The first comic takes place before the two started dating. Shrimpo is really really really bad at expressing emotions other than anger and frustration, so anytime he tries to express anything, he just blurts out his feelings without thinking. Then he gets second-hand embarrassment lol. Glisten was pretty aware that Shrimpo liked him before, but he's pretending to be surprised to make Shrimpo "feel better" (also to mildly embarrass him lol).

Also, I think that Shrimpo and Glisten bonding over hating Finn is very based and true. They need that autistic man to SHUT UP/silly

I think Shrimpo and Finn are very cousin coded. Not close enough to be siblings but definitely got some familial genes going on imo (plz don't shoot me Shrimpbowl shippers🙏🙏🙏) Doesn't stop Shrimpo from being violent towards Finn tho, and Finn does nothing to deter it lol (he finds it funny). I love you angst comfort. My sib pointed out while playing one day that Shrimpo looked traumatized as a Twisted, which like, fair, but it make me think.

Glisten: "They say you are not here anymore. But I think you are."

I had this silly idea that Twisted Shrimpo was infected by Dandy personally, and that whole conflict got Shrimpo's lower jaw ripped off. He is very violent and volatile, and very hard to calm down. But, when he runs into a twisting Glisten alone and scared, he comforts him (to the best of his ability).

Since Glisten is still able to be somewhat conscious, he realizes that the Twisteds are actually not completely gone like he originally thought, and it helps him keep his sanity longer, hoping for a way out for everyone.

Willpower is a crazy thing.

On the complete opposite note, I love you horrifying freak of ichor child.

Since Shimmer was made from the ichor itself with no sort of skeleton or solid foundation, her condition is very unstable. And the problem is that her body is affected by her emotions. On a bad day, she can suffer from lots of pain and her body literally melting away. That's when she hides out and waits for her body to stabilize again.

When she completely twists, her body completely falls apart, becoming a puddle of ichor on the ground. If she was an encounterable twisted, she would work like Sprout's puddle root things, but easier to maneuver around and avoid. Also, her antenna glow.

Craig would get famous for his acting purely because of how neutral and nonchalant he is all of the time. He’s like THE dreamboat, suit n tie man that all the fangirls drool for. Too bad he’s gay lmfaoo

Tweek is always casted as the ‘outcast’ character that diverges from society and lives in a shack and is super powerful (and also probably owns a tarot deck and acts as a prophet) OR as the lead in a highschool drama show that gets put through hell, like no in between loll

Marj is your typical cutesy, cottagecore dressing band member that literally has an army of fangirls to back her up during any controversy. She’s also recognised as one of the only mainstream transgender music artists and models. She’s often asked to come onto talk shows!! How I feel about this character

Gus is so fucking cool, man. I love him!! I especially like his characterization in season 1 as a really cutesy silly geeky little fellow with a surprisingly morbid streak. Like season 1 Gus is probably the funniest character in the show to me. They definitely toned down his chaos a bit in later seasons, but his transition into something more than a supporting comic relief character was also good stuff to chew on.

I find Gus, as he's written in the show itself, to be a character who lacks a solid foundation. Even though I personally enjoy him a lot, it often felt like the crew was struggling to find his emotional core. What makes Gus tick yknow. At least that's the vibe I got from Gus centric episodes where they give him a new complex every time. They knew he was insecure deep down but it was like they couldn't decide on the reason WHY. First they tried "being younger than everyone is hard", then it was "my area of magical expertise isn't taken seriously" and then finally "I'm way too trusting."

I'm not saying he can't be a complex character with MULTIPLE insecurities. I just feel like the writing in this regard is kinda weak in terms of consistency. It really did feel like they just kept introducing new Gus angst every time and forgetting about the Gus angst they had already established. I would have liked to see it all weave together instead, yknow?

Overall Gus is fantastic. I love Gus. When it comes to how the character was ultilized, they might have flopped a bit. But yknow. Gus has potential to be SO interesting. All the ingredients are there. So he's a lot of fun to play with. So much to build and expand on. He is the brightest most neon shade of blue putty.

I kinda like aroace Gus. Idk if that's an unpopular opinion tho. But I don't really have a solid headcanon for his orientation, so sometimes I see him as bi and kissing that one guy. And sometimes he is aroace.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

MAN!!! I've made multiple posts about stuff that I wish they did with Gus in canon. I'll try to briefly repeat a few of them

- I wish Gus and Eda were familiar with each other before Luz came into the picture. Like the Owl Lady who sells human junk and the little witch boy who's obsessed with human junk.

- I wish Gus' fixation on the human realm was used as a parallel for Luz' fixation on the fantasy genre. I wish it was used as the thing that helped them to understand each other. Two kids who feel like a bit of an outsider in their own world and use their obsession with another realm as a form of escapism.

