned. “You did say you do this with your sister. We can pick a different movie. I don’t want to step on your toes--”
“Fe-li-ci-ty.”
He said her name softly, but it did the trick. She stopped babbling and looked at him, waiting for his response.
“Thank you,” Oliver said. She blinked in surprise--had he ever told her that before? This particular occasion warranted it. Wanting to cut the tension of the moment--and the urge he had to just lean in and kiss her--he took the box of candy canes from the table where she had set it. “But I’m not taking it easy on you for the contest.”
“And here I thought you were a gentleman,” she replied. She smiled up at him, and he felt that urge to kiss her again. Luckily, the sound of John stacking another few mats up made Oliver look away, and the moment was gone. He headed over and settled next to John. Felicity joined them a few moments later, barefoot and with her hair down. She sat down on the other side of Oliver, then pressed a few buttons on her tablet and got the movie to start playing.
They went through the box of candy canes fairly quickly, and watched the movie with minimal commentary. Oliver felt the week catching up with him, his eyes growing heavy as he concentrated on the black and white movie. Both John and Felicity were settled in and quiet now as the movie played on.
The next thing Oliver became aware of were tingles from his left arm, and a soft warm weight pressed up against his left side. He blinked his eyes open, catching that George Bailey was staring down at the river, contemplating ending it all to make things better for his family. He heard soft snores from his right--John was fast asleep.
And so was Felicity, tucked up against Oliver and using him for a pillow.
He remained still, just looking at her. Her glasses were slightly askew, where she was pressed up against him; her hair was down, surrounding her face in soft waves. She looked peaceful, almost angelic as she slept on.
She deserved someone good, like the kid Barry Allen. She didn’t need to waste her time on someone broken like him, to spend a whole evening racing around the city trying to find the right kind of candy canes because he’d said it was his Christmas tradition.
She deserved better, and she shouldn’t waste time on him, but Oliver allowed himself these few minutes to memorize how easily she fit against him, how pleased she was on the ride back to the Foundry, how determined she had been to get the candy canes and the movie set up.
It was Christmas. He was allowed a few happy hours.
When he could no longer ignore the pins and needles in his left arm, he gently shifted her away from him, placing her head on his folded up grey sweatshirt. He carefully removed her glasses and set them in the empty box of candy canes, so they wouldn’t get broken. Then he shifted away, putting a little bit of space between them before he settled back down and watched the rest of the movie.

“I think he’s finally asleep,” Felicity murmured, her voice reverberating against Oliver’s chest. After dinner, they had all moved into the living room to watch It’s a Wonderful Life --which was only briefly interrupted by the annual candy cane eating contest. Felicity was snuggled up against him now, a warm spot on the cold night. He didn’t feel like shifting much, but all it took was a slight turn of his head and he could see that William’s eyes were indeed shut tightly as George Bailey made a mad dash to the library to see what had become of Mary in the world without George.
“He’s not the only one,” Oliver replied, nodding to where his sister had tucked herself into an armchair and was fast asleep. “I thought they’d never come down from their sugar highs.”
“You make it sound like we have two children in the house,” Felicity said with a sleepy laugh. “But you were participating just as diligently in that candy cane eating contest, mister.”
“A tradition is a tradition,” he said. He lightly brushed his fingers down Felicity’s arm. “That first Christmas I was back, Thea brought a box of candy canes to the hospital. It was an olive branch. For the first time since I returned from the island, I felt like an old part of me was back. But a good old part of me. Not the foolish irresponsible kid I was. But a big brother, sharing a tradition with his little sister.” He smiled softly. “And this year, I’m sharing it with my son and my wife.”
Felicity found his left hand, gently tracing along the cool metal ring that Oliver was still hyper aware of, after a little less than a month wearing it. “Talk about unthinkable. You and me.”
“You changed my life from the moment I walked into your office and you told me you knew who I was,” Oliver countered, taking her hand and wrapping his fingers through it. “It was never an easy road. But we made it here.”
“A quiet family Christmas,” she said with a smile before yawning and snuggling back into his chest. “I love you, Mr. Smoak.”
A wide grin came across Oliver’s face, a deep contentment and peace filling his soul. When he’d returned from Lian Yu, he never would have been able to imagine anything like this. He never thought he would deserve anything like this. But bit by bit, hard learned lesson by hard learned lesson, he’d moved from the broken man who left the island to the man he was today. Brother. Father. And husband to the incomparable Felicity Smoak. “I love you, Mrs. Queen.”
“No, Mrs. Queen was my mother-in-law,” came the sleepy response. Oliver chuckled, keeping her hand wrapped in his until he drifted off to sleep to the strains of Auld Lang Syne, the lights of the Christmas tree twinkling and catching on the unwrapped cellophane from the candy cane boxes still strewn across the living room.