- I wish Gus had an arc involving Grometheus.

- I wish Gus had played a role in the finale. Specifically I wish his problem with trusting too easily had been brought up again and tied into the situation with Belos, who sits on a thrown of lies. Would have been fun. But what do I know

That being said. I wish people realized or at least understood that shipping something that isn't "healthy" means the person thinks this is good or okay. Its the same mentality people have with "if you shoot in game u must want to hurt people irl" and its like...no. When i talk of characters/ships like David x Simon, Clancy x Lucas, or Woods x Hackett/Dauda x Bishop, i think its interesting to dive into a relationship that isn't healthy or good for a character. In these characters the characters knows and understands that this love is unhealthy and hurts/destroys them but does it anyway out of this soft like devotion they have. They know what they have going on is wrong, i do not make this to be they're obvious and its just cutesy fun stuff!! They know and understand that it hurts them.

Simon is well aware that loving David breaks him but he's scared to lose someone that made him feel like maybe there could be a place made for him. That David wants to give something to Simon they know they can't? But does it regardless because it feels nice. Do you not think Clancy didn't think about the outcome of loving Lucas? That he was loving someone sick but did it anyway not to fix him but because he couldn't help but find the scenario almost comical. How someone who wanted him in pain would get distraught of the thought of losing his victim. He plays into it. Do you not think Woods not understand that he should not love Hackett because it feeds into a obsessive devotion? But Hackett wanted to feel like something he wasn't so he found himself entangled by the corrupt love handed to his scarred hands.

That is not to say these characters can never have a soft moment or love each other without pain. Their love is not complete misery. They have warm moments of laughing and cuddling closer to the other. They stand fingers intertwined as they watch the sun and the moon carefully walk around.

Love is complex, it can be very ugly but also tragically beautiful. Ig when i hear people say you cant ship xyz because "it makes you a bad person!!!" Mentality it pisses me off because relationships [of any kind] can be horrific and shitty, they can be twisted and messy, they're characters built to be human. They make mistakes they feed into their own greed they scrap for something they've been wanting for decades. They can be aware they scare the other but can't stop themselves. Ik in the act of shipping it comes across as tho i support their actions but...this is fictional. Its not real. I support their actions in a fictional view because if one really wanted to dissect their lover and keep everything from the inside irl that be a little scary, but in a fictional world fuckin go wild.

The same goes for relationships we already see in media. Looks kindly at Mia and Ethan. Eye twitches their love will never be perfect but they love each other regardless because who else is left to understand the scars they have without having to speak?

Heya! I saw you replied to my post about queer Twilight Fanfiction and ships and I wanted to ask for the most popular ships and if you have FanFic Recommendations, I really want to get into it!

Hey! I'm probably not the best person to answer this question because I am singularly obsessed with my unpopular Edythe Cullen headcanon/ shipping her with Bella, but I'll try to answer your q to the best of my ability and maybe others who are more into the vast milieu of queer twilight can get you started in the replies/reblogs.

So the most common female pairings are Bella ships, either bellice (Alice Cullen and Bella) or Rosalie x Bella (idk what the cutesy name for that is) and the most popular male ships are Jacob x Edward, Charlie x Carlisle and Carlisle x Aro. I think Jacob x Paul is kinda common but I haven't seen it too much recently cuz there's a bit of an age gap which is not popular in the fandom atm.

There's also the gender swap options from Life and Death, which is pretty convenient for queering stuff up. I think the most common instances of that are Edythe/Bella and Edward/Beau but I'm sure you could dive deep.

This isn't even mentioning self-insert and OC pairings which I'm not into but you might be and that's awesome. Original masculine characters are most often paired with Edward, Jacob, and Jared and feminine characters are most often paired with Bella, Rosalie, or Alice.

There are also lots of Genderqueer and trans headcanons that I've seen which I will list briefly here: Characters that are frequently headcannoned as binary trans: Edward, Bella, Edythe, Beau, Rosalie. Thank you for the question! Funnily enough, this is one I’ve answered before on my deleted account… though I only managed to save the sketch I did for it and not the response. I’m more than happy to answer it again, though! Let’s see…

Well, to start, Magolor is a big favorite of mine. Love that duplicitous little egg with all his big dreams and secrets behind that friendly façade. I got real obsessed with him after playing through KRtDLDx last year, seeing a whole new side of him thanks to the Epilogue (even wrote some fic during that time). It’s fun to think about all the different masks he wears and what he hides underneath them, the words he speaks versus the thoughts he feels, the layers that comprise him. He’s a character who’s experienced growth, who remains largely the same personality-wise but gains a newfound appreciation for friendship and kindness, from self-interested to… well, still self-interested, but with a genuine desire to bring joy to others. That said, I also like when he’s a snickering little bastard, cunning and prideful and smarter than half the people in the room with him (or so he believes). I like when he’s a monster gloating over his stolen victory; I like when he’s a sad wet cat picking up the pieces after his failure; I like when he’s himself again in the falling leaves of his redemption, exhausted and trembling but changed, ready to try again. All-in-all, I just think he’s neat. He’s silly and fun and complicated, and I want to shove him in the microwave and watch him spin (affectionate).

The same goes for Marx. Stars, I love this shitty little clown. Wanna punt him like a football. He was a fav from a while back, a character my nephew and I used to bond over all the time for our mutual appreciation of terrible jesters. I love his chaos, his manic joy, his deceptive nature - another case of sweet-and-friendly exterior hiding the twisted truth beneath. I love that he might’ve had history with the Animal Friends. I love that Kirby is still happy to see him despite everything he did. And, by Nova, is he a joy to write! Getting that perfect balance of silly li’l memelord and smarter-than-he-lets-on trickster is so much fun, especially when he has others to work off of (like a certain lying wizard, for example). Also, his wings are so stupid and perfect for him, and I love/hate them.

Then there’s my boy Meta Knight, another longtime fav, going back as far as my teen years, I think. I’ve always loved characters like him - cool, mysterious, fierce, a little edgy, a drop of darkness in an otherwise cutesy setting (no, you can’t prove I had a vampire phase or a Shadow-the-hedgehog phase, shut up). More than appearances, though, his character and dynamics with others is what really fascinates me. The rivalries-turned-friendships, his bonds with his crew, the grudges he holds, his presence (or lack of one) during a crisis, his ambitions and the journeys they take him on… for a character who speaks so little (at least in the games), his actions and the context around them speak volumes. Wonderful little knight. Secretive little container of multitudes, strong and stoic and not always in the right, but still good at heart. I give him a little pat on the head and tuck him in next to his king. Also, I thank him every day for getting me to study real bat wings - now his can look even cooler when I draw them.

And that goes double for my most recent fav, Dark Meta Knight. Canonically, this boy has almost nothing going for him beyond being the edgier version of MK, and while that’s great, I really didn’t think much of him at first. But then I discovered fandom stuff about him, and the Wave 2 gang, and the Darkroach ship, and now he lives in my head on spin-cycle. Being such a blank slate means he’s prime real estate for narrative, all my speculation and headcanons gettin’ slapped across that little edgelord’s stupid scarred face, and no one can stop me, hehe. I love thinking about him in relation to MK, what connects them and what separates them - honor versus dishonor, chivalry versus cruelty, a shared sense of stubbornness and pride, a ruthless desire to win at all costs. I love thinking about his relationships to the Mirror World, Shadow Kirby, or his own dark king. What ambitions does he have? Where do his loyalties lie? I love thinking about his brief appearance in KTD, wondering if what happened to Joronia was truly his intention or just a side effect of his rage. I love thinking about the unlikely friendship between him and Adeleine, Ribbon, and Daroach. How did that come about? What misadventures do they get up to together? What do they talk about? I love thinking about the fact that, despite everything, he still answered the call when Kirby summoned him in KSA, still joined the rest of the Star Allies and defeated the Void itself of the sake of the universe. Ugh. Damn this lad. He ping-pongs in my brain all day and night, to the point where I’m writing a whole friggin’ AU about it. Seriously, so many notes, 100k+ words in that file. Send help.

To cap off all the knight talk, we can’t leave out my boy Galacta Knight. Wretched fallen angel as radiant as he is terrifying, a powerhouse with the best theme in the whole series, a monster, a mystery, even something of a meme at this point. The ambiguity of this lad feeds me, the various takes and interpretations everyone seems to have of him, from betrayed hero to slick sociopath to vacuous monster to bumbling dork. He is potential, he is ambition unchecked, he is an age long dead and kept locked in a time capsule of tourmaline, Ancient in more than once sense. I do hate drawing his wings, though, despite how lovely they are.

There are countless others, of course - Adeleine, my very first favorite from my very first Kirby game; Kirby, for who couldn’t love everything about him, even his flaws; Daroach and his merry band of found-family misfits; Drawcia, lost, lonely, long gone mad, escaping into her art and taking everyone with her; our brave little ball of sunshine and hope, Bandana Waddle Dee; King Dedede and his own journey from antagonist to ally; the determined zealotry of Dark Matter Blade and the red gaze of his god; and so many more - but I think I’ve gone on long enough for now. Maybe I'll talk about them more in the future if anyone's curious. Hopefully, this all made sense (rambles like these can get away from me sometimes, haha). If you couldn't tell, this series means a great deal to me, its myriad of interesting set pieces and memorable characters all living in the nooks of my heart like keepsakes, little joys to look at and turn over and think about when I need them. I’m constantly discovering new things to love about this series, and I hope to discover more in the future, especially being here with so many others who feel the same. 💛

SPY x FAMILY CODE: White Review

Ugh. I don't like anime. I can't really justify why, because things I don't like about anime is also found in stuff I like, like superhero comics or kaiju movies. There was already an anime movie in our theater. It was called Dragon Slayer or Demon Slayer or something, either way I didn't watch it because I haven't seen the anime. I haven't seen the SPY x FAMILY anime either, but I have read the manga. It's something that I can only read in very small bursts, but I do keep up with it. So I have no excuse to not watch this movie. I watched the sub version, but keep in mind I'd still complain about the voice acting in the dub.

What's The Movie About?

For convoluted reasons, a spy needs a fake family for a mission. He adopts a little girl who is psychic, fakes a marriage with an assassin, and they adopt a dog who can see the future. For other convoluted reasons, the family takes a vacation up north.

Honestly, if you don't already know the premise of the show, don't watch the movie. Not that you won't understand what is happening, it is pretty straightforward. But there are plenty of minor elements and character dynamics it skips over because the movie expects that the only people watching are people who've seen the series.

What I Like.

So the set-up of SPY x Family is really good. The main characters are great, and the idea of an entire family with each member having a major secret is a really good comedy premise. And the movie is just playing the greatest hits really. Do you like the joke where Yor is freakishly strong and no one seems to notice? They have that joke. Do you like the joke that Nightfall is obviously in love with Twilight and he doesn't notice? They have that joke. Do you like the joke of Anya mispronouncing every other word? What is wrong with you?

I will admit, I was down on the movie until the ending. The ending is pretty awesome, real damn fun, and gorgeously animated. It's almost always balls-to-the wall action, and all of the action looks really cool. The way they showcase motion is incredibly impressive. To be frank, I was barely paying attention until the climax started, then I was grinning. Every family member gets several moments to shine as well, it's incredibly fun. Yor fights a cyborg from Wolfenstein, it's amazing.

What I Didn't Like.

This movie takes a while to get going. In fact, the first half of the movie is really random. Part of the reason why is because they want to showcase every minor character in the series for at least a second, and part of it is because they are trying to be a showcase of every story beat the series pulls. Subplots kinda just come out of nowhere and resolve themselves are weird moments, never to be mentioned again. And the comedy, for me personally, is very hit and miss. The tone itself is hit or miss as well, thinking about it. One second we'll be focusing on the wacky side character obsessed with fortune-telling, then that wacky side character has a serious conversation about CUTTING OPEN A CHILD, then there is a hallucination sequence involving a poop god. All back to back. My final two criticisms are incredibly personal, and I don't know how many people will agree with me. One, I find Anya's voice annoying. I don't usually find how character's sound that bothersome. (Gurgy from the Black Cauldron doesn't bother me at all, actually. Neither does Jar Jar.) But for some reason she does. I think it's the combination of the volume of her voice with her "cutesy" way for talking. Two, THE MOVIE KEPT TEASING ME WITH MY SHIP. I, like many other fans I suspect, want Loid and Yor to end up together for real. They are, as the bards of the interwebs say, OTP. If they actually end up together I suspect it won't be until the end of the series. If it turns out something else, I would be sad but not disappointed I suppose. But I could do without all the almost kissing and getting intimate until Yor punches Loid and all of that kind of thing. It feels like being at a busy restaurant while starving, seeing the server heading towards your table with a tray of food, but them turning the corner right when they should arrive at your table.

Final Summation.

Honestly, thinking back to my experience, I mostly just remember the finale. That finale is really fun! But I think I'd rather just watch it isolated on YouTube or something. Which isn't to say the rest of the movie is bad necessarily. I guess my recommendation come to this: If you like SPY x FAMILY, you will like this movie. If you've never seen the show, but are interested in the premise, maybe check out the movie to see if you'd be interested in delving deeper. Otherwise, there's more fun and interesting movie out right now.

Define age gap. I don't think I will actively look for it, regardless of age gap, but what kind of age gap does matter. Obviously, I am not fond of, for example, one of them being 16 and the other being 26, but one being 26 and the other 36? Sure. As I always say, it's not about the amount of years, but whether people are in a similar moment in life.

Codependency: +5

Okay, yeah, remember how fiction is all about exploring themes that would be a big no no in real life? This is one of them. I am such a sucker for fics that explore codependency, especially since it can be quite toxic or it can stem from, for example, of inadequacy which... give me ANGST.

Or also, what happens when people seem to be different in how much of themselves they want to give? Like, with Klaine, I am a big "Kurt needs to learn how to let people in and Blaine needs to learn to care for himself" truther.

Kinda same thing as what I wrote above, but somehow I am less interested in it. I like to explore it if it stems from some internal conflict. As Ashton said, Simon's jealousy come from his own insecurities and I eat that shit up, but I would never think it's a cutesy thing.

Yeah, sure. I like the idea that people compliment each other, but I also like the idea of having a lot in common. So I do like it, but I am not nuts about it.

I mean, it depends on what constitutes as enemies. If "enemies to lovers" is just being used as a way to have two terrible people forcibly end up together, then no thanks. It needs to make sense. It needs to show how people and the relationships evolve.

Enemies with benefits.... meh. Not really? Feels kinda weird to group these two categories together, since they're wildly different and I am just not into this one. Mostly. Sure. I mean, I do flail over Restoration Ecology by @captain-aralias. I cannot shut the fuck up about that fic and Simon thinks of Baz as his enemy so you know.

Offline, in real life, I am not opposed to poly stuff, and in media I am all for more poly rep, but I am just one of those people who cannot multiship for life. So it depends on whether the ship/character in question is already poly, if that makes sense. Hm. Mixed bag, mostly since, like fake dating, it has become such a been there done that thing in my head. Oh, the world becomes colourful! Oh, you can write on your body and it shows up on the other's body. Oh, tattoos of your lover's first words! Oh, red string! (I keep saying I do want to write a soulmate fic where I fuck with these ideas, but idk how yet.)

So I don't actively click on it, but that being said, I love fics that throw what we know of soulmate fics out of the window or give their own spin to it. The Check, Please! fandom has some really good ones, especially with the angst potential of Jack "dying" in 2009. A really good one is i'll see you with your laughter lines, also written by @alphacrone. If you want a less angsty one, Those Tangled Olive Threads of Fate by @mcbangle is a hilarious way to fuck with the "red string" trope.

Since you recently finished watching it, how would you improve class of titans?

WELL I think the show suffered really badly from having to stick to the status quo. Things couldn't significantly or noticably change til the end of the series which really doesn't work for a show like this - like, I'm still confused about what happened with Cronus in the middle of season 2. They captured him but then no they didn't and he's out? I felt like I'd missed an episode or two somewhere lol

So overall writing a coherent story for the show to follow would've been nice. Also more consistency on how the Gods are portrayed. I liked Theresa's anger in the finale but it came out of nowhere, it would've been really easy to build up to it. Everytime they have to fight a gods battle because of a terrible thing the gods did in the past, they should be upset about it, y'know? Who wants to fight someone else's battles.

Also I love that they had fun with the gods but I'm disappointed that they gave Zeus and Hera a cutesy romantic moment near the end. In the Christmas ep maybe? Anyway Hera should hate his cheating ass it's funnier for me

Cronus is a fun villain but what made me like him so much at the beginning was that he was charming and polite lol later on in the show he got meaner and maybe that's intentional but it just felt like they lost track of his personality

(which reminds me - the ep where everyone except Neil got amnesia? Probably the best ep of S2. I would've made that a double ep and continued the amnesia shenanigans for an excessively long time)

I would also redesign a lot of characters. Whoever did the character designs for this show seems to think all the Greek gods and their descendents have red hair. Like. There's less than 10 dark haired characters in the show, and I'm including every side character. That's stupid. The obsession with making everyone redheads or blondes is annoying.

Romance-wise, I think Jay and Theresa are fine but they could've had some more fun stories. I also sometimes felt like they were already dating and sometimes it seemed like she just had a one sided crush on him?

Archie and Atlanta were a nightmare ship for me. Everything I hate in a ship thrown together into a ball of bad writing. In the first ep where they talk about his crush, I 100% thought it was gonna stay one sided and Atlanta would be Without A Man since that's how shows portrayed lesbians back then lol (one of the characters said something like 'i don't think any guy has a chance with Atlanta' so I was hoping it'd be like the lesbian from Fred's Head) but noooo. Goddddddd they were so painful to watch. I would've gotten rid of that 'romance' and let Atlanta be gay (also Neil, though based on his midas touch ep I think it's possible that the writers were headed that way).

Archie as a whole needed an attitude adjustment. At first he was interesting and then they just had him get in fights with everyone on the team. Like...why is he in conflict with every single character? Maybe there should be an ep exploring his anger issues instead of making fun of his fear of water all the time. I think he suffered from Status Quo stuff cuz he could've been an interesting character. Nothing wrong with the angry guy who doesn’t trust anyone but his characterization was so inconsistent it was hard to keep up

That being said, a lot of the characters were inconsistent. Neil and Jay were the most consistent (except for Neil randomly bullying Odie in that S2 ep with the sphinx, i don’t remember Neil being a huge awful bully in any other ep?) but everyone else would occasionally just be all over the place. I think this is definitely due to the Status Quo problem...most of the problems in the show can be tied to the inability to develop your characters properly. 

Also back to character designs: there's no reason why Odie had to be the only character of color in the main cast. We're going back thousands of years and you're telling me only one of these kids ancestors ever had a baby with someone who wasn't white? Bad. Dumb. Also it's lame that none of the kids were Greek immigrants imo I know Jays mom is but why couldn't Jay be an immigrant too? Give him a lil accent and have him be fluent in Greek. Obv it’s not necessary but I think it would've been nice.

Okay I'm getting off track but that covers a lot of stuff I'd change. I really did enjoy S1 of the show and I felt like it had a lot of promise but then it just fell off the wagon. S2 had a lot of episodes that I struggled to get through 😔

Oh also Cassie! I would've introduced her earlier and had her be recurring cuz she could've been fun

Okay okay okay. Selkie au. Inspired by @gardenergulfie

Shelby is a Selkie and that's why she's so bad at conventional magic, the school only taught how to channel WITCH magic, which Shelby doesn't have.

But she can't tell the school, what if the word gets out and someone steals her coat? Then her grandma would never let her hear the end of it, and she'd be bound to the land. So she keeps it a secret, suffering through bad grades and scolding teachers to get any vague idea on how to get a handle on her very powerful (even by Selkie standards) magic.

And then she's shipped off to the Land of Empires. Where she meets a few... problems.

First she meets a pirate, which was one of the biggest threats her grandma warned her about. This pirate seemed interested in getting treasure himself rather than getting stuff to sell for gold, but Shelby doesn't forget the horror stories about pirates catching Selkies and selling their coats, impossible to find again.

Then she meets a... collector of sorts. Two, in fact, but the otherone calls himself an "archeologist". One is OBSESSED with magic and taking any magic items for himself, which no doubt extends to Shelby's coat. The other wants to learn and study and find out all the secrets about the other empires... and he'd definetly take an interest if he found out about Shelby.

And lastly... a MONSTER hunter. Sure she's nice and pretty and cutesy during the day, but Shelby has seen at night what the princess can and will do to anything that falls into her "monster" category. And no matter how close she wants to get to the hunter, her mind always reminds her what she might do if she found out about Shelby, taking her coat and displaying it, killing her.

But... all these people soon become Shelby's friends. It's strange... she never had friends back home. And they tell her everything. The collector about his eye, the pirate about the skeleton who wants him dead, even the hunter about her parents. Every passing day she feels more at home in the Evermoore, and every passing day she wants to tell her friends.

Until the letter comes.

And now Shelby is not. Supposed. To. Be. There. And the law wants her head. She locks her coat away, scared to go to the ocean incase she is seen. Cuz if someone asks her a question about it, she'll ramble and ramble until she slips up about getting expelled, and they'll take her coat and hand her over to the school.

And... what will the school do?! She's seen the horrors of the small creatures in the beast keeping class, what if they put her in there? Or worse, what if the teachers keep her for themselves, to experiment and test and DISECT in private where she'll never see the light of day, or the SEA for that matter, again?!

But the longer she stays away from the ocean, the worse her paranoia gets. She's itching to crawl into her coat, but she can't. She's going weak, the magic that runs the Evermoore as well. She can't sleep, especially not after one of the signs from the fog told her "trust your instincts. Visit home." Nuh uh.

But her fellow rulers are worried for her. She doesn't leave the Evermoore, she can barely pick up her broom. But no one is as worried as Katherine. Why has her... friend. Why has her friend, normally so chipper and hyper and smiley grown so grey?

Katherine will get to the bottom of this.

However Todomatsu actually kinda falls down this similar path of alt right weebism and incelery that I just dont go down and this is bc Todomatsu's f/o (me) is from a pedophilic, and frankly problematic anime. He doesn't quite get it, so the people he ends up interacting with the most tend to be racist, pedophilic incels.

And like he blocks, argues, and pretty much does the most he can to avoid seeing any actual CSA, or whatever, and the series does eventually begin marketing his f/o (me) as an adult, towards an adult audience, but the facial design remains the same, the characterization is still very juvenile, and the biggest difference is the characters more sexualized design (based on my irl body) looking more like a hentai character than not.

Because Todomatsu is completely ignorant of WHY the fandom attracts so many pedos, and why people create CSA art, he ends up becoming very bitter. He fell in love with the character as an adult, and isn't interested in the childhood seasons aside from having white knight fantasies.

Todomatsu initially thought when he would be in the same room as Choromatsu playing it (choro being interested in catching up for the upcoming adult season for predictable reasons) he thinks the show is edgy, heavy handed, and takes itself too seriously as an artform. If you watch it, and see it at face value, it definitely comes across as earnestly trying to depict one sad, yet unsympathetic little girl's life.

So Todomatsu watches the anime always from the framepoint of he's an adult, and he's not sexually interested in children. He does get invested in the idea that Tai-chan's life is going to improve, at least enough not to kill herself. Because the entire premise of the series, and the last episode of each season puts Tai-chan in a situation where suicide is the most logical option.

While watching the first 3 seasons, ova, and theatrical release Todomatsu has a pretty paternal attachment, but because the anime had a 5 year long gap between s4. S4 is marketed as a reboot, and changes genres from being a drama, and psychological horror to being a dark comedy horror. They start producing typical fandom merch like NGE which is inappropriate for the situation at hand, or thr series itself.

Just basically NGE. Statues, cutesy accessories, stuff designed to bait incels bc Tai-chan has a very sexual body, and has been victimized a lot, and the anime panders to this rape culture gaze, where "you can do anything to her and its fine"

Todomatsu himself rebels against this idea because he thinks of himself as Tai-chan's savior, thats the role hes mentally assigned himself, and that's the role his in universe stand in Dotty represents. Since Dotty is just Totty for me, all my hopes ans dreams for love and romance and protection are projected onto him, and thus reinforces the idea that Todomatsu would be the ONLY person to ever treat Tai-chan with love and respect. Because the anime says so.

In order for Todomatsu to engage in the series he has to take it in good faith, that it has to mean MORE than just torture porn of a young girl. When the reality it doesn't.

S4 comes out and Todomatsu's fullblown self shipping, amd shipping thru proxy. S5, and S6 Todomatsu's outright obsessed. He stops trying to impress real girls, or at least those who aren't cosplaying, hes built an alter, and his object of worship is Tai-chan.

But Todomatsu has to be wrong about how he sees Tai-chan. He sees her as this perfect, sympathetic victim, who only seeks out help from the strong (him) and would immediately beg or submit in exchange for protection/power. This isn't true for Tai-chan at all.

And as Todomatsu's obsession grows, his need for genuine connection becomes stronger.

Anyways Todomatsu is an incel, misogynist here. It's partially his fault, bc it was reinforced and normalized in the problematic show hes obsessed with, and the community of perverts that make up the fandom. He ends up losing a huge chunk of his will to live outside of his obsession and it shows in the way he sees himself, and takes care of his appearance. He pretty much assimilates with the typical otaku look.

He gets better eventually but he gets way, way WAY worse beforehand.

In my dietai au, Todomatsu works the night shift, and his coworkers Sacchi and Aida (bc its still a cartoon they have amnesia and this is all happening off season), both have crushes on him because he's just so grungy and fixable.

He's generally nice to them, he keeps away the creeps, he helps them as they learn, hes not the assistant manager yet, but hes been there on the night shift the longest. And he also doesn't hit on them which makes him even more attractive bc he clearly is disinterested.

So the combination of being a lil messy with long hair, a few piercings, stubble, nice, saves them from weirdos, and a good coworker he ends up attracting both of them until they ask if hes single. They thought it was kinda cute that his backpack was clearly from some anime, and that he's constantly wearing stealth merch, bc it made him relatable and down to earth, but like the second theyre like "do you like anyone, do you have a gf?"

Todomatsu's just like "im in love with the main character of this tragedy porn anime where its unclear if shes going to kill herself in the end. You have to see it, but I recommend skipping all the CSA in season one bc its hard to watch."

And they're just like... "...huh?"

And hes just like "yeah after s4 it totally switches, there was a 5 year long break between the seasons and it gets super cute moe after that when Tai-chan becomes an adult. My type is whoever has her measurements and can scream like her."

And they unfortunately lose all respect for him. And he doesnt care bc hes here to get money for buying more merch. Hes lost all hope of losing his virginity to someone real and doesnt care anymore if he has the opportunity to. Hes in love.

About the ugly bastard thing !!! So true!! I've always thought about that!! In every hentai that I've read the guys are barely even cute :(( (worse if they're extremely ugly). Especially about yanderes or just obsessive guys in general. as for the swap au, the way it worked was that louise, the youngest, swapped i guess personality/roles with tina, the oldest. and in that order tina swapped personalities with gene and gene with louise. the accessories were inspired by the original designs but molded to fit the characters more, if that makes sense. like tina would have the bunny ears because they’re a primary accessory to louise’s design while gene has tina’s glasses. i hope louise wasn’t too confusing to figure out, i kinda had to rely on gene’s peppy attitude to accentuate that was who louise swapped with 😭.

if you meant lore-wise, then WHOOPS i wasted that entire rant but i would *assume* it would fall under the same pretenses to louise’s backstory. but maybe instead of first day of preschool it would be more like a gift before middle-school 🤔. like before middle school tina was anxious to start leveling up to a grade or something because of maybe the level of difficulty or the raging prepubescent hormones that will flutter around and her having louise’s personality, she wouldn’t handle it well. so when she got the bunny ears, she was like getting to a point where she felt too old for cutesy stuff and was already delving into her dark, brooding aesthetic. but the white ears had a sort of ironic contrast with the rest of her clothes that she somewhat admired. so she wore it to school for the first time and for a bit no one batted an eye so she felt pretty safe, until someone made an comment on it that bothered her and she made a (quite loud) stand for herself and immediately intimidated a whole crowd of kids on her first day of middle school. after that nobody messed with “snow ears” and tina proudly wore her hat everyday ☺️.

Hope this doesn't dredge up any uncomfortable memories you wanted buried. What were the goriest or scariest moments or scenes you've encountered in your years of riffing webcomics?

I don't find gory stuff to be that scary, just kind of gross, but in the world of webcomics gory scenes are often VERY tryhard, especially in the world of Dominic Deegan. That doesn't mean usage of gore doesn't sometimes work, it has to kinda come out of nowhere to be scary.

As for scary scenes, here are five examples off the top of my head. Of course I am discounting most of the unintentionally scary stuff because then this list would be filled with creepy closeups, disturbing chibi faces and World of Friends.

1. The Train Guy's Death from Kit n Kay Boodle

I've listed off this scene so many times now, but it's still probably the most infamous scene from Kit n Kay Boodle outside of the real life arcs. The Train Guy tricks Karastropov to possess him in order to contact Kit and Kay from their secret base, however Karastropov is furious when he learns Train Guy knew them all along, and slowly makes him bleed to death. Such a gory death happening in a mostly-cutesy porn comic is seriously unexpected, which makes it a very memorable scene. I would argue this is one of the few heroes Albert gave an unhappy death, and speaking of Albert, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to quality horror from him.

2. The Infernomancer Jump Scare from Dominic Deegan

Dominic Deegan, like I said, tries so goddamn hard to be scary. Deaths of entire crowds, massive eldritch abominations who speak in EVIL gibberish, demon gods with spikes, horns and EVIL TEETH ABLBLBLBLLALSLLBA, once you've seen one of them you've seen them all. The only time Dominic Deegan was kind of scary was during the "Sin City" arc, where Dominic is stuck in his seer coma thing, and suddenly sees Infernomancer's face. While this scene would be a lot more impactful if we didn't see frequent scenes of him killing people while tracking down Deegan's mother Miranda, it's still a kinda spooky scene. Imagine if a creepy face appeared when your eyes were closed.

3. Trasik's Mysterious Child Trafficking Operation from Alien Dice

When it comes to horror, I prefer when the horror is in form of a question mark. Alien Dice pulled this off really well with Trasik's slave ship, which has an entire section full of children. This scene just spawns many questions, until this point we thought Trasik was just a generic determinator obsessed with hunting down and killing Lexx but this whole, concept implied she is more twisted than that. It's one of the few times I was genuinely concerned over a fictional villain's motivations. Later of course some of the mystery was removed when we learned that Trasik just trains these kids to be soldiers and...wait, what happened to these kids? What the hell Tiffany? When are you going to answer that question?

4. Austin's fucked up trilogy from Carnivores

As ridiculous as Carnivores is, sometimes Austin's mind can go off the deep end. First one of these was the Bear Arc, which at first seemed to be a generic "large animals torture a bunch of bipedals" arc, but then it takes a hard left turn when a black lion shows up out of nowhere and eats someone's soul, and somehow it manages to be just as painful as the usual eating scenes in the comic. Then we have "Lion Named Lab" which should really be called "Blue Fox kills everyone", as he kills not only Austin and Lab, but also his minion gnolls. Thankfully the whole thing turns out to be a weird Night Tremor. Same can't be said for Death Note parody arc, which starts off as an unfunny parody but then turns into another "Everybody Dies" arc where the previously comedic Ryuk murders the entire cast, many of these characters originally debuting in earlier arcs. There was no real purpose to it, it just happened. These stories were so goddamn morbid, even with the terrible artstyle and bad writing. I almost have to compliment Austin for that, but I think he needs counceling.

5. Too Many Things from Gene Catlow

If there is one thing Albert is good at writing, it's horror, and I don't just mean unintentional horror. It's so fucking bizarre because this comic tries to appeal to kids and kid-adjacent people every other second, and then you get scary ass imagery out of nowhere that end as soon as they began. We've got skeletons dragging a bunch of puppets into the sand, creepy CGI cats that stalk their victims, Cotton turning into a corpse after acting the Sight of the Soul, Horton being mindraped by his own puppet's ghosts, Michelle's first appearance, Karlsson and Matt's temporary corpses, Borzoi somehow being bloodier than fucking Train Guy after Matt tormented him and most recently, a psychological horror show between Carson and Forzoi. Albert could've probably written a better horror comic than Dave Hopkins.
